Would it be cheaper to insure a VW Golf for an 18 year old as a name driver on my parents insurance ?

Question 1
Would it be cheaper to insure a VW Golf for an 18 year old as a name driver on my parents insurance ?...  I hear that a VW Golf is really expensive to insure for an 18 year old. Would it be cheaper if the car was insured for my parents and I was a name driver on that insurance ?

Answers
1)   well if your 18, regardless, your insurance is going to be higher then someone who has been driving for longer, so insuring it under their names and making the payments yourself might be best - stooe

2)   it will definitely be cheaper being a named driver under your parents insurance, but try to go for a company that lets named drivers build up their own no claims bonuses, because otherwise it's going to be just as harsh when you do start your own insurance up - Tony Montana

3)   any car's expensive for an 18 year old to insure, if your parents allow it goes down by loads, so do it! :D - EezeyBreezey

4)   probably but it may increase their insurance. Call up a company your not interested in getting a rate with and ask them. Or get your mom to. Then you call the company and ask how much it would cost with you alone and compare being on your moms to you being on your own insurance. Personally i think its cheaper to be on your mom's insurance. - Gella07

5)   Most companies use the highest risk driver to set the price now to combat the fraudulent activity that you are thinking of engaging in. Click the link to the BBC news website below for an explanation of insurance fronting.
Always remember that insurers will know about all the scams you can come up with and many more too. - Timbo is here

6)   What you're suggesting is illegal and the insurance companies are onto this scam. You have to have your own insurance in your own name and accept that for the cheapest car imaginable you'll be paying £2k+.
No other option unfortunately. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

7)   It is better to name an adult as a driver on your own Insurance policy.Doing it the other way around does not really serve a purpose as one day you have to "walk on your own two feet" You would be better off getting a really low rated car as a first car to enable you to build up some no claims bonus. Sadly, things will not change for you until you attain your 25 th birthday. - L G

5)   It's a decent car overall... with better rear seat leg space than Polo!!! I would say it is a Jack of all trades and master of none... It's not as good as Honda City in petrol and does not come near to Hyundai Verna in Diesel.... So it's car for all those who do not expect too much in this segment.

Question 3
Are most VW beetles Standard or Automatic?...  What aree they? Is stick hard to drive???

Answers
1)   Most of the older ones are standard but on newer ones both are common.

Stick is not hard at all on these little cars. My wife got one a couple of years ago and had never driven a stick before, within a week she was completely comfortable with it - UT-TEX

2)   My '55 VW is a stick. Most air-cooled ones are. The "automatic" is an auto-shift. They're pretty cool, but very different. I've driven them, but never owned one, though I'd like to.

Mine isn't difficult at all. The clutch plate has springs, and it's very forgiving. I can just about pop the clutch in first without any chatter every time.

The speedo has little red bars that tell you when to shift to 2nd, 3rd & 4th. It's really a no-brainer.

I've owned it since I was a hippy in 1974, but my wife wants me to sell it. I'm going to miss Adolf, he's been a good friend. - Pilgrim

3)   In USA, mostly automatic. But there are manual VW Beetles to be found. As for the difference in driving experience, I have only ever owned manual cars and refuse to own an automatic. They are positively boring to drive compared to manuals. It really is so much easier to learn to drive a manual than most people say. I had it down in less than a week of normal driving. And may I say that you will be repaid many times over in driving pleasure for this one week of learning. Good luck in your search, and please think outside of the (automatic gear)box (: - Adrien

4)   The older Beetle's from the 50s, 60s are manuel transmission.

But in '98 when they came back--- they are both auto and manuel... in fact, for the 2011 or 2012 VW is planning to redesign the car! - Impressive_Instant

Question 4
How to improve a Golf mk4 for the snow ?...  I'm a surfer/snowboarder/photographer. So when I eventually buy my golf I will defo be going up to the Pyrennese or the Alpes to snowboard. Are there any things I could do to improve my golf in the snow or any driving tips ? Don't worry snowchaines are always packed.
As it'll be my first car I can't afford a 4x4, if I could that would be my first choice.

Answers
1)   the make of car is irrelevant . the driver skill and anticipation is much more important. looking ahead and doing things early such as braking becomes essential. thinking about conditions such as black ice or ice under snow! needs to be addressed. snow chains are excellent when used correctly . pulling away for example needs slow speed and high torque. even using second gear and not 1st can achieve smoother pull away with less risk of wheel spins.
checking weather and road conditions before starting a journey can be a help.
anticipation of other drivers mistakes is also a way of combating possible potential disaster. eg car coming other way on a bend possibly a little to fast can lose traction and slide into your path and or collide.
you can of course buy special tyres with metal spikes as used by rally cars but often these are hard to come by, are expensive and many road authorities take a dim view of them being used as they can adversely affect the road surface. - hornchurchmale

2)   answer no is good ..driving skill is paramount ...however i do have a home in pyrennese ..you will not be driving up to those places in winter ..they close a lot of the passes ..and there is no way i would even consider driving only a front wheel drive car on roads like that ...you will need a 4x4 .. - boy boy

3)   Proper snow tires, Bridgestone Blizzaks came out with new tire technology this year, in addition to the multicell compound, the tire contains iron particles to emulate stud traction on ice. Many northern and central European countries make snow tires mandatory. - pbleek

4)   Get a set of 4 Blizzak snow tires. - Two Lane Blacktop
