Vento VR6 engine swap?

Question 1
Vento VR6 engine swap?...  Hi,

I currently own a 1.8 4 cylinder VW Vento (MK3 Jetta) with a standard engine. I want to swap the engine out for a 2.8 VR6 engine. so my question is, how well does the VR6 engine match up to the standard gearbox and engine mounts? (It is a project car, I will swap the standard gearbox for a stronger one when i get the money to stop damage!) anyone had any experience / issues when swapping a vr6? would i have to make any modifications? thanks for any help!
Hi, Thanks for the responses, I was going to put a stronger uprated VR6 gearbox on it anyway, but I can only really afford one thing at the time...

I just wanted to know if it would sit with the standard gearbox till i change the box. as its a project car i wont drive it till i get everything modified (brakes, suspension e.t.c.) do you know if the drive shafts will fit as well in teh chassis? thanks

Answers
1)   Forget using the standard gearbox for a start.
The only sensible way to do this is to buy a written off VR6 so you have access to the ecu, loom, mounts, gearbox, brakes, etc. - you'll need a stack of parts to make the engine fit & buying them individually will be very expensive. Probably cheaper & easier all round to buy a complete car in the first place and sell yours. - J G

2)   You clearly like a challenge ? I am pretty sure that a VR6 will not marry up to your original gearbox. The clutch inside will not be strong enough. You need stronger springs and shocks as well as an uprated anti roll bar and larger brakes. Fitting larger brakes is not that simple as your factory fit wheels may be too small to accommodate the brakes. However, many people have done this kind of mod. I did many many upgrades to a Mark 2 GTi I had years ago, it became a kind of obsession, when I came to sell it I counted up the money spent which was £2,700 + on a car I had paid £5,250 for ! In the cold light of day it did not make any sense as I got back £1500 and a banger which I sold for £550. I think the moral of the story is save yourself a lot of work and get the car you want instead ! - L G

3)   You'll need the whole drivetrain from the VR6 including the gearbox and driveshafts. The bigger brakes would be a good idea too. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

Question 2
is the volkswagen type1 beetle run on diesel engine?...

Answers
1)   If you mean does the first beetles run on diesel fuel its a NO. They were a petrol engine. Later Volkswagen cars had diesel engine as an option. - DrkLce

2)   or if you mean its dieseling where its running on and takes a while before it turns off? your timing is out. - gooseboy78

3)   no all aircooled vw's were petrol engines. they did experiment with a diesel engine in the early or mid 50's but it was too loud and under powered so they didnt continue with it.

if its running on when you turn the key off check your fuel shut-off solenoid on the side of the carb. have a friend turn the key to the run position while you stand back at the carb. you should be able to hear a small 'click' noise. have your friend turn the key on and off 5 times. you should hear the click 5 out of 5 times. if it doesnt click check for power to it which comes directly from the ignition coil and is also jumped to the electromagnetic choke heat element - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

Question 3
How long would a 2011 jetta TDI last?...  - i live in nb, canada so theres alot of salt on the roads here (the jetta apparently has an unlimited km, 12 year corrosion warranty)
- i make 2 hour trips every weekend in the summer

+ i had a Plymouth Grand Voyager that lasted 12 years and 350000 KM before the transmission died
+ i have a dodge caravan that has lasted 5 years and 220000 KM and have had 1 issue, with the alternator
+ i am super easy on cars

Answers
1)   if it doesn't ever have problems with the high pressure fuel system, and you do scheduled maintenance on it, the motor should outlast the car. - StandardChoir

2)   Barring mishaps and "botched" repair jobs you would still have the car in 20 years time. However, I do not claim to know where your VW cars are sourced from, IF it is a German import the above applies, if it comes from Brazil or Mexico then there are quaility issues. - L G

Question 4
Would the volkswagen tiguan be good for a 17 year old?...  I'm looking at cars to buy in the future like several months from now or next year. I really like tiguan. Is it a good, safe car? Do you think it's a good looking car? Thanks. I'm just having fun looking right now, I will most likely buy a used car but I'm wondering about this.

Answers
1)   i think its a great car for a 17 year old, the car looks nice, even the used ones look great, and id say its pretty safe too - someone who needs help

2)   - i would honestly say...it isnt a teen friendly car there price starts at $28000
- all volkswagens have amazing handling
- a volkswagen could last you up to 12 years!
- Volkswagen Jetta TDI has amazing fuel economy, it takes ultra low sulfur diesel and is an incredibly comfortable car at a fair price

- you will not find the used volkswagen you want, they keep their value! ive seen year old 50000+ volkswagens sell for 200 dollars less than new and generally people keep a volkswagen when they buy one

...ugh too many "volkswagens" in that paragraph! - Grant Logan
