Is this a reasonable price for a VW Scirocco?

Question 1
Is this a reasonable price for a VW Scirocco?...  Looking for my first car, Dad and I have just been to inspect a 1985 VW Scirocco Mk II which an old man we know is selling. The seller told us he was selling it for 'fifteen,' making us think $1500 NZ dollars. The condition of the car was fairly poor, except it had a reasonably good engine. However has thrashed it every day of its life, and it hasn't been garaged for its 25 years of existence. He's pulled the radio out, the heaters/a.c doesn't work and the car is finished in faded matte paint. We later found out, after making an offer of $1300 NZ dollars, that he actually meant $15,000 NZD leaving my father and I annoyed and amused. What is a realistic amount of money that this car is worth? I've converted the currencies to make it easier for those of you overseas to make sense of it all.
Is it worth:
$1500 NZ
690 British pounds
$1100 US
$1140 Australia

or is it worth his estimate:
$15,000 NZ
6955 British pounds
11,005 US
$11,390 Australia

Answers
1)   If it's $15,000 NZ, he must think that because it's rare it must be worth a pretty penny.

Given the condition which you state, it is likely closer to the $1500 figure you stated. Rarity is rarity, but perhaps he just doesn't want to sell it. - sattore

2)   They sell for around 1900-4900 USD. 11,000 is crazy. - Landon

3)   Check on the UK e bay site as these motors come up now and again. I sold one that I had restored and it was immaculate, I got £1150 for it just over 4 years ago. It was registered in 1993 and was one of the very last ones in UK. If I could have converted it to power steering I would have kept it. - L G

4)   I think this depends on rarity in a given country or region you are in.
In the US, in my city I've seen rough to average condition models selling for $800 USD and up. No more than any other mass produced car of that age.
When I see prices that look high, I always see what else I can get for the same money and that usually clears it up pretty quickly that their price is rediculous. For $11,000 USD I could get an excellent condition C4 Corvette that's ready to drive right now. Yeah, I'll take the Vette. - Jay S

5)   I'd offer a maximum of $2000 NZ, rare or not. - Chris

6)   Myself, I would think it is worth charging $ 400 (USD) to remove it from the seller`s driveway. Is this guy hitting the crack pipe or something. These cars are bococky. - neanderstrat

Question 2
how often to rebuild a 1600 cc vw engine?...  I want to either buy or build my first Baja bug and have never owned a vw ever. I'm just wanting to know how many miles on average does a 1600cc engine need to be rebuilt? Are they relatively dependable?

Answers
1)   to often - Eugene

2)   They are dependable. I had a 68 Beetle in high school with a transplanted 1600cc engine. It was already used with 50K miles on it. It lasted me another 2 yrs no problem. That was back in 84-86. I cannot say how often they should be rebuilt. You rebuild them when a problem is bad enough to call for a rebuild. - The Eagle Keeper

3)   these are easy to work on i would say every 50 thou and she will run like a top for another 500000 - musicmanchuck4

4)   I have owned many over the years. All went over 100,000 with no rebuild. I had 2 that were over 200,000. As to how long it will run after a rebuild that all depends on the term rebuild and how well it is done. A line bored case is usually the weak link there. A total rebuild should include a new case. - Gerry

5)   most of the time its around 90,000 miles for the first rebuild unless the motor was well taken care of. there are old air cooled VW motors out there with over 250,000 miles without a rebuild. it all depends on many factors. if you plan on running the hell out of it and not paying attention to the oil level, timing , valve adjustment and stuff like that plan on a rebuild every 45,000 - 50,000 miles.

im driving a 1970 every day with around 80,000 miles on it that has never been rebuilt, hell i dont even think the carb has been rebuild on it ever and it still starts and runs like a top - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

6)   It depends. Performance, about 50,000 mi. Everyday, depends. Keep the valves adjusted and use Mobil 1. - neanderstrat

Question 3
Is a red Volkswagen Rabbit an ugly car?...  I am interested in getting a red 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit but my family says that it doesn't look good in red. What do you guys think?

Answers
1)   I think it would be awesome. It should be your decision you will be the one driving it not them. If you want to change the color later you can. I'd like to get a 1980 and restore it eventually! ;) - IM_MOLMOL

2)   At first I thought to say 'it wouldn't matter' just pick whatever you want, but I googled some pictures and no it really doesn't look good in red. Find one that's white or silver or something different.

But if the price is right, just get the red one. - Mike

3)   well if you are buying it as a gift for the family then by all means let them decide. If its for you, then you like the color and if they dont like it, then take the shoe leather express! BTW, VW reds are awesome when waxed up right. - S.

4)   It looks great in red... if you look after the paint properly. Do you like it in red? If so, buy it. - Chris

Question 4
My daughter lost her keys to her VW Passat. It's one of those chip keys. What should I do?...  I heard I can go to the Huntington VW dealership, but I didn't buy the car there and I'm reluctant to go. I also heard I can do it myself, but it seems like that might take a while. Locksmith? What is the best option? Has any other Passat owner lost their car keys before?

Answers
1)   Google it - Notre Dame

2)   Go to any VW dealer with you registration. They can make you a key on the spot. - Skyhawk

3)   If the Passat is the new model where the entire key fob pushes into the dash (there is no traditional key that you turn) then you'll need to go to any VW dealer and order a new one. You'll need the VIN off the car.

Be prepared, it won't be cheap. - mccoyblues

4)   Pamela, the easiest would be to go to your nearest dealership (Huntington VW in your case) and give them the VIN number. Depending on the year model of the Passat, the key can be anything from US$60 to US$200. They will also need to program the transponder inside the remote once you have the new key. - Chris
