Question 2
Is a 1999 VW Passat a good buy?...  I had a look at this VW Passat. Its pretty clean and drives great. It has about 109,000 miles on it. I am looking for something that would last me for like 4 years at least without any hassle. I do go for very long drives (FL to NY). Can anyone tell me what they think about this and their experience with a VW Passat if any http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/ctd/2011865415.html.

Answers
1)   Looks like a great deal!

Buy it! Go VW! - Adolph Hitler

2)   Yes go bay that _ 109.00 its nothig for Vw, and its vhill last like 10years more. Vw after 1998 give 18 years warranty on body for corrosion.
Congratulation - Goran

3)   The most important thing is service history. In particular you want to check that the engine oil has been regularly changed. If it has then 109,000 is pretty low for a VW and it should last you at least 4 years.

Good luck! - Alex

4)   You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com - Clay

5)   I researched on www.whatcar.com , its a British motoring website.
According to it, the VW Passat's most common problems are faults with the suspension and the axles. Gearbox failures are common faults and costly to fix.
I would purchase a newer car, probably the present VW Passat to be on the safe side.

However if you still intent to purchase it, make sure you do not hear any strange noises in the suspension or gearbox during the test drive!
Good luck :) - XF-AMG

6)   Dont buy it. You will have electrical problems, the car is to old. - Luis

Question 3
coolant keeps running dry in 06 VW Passat?...  I just bought this car June 30th and it drove like a dream. The warranty was up Sept 30th. On Sept 29th I took it into the shop because my coolant low light came on. I checked the coolant and it was almost bone dry. (It immediatly was dropped off at the dealer) There is no sign of coolant anywhere and the dealer did an oil change and nothing was in the oil. So they refilled the coolant with no explanation as to why it was empty. (Took it to VW for issue, bought at a different dealership), Where is the coolant going...it is empty again and it has been less than a month since it was filled and only about 750 miles driven.
Also, is this going to be a pricey fix?

Answers
1)   The favourite place for coolant loss is the radiator. I have just replaced mine on a 2005 model Golf. If you look inside the engine bay from the front of the car take a look at the visible section of radiator in front of where your left leg will be. I have had two VW cars with leaks in that area.If it is the radiator then a replacement is about £70(spurious make) and then you have the cost of coolant and any labour if you are unable to do the work yourself. - L G

2)   Cheek the water pump its inside the timing belt cover, and if the water pump its leak antifreeze going down to the cower and sometimes water pump its leaking only when the engine its ruining, so cheek also with engine ON.
And do you have antifreeze or water in the coolant? Vw engines for this age are designed for antifreeze because water have lower point to turn in gas condition then antifreeze. - Goran

3)   Get the coolant system pressure tested. It can leak at many places. head gasket.rad.egr cooler.pipes.etc etc.... - MANU CRAP

4)   Maybe its the waterpump leaking, which is covered my powertrain warranty, check under the car by the harmonic balancer for pink fluid. if not check if there is coolant by the transmission side, this would mean the coolant flange is leaking. It could also be the thermostat housing - Luis

Question 5
Car is jolting wondering what could be wrong?...  I have a 95 ford contour that seems to die sometimes when idling. The main problem though is when I am going under 30 mph it seems to jolt heavily every 2-4 seconds and it feels like the transmission is getting slammed. It is still drivable and ok on the highway. Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Answers
1)   Sounds like fuel starvation, try a new fuel filter. Possibly pulling in air which then weakens the air/fuel mix. Check for leaks in the induction system. The other possibility is a "leak" on the HT ignition system. This one is the easiest to detect, open the hood at night and see if you can see the tell tale trace of blue sparks going from a wire or component to "earth" (metal) This again is usually easy to fix by either cleaning away the dirt or grease or using insulation tape. - L G

2)   It could be a blocked fuel line or old/dirty fuel, but more likely it is part of the engine electrical distribution.
First thing I would do is check (and possibly replace) the spark plugs. If that doesn't do it try replacing HT leads and distributor cap.
Good luck - Alex

3)   I have a 98 Tracer and she did just this and it was an air hose that had roted in the SC heat. Same for a friends Ford Ranger 2000.So I would say check for air leeks. (I like to go cheep first on hunting for problems) - Gabrielle Cilluffo
