will a 2000 Volkswagen jetta brake down on me?

Question 1
will a 2000 Volkswagen jetta brake down on me?...  will a 2000 volkswagen jetta brake down before a 2000 volkswagon passat and what problems are there with the cars and which car should i get as a first car thnx

Answers
1)   Brake is what you do when you push the pedal to stop so I'm sure it would. - mustanger

2)   Either one could break, they are 10 years old and probably have traveled 100,000 miles. You check them out, pay your money and take your chances. All cars will break down. hopefully not right away, and not too frequently. (Both are fairly expensive to fix) - jimanddottaylor

3)   Yes, they are both bad. If you want something that won't break down buy a Toyota, or maybe a Honda or Nissan. All Volkswagens made since '93 are notorious for electrical issues. The Passats are especially bad, but the Golf/Jetta line isn't a pinnacle of reliability either.
And as far as first cars go, buy something you can afford to wreck, dent, scratch up and not feel too terrible about. If you want a VW, get a Rabbit, or 2nd generation Golf (pre 92), or a Scirocco. Avoid Corrados. I know, they're cool, but they are trouble. - Logan

4)   It really depends on the condition the car is in. Make sure the oil is changed, has a clean air filter, brakes, radiator fluid is changed, and all that good stuff is taken care of as soon as you buy the car. There are allot of bad reviews about Volkswagen's and to be honest, most are true. However, the surviving VWs you see from the 90s and 2000s are probably very reliable. ANY car you buy new or used can break down on you. Human error in construction of vehicles is always a factor. Will it break down on you? If its lasted this long then its probably a decent buy for a used car, and if you take care of it, there is no reason it should break down on you. - Greg

5)   You have a problem with VW in the states as they were made(I believe) in the land of the Tortilla. Ours are made in Germany and are brilliant. Back to yours, the main thing to check is that they have had a new cam belt fitted. They should be done about 70k miles and every 70 k thereafter. If it has not been done and you buy get it done asap. - L G

6)   they are almost the same car same motors and so they are the same - Volkswagen

Question 2
my vw polo 1994 won't start when cold?...  When the engine is cold my car really doesn't want to start. It does after about 10 minutes of trying. I have had a new plug's put on. But the garage couldn't find any thing wrong with it. They said they need the car cold to see what happens... But i have to start it to get it to them, so i'm confussed...

Answers
1)   Maybe they are willing for you to park the car with them in the evening, so they can have a look at it first thing in the morning. - Belgian maiden

2)   Leave it with the garage overnight and let them try to start it. - fleefly

3)   Have you checked the battery? It could be that its not producing enough cold cranking amps and that's why it takes as long as it does to start. Best thing to do if you can is to leave your car over night at the repair shop and have the mechanic start the car in the morning. That's the best way to tell what's going wrong with it. Hope this helps! Best of luck! ;) - IM_MOLMOL

4)   I had a similar problem in the past. First time was a (don't laugh) Skoda and then a Honda Civic. I went through every mortal thing and on both occasions it turned out that the spark plug leads needed replacing. They were a composite type material not copper wire, and were simply worn out. If your in UK ( I assume) you can get new ones from Halfords stores for less than £40 and they will probably fit them for free of charge. - L G

5)   Maybe the battery is less efficient in cold weather - L CALABAN

6)   This happened to me years ago and they went crazy trying to figure it out. Open the carburetor and take the air filter out, then have someone cover the top of the carburetor with their hand while to try the ignition again. And it works. I actually had to do this every morning for 3 months until they finally figured it out it was the small fuel valve feeding the carburetor.

'04 VW Jetta Question?...  I just got quoted from the local VW dealership to replace my Timing belt, Water Pump, Tensioner, Rollers, ECT Sensor, Thermostat, and Coolant for $1150. This includes Labor time.

Now my make is the 2004 VW Jetta 2.0L and im at 80k miles.

Just wondering if this is a bit overpriced and if i should go to an independant shop?

Thanks

Answers
1)   Pretty sure thats average - Volkswagen

2)   The price isn't too high. However I don't see why you need to change the ECT sensor and thermostat at 80k. You should change the timing belt and coolant isn't a bad idea if you haven't done it in awhile. Changing the water pump at the same time as the timing belt has become a norm. But it depends if you've had any water pump issues or not. - alexpassini

3)   any time you choose to use a dealership, expect to pay more. they charge almost double for parts.. go to your local parts store-Napa,Checkers,Pepboys, places like that. buy the parts you need then call a few shops, ask for quotes. it'll save you a few hundred $$$. if you feel more comfortable having the vw dealership do the work then take the parts to them. - ajz54

4)   For a dealership, that's about right.

Find an independent VW specialist and they should be able to get you down around half that, maybe $750 anyway. - Richard R

Question 2
whats a better car a 2000 vw jetta or a 2000 vw passat?...

Answers
1)   All things being equal, mileage, maintenance, and accident history, a 2000 Passat will be a slightly better vehicle, if you're buying a used one. Judging by how many are still on the road, Jetta. - Spanish Inquisition

2)   they have the same motor options, the passat is bigger so safer, jetta has better handling. they are for the most part the same thing - Volkswagen

3)   To me, its not a contest: the Jetta by a country mile. Although the Jetta has had its share of concerns, they pale in comparison to that of the Passat. The Jetta is base form with the 2.0 liter NON turbo 4 cylinder is by far more reliable than a Passat. The Passat is larger, requires premium fuel, gets less economy, uses 504.00 spec oil (synthenic oil only) and has far more issues than the Jetta.

The largest issue is that the Passat steering and suspension are weak and expensive to repair; known problems are the upper links which will need replacement usually between 70 to 100K miles, tie rod ends that wear and even some ball joint wear issues. Tire wear has also been a concern due to the suspension and steering issues. Also the repair costs for timing belt replacements, clutch costs and the heater core issues are very expensive. Although not as large an issue, front brake pad and rotor wear have also been reported as concerns.

It is true that the Golf and Jetta from this generation aren't the most reliable of vehicles; yet, from my experience in the dealership service department, the Passat has more expensive issues than the Jetta/Golf. Most of the issues dealing with the Golf/Jetta have been corrected by service bullentins and/or recalls. Items like the window regulators, transmission shift issues and the like have handled by this time; the Passat issues are either milage or age related, though like the Jetta and Golf, the automatic transmission is a weak point.

The basic Jetta/Golf with the base engine, manual window regulators, standard engine and transmission has been far more reliable than any other VW models during this time period, save the Cabrio. It runs on regular gas, gets the best milage, no sunroof leaks (base models don't have a factory sunroof option) uses regular engine oil and costs the least to drive and insure. Avoid if possible, just on principal alone, the automatic transmission; its known weak point in any VW from this time period. VW automatics from 2005 up (depending upon model) have been far more reliable and can be considered to be a good choice now....

If you don't need the interior room or space for 5 people, then the Jettta makes great sense, especially in town driving. The smaller size lends its self well to parking in smaller spaces, while the handling is far better than the Passat.

Hope this helps, a car nut. - a car nut

4)   I wouldn't touch a passat with a 10 foot pole. Maybe you should get more options for your car. Just saying...10 year old VW can be death to your wallet. - Hank Scorpio

5)   You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here - carquotes.sinfree.net - Antony

Question 2
Will MG ZR wheels fit on to mk3 golf with 4 stud wheels ?...  I just would like to know if anyone has ever tried to put MG wheel on to a mk3 vw golf and if they fit properly?

Answers
1)   Yes: The PCD is the same (4x100), offset is similar & centre bore is 1mm different. - J G

2)   Why on earth would you want to inflict that on a Golf ! - L G

3)   I would say YES.

According to international fitment guide, both MG ZR and MK3 has the same PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter). This value must be exactly same if you are fitting another vehicle's wheels to your car.
In your case,they match.No problem.

ET(Offset) values and Centre bores sizes are slightly different but since these values are in close range,i do not think it will cause any problem.

Hope this helps,

Hope this helps, - alloy-wheels-store.com

4)   No they won't fit the centre bore is different.
The Golf centre hub is 57.1 mm but the MG wheels will only be bored to 56.1, even though the PCD is the same. - CDC

Is the leg room in an old Volkswagen Bus good?...  I'm 6'1" tall and have very long legs. I also have a love for those cute classic VW buses and am considering buying one. I haven't driven one yet, I'm just checking them out on the internet so far. From the pics I've been looking at, he leg room looks pretty tight.
If this is the case, can the driver's seat be moved back at all?

Thank you!

Answers
1)   I'm 6'1 and had a 79 Bus. Loved it, didn't have a lot of leg room, but I wasn't cramped either. Get one with bucket seats instead of the bench seat for more adjustment. - Shane A

2)   The whole experience is different. Since you're seated VERY upright, your knees just don't seem to have the same challenges that they do in other cars. That said, note that on the oldest models you almost straddle the steering column (wheel isn't quite horizontal, but close) and on the newer ones - 1968 and later - the steering column isn't quite as prominent, but does still deliver the same general seating experience as the older models. - Steve in Seattle

3)   You will fit. VW's have a lot more leg room than one would think. Look for a "walk through" bus with bucket seats. If there is not enough room, you can remount the seat back just a bit.

Antifreeze for a 2001 VW Beetle?...  I started my car and my coolant light started flashing red. So I checked it and it was extremely low. I had no coolant to add so I added some water and went to the store. My vw mechanic at the dealership said not to mix coolant cuz it could gel up and blow. Is this true? Our can I buy a product like prestone for all makes and modelslike the bottle says? Or do they sell a coolant at the part store I could buy? Please help!!

Answers
1)   It won't blow up, but there are differences in the corrision protection and with some brands, it won't mix together, which in theory could possibly cause it to "gel". You should also carry the power steering fluid as it does not mix with other fluids, adding "regular" power steering fluid or even worse ATF will also cause problems as well.

Getting back to the question at hand, yes, only use either G12 coolant or the G12+ coolant, only available at VW or Audi dealerships. If you're low on fluid and the amount that it is low is very small, its best that you add only distilled water to the cooling system. You can add the G12 as soon as possible. - a car nut

2)   You can put in the Prestone 'all'. VW want phosphate free coolant. Believe Prestone All is that. Read the label on the jug to double check if it's compatible. - Kenny

How to Unlock the fuel cap on a VW 2001 polo?...  please help we've tried everything and cant seem to get it to unlock and when we do we dont know how we've done it :S

Answers
1)   put the key in and press down and turn it - idac123

2)   It should unlock with the central locking. If it doesn't, either the little locking plunger is stuck or there's a leak in the pipe from the central locking pump to the plunger. In the short term, you should be able to pry it open without damaging the lock. - J G

3)   As JG says, the Polo has a weird vacuum operated locking system. Once you've persuaded it to open, the common "cure" is to disconnect the vacuum lock and get yourself an ordinary locking cap. You may, though, be able to get at the pipe and track it, looking for leaks or a disconnection. - champer

4)   You haven't tried everything as the cap is still locked. Look in the handbook, haven't got one? buy one from a dealer. - Fred Smith

5)   If the fuel flap is shut with the central locking there is a manual overide behind the boot trim. You car handbook shows you this. If it is the key lock on the fuel cap, turn the key until you pull the key out and then unscrew, you may have to turn it a full turn until the ratchet mechanism on the cap engages and allows you to fully unscrew and remove the cap. - L G

Question 2
manual cars are cheapper than automatic?...

Answers
1)   Usually a manual is less expensive than an automatic, this is because a manual is generally cheaper to build and are less prone to failure, there for less expensive to warranty the vehicle. - Matthew H

2)   Yes this unfortunately is true not only on the car lot but also in the long term. Plus the manual transmission can be fixed a heck of a lot easier and cheaper than the automatic and it gives longer life to the vehicle because a whole lot of vehicles are simply given up on when the auto-transmission becomes too expensive to repair or replace. In most automatic cars the transmission to fix is often times more than the value of the car. - amber

3)   they're also the cheaper option because most people are lazy as hell and don't want to learn how to drive a manual, so the automatic option is more expensive because they're going to sell more. - Greg

4)   Volkswagen automatics are cheaper in the long run. manuals need clutches, and when you floor it in reverse with the manual you have to hold the shifter in gear cause it may kick out causing damage to the transmission - Volkswagen

5)   I think it depends on the type of car. If it's a sports or performance car, then a manual will probably be worth more, because enthusiasts appreciate that, therefore, they are willing to pay more.

Having said that, if it's a "normal" car, a manual will probably be cheaper because most people in the U.S prefer an automatic. - Eddy

Question 3
VW Transporter 1.9TD thick smoke, brown when started, then white/blue.?...  The clutch gives a small knock when started and the revs go up and down a small bit in idle and while driving. It revs fully for a few seconds in idle and then goes back down. When reving it produces a lot of thick darkish smoke. The engine makes a whirring noise like its electric above 2500 revs. I ran the tank dry over a week ago, but it started again fine and gave no trouble for a few days. since then i have put nearly 4 litres of oil in it aswell. Any ideas or help would be well appreciated!

Answers
1)   Sounds like the turbo charger is broken - Timbo is here

2)   If it's used a gallon of oil in a week, you obviously have some serious engine wear. This shouldn't have been caused by running out of diesel though. - J G

3)   head gasket i think, oil is getting into cylinders.

if you get the car started get someone to rev it and put your hand over exhaust, if there is oil specks on your hand gasket, as for reving? could be a blocked oil flow around the engine? - Darren B

4)   Sounds like the seals have gone in the turbo and the oil is being drawn into the engine as well as going out into the exhaust system. You need to be very careful with starting your van. Once a certain amount of oil gets into the intercooler radiator it will force feed the engine and YOU will not be able to turn it off as the revs increase to flat out. In the worst case scenario it will throw a piston con rod through the engine block. I have seen this occur with an Iveco and it is frightening to say the least. - L G

5)   head gasket check the oil Colour - Ryan Arnold

How long will a 1985 Volkswagen diesel 1.6L Golf Mk2 last?

Question 1
How long will a 1985 Volkswagen diesel 1.6L Golf Mk2 last?...  I'm looking to buy a 1985 VW diesel Golf for $2,000 with about 250k miles on it. I know very little about VW diesels and I'm wondering how reliable this car will be and how many miles I can expect to get out of it. Are diesels normally pretty robust?
The owner claims to had changed these parts:

-new timing belt/re-timed
-rebuilt fuel pump
-new thermostat
-oil pan gasket
-Koni cup lowering shock kit
-Borbet 6 star alloy rims (need new rubber)
-Euro quad headlights
-new fuel injectors
-new glow plugs
-new heating core

Answers
1)   It's hard to say how long the car will last. A car that is that old and that many miles is a gamble. Yes diesel engines are usually more robust than their gasoline cousins. However, the rest of the car is identical to a gasoline car. You have to consider the wear on the transmission and suspension and all other parts. Defiantly have a qualified mechanic check the car over real good before you hand over your money for the car. - Shane A

2)   If you look after it well, it should still last quite a while. Yes, diesels are usually robust, especially the older generation European diesel engines.

As mentioned, just watch out for things other than the engine that need repairs, like the transmission and suspension system. - Chris

3)   I just sold my 92 golf 1.6 diesel with 150k miles on it for $500.. $2,000 is too much for that milage. The engines are unstoppable. With proper maintanence, theres no reason the motor wont last you to 400,000k miles. Things that went wrong with my golf were -rear brake lines rusted and burst, diesel pump leaks, theres a coolant flange thats common to fail. The transmissions are strong too as the car doesnt produce much power, its hard to do much damage to it. Get it checked out by a mechanic but dont pay that much for it. You should be able to find one with lower milage or for a lower price. They're also quite cheap to insure which is nice. It doesnt get you there very fast but it will get you there everyday and cheaply.. Its a very functional car without any bells and whistles. Only reason i sold mine was a newer tdi came in on trade for a great price - Clinton

4)   Others are saying price is too high.
I think not. With all the services and parts the owner has done, that makes the car a good deal in my book. Plus, it seems to me that the car is well maintained.
I'd buy it for that price. - fenton

5)   8 months, 6 days, 3 hours, and 54 seconds. - Ddawg Thawton

Question 2
What percent of car accident injuries are due to a VW Bug without a front engine?...  My mom is completely persuaded its a death trap to not have an engine in the front of an old VW bug. Source of info is needed as well.
Oh and I told her the positive answers and she still thinks they were a miracle maybe I should bolt in a steel shield.

Answers
1)   No...they're death traps because of the way they handle. - Hank Scorpio

2)   No airbags+most likely no seat belts+rear engine = death trap - Landon

3)   all cars are death traps. its mostly about how you drive. if you dive like an @ss you have a better chance at driving. i drive a 1970 bug everyday and im never scared that im going to crash. when you drive a bug you need to drive much more defensively and keep your eyes on the road.

IMO they should stop making cars safer because that gives people the idea that "well i got air-bags all around me, so i might as well drive like a nut" and thats why there are accidents. if they made all cars unsafe people would HAVE to drive carefully or get killed in minor crashes

but anyway, yes bugs are not as safe as a new car but there are still over a million out there being driven daily - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

4)   Here is a personal experience with an accident :
I was driving my 1972 VW Beetle home after working the nite-shift. I fell asleep at the wheel and rammed into a stopped car . I was going about 50MPH. Of course, it stopped the Beetle, but the car I slammed into was shoved across 3 lanes and over a cement curb , coming to rest 6 feet from a gasoline pump.
Fortunately, I had my seat belt on; my left elbow was bruised and my chest ached from the belt. Otherwise I was unhurt. The guy I hit was admitted to ER with a hurt neck.
Later, I was told that the car I hit was 'totaled' by his insurance company. My Beetle was repaired, and was driven for many more years.
So I can vouch from personal experience that the Beetle was a robust, solid car for me.
Remember, just because a car has its engine in front does not mean it is safe.Almost all cars built from the 1940's up to the 1980's had their engines up front. There were many instances of fatalities occuring when engines smashed thru into the interior, crushing the driver/passengers. Nowadays, all cars have 'crumple-zones' engineered to protect ppl from this type of accident.
So bottom line, my opinion is that driven alertly and with sense, the Beetle is just as safe as any car built during its era. However, if safety is a prime factor, you might consider a newer car. If you want the Beetle shape , I 'd recommend a New Beetle. It has all the safety features you can list and then some.
Our 1998 New Beetle was never in an accident, but we trusted its safe design. Great, reliable car.
Drive safely whatever you choose to drive.... - fenton

which is not visible, also the left side intake manifold will have
a vacuum port and often times these leak which will make the
carburetor seem as if it is malfunctioning. - Pat

Volkswagon Phaeton Buying Question?...  The more and more I look at this car, it makes me want to buy it.

It is used.

But it is an LS killer and gets close to the BMW and Mercedes top enders too.

At 2/3 the price!!

The more reviews I see about this car are that it has eh best seats, most comfortable all around, and great to drive around in.

Knowing Volkswagens, I searched around for reliability questions, but saw no reviewers say anything about reliability.

So, should I get it? It is an Audi A8 for 30k.

Answers
1)   Wow...you're really smart! People should be lining up for a used phaeton by your logic. With that 7.5 second 0-60 and 15 second 1/4 mile this car should be unstoppable at the mcdonalds drive thru.

Um...really. You're asking this question? Get a W12 phaeton (you mention the v8 weaksauce) then get your ass kicked by a mazdaspeed 3 and then go cry in the corner. - Hank Scorpio

2)   The Phaeton is a mixed bag; unless your dealership also services Audi's, you probably won't be a welcome sight for the service department staff. Although it shares the chassis with some other makes in the VW stable, its a very rare sight for the VW dealerships. Parts that are unique to the Phaeton will require that they be ordered and in most cases come from the National depot, not the local facing parts Depot.

The electrical system can be a nightmare; miles of wiring, various electronic controls and servos and relays control various functions on the auto. I have not had to work on one, but I know others who have and they hate it. The engines are a known quanity and that's good; the V8 model engine is reliable enough, but like the 12 cylinder isn't happy on low octane fuel and requires synthenic oil changes with oil meeting VW standard 504.00. Fuel economy isn't bad on the v8, the 12 gets poor milage even considering its performance. I've driven the 12 cylinder over a weekend and agree its a nice vehicle, but fuel economy is very poor, averaged only 13 mpg on a 50/50 city-highway split.

Since so few were sold, its little wonder that you won't hear much about it. I haven't seen one in 3 years and some dealerships still had one in stock (only specially appointed dealerships were allowed to sell them new) over a year after VW stopped importing it into the US. VW originally had special hot line support for both parts and service questions for dealership staff; VW dealership support was often nill and we were left to fend on our own.

Audi dealership service departments are probably better equipped to handle service on this vehicle; they've seen the 12 cylinder engine and the underpinings are similar to the Audi A8, as you point out. VW has no comparable model.

Depreciation is very heavy on these autos; that's why they are so cheap to buy used. I agree that they are a good driving car, but if you buy one, you'll need to keep until the wheels fall off... if you try to resell it you'll need to discount it heavily before you can sell it. You'll need to pray that the electrical accessories don't fail; parts are expensive and rarely in stock. Given the past history of VW electronics and electrical, I'd pass unless the price were extremely attractive. Set money aside for repairs and maintanance isn't cheap, especially for the 12 cylinder motor.

Hope this helps, a car nut. - a car nut

3)   You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com - Ben

There is a 3 line D symbol and a 4 line D symbol do they both mean full beam? On my dads and instructors car it displays 3 line D symbol on the dashed board for full beam. So what the hell is the 4 line D symbol for?

2)   on a vw it should be the 3 line symbol on the indicator stalk to be pulled forward for the full beam. Its not a D its supposed to be the shepe of the headlight lol.
the 4 line could be the rear fog light. that should be on the switch for turning the dipped beam/headlights on.

Answers
1)   They're cute cars. They're usually on the smaller side & they seem very cozy. Unfortunately, they don't have great safety ratings. - Peter Rabbit

2)   Well it depends on what kind you are asking about. However we are a VW family and like them all! Started with a 1968 VW Bug and then they multiplied like "bugs" do. We added 2 - 1967 bugs and I fully restored one of them and my son made a baja bug out of the spare parts left over on the other one. Then added a 1989 Golf, 1990 Golf GTI, 1990 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, 1982 Caddy "VW truck", another 1968 VW Bug, and a 1990 Vanagon.

Talked my parents into buying a 2010 Jetta TDI and they love it too.

They are cheap, well made (if you get the ones made in Germany) and long lasting! I mean where do you ever hear of a 40+ year old vehicle getting 35 MPG? There is a whole "following" out there of VW clubs for air cooled or water cooled models and its kinda like joining a family when you buy one...especially the older ones. They are easy to work on and I think a great car for kids to learn on, cheap to register and insure too. There is so much to like and since your question was very vague I am not sure what you want to know....all I have to say is YES! :) - peppertaz

The only one that I have knowledge that has had a long term owner has not been impressive.
However satisfaction with a car is so dependent on keeping it maintained right. So make sure it receives service on a regular basis and that the maintenance schedule is followed. - Old Man Dirt

7)   Do you know who the previous owner was? If yes, do you know how well the car has been maintained? Is it a turbo? So many more details needed to give a good answer. You should be alright if it has been maintained well prior to you owning it. Others have said "German Engineering" and they are correct. This is a good thing. I own a 2005 BMW 325i and have had literally NO problems with it. I am the original owner and I have maintained it fairly well. That is the key to any car lasting a good long time. - brian w

3)   I think that they are rather shallow.
I just saw one today that to me typifies the people who buy one. A little old lady driving a yellow one, there was a bunch of flowers in something beside the steering wheel. All prim and proper, trying to look pretty.
Then there is the one the woman vet owns, which I gotten to help push to the side of the road out of traffic because it stalled on her and would not restart.
Some how I have to admire those that drive such cars. It has to take a lot of courage to buy such a break down prone car.
Well it goes deeper then that, I owned a few british cars (Triumph TR 4's) and they treated me the same way (not wanting to restart at embarrassing times). It was a love hate relationship. - Old Man Dirt

4)   depends on the color, the more flashy colored ones are usually driven by stuck up chick that think they own the world and they can do whatever they want, this is true especially if its a convertible. other drivers of the VW bug seriously did not put functionality into what they were looking for in an automobile due to the lack of trunk space all around car space period. bottom line: people that want to drive a "cute looking" car buy VW bugs - smexy_kid

Is it true that Blink 182 is back?

Question 1
Is it true that Blink 182 is back?...  Theres rumors that they are back and that they are not so i really wanna know whats going on with them... And are they making a new album? Send videos or blogs for proves

Answers
1)   no sorry. - ChrisC

2)   They are back together and just did a tour or a couple of shows in Europe. I don't know if they are doing an album or US tour. The drummer won't fly (for obvious reasons) so he is on a cruise ship right now coming back from the shows in Europe. The guitarist is doing a show on Fuel, I'm sure you can get some info on the show online somewhere - BalloonRich

3)   Yes, they're back. They just did a Europe tour, and they did a US tour last summer. Travis is currently on a boat back from Europe, and when he get's back blink is going into the studio. They are also playing a single show in CA.

Mark, bassist, is currently doing a show alongside with blink. Travis, drummer, is releasing a solo album in the upcoming days along with blink. Toms, guitarist, other band, Angels and Airwaves, is submitting a movie to Sundance. - David

4)   I can tell you just about anything you need to know about an old Volkswagen, but I have no idea about anything that has to do with Blink 182. - Aircooled Chick

Question 2
Is it a good idea to buy a Jetta?...  A 2010 Jetta TDI for about about 26,000 from a VW dealer. Is this a good buy? Are there any drawbacks to the car?

Answers
1)   If it's new okay...if it's used forget it. Is it a good idea to buy a vw/jetta? Not really unless you only plan to keep it for a couple years (under 40k). That's my opinion...the transmissions are garbage. - Hank Scorpio

2)   VW Jetta is a good piece of Engineering marvel. But expensive to maintain. Service quality is poor. - tvl

3)   Pretty sure your in Europe and pretty sure the other two answers are from USA. There is a problem with US VW, they are made in Mexico ! There is a brand new American plant being built. As your car is really a Golf with a boot, you should note that the Golf has just won two seperate car of the year awards in "What Car" magazine. In reality the VW is as good as anything on offer in Europe and better than most. If you keep the car for 3 years and do 60k miles you are talking about 3 to 4 services. This depends on whether you have the car on the "Long life" oil. The car will typically do 17 to 18k between services.Push the dealer to service the car for you and you will only need to bother about 2 more services if you dispose of the car by 60k miles. Servicing is not the be all anyway. I have a Golf 2005 model with 118k and the exhaust is the original, the clutch was changed at 78k and I have just changed the rear discs which were the original ! I can state with certainty that most mainstream manufacturers parts will not last this length of time. - L G

1)   Sounds like you're running really rich, chances are your carb jets are wrong. Take it to a shop that has access to a Wideband-O2 sensor and a Dyno and let them tune your engine to a proper air-to-fuel ratio. - dmocrsi

2)   You might need to replace/overhaul the distributor. The advance may not be working, or it may have gotten stiff over the years. - Old Man Dirt

3)   yeah check the air/fuel mixture, timing at full advance. what distributor are running on the motor? what carb is it and what size motor? also check for vacuum leaks around the base of the carb and the boots for the intake manifolds on each side. my $$$ would be on a vac leak somewhere. spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb where it sits on the manifold and on the intake boots. if it bubbles or the engine RPM changes. you found your leak. - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

Why do a lot of people hate VW's?

Question 1
Why do a lot of people hate VW's?...  I was thinking of getting a used VW beetle but hear a lot of negative things about them like whats wrong with them or why do they have so much negative criticism ?

Answers
1)   Why wouldnt you,, gay german hitler cars. - Boost Logic

2)   They make crappy trannies...just like "lady" gaga!

(I totally just made a funny) - Hank Scorpio

3)   I love VW.

It's the crap out of Tokyo that sucks.

Thumbs down can't change this fact. - The Raven

4)   They're nice cars but the reason people probably "hate" them is because it's a foreign (German) car and hitler did help design a concept car that was inspiration to the VW bug and people obviously don't like hitler. They're reliable as long as you get one that was taken care of and if you like the car and want one, buy it. Once people ride in it and see it they might love it. If they don't, they can just get over it. - Dylan T

5)   they offer no frontal protection and they look like a big bug..but that's a good question, as far as being from Germany, it might apply to some people with good memories, but it doesn't seem to bother the buyers of Japanese cars,, I would think Pearl harbor would bother them even more.. - MUSTANG_MIKE

6)   The people who hate them are either people who owned one once or they work on them. VW's in the automotive tech world are know as "V" irtually "W" orthless. They look so nice and drive well at first. But you get what you pay for. They really don't last long before massive amounts of parts wear out or break. - patrick_hiestand

7)   It's not Vw's it's Beetles anyone i have known with a beetle had no problems there just ugly. - kingofny_16

8)   They are nice good cars! Typically, their after sales service is poor and expensive. More because of lack of dissemination of training materials.they are paranoid the material would be misused - tvl

9)   Expensive to fix and maintain.
Parts are expensive.
Hard to work on if you are a hobbyist mechanic.
Not really reliable, meaning they have more things go wrong with them than many other vehicles. - Stupid Flanders

10)   Only the gays, retards and losers hate VW. I own a VW Passat and i am very satisfied with this car. Good ride, reliable and above all easy to maintain. So the haters are the people who cannot afford to buy one, instead they buy pieces of shit like Kia, HYUNDAI or Japs autos. - Bogdan L.

11)   The Mexican built Jetta sedan has had horrible reliability and since it has been the top selling VW model in the US for reasons unbeknownst to anyone that is the car that has the rap. The Brazillian built Golf, Rabbit and GTi are all renowned for their reliability. The Passat is decent enough. For some reason, the German built car itself has had a few lemons thanks in large part to issues at its Enden plant, but, overall is good. The Jetta wagon is built in Germany at Wolfsburg and is excellent. - What?

12)   I just hate the design. I think they are ugly. Someone in my neighborhood drives a super old one. They do a horrible job of parallel parking that thing. Even though it is tiny it is always sticking way out in the street or leaving a huge gap not pulling up to the car in front of it so that it basically takes up 2 parking spaces. I asked my brother why he thought that was one day. I figured the driver is probably a woman and sucks at parking. He said the driver is probably constantly high because they drive such a piece of crap or the fact that it has no power steering makes it impossible to parallel park...

*What I just wrote applies to the VW beetle. I do not hate all VWs or German cars. I drive a German car and love it. - ?

Question 4
How do I test an alternator on a 96 VW Passat?...
already did the DVOM test, Running Battery voltage was 12.1, This means i need a new alternator? correct?

Answers
1)   Remove it and take in to Auto Zone, they'll test it for free. - jimmymae2000

2)   Jimmymae2000 has the best answer. My first choice would be to remove the alternator and bring it into just about any major automotive parts store. They will have a test bench where they can test the alternator. They will spin the alternator up to speed and do a series of tests. Most will test your alternator for you for free.

If it fails testing you can purchase a replacement while you are there. You will avoid paying the core charge since you have your old alternator with you. This will save you a trip.

However you can do a simple test using a digital volt meter.

Set the volt meter to the 24 volt DC range. Place the leads across the battery posts. With the engine off and nothing on the meter should read about 12 volts.

Start the engine and repeat. Now the meter should be reading between 14 to 16 volts. If the meter still reads 12 volts or less the alternator is not working. Apply a load to the alternator by turning on the headlights and air conditioning. The results should be the same.

This simple test only gives you output volts. It does not tell you the output amps. A bench test from your local auto parts store is more thorough.

Your testing tells me that the alternator is most likely bad. So the next logical step would be to remove the alternator and bring it to the automotive parts store and let them test it. I never replace an item like this without letting the parts store test. It sucks to spend money on replacement parts only to find the problem still exists. - Mad Jack

3)   start it up .then unhook the battery.if it dies you need a alternator - noone

4)   12.1 volts with the engine running means that you have more testing to do. check the fuse for the charging system. the battery with every thing off should supply 12.6 volts. engine running should be from 13.5 -14.5. - mdk68gto, ase certified m tech

Im looking to get a VW bus probably a camper. Whats the deal with the legality of the seating in those things?...  Like they have those wicked fun seats that you can chill out in and face each other and some have the table in between. But those dont seem legal... in other words. they dont have airbags/seatbelts or all that crap. So does that mean if i get a VW bus i can technically, by law, only drive myself and a person in the passenger seat? Cause that would suck. but not like id follow that anyways... im just wondering.

Answers
1)   The safety belt laws are in effect for vehicles manufactured after a certain year ( not certain what year and it will vary from one State to another.........look @ your State vehicle code laws ); therefore, if it's an older bus, like from the 60's, then there is no concern re: safety belts for the seats in the middle - Happy Gramps

2)   They only need to have what was needed when it was built. In other words, if it didn't have to have seatbelts at the time, it doesn't need them now.

I wouldn't call it safe to sit in those seats without seatbelts, but it's not illegal. Busses aren't exactly safe vehicles to start with- if you hit a car or even a deer, the people in the front seats will get squished. I've ridden in very old cars (1929 Model A) that I don't think had seatbelts. Of course, we weren't going very fast... - Mark K

3)   As already stated, whatever was legal the year of manufacture is what remains legal on that particular vehicle. It's up to your discretion to upgrade safety equipment. I have a 74 Beetle that has only lap belts in the back. Even though it's legal, I have 2 small kids and I don't ever let them ride in that car outside of my neighborhood. Just a personal preference. - Jay S

Why is my Jetta stalling!?!?!?...  The other day when I tried to back out of the drive way, the brake pedal wouldn't go down and the car was shaking as I was trying to back up. Then the same thing happened a few times after I started the car. As I would be trying to pull out of a stop, my brake pedal would not go down and the car was shaking. This stopped for about a week.

Today, on my way home, I could feel the car shaking when I was stopped at a red light. Just now, I had to move the car out of the driveway, and the brake pedal wouldn't go down and the car started shaking. I just pressed as hard as I could on the pedal and then the car stalled. I tried it again and the same thing happened. Does anyone know what this could be (other than expensive to fix)? I would really appreciate any ideas.

p.s. does anyone want to buy or know anyone that wants to buy a jetta? i have one that i would be willing to sell. it stalls, but the exterior is nice.
"stop" in the third line should be "spot"
hahahaha i wish that was all that was wrong with it!! you don't have enough time to hear everything. but like i said, the exterior is nice!

1)   Could be a lot of things.

Check for broken motor mounts. They could cause the car to shake because the engine is loose. They could also cause the pedal not to go down by stressing the accelerator linkage.

If the accelerator linkage is stressed by a tipped over engine (broken motor mounts), that could be very dangerous. - TardisAndTheHare

2)   lol i like how you try to sell it right after you tell us everything that is wrong with it - Dan

3)   If you are willing to sell it. You can try to sell it on ebay or craigslist. Asode from that, you can also visit volkswagen forums and have your jetta on auction there. Be sure to include all the specs and some pictures for them to refer to. Good luck! - michael r
