It's german for people's car, the name came from Adolph Hitler, and the car was designed/engineered under the leadership of Ferdinand Porsche
PMack

The first VW rolled off the assembly line in Nazi Germany in 1936 if not mistaken. Roughly translated it means the car of the people or peoples car.
ROBERT

If i said folk wagon, would that make more sense?

It's a German company, thus German language.

It's a "wagon" for "folks."

=)
Beth R

Germany. Volkswagen is "people's car".

Hitler played a central role in getting BMW, VW and Porsche off the ground and into engineering cars and aircraft. In 1930, Hitler worked with Porsche to release "the working man's car". The Porsche Volkswagen was born. Eventually it became it's own brand.
MISTER TWO

volkswagen comes from germany back in the hitler's days of the nazis.

Volkswagen means "people's car" in German, in which it is pronounced [ˈfɔlksˌvaːɡən].

Adolf Hitler had a keen interest in cars even though he did not like to drive. In 1933, shortly after taking over as leader of Germany, he teamed up with Ferdinand Porsche to make changes to Porsche's original 1931 design to make it more suited for the working man. (Béla Barényi is credited with having conceived the basic design five years earlier.) Hans Ledwinka discussed his ideas with Ferdinand Porsche, who used many Tatra design features in the 1938 "KdF-Wagen", later known as the VW Käfer—or Volkswagen Beetle. When Chrysler brought out the 1934 DeSoto Airflow coupe, its design enabled Mr. Porsche to finalize his design of the Beetle. On 22 June 1934, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche agreed to create the "People's Car" for Hitler's mother.

Well, Volks means People's and Wagen means vehicle

Is it easy to fix an old beetle with a thrown rod?

I dont know how extensive but im trying to buy a VW beetle from a man who told me it runs but has a thrown rod.

Asked by: CJ @ 2009-07-30 14:04:05

Answers ::
No. You have to tear the whole engine apart. Many car parts stores don't just sell one rod. They sell a set thus costing you more money. Also, for an old beetle it would be even harder to find.
Superman

It would be cheaper to purchase a new motor, and you would have piece of mind, good luck
bayareart1

I'm sorry but superman is wrong and should stick to questions in his field. yes you will need to rebuild the engine. but parts for old bugs are easier to find today than they were when the were sold at dealerships in the usa 20 years ago. I could sit here and list twenty companys who make replacement connecting rods. bugs are great because there are so many still around and so many companys still making parts for them. the quality of parts has gone up and the prices have gone down. thesamba forums is a good place to learn what is involved in a rebuild and to what degree you will need to go.FYI you buy con-rod as a set because they are part of the rotating assembly and need to be exactly the same weight and end to end balanced any diesil mechanc should be aware of that.
TomatoeP

I think it would be a blast to rebuild a beetle engine
You should go for it
You can almost lift the engine out by hand out by hand
mike

I agree with what was previously said: you'd be better off buying a new or a rebuilt engine from a supplier. If the motor does have a thrown rod, you'd have to tear it down completely and, in order to get the best reliability, completely overhaul it. New main, rod and cam bearings, piston rings, gasket and seal kit, stuff like that. Also, you'd have to make sure the crank journals are good, the block is in good shape, the heads might have to be rebuilt. But if it is something that you'd like to try then I recommend a book called "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by John Muir. It's a very good book with a lot of useful information. The older Volkswagens are great little cars and with the right amount of TLC, fun and reliable. Good luck.

Volkswagen Beetles, reliable?

I am currently 17 and I plan on getting my driver's license soon. I also want to buy a car and I really want to buy a used Beetle. Its not an old classic car, its new...not the newest newest model. I think its the 2000 model or something...I'm not good with it.

But my question is how reliable are the new Beetles that are used?

The same as a VW Golf - the power train and suspension, brakes etc are all Golf. Basically it is a Golf with a different body shell. The Golf is more practical though.

Can you tell me which gear shift is which in a 1973 vw bug?

Hey, I just bought a car this past Sunday. I need to take my drivers license test before I can start driving it but there's also another thing. It's a standard, its a 1973 vw bug. I know where the reverse is and the 1st gear from him telling me but he hasn't told me where the other ones are. If there's a picture I can look at or by just telling me will be fine too. I just want to make him proud to know I know where they are(although at this point I don't haha). I know 1st is over left and up, and reverse is you pull up on the key ring and move over left and down. But the others I'm not sure about. Thanks everyone!
I'm not taking the test in this car, I'm taking it in my mom's automatic one. I just would like to start memorizing before my bf shows me how to drive one.
But I thought were #2 was that the reverse was that one. Or is it both you just have to pull up the lever then do it?

if you take into consideration that the average person drives 12,000 miles a year then yes. being a 2001 with 40K miles means the owner(s) drove it an average of 5000 miles a year. Well under average. I bought my 2003 VW with 45,000 miles already on it.

It is likely the glow plugs but you really ought to have it looked at.
L G

Diesel engines are different from gasoline engines in that they do not have spark plugs; the fuel ignites as a result of compression. When starting the car, make sure to wait for the glow plug light (within the tachometer, looks like a squiggly line) to turn off--this warms the engine up, and helps the diesel fuel burn more efficiently and powerfully.
As you run the engine, it warms and operates more efficiently--and cleaner--so there is less smoke.

Your car sounds normal, but may be helped by a new set of glow plugs. In addition to starting the car, they stay on for up to five minutes to help the engine reach a good temperature.

Question about Volkswagen Type 2?

If you take the time to learn all the idiosyncracies of a volkswagon, and how to properly drive and work on one, they are great cars, but they dont tend to stand up too well to head on collisions. Otherwise, they can last a long time, and can be built to performance standards more cheaply than some other cars.
nick nameless

It's true that any year of a type II will not meet modern safety standards, however, having said that, they can be reasonably reliable transport given some simple modifications. You also need to drive defensively, given the lack of power that they have stock. So your mother can take some comfort in that you won't be doing "drag strip races" in a stock bus.

Probably the largest issue with a type II (especially one that is stock) is that they are too s-l-o-w to accelerate even in city traffic. When I started with VW over 25 years ago, people were installing 4 bbl carbs, webbers, and all sorts of other modifications to improve performance which borders on the unsafe. Avoid the automatic transmission at any cost; parts are hard to come by and it drains whatever power the engine has...

You can visit websites like I think its samba for information about air cooled VW's and making various modifications. Even if you can improve the power and improve the defroster set up (the two biggest issues with a stock type II), the wind resistance and safety issues will always remain.

There simply is no frontal protection for you in a front end impact (even if your unit has the spare tyre mounted in front), and the doors lack impact safety beams (they aren't very thick), and the heater (unless you have the dealer installed gas heater-- yes, I said gas powered heater), you'll freeze in temperatures below 40 f.

At least starting in 1971, disc brakes became standard; the 1975? and later models have fuel injection which increased power and got top speed to about 70-75 or so.. (the old beetle motor used on 1971 & earlier models had a top speed stock of 65 or so).. but today the fuel injection system is prone to vacuum leaks, electrical ground circuit faults and hard to find fuel injection replacement parts for the system.
At least you can buy aftermarket carburetter set ups that are reliable and offer better power than the original Fuel Injection system.

One final thought is that all those things you take for granted in today's cars aren't in the type II: power steering (though its not really hard to steer), automatic transmission (avoid, see above), no air conditioning (some aftermarket systems were made such as DPD air and frigking come to mind, neither of them are in business today) but you could probably have someone install classic air conditioning system in it, but it won't be cheap. Other things are probably far less important: no cruise control, power locks or windows (though someone could install these) and other sorts of convenience features we take for granted today.

I'm not saying you cannot make it a daily driver; I drove a 1962 Rambler Classic station wagon w manual trans, steering, no radio or heater/defroster for a while when I was younger. But, I don't think I could go back to driving something like that every day now. As a weekend machine, sure, just not daily.

What does this noise mean? (2001 Jetta VR6)?

My automatic 2001 Jetta VR6 has started making this strange noise. Its a small thudding as the tires move forward. The best way to describe it is its soudns like I have a nail stuck in my tire and its hitting everytime the tire rotates.
I've rotated the tires and there are no holes and the tread is still good. I hate to take the car in to the mechanic because VW work is always so exspensive. Any suggestions?
I already rotated the tires and the noise stull persists.

Jack the car up and spin the wheel in question. See if it persists.
No holes in the tire does not necessarily rule out the tire as the source. The tire could have a mild bubble. Try swapping the front tires with teh rears.
goldenboy_1024

try this: turn the wheel as sharp as it goes and drive in reverse. if that makes the thud ir clicking worse you have a bad CV joint (drive axle). it's a cheap and easy thing to fix.

hi find the fuse box around the glove box area its not just a fuse box its a junction point to take the wiring from the cabin bay into the the engine compartment check on the black igntion wire supply is both coming into the the junction box and coming out into the engine bay the box is sealed and has a circut board arrangement inside. the copper strips get rotten and fail , also the fuel pump relay is plugged into the fuse junction box and both relay and fuse can blow, if pump is seised or shorted it,s well worth checking this in the past i hacksawed through an old box to see what was contaned inside vw have used this arrange ment for a number of years weather it,s diesel or petrol this supply needs to get into the engine bay and to the rear tank check the fuse board for any loose holders or traces of plastic burns around the fuse rivets i am pretty sure that vw are still using this set up it sounds a bit complex i know try visual check on fuse it,s a good idea to get auto sparks to check this out thougerly rather than go hit and miss and tampering too much with expensive engine component,s or you can start back to front and remove the tank i am unfamiler with modeltypes petrol diesel

What Could my check engine light mean?

What Could my check engine light mean?

Every time I fill up my 2007 Volkswagen Passat, the check engine light comes on. After a day or two, the light goes off. It happens with all gas stations, not just the "cheap" ones. I have to go in for my oil change in the next week ir so, will the dealership know about this problem? Does anyone know what it could be? Do I let them know its happening so they can run a computer test on it?

it could be because you need an oil changge.
lionsays4

Just tell them: they can read the on-board computer for failure codes. Just let them show them to you.
M

it might mean you should have your engine looked at?
Jared M

Maybe you should go to where they check yur engine and ask
Mike

yea the dealership can figure it out, but if you bring it to advance auto they'll check it for you free of charge. you may want to get it checked before then.
chickenjoe

it could be simply malfunctioning of the engine has a problem or trans. i think you may need to put premium fuel in you car and arn't which is why it happens at gas stations. also is it diesel??? if it says TDI then im pretty sure it is...
lee

it might be to do with exhaust emissions(hole in muffler, leaks ect). Happens usually to older cars- But should be nothing to worry about.
kay

It could mean thousands of different things. If your car has an obdII port you can check exactly why it came on with one of these.

http://www.obdcom.com/?gclid=CPv4g_ql-5sCFRlcagodk0QS_w
Mark

In MOST cars, the check engine light is an indication of a bad signal from one of the electronic components.

Most of the time, this is a sensor somewhere.

If the engine performance changes when the light comes on, one of those sensors/components is in the circuits that run the engine and requires immediate attention.

If there is no change in performance, it is most likely a sensor in the emissions control system. While this means you're probably wasting fuel or your engine is polluting more than necessary, it is not a critical problem.

In either case the only way to be sure is to have it diagnosed at a shop, where they have equipment to connect to your engine and get the codes for the error to determine the precise problem.

I've got a Toyota P.U. with this problem, and here is what I do. The check engine light comes on from time to time due to a gas tank pressure sensor; when it raises in altitude (goes up a hill) the check engine light comes on. It's not a critical problem, and doesn't happen all the time. So when I stop the truck, I disconnect the truck's onboard computer by detaching the three computer cables for five seconds, then re-connect them. This resets the computer and the check engine light goes off for 2 days to a week. Someday I'll get it fixed, but it's more annoying than critical.

I need some info on a volkswagon beetle i want to restore any kind really.?

Hi my name is Lucas Maldonado I am 14 1/2 and will be 16 in a year and a half. I am in to cars only classics and a few new 2010 cars. So my dad said i can restore a volkswagon bug at the age of 16 yrs old. So i am starting to look up info so I no what I need to restore the vw.

Like what is the best year: I think 1971, 72, what is your answer:
What good engine: I want it power full but stock as can be:
How much should I spend on it for a good one that needs work but not major work:
And what other info that can help me thanks:

[Best Answer]OK Lucas..here are some guides for a 'first timer'

1) Look for a VW from '66 or later. That will give you a 12 volt system and eliminate the problem of finding replacment parts for the older 6 volt one.

2) Look for a good shell with a transmission (and maybe an engine). The shell should be free of rust. Look for rust in the door frames and under the car... If it is badly rusted pass on it because it is either hard or expensive (or both) to repair it. A rotted out battery panel (under the rear seat) is different.. and is easier to fix.

3) Check the front end for repaired damage. Its not hard to fix, but for a first time project you would be better to skip it.

4) If you get a superbeetle after 72, look for rust and rot below the rear window near the vents... if it is there skip it.. also hard to fix.

5) Everything else is repairable and repaintable..

6) Engine.. go stock 1600. It is a workhorse engine that, if taken care of routinely, will last a loooooong time. In California, stay under 73 when all the extra emission package sucked up power.

7) If you pull the engine, install a new clutch and throwout bearing as a routine step. Its easy to do and avoids having to pull the engine if they fail.

8) Buy a good book.. there were plenty of them written in the 70's and available on eBay or in used bookstores. They are great referenes on how to and what to...

good luck with your project... you have two years to build it, but buy the shell now.. prices are going UP.. not down.

i had a 73 super beetle when i was 16. fun car but no a/c in AZ makes for brutal summers.

I would suggest you try and get a '67 beetle. they are the easiest to work on suspension wise and one of the most popular years, also no emissions to worry about depending on where you live.

You want to start with a dual-port 1600cc engine and you can tune it and do small bolt-ons from there.

As far as buying one and having money left over, I'm not sure of your budget. I purchased mine in 04 for about $2400 and it was in complete working order. I would say go no higher than $3000 and you should be able to get something that is in pretty good shape.

Look for rust in all the usual places, lift up the backseat to check the battery area, check the spare tire well, ask about the floor pans.. etc.

Here are some websites you should become a member on...
www.vwvortex.com - all ranges of dubs
www.thesamba.com - strictly air-cooleds
edizzle

if you want to restore a bug go with a 57-66 they look better restored..

If i were you Id start restoring it now then by the time your 16 itll be done. A decent bug will be anywhere fron $700- $2000. If your looking for a bug that doesnt need major work then make sure that the pan has minimal rust. Repairing the pan will take awhile to fix . As for the engine, a 1600cc duel port will give you enough power but if you want a little more then id go with a 1776 or 1914cc engine witha a good set of carbs.
Jack D

best place to look and buy for restoration will junk yards you can find a good body and floorpan. then comes the engine and transmission also junkyards are good the rest you can buy new or used from any where. the 1600cc was the most common so it'll be easiest to find parts.

What do you think about the old vw bugs?

I was looking at an old car to do a minor restore on when I turn 16. I found really the most practical car would be a Volkswagen Beetle. Its economical, cheap to buy, lots of parts still available, but is this kinda a lame car for a 16 year old guy?

Asked by: wmswilson1 @ 2009-07-28 21:01:52

Answers ::
Honestly, you can make any car look good, whether its a Beetle or not. I've seen some pretty sick old Beetles at my school. It all depends on how you make it look.
MammaMia!

Bugs are so easy to hop up. I had a 66 that turned 13.78 in the quarter when I was a kid.

Headers, larger carb are easy to install - and if you want to increase CC's you just add bigger cylinders. They are a blst to work on, and being air cooled you don't have to worry about coolant leaks.
Tim B

youll always get comments from people saying how they had a bug back in the day and that they miss them. Youll learn alot about cars with one of these and if you have a small budget then this will work out perfectly.
Jack D

it isn't lame at all. i'm 20, i just bought a '73 beetle to restore, within FIVE minutes of driving down the road i had people commenting at stoplights about how i had such and awesome old car ^_^

so no, it isn't lame don't worry. besides, the old beetles are super easy to work on. can rebuild entire engine in a day by yourself. I would suggest renting the "how to keep your Volkswagen alive forever" book from a library or somewhere and reading it if you want to work on old beetles. helped me fix mine right up!

Avoid Autozone and Advanced Autoparts for VW stuff, and usually quality auto parts in general. Carquest sold me a water pump that is made by a manufacturer that supplies VW with some of it's factory equipment.

However, if you are doing a water pump, you should do the timing belt and components, as you might know. There are a few places to buy a whole kit that will include everything you need. Hardly.. you will easily fit into the car. (I assume your concern is your hair sticking up above the windflow).

(BTW) it is not your overall height that is the issue, it is the length of your torso from the hips up. (Some people have short legs in comparison to their overall body height). But 5'7" is easily in the comfortable range..

I'd say the 2006 GTI.
Zac C

if they are both stock, i would say the gti, especially if it has the dsg gearbox in it. If they are both 4 cylinders then the 06 will have 20 more hp if it is the newer model (Mk5 vs. 2005-2005.5 Mk4 GLI's.)
eten_23

the 06 gti will be faster

2005 GLI = 1.8T 180hp
2006 GTI = 2.0T 200hp

The GTI will also have the better automatic tranny as it is DSG which can actually shift faster than a traditional manual transmission. The GLI still had the slushbox in that gen.

if a volkswagen beetle timing belt breaks, what else can it affect?

Asked by: javier @ 2009-07-27 14:28:26

Answers ::
You'll need the throw a new engine in it or replaced the head, I would run a new motor. It happend to me and thats what i did. I can find you brand new 1.8T and 2.0L.
Brian

Um lol... First, it's gonna bend your valves against the pistons so your valves won't seat correctly, and your pistons will be missing big chunks out of them. Yeah, after that, it's done lol. Time for a new head and pistons.
Calvin W

Changing the timing belt every 60K miles is cheap insurance, repairing the damaged engine is way more expensive, especially the 1.8T, its a five valve per cylinder Audi sourced engine, very costly to fix the bent valves, if as previously mentioned pistons were not damaged.

Day time running lights usually turn on with the car. They won't turn on if the parking break is engaged.

If you hit the toggle switch on the left of the steering wheel your daytime lights will come on. It looks like an AC knob, to the right is On and to the left is Off

If this doesn't work, your car may have a malfunction.
The Wonderful Jimmy Page

Are you talking about the day time running lights?

Here is how to do it on a 98-02, it might work on yours:
http://www.newbeetle.org/forums/technical-how/1168-disabling-daily-runing-lights-drls-how.html
:-)

I'm assuming that you're talking about the daytime running lights, because I can't imagine anyone driving in the dark at night without headlights. Frankly, you shouldn't try to mess with anything like that, because it's a safety feature. If its an absolute necessity that they're disabled, it would require you pulling out the headlight module and either bending one of the metal tabs on the back, or wrapping it with black electrical tape, and theres a lot of the little tabs and don't want to select the wrong one. You can temporarily disable it by pulling up on the handbrake ONE click, which will disable them, but I wouldn't recommend that.

The Wonderful Jimmy Page

Well since in Canada, one experiences a variety of seasons i would recommend (in order if recommendation) a bigger Volkswagen such as:

Volkswagen Touareg
because its a luxurious SUV
it was designed as an off-road vehicle that could handle like a sports car
available in V6 V8 and V10 Tdi
only weakness i would worry about is fuel economy
its a good idea because in summer you can cruise with its sports car feel, in winter it powerful enough for the road conditions

Volkswagen Tiguan
more sporty
less practical
available in 2 bodystyles

or one could always go for a Golf, or even a classic (Karmann Ghia or Cabriolet)
alramg999

Wonderful Jimmy is correct that the R32 is an awesome car - bit heavy - but .. I doubt its what you are looking for. Generally for Canadian driving conditions I would recommend Rabbit or the 2010 VW Golf - Rabbit replacement. You should look at the weight of vehicles when you buy them as much as the HP or Torque. Rabbit is 3000lbs, Touraeg is 5000lbs and corners like a boat.

[Best Answer]I bought my wife a 2005 Jetta with the 2.5 engine.
The Jetta has proven to be super-reliable. We use it as a daily commute car . But where the Jetta really shines is when its vacation time! With the roof rack ,we load up our bikes and kayaks and head for the mountains or the beach. And there is plenty of room to take a friend or two....
We get abt. 32 MPG and have plenty of power . The Jetta features disc brakes front and rear, something competitors dont offer. The suspension [indeed the entire car] was designed in Germany for the Autobahn (they still have unlimited speeds there). It must pass rigorous safety standards.
We have driven the Silver Jetta for 75,000 reliable miles. It has never let us down.
The only "Con" we can think of is that we wish it only had 30k on it !!

Pros:

-very rust resistant

cons:
-expensive services
-electrical issues (switches, harness, coils)

If the money is tight - look into 06+ Civic or Corolla cheaper in the long run, but lacks the visual appeal.
eg6ajk

There are no "cons" for a Jetta [that I know of], which in Europe is called "Golf". I have owned three. My current one is from 2000 and still running like a dream.
Hardhat

great for your first car, drives nice reliable, nice power, lasts long, and if you maintain it volkswagens drive forever
Problem

Well, the Volkswagen is well made, specially for the US. For a woman I would say that it is a good choice, because it is not to big, ( driving in the town, finding parking place), but not to small, I mean that there is space for your friends also or your stuff if you are travelling. Generally the engine works well, depends also what type of engine, diesel or petrol, ( 2.0; 2.5.... turbo, TDI, FSI) there are several type of engines, I think that the best is a 2.0 TDI or 2.5 TDI, so I suggest a diesel engine, it does not consume a lot, works well, it has power!
About the materials used in the car, interior, well I suppose leather, fine leather, which makes the car tuff, but also a gentleman...
Contra, Jetta has a new model since 2007, so this old model, which was designed in 1999, is a little bit old fashioned, at with time it will loose from it's price a lot, so after a time, if you wanna sell, you will get less than you have payed for it!

This info can be found on the inside of the gas door.
I drive a 2006 GTI and use premium only, as recommended.
It only costs $2.40 extra to fill my tank [at 12 gallons] The tank holds 14 gals, but usually I dont let it get that low.
Now , really , what can I buy with $2.40?! With the fantastic MPG I get, I only fill up abt 3 times a month. Wow, $7.20 a month for premium !!! OMG!
Bottom line; my car gives me so much driving pleasure that I would gladly spend much more than that if I had to.
Thats my way of looking at it anyway.....

It's a turbo car, it needs premium fuel.

What colour VW should i get?

I love Volkswagens myson what color should I be at?

Brown.

It is the closest to poop.

Maybe throw some yellow spots on it to look like corn in the poop.
Jake C

Get silver, because silver is a colour that you can get for VW and it is easy to keep clean.
The Wonderful Jimmy Page

depends what car it is, volkswagen what? it also depends on what you will use the car for

some cars such as Volkswagen Golfs look good in many colours such as black, white or silver

Volkswagen Beetle - white or red

paint it black if you dont use it that often becasue black will display all the imperfections because it absorbs light

paint it white if you use it more often because imperfections will be hidden more because light is reflected

mabye red for a sportish feel

depends on what you want
alramg999

Yellow.
it's like the coolest color.

whats faster a 2001 jetta vr6 gls or a 2001 jetta vr6 glx?

jus wanna know what the diff is.

neithers faster in any noteable terms.
You don't get really faster till you change to a WRX STI
Lukesfather

Assuming they both have the 174-hp 2.8-liter 6cyl, neither. They're basically the same car.
lukin

The only difference is that the GLX is a higher trim and comes with more options. The GLS is closer to the base model and has fewer options.

But there's exactly the same engine in both cars.

I have a 1996 Passat with about 200,000 miles. How long can I drive it with the mileage being so high?

The car works perfectly, drives like a dream, etc. but the mileage is a little high. Is there a maximum mileage before it starts having a lot of problems, etc.?

Dump it. It will not last that much longer.
URI (from Canada)

You can keep any car for as long as you like, as long as you maintain it well.
loaded_n_ready

I would assume the car is paid for. Keep driving it until it goes no more. I'm sure you have a cell phone, and as long as you don't take a lot of long trips I'd drive it until the wheels fall off it. But !!! The government is offering a $4500 rebate right now for clunkers. "Cash For Clunkers" rebate . Most of the car manufactures are offering 0% financing right now and have their own rebates. So now may be the time to get a new car if you're planning on buying one. Dealers are starving right now and will negotiate anything to move one off the lot, but you have to stand firm on making a good deal and walk away if they don't meet your price.
ouch

If you take care of a vehicle, there is no telling. If you took 10 engines from Volkswagen Passats and started then all up, ran them the same speed and never shut them off until they failed, they would all fail at different times. The acceptable tolerance of each piston weight in the engine falls within a certain range that is considered acceptable. But if you happen to get one where every piston was the exact same and the crankshaft balance quality was exact, The engine is going to last longer. Volkswagen has some of the tightest tolerances in the automotive industry. Clearances are in ten-thousandth of an inch increments when converted from the metric values used. SomVolkswagen engines run well over 300,000 miles before needing a rebuild or replacement.
Carl

You seem to be good at maintaining the car so congratulations. Things that normally start to wear out no matter how careful you are include low cost stuff like tires, brakes, batteries, and exhausts. That is normal wear and tear. The kind of stuff you are worried about is major engine and transmission wear. That really depends a lot on whether you drive a car really hard or on a lot of start and stop kind of trips. If you drive 100 miles a day on the freeway it will go farther than 10 miles a day on the local road. In other words, it is really hard to say how long it will last. At this point though, assuming the car is paid for, it really owes you nothing. I would start saving up for a newer car and be prepared to trade it in if it starts to cost more than $500 a year in repairs.

I drive only older high mileage cars and do a lot of work on them myself, including putting engines and transmissions in them as I need to, so I don't really worry about how many miles are on them. But I always keep an ear out for strange noises and keep an eye out for leaking fluids, these are always signs that something is going wrong.
howard

as long as u change the oil when it needs to be, and do all the maintenance. Ur car can last foreve, trust me ive seen cars with alot more millage and aslong as there unmolested and taken well care of it will last.

What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?

I have a 1973 Volkswagen Standard Beetle. I can't remember for my life. It's pissing me off too since I know the engine so well I can assemble one in my sleep. When I buy a part, I just buy it for a 1973 46hp. I am almost sure it is 1600, am I right?

Asked by: Prime @ 2009-07-24 05:53:20

Answers ::
1600cc.
Trackerrrr

It might be. Or a 1500. Or a 1300. As all these engines fit into the car. You really won't know for sure until you pop off a head and measure the diameter of a pot.
I will toss you some numbers on cylinder bores
3.031in. = 1300
3.27 in. = 1500
3.36 in. = 1600
3.36 in. = 1600 Super
Advice: do these measurements "awake"
The stroke is the same on all.
The only difference between a std and a Super is that the Super has dual port heads. so the intake manifold splits into 2 passageways which is easily seen in the engine compartment as you look toward the spark plug area.
Here are some other numbers for more accuracy(just for you)
1300: HP 50-4600 RPM
1500: HP 53-4200 RPM
1600: HP 57-4700 RPM(1970)
1600: HP 60-4400 RPM(Super) carbed.

Now you may not want to go and rip a head off.(I don't). Look at the numbers on the float bowl of the carb. Chances are if it was a complete motor swap the carb would have remained with the accompanying engine rather than swapped.
On the bowls in the casting
30PICT1 -1300
30PICT 2 - 1500
30PICT3 - 1600
34PICT3- 1600Super
But there is no guarantee there either.
And as you are walking in with the 46hp engine order on a 73 car, it is up to the parts guy to determine what to give you.
And 46 hp fits closer to the 1300cc line of engine.
You got the smallest engine that can be fitted into that car. A good motor yes, for dune buggies especially. I would opt for the 1600. So keep your eyes peeled(use a sharp knife) and your ears to the ground(sliced off by the sharp knife)for something "floating around". There should be scads of them.
My Work Here is Finished

1600 is about right if it is the orig. engine. Except for the cylinders and pistons there is no practical difference in the engine when you buy routine parts.

.
ca_surveyor

Hi, If you have the original engine, it is 1600CC like you thought.
The HP doesn't sound right though. I am pretty sure it is more powerful than that!

"...I am almost sure it is 1600, am I right?" --YES you are.

Your engine number probably lies between
AF 0,000,802 - AF 0,036,768

and is a 1600cc

Edit
If the vehicle contains the standard egine with which it was fitted then for 1973 model period 1 Aug 72 to 31 July 73.

Then it must be the 1600 AF motor which was fitted in 1972 - 73. This motor was not fitted standard after July 73

Chassis 113,2000,001 - 113,3200,000

Reduced horsepower in US models (60 to 58 SAE).
600 watt (50 amp) alternator replaces generator in mid year.
Improved intake pre-heating for faster cold weather warm-up.
Engine case near No3/flywheel is reinforced to prevent cracking.
Softer transmission mounting.
Softer clutch.
Porsche style pressure plate.
No oil drain plug in oil strainer cover plate.
New fuel pump (with cut-off valve) to clear alternator.
Paper air filter.
New ‘lifetime lubricated' front and rear wheel bearings.
Larger curved windscreen and smaller front lid to luggage compartment.
New dash in super beetle.
Redesigned fresh air system.
New interior light assembly.
Stronger bumpers.
Large round (Elephant Foot) tail lights.
‘Sports Bug' option.
New front seats with multiple adjustment.
Outer door handles get ‘two finger' indents on trigger.

on the case, just under the genny stand, the engine number is stamped.

it will start with 2 letters - these letters denote which engine you have.

since all the air cooled range use the same basic case, any engine couldbe fitted from a 1200 beetle to a 2000cc T4!

øhh... GET A JOB!!!

or ask your parents if they can buy it and you pay it back somehow
Bergi

ok this will only work if you have a defined skill,, like painting o something. what you do is find a website that pays you money for your talent for example my partner is a photographer and he got £330 for selling his photo on this site. i cant remeber what its called but it really works and it how my partner began making thousands of pounds every week......

gd luck

hope it goes well
GRACE

Well, To open a account on Ebay you have to have a Credit Card, you do not have to be 18 exactly, but you could share you parent's credit card WITH their permission. Selling things to keep track. But you must sell a lot of things to get 3000 bucks... I don't see why you are not allowed to get a job.. not even part-time? When i say that I mean "super part time" maybe babysitting or something??
Alexandra

I totally know how you feel. I've waited for a lot longer than you have for my first car. Which I'm actually getting tomorrow and I'm 21 (there's other things that needed to come first before my car). But my mom wouldn't let me get a job because she knew she was the one going to be picking me up. So I babysat for forever, then I had gotten a nanny job for 2 families and I've finally have saved up enough money for my own car. It's a 1973 vw bug, my dream car. Literally. I've seen many many of cars that I have had my eye on and it just never seemed to work out as well as I hoped for. But I've been patient enough to wait for the right moment and it's finally arrived. So just because of an impulse buy don't go and sell everything in your room just for this car. Wait on it, the right one will come along. Trust me. Good luck!

You could save your money and work jobs like:lawn mowing(I did that plenty of times), babysit, help someone move, walk dogs, clean houses, tend to older people who is needing the service, or just to hang out with them for company, do chores around the house to show your parents your mature, stand on the side of the road with a sign and a bucket, join a company for part time handing out fliers or hold signs for them, wash friends and families cars, help someone with there gardening/planting an such, hope some of these are helpful to you! Again good luck.

No. He directed porsche to develop a peoples car. Only thing Hitler did was propagate hate. During the war the vw factory produced military vehicles. Production of the beetle began after the war
convexed

All I know is his car of Choice was the VW Thing
tigerguy_tbear

He did not invent the VW

The answer is no. Here is a brief history of the VW Beetle which will answer your question and put the role of Hitler in perspective.
------------
In the early 1930's, Ferdinand Porsche and his company Dr.-Ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche GmbH designed a prototype of the Beetle Car. It was a streamlined sedan with a rear engine so that the driveshaft would be shorter, whilst the weight of the engine would still be distributed safely. This prototype was built by a motorcycle producer called Zundapp and test driven in 1932. It did not go into production though because Zundapp decided to keep making motorcycles as they were in high demand.

Adolf Hitler at this time had a vision of his countrymen being able to own a cheap car and had plans on creating great networks of roads called autobahns. Hitler invited Porsche to submit to him a design for this peoples car, it had to be cheap, economical, fast (all of 60 miles per hour) and to accommodate two adults and three children comfortably. So, in January 1934 Porsche gave Hitler a proposal for his car and by June that year work had begun. Some funding was given by the RDA (Reichsverband der Autmobilindustrie - the German Auto Dealers Association), to help pay the bills!
--------------------

NOTE:

1. The design of the Beetle has been credited to others such as Béla Barényi. See extract below from

http://www.f1db.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4616

"The case was finally decided in the Patent court in Mannheim in late 1954: The decision was clear - Béla Barényi invented the basic concept of the Volkswagen before Ferdinand Porsche."

2. It should also be noted that "...the Beetle's technical design seems to have been heavily lifted from the Czech auto company Tatra's head designer, Hans Ledwinka; Porsche later admitted to "looking over his shoulder" and VW had to pay Tatra a settlement in the 50s or 60s."

I'm buying a 1973 vw bug, can anyone tell me..?

Hey there everyone! I am buying my first car this Sunday and it's a 1973 vw bug. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I know a bit about the history but not much. A classic vw bug has been my dream car since I first layed eyes on a picture of my uncles when he was a lot younger, and I feel in love in that moment. My dad had one as well. I am now 21 years old and able to buy the car of my dreams. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I've heard there good reliable cars and all but I would like to know more. Can anyone help me? Any thing would be appreciated. Advice, maintainace issues, things to look out for, comments about them, even stories of when you had a bug back on the day or even now. I love it all! Thanks everyone and I'm looking forwards to learning more about my bug and the stories people have to share!

Also the car is painted red and white. The body is red but the hood is white. Do you think they did that since white reflects the sun and it maybe keeps it cooler? Just a thought. Thanks again everyone!
Thanks! And yes I'm having my bf go with me since he has ownership with his best friend in Cali over a bug they rebuilt in high school. Also it's a 3 hr drive up there and we have a friend who's a mechanic an will be going as well so them two and look at it. While I look at the inside. haha. But I'll let him know about the hammer thing if he doesn't already know. :)

take someone who knows beetles inside and out.

there are some really bad rust buckets out there.

listen for unusual clonking from the engine. they are noisy anyway.
take a small hammer and knock at all the panels underneath to check for rust.
being a 73 it could be Torsion or mac strut. avoid Mac strut
avoid semi auto

but the best way is to contact a local club and see if anyone can look at the car for you
Gavin R

My first car was a 1969 Powder blue Beetle.

Like any car, if you take care of it, it will last for a long time. The only issue I ever had with mine was Leaking from the sun roof and the heater sending in exhaust fumes..

So when you test drive, make sure to turn on the heater and see if it blows clean hot air...exhuast fumes could mean a leak somewhere...Open the engine compartment and look at the area where the battery sits, this will rust easily...also, look under the carpet for rust...especially if this is an east coast car where they salt the roads....Take a small magnet with you. Beetles are metal. If you put the magnet on the front fender for example and it doesn't stick it's been replaced, possibly because of an accident. Fiberglass fenders would be better than fixing it with bondo.... Do that on all 4 corners..
evaohell

Im going to give you a link on "how to buy a beetle". I used it to buy my 1969, my 1967, and my 1964 (which I still own). These car are fun to drive, fun to work on, and do draw the occasional "I had a 19XX bug and I remember..." Keep in mind though this, this car needs twice the amount of attention than modern day vehicles, BUT at half the cost. Example, a brake job on a 1999.5 jetta (that we just got rid of) cost 900 total. That included labor, changing pads, and rotors. A brake job that was done on my 1967 (new drums, shoes, brake springs, and labor) that was roughly 500. The only thing is this though, you need to adjust the brakes every 3000 miles because they don't self adjust. That is one example. Another example is this, you need to change the oil and top off fluids every 3000 miles on a modern car. On a bug, you need to:

1. Clean spark plugs
2. Lube the carb linkage
3. change the oil
4. Adjust the valves
5. Lube the chassis
6. Adjust the brakes
7. Clean/replace fuel filter (if equipped)
8. Adjust/check timing
9. Adjust/check idle
10. Adjust/check fan belt

If you do this though with your B/F, you will have a understanding and a great time working on the bug. Not to mention, parts are plentiful, interchangeable (mostly) and cheap. The reliability of these cars is outstanding. Many of these cars are on the road today which should serve as a testament to how they are.

As for the hood, it was replaced at one time. Not uncommon with bugs. If its your dream car, go for it. You'll hear that that maybe unsafe, they are unreliable by today standards, blah blah blah. Its like comparing apples to oranges. Bugs are completely safe. I can speak for myself when someone t-boned me when they ran a light, and my 69 saved me. I was hit so hard I spun 180*. It still started up and could drive, but the body damage would not let me. Here is the link:

Also favorite the website, its a repair site for any beginner. Also pick up a copy of "how to keep your VW alive" by John Muir. You'll love it.
