It's german for people's car, the name came from Adolph Hitler, and the car was designed/engineered under the leadership of Ferdinand Porsche
PMack

The first VW rolled off the assembly line in Nazi Germany in 1936 if not mistaken. Roughly translated it means the car of the people or peoples car.
ROBERT

If i said folk wagon, would that make more sense?

It's a German company, thus German language.

It's a "wagon" for "folks."

=)
Beth R

Germany. Volkswagen is "people's car".

Hitler played a central role in getting BMW, VW and Porsche off the ground and into engineering cars and aircraft. In 1930, Hitler worked with Porsche to release "the working man's car". The Porsche Volkswagen was born. Eventually it became it's own brand.
MISTER TWO

volkswagen comes from germany back in the hitler's days of the nazis.

Volkswagen means "people's car" in German, in which it is pronounced [ˈfɔlksˌvaːɡən].

Adolf Hitler had a keen interest in cars even though he did not like to drive. In 1933, shortly after taking over as leader of Germany, he teamed up with Ferdinand Porsche to make changes to Porsche's original 1931 design to make it more suited for the working man. (Béla Barényi is credited with having conceived the basic design five years earlier.) Hans Ledwinka discussed his ideas with Ferdinand Porsche, who used many Tatra design features in the 1938 "KdF-Wagen", later known as the VW Käfer—or Volkswagen Beetle. When Chrysler brought out the 1934 DeSoto Airflow coupe, its design enabled Mr. Porsche to finalize his design of the Beetle. On 22 June 1934, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche agreed to create the "People's Car" for Hitler's mother.

Well, Volks means People's and Wagen means vehicle

Is it easy to fix an old beetle with a thrown rod?

I dont know how extensive but im trying to buy a VW beetle from a man who told me it runs but has a thrown rod.

Asked by: CJ @ 2009-07-30 14:04:05

No. You have to tear the whole engine apart. Many car parts stores don't just sell one rod. They sell a set thus costing you more money. Also, for an old beetle it would be even harder to find.
Superman

It would be cheaper to purchase a new motor, and you would have piece of mind, good luck
bayareart1

I'm sorry but superman is wrong and should stick to questions in his field. yes you will need to rebuild the engine. but parts for old bugs are easier to find today than they were when the were sold at dealerships in the usa 20 years ago. I could sit here and list twenty companys who make replacement connecting rods. bugs are great because there are so many still around and so many companys still making parts for them. the quality of parts has gone up and the prices have gone down. thesamba forums is a good place to learn what is involved in a rebuild and to what degree you will need to go.FYI you buy con-rod as a set because they are part of the rotating assembly and need to be exactly the same weight and end to end balanced any diesil mechanc should be aware of that.
TomatoeP

I think it would be a blast to rebuild a beetle engine
You should go for it
You can almost lift the engine out by hand out by hand
mike

I agree with what was previously said: you'd be better off buying a new or a rebuilt engine from a supplier. If the motor does have a thrown rod, you'd have to tear it down completely and, in order to get the best reliability, completely overhaul it. New main, rod and cam bearings, piston rings, gasket and seal kit, stuff like that. Also, you'd have to make sure the crank journals are good, the block is in good shape, the heads might have to be rebuilt. But if it is something that you'd like to try then I recommend a book called "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by John Muir. It's a very good book with a lot of useful information. The older Volkswagens are great little cars and with the right amount of TLC, fun and reliable. Good luck.

Volkswagen Beetles, reliable?

I am currently 17 and I plan on getting my driver's license soon. I also want to buy a car and I really want to buy a used Beetle. Its not an old classic car, its new...not the newest newest model. I think its the 2000 model or something...I'm not good with it.

But my question is how reliable are the new Beetles that are used?

If its in good condition it will be fine. Get it checked over first

i've owned a couple of VWs and have never had a problem with them. if you can get one with low mileage, it would be great, under 10,000 miles a yr
Murzy

The same as a VW Golf - the power train and suspension, brakes etc are all Golf. Basically it is a Golf with a different body shell. The Golf is more practical though.

I think you will have to lower your sights Dan the man, the insurance is likely to be prohibitive for you at your age. (Unless you play football more a top team and are on many thousands a year)

Can you tell me which gear shift is which in a 1973 vw bug?

Hey, I just bought a car this past Sunday. I need to take my drivers license test before I can start driving it but there's also another thing. It's a standard, its a 1973 vw bug. I know where the reverse is and the 1st gear from him telling me but he hasn't told me where the other ones are. If there's a picture I can look at or by just telling me will be fine too. I just want to make him proud to know I know where they are(although at this point I don't haha). I know 1st is over left and up, and reverse is you pull up on the key ring and move over left and down. But the others I'm not sure about. Thanks everyone!
I'm not taking the test in this car, I'm taking it in my mom's automatic one. I just would like to start memorizing before my bf shows me how to drive one.
But I thought were #2 was that the reverse was that one. Or is it both you just have to pull up the lever then do it?

any classic bug is like this... you just have to screw around with the stick until you memorize what gear or position its in... my friend had the same problem with her 67, and my neighbor with his 60 something
Rembrandt!

1 first mistake not knowing the car for test
2 its a standard 4 speed H pattern
pedro7of9

2nd is back toward you.
3rd is forward and to right
4th is back and to right

It is an " H " pattern.
John H

It is an H pattern
1 3
2 4
You pull back from first all the way and you are in second. Push the shifter forward and to the right all the way to the top and you are in third. From third pull straight back all the way and you are in forth.
These shifters have bushings that get worn and need replacing to take the wiggle out of the shifter. It helps not age is age. New shifting tubes can also be bought.

Is 40k miles on a 2001 VW okay?

in your opinion, if you know from personal experience

Asked by: crysta @ 2009-07-30 22:19:34

Yes! my sis has a 2001 VW beetle with a little over 100k and it still runs like a beast. Its german engineering
mr.nick705

My grandfather works for VW and has several cars from the 60s with 100k to 200k on them. They are still running. I have a 2001 passat with 83k miles on it and it runs smooth as ever. And in your case, 40k miles put on a car over 8 years is amazing. I know some people who put 40k miles in two years.
Sean T

it will be fine with plenty of life left in it.
just get make sure you get it serviced regularly.
flamin- pants

GREAT!!!!! Be sure to use only oils that meet VW/Audi specification 502/505. Mobil One, ELF, or Pennzoil Platinum. Use ONLY genuine VW coolant, brake fluid, steering fluid, and trans fluid!!!!!
Robert M

if you take into consideration that the average person drives 12,000 miles a year then yes. being a 2001 with 40K miles means the owner(s) drove it an average of 5000 miles a year. Well under average. I bought my 2003 VW with 45,000 miles already on it.

Does a Baltic Green VW Jetta 1.8L T look like a girl's car?

Asked by: Chris @ 2009-07-30 05:54:16

Face it. "Any car "you" sit in will look like a girls car. You just have that way about you." "You think, act and look like a girl"

Go to the drags and see what color they have on their cars. Every color under the sun. Pink too.

If you are going to call green a girls color then your military are a bunch of girls.

>You inferred it, not me<
My Work Here is Finished

That depends entirely on what kind of debris is visible through the windows, stickers, etc. with 10,000 "hello kitty" stuffed animals on the package tray, yes, definitely. With a few NHRA and Lucas Oil stickers on it, not so much.

hell yea son hahah

Sounds like a sexist comment to me ? Why not go the whole hog and ask if a Pink Cadillac is gay. Is your question really worth the effort or are you just bored ?

It had a turbo kit and turbo back exhaust but that's all you can tell from watching the movie lol email the kid from malcolm in the middle, he owns most of those cars now haha
tim

pretty sure it was a wings west bodykit. the car was a 2.0 automatic with NOS. you could tell it was a 2.0 because of the 4 bolt lug pattern...
edizzle

it was a supercharged/NOS 2.0L with wing west b-kit
it was on ebay a couple of years ago...
Christopher

Hope this helps :D I know you asked for just about anything, so I've provided just about everything. Frankie Muniz bought it. Here are the specs; I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for!
