two of myt friends were having a disagreement, one says dub is slang for bmw other says its slang for vw?

Question 1
two of myt friends were having a disagreement, one says dub is slang for bmw other says its slang for vw?...  who is right?

Answers
1)   We always said it for VW - Trish

2)   dub means 20 bagg of weed. =D - amynadinexo

3)   Neither.

Dub is simply the shortened version of W.

So, whether it's V-Dub, BMDub, it still requires something else to be used for either one of those.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dub

But the common use, is for wheels. Not for cars.

So both of your friends are incorrect. - Vipassana

4)   usually means about the tires / rims. Rollin on DUBS..but being slang theres prob 3242830 diff meanings for it - .:LynN:.

5)   The word "dub" is not slang for BMW. We call them "Beamers". - Joe K

6)   vw...
beemer for bmw - onetomtom

7)   vw - movana

8)   The one that says it's for VW, there never was any nick name for BMW other then " BEEMER "
VWs have been always called a slang term of a "Dub" . - DR DEAL

9)   Dub DEFINITELY means VW.
Slang terms like Dub-head, and if you ain't rubbin you ain DUBbin, a well known get together in titled Dubs on the beach, a large VW club called Dubs of Queens, all in reference to VW, NOT BMW. BMWs are called Bimmers. And VWs were Dubs WAAAY before 20+ inch rims became popular on cars.

Dubs all day baby. - Jason J

10)   Really, this is a serious argument your friends were having? Wow...that's nearly as bad when my friend informed me that BMW stood for Bulgarian Motor Works.

But no my friend, "dub" is a slang term for VW. Say the letter w, you see how the start of the letter sounds like "dub"? Well, there you go. - Paul

Question 2
my jetta's top speed is 130 mph(on paper), but i cnt get it pass the 120 mph. why is that?...  i drive a 2009 vw jetta 2.5 cali edition. is got the car brand new, nd since the first day it just wont go more then 120, at first i thought its the limiter but then i checked online nd it said 130, it pissesme off lol

Answers
1)   From what I've found, most newer Volkswagen's are governed at 130mph, but it takes a long time to get there. A couple reasons could be aerodynamic drag, excessive load, it needs maintenance, etc - booyahbd

2)   in some states the ECU of the jetta is limited lower due to the tires speed rating, many manufacturers do this, the most famous incident being the 4th generation v8 camaros where some or them had a 150 speedo and the economy package (with lower rated tires)maxed out at 110 yet both had the exact same output in power, in either case if it bothers you that much, the computer can be "flashed" to remove the limiter. Happy Vee-Dubbing! - Lacuna

3)   Because they don't want idiots like you running into a schoolbus of children at 130 miles per hour. - Theneelster

4)   if your overweight then it wont. - movana

5)   Its like in 1949 Jaguars XK 120 sports car toped 150 mph, most today would have trouble getting to 110 mph, all soughts of reasons, example ,when the jag had its first attempt it could only get to
148 mph, so they removed the front licence plate and got there 150mph. - wayne

6)   Do you really want to go 130mph?..lol i think 120 is pretty good. - Jake

Question 3
what are main differents of petrol and diesel engines?...  plz give me more inform abt diesel engines use in two wheels

Answers
1)   Conventional diesel and petrol are both produced from mineral oil, but using different refining methods. While diesel is in principle easier to refine than gasoline, it needs to be cleaned from more pollutants to ensure that tailpipe emissions remain as low as possible.....
yes it is true and you can watch the site www.airportslimo.com - jackey

2)   the main difference between DIESEL engine and PETROL engine is is is .....
DIESEL engine works with diesel and PETROL engine works with petrol... :) - Happy singh

3)   in petrol engines combustion is done with the help of a spark
which ignites the petrol thus spark needs to be produced at
cyclic intervals for the engine to run. it therefore needs battery and an
electrical arrangement to ensure production of a spark at the most desirable time.

in diesal engines combustion is acheived by compressing the diesel
in a sealed chamber so that it ignites due to pressure. hence no electrical arrangement is
required to run the engine. it instead has a fuel injection pump which pumps in fuel at the right time
which is controlled by means of an intricate arrangement of valves.

thus diesel engines are heavier to sustain the pressure combustion, alternately they have
greater momentum while petrol engines are lightweight but have a quicker response. - holmes

If anything you should help your brother get out of that rice burner he's got. 6)   This varies from state to sate. If the state charges you on the value of the car, you can see if you are being over charged. the DMV in most states will take the high KBB of the car and then charge you tax on that. SO lets say your VW is worth 12500 and you are being taxed 15% your taxes would come out to be $1875. now if your state goes of a uniform fee, you would pay the same price as a like car of the same year. so if your friend has a 05 sedan, and you have an 05 sedan, you would both pay the same rate. Move DMV web sites will have this information listed and how they calculate the taxes. check out the DMV for your area. - gearnofear

7)   It should be $49,384 - Joe K

8)   While all the answers are correct in their own way, the only way your going to get the right one is to get in touch with your local tax collector.

Question 4
Whats wrong with my car!? 03 VW Polo front wheel squeaking - I think its the wheel!?...  Ive recently bought a car from a garage which is under a 1 month warrenty but I realised that the 2 front tyres were bold on the inside of the tyres. I took it back to the garage and they replaced one tyre but the other wasnt illegal so I had that one changed. The tracking was apparently really out and so thats now been sorted but there is a sqeaking noise coming from somewhere by the wheels. Its much more noticable when I'm in lower gears i.e. stop starting or going over small bumps. Does anyone have any idea what this is and if so should the garage I bought it from sort this out? Please help! I know what these warrenties cover! I bought the car with a 10 month MOT if thats any help. Also if I have to pay for it will costs lots and lots of money???

Thanks for reading this, and I hope you can shed some light on the situation : )
Thanks for your answers but I dont think it sounds like a loose belt - I've had one of those before! It sound like an old creaky taxi. Ive also notice that the brakes are pretty gentle but all of a sudden the car will 'pull back' like the brakes have just kicked in. Maybe I'm paranoid coz the car is new...

Answers
1)   Its a loose timer belt. It not that expensive to repair. It helps with the gear changes that's why you hear it on the low gears squeaking. Same thing happened to me - heftrr

2)   could be wheel bearing take it back to them - blue_eyesandy10

3)   Does the "squeak" go away when you apply the brakes? If so, it simply means your brake pads are getting thin and it's time for replacement. - p3200tmz

4)   If the noise is coming from the wheels, it could be one of many things - most likely brakes or suspension. You should get it checked out as soon as possible, while your car is still under warranty. Whether the fault is covered or not depends on what is in the warranty - some have a long list of exclusions in the small print.

A 10 month MOT doesn't mean you have any kind of guarantee for 10 months. All it means is that 2 months ago (MOT's last a year) all the items checked in the MOT test were found to be up to standard. - L205

2)   I don't know, but it'd be a lot cooler if you just cut a circular hole and installed a plexiglass bubble. That would probably cost $300 bones. - matty

3)   dont waste your money!!!

now that is out of the way, about 1200 dollars for a motorized one. i had one installed in a previous car. note that there is a 25% chance that it will leak. - Spook

Question 4
2003 Passat Wagon -Strange?...  I received a letter in the mail stating something about my coils need to be fixed and that if the MIL light comes on to call the dealer to get replaced. The MIL light came on and I called the dealer and he said it is nothing to worry about unless the car starts sputtering. He told me to wait until I get the next letter. Another issue is the deck interior lights (the ones that help you see the speedometer) do not come on when I start the car. I have to shut off and start again before the lights come on. In addition, when I open my car door and get out with the motor still running, the warning sound is the sound of asystole. Lastly, when I am in a stopped position, my RPM is at 15 RPM (even when the car is in park). What do you think is wrong with my car?

Answers
1)   yea - Johny B

2)   um... i think its possessedX_X - snarglekitten

3)   Its a voluntary recall by VW. Minor incident actually. It involves the emissions. So in the interests of clean air they are replacing the ignition coils in cars that are affected.
When they get enough parts on hand sent to dealers, they will send another letter.
As to your other woes, IMO just time-related issues common for a 7 year old car. You can have them checked if you take your car in for its next service. Might be something simple as a fuse or it could cost $$ .
Or you could just live with them.
On another note, many people bash dealers; I do not . My local VW dealer is kind, time-conscious, prices are reasonable, and they do it right the 1st time . With a guarantee. - fenton

4)   1. find another dealer to deal with your recall notice. obviously your dealer is "unscrupulous" No reputable dealer, or service station, would advice you NOT to come in for service when the MIL light is on.

2. the lights.... i don't know, if you were my customer with that problem I would tell you that you'd have to leave the car with me so that I would have time to diagnose that problem

3. IDK whats an asystole

4. idleing at 1500 rpm could be cause by a faulty IAC, TPS, or just a computer glitch. You could try disconnecting your battery for 10 minutes and reconnect it, and start then engine MAKING SURE YOU *DO NOT* TOUCH THE GAS PEADAL. If it was a computer glitch, that should resynchronize the computer to your TPS (throttle position sensor). - p3200tmz

first car , a classic VW Beetle. good or bad idea?

Question 1
first car , a classic VW Beetle. good or bad idea?...  I like the 50's Beetles. The ones with the oval window in the back. What's everyone's opinons on them ?

I'm turning 21 in a couple months. I have yet to buy my first car. Things have been tough with the economy and all that's been going on.

I'm looking for answers from people who own a old bugs. Is it a good idea ?

Answers
1)   i see you plan on being a mechanic, since that is a very high maintenance machine.if the motor isnt updated, it doesnt even run crank bearings, the crank just nests in the block saddles if i remember correctly.as for budget that is 1 expensive bug to purchase, and chances are the only fixer uppers you find will either be gutted, or rough running condition and still be really expensive.the plus side, 1 in good condition goes for some serious change. - idontgivafork

2)   I agree with the first responder- "Oval Windows" look great and have historical value but are hard to find and expensive to buy and maintain.
If you're looking to get a Beetle, I'd suggest a "late model," 1970-74.
They're still relatively cheap, easy to work on and many parts both "stock" and aftermarket custom are available and easily swappable between model years.
Have someone who's knowledgeable about VW's with you or study up on what to look for in a used Bug prior to even going out and looking.
It's a great first car- I know MINE was and I still own one decades later!
Good luck! - tennisballeddie

3)   If you are in technical school to be a mechanic, go for it. You'll get lots of practice.

I have a 74 and love it and have had a Beetle since the 80's, but wouldn't dream of trying to depend on it for actual reliable transportation. Grocery getter, weekend fart around car, great. Have to be to work on time vehicle.... hahahaha. - Jay S

4)   The only bug cooler than an oval window would be a split window.
I would recommend a VW Bug as a first vehicle. They are great cars and easy to work on. Once you learn how to maintain it, you will spend less than an hour a month keeping it tuned up.
I drive my 1973 VW type 181 (Thing) roughly 40 or so miles a day with no problems. I have also owned many bugs and squarebacks too. I love the air cooled VW.
If you do find an oval window, depending on what you want to do with it, you can install a '70s dual port engine in it for a lot more power with minimal work. - Rod Knocker

5)   http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ Get ready to drool and write a big check - convexed

6)   My brother in law has an oval, 57 I think. I'm told it's really hard to see out that tiny window and that makes it difficult to drive.
I think you should go with a 60s model since the windows are bigger and they tend to be less expensive. - Angel70

7)   Well if your goal is the oval style, bring money. Those command high prices as a collectors car.

If your goal is just a beetle.. its a good choice from my point of view.

1) Classic car with a value that INCREASES but is still affordable
2) Easy to work on and maintain. Even the entire engine can be pulled in about 30 minues and one beer.
3) I lacks the newer gadgets, but for just getting around it is all you need. Toss on a roof rack and it will handle MORE tasks then a sedan sometimes
4) Its short on the newer safety features, airbags and such.. you have to be willing to live with that.
5) No body dislikes a beetle. I make MORE new friends with mine.. people who stop me to tell me stories of THEIR old beetle or share a cup of coffee on Saturday morning with some really good tales.
6) Cheap to operate .. even the registration is about as cheap as you can get.

and so on.... - ca_surveyor

8)   A Volkswagen Bug is a great first vehicle. My first car was a 67 Volkswagen Squareback. If you do end up getting a Bug, you should go with a 69 or later because they have the independent rear suspension and already have the 12 volt electrical system. My every day car is a 72 Super Beetle and I drive that thing 80 miles every day, to and from work, in Arizona summers. If you build it right and give it a little TLC, she'll run for a while. - John

Question 2
Can I put brake fluid in my car (VW Polo) or do I have to take it to a garage?...  It's my first car and I don't know much about it yet! The light comes on when I start the engine and I looked in the manual and it says this means the brake fluid is low and I need to take it to a garage to get it topped up, or words to that effect.
Basically do I have to take it to a garage or is it simple enough to buy some break fluid and do it myself. I don't know much about cars but I'm not totally thick so if it's easy enough to do then I'm sure I'll manage it!

Answers
1)   Buy some brake fluid from a car parts shop. Consult your manual as to where it goes (in the engine compartment - it will go in a plastic "bottle" with high and low markings on the side.)

It's a very simple job you can do in about 5 minutes. - Max Headroom

2)   as Max above says, is correct , you should actually make a check on the brake fluid each week to be on the safe side. - john313181

3)   Open the bonnet and there is a plastic container normally on the drivers side near the bulkhead (windscreen panel) unscrew the top and there is a line on the cylinder for the correct level. You need to buy universal brake fluid to top it up don't use engine oil.Sometimes the light comes on when the brake pads are worn down or the handbrake is still on - Arlanymor is back

4)   Sure you can; just be sure to buy the right type. The label should specify something like DOT 3. The store should be able to help you, and your owners manual will tell you what you need.

Add it carefully, and stay between the 'min' and 'max' marks on the reservoir; try not to spill any, since it can damage the paint. - David

5)   Do it yourself - just nip along to Halfords and make sure you buy the correct grade - check in your handbook ( could be dot4 or dot5 or silicon - they don't mix) - staff at Halfords will assist you to get the right one - then just pour in the fluid to the reservoir. simples! - cunny

6)   Its a very simple job.. not much more then pouring some thing from a bottle into another bottle.

Two things to be aware of..

1) Brake fluid is caustic to paint so if you spill a drop or two on a finished paint surface, clean it up with soap and water promptly.

2) Brake fluid should not need to be 'added' very often. If you have to keep adding it you need to look for where it is going since its not like gas or oil.. it does not get 'used up'.

You may want to buy a basic 'how to' book for your car so you can do other basic maint. like change the air filter, or check the transmission level. All pretty basic and usually quite easy.

. - ca_surveyor

7)   The light is supposed to come on when you start it. It should then go off as soon as you release the handbrake and pull away. If it stays on it could mean a few things
1. The handbrake is not all the way down to the floor
2. The handbrake switch is faulty
3. The BRAKE fluid is low
4. The disc pads are worn past limits and need ro be replaced
You can top it up yourself if it is low as long as you know which reservoir to top up, clean everything around it fully before removing the lid, use the correct of 3 different types and do not fill it past the Max mark.
Use fluid only from a small unopened container and discard it when you have topped up as it is useless after being opened. Brake fluid is corrosive and is great for stripping paintwork so be carefull with it and discard carefully and cloths you spill or wipe any with. - Timbo is here

8)   The warning light comes on for a few seconds as a self test. If it remains on whilst driving the car it is a genuine warning. As you have the handbook - read it. It will show you where the brake fluid reservoir is located under the bonnet. Look at the side of the reservoir. There will be max and min markings. If you wiggle the car to make the fluid move a bit it is often easier to see the level. You should maintain the level at, or very near, max. It will drop very slowly according to brake pad and lining wear. Once a month should be ample to check it unless you do very high mileages. DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid is ok to use. Do not spill it on the paintwork though as, unfortunately, it can cause a permanent mark. Something they haven't bothered to resolve yet! - BARRY B

Question 4
my 2001 jetta over heats wat could be wrong with it?...

Answers
1)   Most likely a thermostat, and hopefully not a blown headgasket. - Travis A

2)   low on fluid or the thermostat is defective - Justin P

3)   it could be a blown head gasket or the thermostat or the thermostat housing as well alot of them are plastic and slowly melt over time I had that happen once before then again it could also be coolant levels or if its leaking coolant hope this helps - wolv3rine06

4)   Thermostat, water pump, coolant temp switch, plugged radiator, low on coolant because the tank leaked, the cap is bad and not holding pressure. All but the last are very common VW problems the last very seldom happens. - uthockey32

5)   I had the same problem recently with my volkswagan, i tried everything, a new radiator, flushing the system, a new thermostat, the only thing i didn't change was the water pump.
The problem was that the hot water would only get to the top cornor of the radiator and that was it, the water wouldn't flow through the system, but the heating matrix would get very hot, more so than it ever should.
Because i changed the thermostat for a brand new one, i assumed it couldn't possibly be that, but after weeks of driving me and my mechanic crazy he removed the thermostat and the problem was solved instantly, and the flow of water returned.
Now the engine doesn't overheat at all, in fact its cooler than it ever has been, the only down side isthat the in car heaters take longer than before to get hot, but i this this is a small price to pay for my engine being intact. - Carl

Question 5
Have repair question on a 1970 VW bus (Transporter)?...  I have a '68 Beetle with a '70 bus engine and the engine is not turning over. A friend of mine isn't sure why it won't start, but said that replacing the distributor cap, points, and rotors is a good place to start (there is a small crack in the distributor cap and he says the points are worn (or burnt? I can't remember EXACTLY what he said)

Anyway, I went on a web site to order the parts, and now I'm confused. I picked the right cap because it looks just like the old one, but do I need 1-part or 2-part points? How many points and rotors do I need? Here is a link to my shopping cart... I just want to make sure I'm buying the right parts for the job.

http://www.europartsdirect.com/cart.asp

In case the address doesn't work, here are the part #s: Bosch New Style Distributor Cap BSH007334, Bosch 1-piece Points (QTY 5) BSH 006102, Bosch New Style Rotors (QTY 5) BSH 031172. And, of course, I also bought a Manual - lol!

Answers
1)   Shows you why you got to take the old parts in(so they can eyeball them)so you get the right stuff.. 1 rotor. That goes for any part on any car. - the Horses Butt

2)   You said it "won't turn over". My definition of that is that the engine isn't moving at all when you turn the key. That tells me to check: battery, starter solenoid, starter, ignition switch.

Is the engine turning but won't fire up? Or is it just dead and still when you turn the key? - Jay S

3)   1 rotor, 1 cap, 1 set of points (I would go with electronic ignition so you never have to adjust points again) You should also buy a new condenser (if you stick with points)
Looks like you are buying the correct parts. - Rod Knocker

4)   What they are asking is if your old points are 1 piece or 2 piece points as a 1968 could have either set. If you do not know have some one who does take them out. You do not want to be trying to send back parts its a pain. Everything is just one of each if you have the older style 2 piece point set they come as one set the newer style the 2 pieces are already together. Also are you sure it has a stock distributor very common to have replaced the distributors in older VW's - uthockey32

Question 2
Understanding my husband's 2007 volkswagen passat.?...  We have a 2007 passat...we just finished with the warranty and we don't want to go to the dealer for everything and spend tuns of money if we can do it at home, so I have a couple of questions about it.
1. If we want to change a light bulb...can we do it, without going to the dealership? Did someone changed that without any help?
2. Did someone changed the oil on it? Is it easy to do it, or you have to go again to the dealer?
3. Can we buy a book or something that can help with this things, and if yes, where? or a website where you can see how to do an oil change, etc?
Thank you all for helping us.
No haynes manual for this year.
Can you maybe explain a little bit? is easy? did you do it??? how? thank you for your answer.

Answers
1)   1. Yes. It's easy
2. Yes. It's easy
3. No book. But the factory manual on DVD: www.bentleypublishers.com - cant_think_of_1

2)   The best advise I could give, is to go to your local auto parts store or search online for a chiltons or haynes manual on your car. It will help in alot of ways, but take time to review the manual prior to doing repairs. No, it isn't that dificult to change the oil, but it is important to do it correctly. Hope this helps, Chris - Chris

3)   your best source of information www.vwvortex.com

free forums, just register, bunch of useful info, and many many vw and audi enthusiasts. - Oleg S

4)   1. Yes you can change a bulb. Just replaced my wifes Jetta bulb. Be careful not to touch the glass part on the bulb. The oil from your fingers will cause it to pop. [All modern cars that have high visibility headlamps use this type bulb now]. Must admit it did take some trial and error because I did not have a book , but I did it. I called dealer and found it cost $25 . Just out of curiosity I called a Honda dealership; guess what? They said $28 to change bulb in a Honda. So VW dealer is not all that bad.....
2.Yes you can change oil. If you have the 4 cyl. turbo engine [same as my 06 GTI] it has a plastic tray/panel that covers the engine underneath . It takes a Torx type of screwdriver to remove. Got my screwdriver at local parts store. For the actual filter and rubber grommet , I went to dealer. Got my oil at parts store too. VW recommends only high quality synthetic oil. Check you owners manual for oil viscosity 1st. I am not a mechanic but the job was not that difficult. As with everything else in life, the 2nd and 3rd time is much easier....Like most cars these days, each manufacturer makes special tools to facilitate oil changes, repairs, etc. VW does sell these and they do make the job much easier. [ I borrowed mine from a mech. friend] . Also you will need a set of ramps or a hydraulic jack to raise the car. Like all modern cars today, VWs are built low for aerodynamics, etc.
The filter and grommet was abt.$20. Oil [synthetic was $30.
I have been doing my own minor maintenance on our VWs for many years. However, I must admit 2 years ago I have been going to the Dealership. Why?
Because they only charge $80 for an oil change. I'm in and out in abt. an hour. I dont have to run around buying oil here, filter there, jack up the car, lay on the cold ground, get oily, etc. To me its worth $30 to let them do it.
Our VW dealer is competent, friendly, cost competive with other shops and best of all they treat me like a 'king'. I have never felt like I have spent 'tons of $$ ; they always do the job right the 1st time.
So thats my 2 cents worth..... - fenton

5)   does not matter if the book is not for this year. The cars are similar year after year. But get a repair manual. It answers all your questions. I go to the local library as there are various publishers(so you might like one book better than another....because it has more pictures and explains itself better.
And by checking out the various library books first you may decide you want in in particular. Go to the front counter in the library and ask them how are you suppose to find this book in a book store. They will show you the ISBN number and that is all you need. Book store or general automotive store.
Of course you realize you are slowly gonna have to invest in proper metric tools. - the Horses Butt

is it easy to install a cd player into a 1999 vw beetle?...  like could best buy do it?

1)   i would think yes.
i actually have a '99 bug and mine was super easy.
but if you cant, ask a mechanic for help :] - Lesleh♥

2)   if u no what ur doin - Krystal

3)   I installed a cd player from a 2005 beetle factory cd player on a 1998 vw beetle. It fit perfectly! You can find a factory cd player on ebay. This is where i bought mine. You need special tools to take it out and you can also find this on ebay for like $3.00. You take out the old one and plug in the factory cd player. If you want to install an aftermarket on you have to pay someone who knows to install it. Some Best Buy stores do this. Otherwise it is very easy. - VW Man

4)   easy peasy if you know what your doing??? - Tim C

Question 5
VW New Beetle check engine light after putting high octane gas (93)?...  I was driving my girl friend's a 99 Beetle and decided to be nice fill up the tank with 93. After driving 5 miles the check engine light came on. Then later on when I was reading the manual it said 87 gas only.
What did i do and how do I fix this problem?
did i mess something up?

Answers
1)   You screwed up. Vehicles are meant to drive at peak performance at the octane rating there given. I'd go to an auto body shop without the vehicle. (or they will try to tell you its horrible and its ruined and you owe them $5000 or something ridiculous.) And simply ask i don't think it would be a huge problem it might be tricking the sensor into thinking somethings wrong as it's not burning properly but still ask in case the gas isn't the reason the light came on. - cupar

2)   I would double check the gas cap. you most likely did not tighten it down correctly. This is one of the most common CE Light problems. At least 2 or 3 times a week we have people coming in to our shop saying pretty much the same thing you just said, Put gas in it, now the check engine light is on. We remove the cap, tighten it down, in 5 miles the light turns off. Check that before you get really concerned. After that take it to an auto parts store and have them pull the codes. - gearnofear

3)   if you fill 93 you wont make your engine a mess. You have to check the check engine code in Auto Zone for free. Then you will know exactly what is the problem with your car. Right now it is hard to say anything with out the code. - VW Man

4)   No way you messed any thing up. Just check the gas cap. It has to click several times after you tighten it all the way.
My wife has a Jetta that says put 87 octane. Every once in a while, we put 93 in it. [For the cleaning detergents found in hi-test]. No problems. - fenton

my VW polo 1.4CL gave me 27 MPG miles per gallen on normal driving is this alright ?

Question 1
my VW polo 1.4CL gave me 27 MPG miles per gallen on normal driving is this alright ?...  i was driving on normal roads stop and go's

Answers
1)   No............ It's way under par, my 2.8ltr V6 Ford sierra XR4i used to give me 35 mpg, 25 years ago...! - Grey Mare

2)   How old is the Polo??
When you say "Normal roads" Do you mean town driving?
I might expect that from town driving. (if you mean US Gallons )
If you mean 27 Miles per UK Gallon... then you have problems. The list is endless:
Brakes binding
Vacuum leak
Faulty (anything to do with fuel delivery)
Blocked airfilter etc

Check your airfilter

Also, to the guy above me, MPG depends entirely on how you drive. a 32 year old 5.3 Litre Jag could do 19 Mpg... But my cousins 2.5 V6 Vectra did 12-20 Mpg, because he adopts a different driving style. - Simples xD

3)   You desperately need to get that car serviced! HT leads, spark-plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm, air, oil and fuel filters, and fresh oil. - Please punctuate properly folks.

4)   its a bit on the low side for the size of car. you should check the tyres are at the correct pressure, and giving your spark plugs a clean or replacing them wouldnt go a miss. if you havent had your car serviced recently take it in, you might need an oil change and quite possibly a new air filter.
the old VW polo wasnt excellent on fuel economy anyway, and it depends on how your'e driving, make sure you accelerate reasonably slowly, dont brake hard, but anticipate stopping early and lower your gear to use engine braking. drive in the highest gear you can where the engine isnt labouring.
if you are stopping alot this will greatly increase fuel consumption, because whenever youre not moving youre gettin 0mpg, and accelerating is very thirsty, even if its not hard (according to our cars computer you use atleast twice as much fuel accelerating than cruising)
also, have you calculated this consumption correctly? many people come up with spurious claims as to fuel consumption because they add the deadly element of guessing. How to get an accurate result is to fill your car to the brim, reset your tripometer, and when you refill (and the more fuel you use the more accurate the figure) you should return to the same petrol station, as different pumps will cut off at different points, and this could affect the result considerably (i went on holiday, runs all week, averaged 45mpg, filled up on the way home, 100 miles later i got home and filled up again and got a figure of over 50mpg - next time we filled up at our normal filling station we got noticiably less miles). use an internet calculator to convert the number of litres into uk gallons and then divide the number of miles by this.
i would say that you should get your car serviced, and with gentle driving you should be able to manage 35-40mpg, but driving in town will knock it right down. - spudit2003

Question 2
Where can i find a wiring diagram for the dashboard of a 1975 vw bus?...  I just bought it today and it needs TLC. also there are some odd caps in the engine that someone used heavy foil to cover and i need to know what they go to and where the fluids go... i am a noob vw owner, but an excited one. I can send pics of the vehicle if you are interested.

Question 3
Problem with 2000 VW Beetle.?...  I have a 2000 VW Beetle and it seems to have a problem. It will turnover and start ok, but it is not idling very good. We have to sit there for awhile and give it some gas. After you get going and it warms up, it runs fine. What seems to be the issue with the car?

Answers
1)   you need a tune up bro it will get you on the right way - E Y E

2)   It could be the fuel injectors, I'm not shure. I would try the website justask.com They have VW tec people i think. You may have to pay. $9 is the lowest. However if you dont like the answer you dont have to pay. (ive used it and never paid) Hope This Helps. Im new to yahoo and im trying to get a best answer - Kevin

3)   Choke. Even in fuel injection cars there is a choke plate. What the plate does is restrict the amount of cold air allowed in as you start a cold engine. So the fuel vapor is very high(rich) As the car warms up the choke plate backs off to allow cold air into a hot engine(which by the time it gets to the actual fuel, it is already quite warm so there is no problem with volume of fuel vapors.

Orr, you could take a look at your small vacuum lines - they may have a crack in them or have let loose near their connector. Meaning they are allowing extra air in when none should be getting in.
Sometimes that just means pulling off the hose, nipping off a half inch and putting it back on. - the Horses Butt

Its not a smart car
Its got lots of airbags, like 6? 8?
its got crazy stuff such as seatbelts for every seat including the middle having a 3 point belt and headrests. How much safer do you expect?

Are old volkswagen beetles stick shift!?

Question 1
Are old volkswagen beetles stick shift!?...  i REALLY want a 1950's,60's,70's, or 80's beetle and im just wondering if its a stick shift cuz if it is then i need my mother to teach me to drive a stick shift then :P

Answers
1)   Yes. Even with the "automatic" you need to learn to shift like a manual. - Sacha

2)   Yes they are. They came stock with 2 different style trans axles. 1 is a manual 4 speed with a clutch and the other in a stick-o-matic 4 speed. You still have to shift between gears, but there is not a clutch. You can stop with it in gear and it will not stall. They are not very common and are considered JUNK. - Rod Knocker

3)   Rod nocker is right. You don't want to buy one of semi-auto bugs tho. They are not very common and not very reliable. Try to get a carburated one, the fuel injected ones are complicated and quirky. You'll catch onto stick shift in about 2 hours. Just remember a five speed is shifted using a "controlled" slipping of the clutch. Let it out too fast and you'll stall or jump ahead dangerously...let it out too slow and you'll melt your clutch. - Serial Stunter HELBENT4ELECTION

Question 2
My 1970 VW beetle will not start on cold mornings; what can I do?...

Answers
1)   adjust the valves, tune it up and make positive the choke is working - idontgivafork

2)   I'm not surprised.................... - Bumpkin

3)   Check the choke. Make sure it is closing when you turn the ignition on.
Change the fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor
Adjust the valves (do it before the engine has been started....you want the engine to be cold)
Make sure the boots on the intake manifold are not torn
check the carb base gasket and tighten the carb on the intake manifold
If the choke does not work, you can install a manual choke that hooks to a pull knob. - Rod Knocker

4)   Most likely the air cleaner if it is not the stock oil bath unit is rubbing on the automatic choke counterweight. A simple look will tell you. Just open the engine compartment lid and pull on the accelerator lever and watch just under the aircleaner on that side. You will see a doomahickey that needs to rotate when you first step on the pedal. That is the choke plate to cut off the excess cold air so your engine runs rich when it starts cold. Sometimes a slight tilting on the aircleaner will give you sufficient clearance. But you will have to figure out a way for that to be permanent.
Not valves, not coil, not plugs, not bad gas, not age. Just simple baling wire fixin - the Horses Butt

motor problem vw passat 2003 help me?...  i was unscrewing the camshaft plug and my valve cover was off and alittle bolt fell in to the moter behind the chain or some thing and now to fetch it out i dont no wat to do and im stuck can anyone help 2003 vw passat 2.8 v6

Answers
1)   Pull off the valve cover and look into the motor with a flashlight and hope you can see it and get it with a magnet... Otherwise you'll have to pull the oil pan and hope it is in there. - loveracing1988

2)   if your even uncertain of where the bolt is you gotta get it out. If that bolt winds up in the timing belt, it's game over. I know because I have done that in the past. I was doing a timing belt and dropped a small bolt. I couldn't find it and looked all over. I looked for about an hour and gave up. I figured, "no way could it work it's way behind the timing covers". I was wrong. 2 days later the car showed up at the dealership and customer drove it in with a complaint of a "rattle". What an understatement. It sounded terrible. I got so lucky because the bolt was flopping around the timing belt gear. If you can't fish it out with a magnetic retreiever tool, then you gotta take the belts off and remove the timing covers to get it out. - runvws

Did VW Beetle cars ever come in 5 door ?

Question 1
Did VW Beetle cars ever come in 5 door ?...

Answers
1)   Yes, the bonnet was the boot, the back was the engine compartment.(the old version) - kaiser eric

2)   Not in the true sense that we know a 5 door now as the engine being in the back would mean fitting a hatchback would be pointless. The boot at the front is not anymore a door than the boot at the back of a saloon car so really if you mean the old beetle then NO - Timbo is here

3)   i believe there was a four door.but that was a vw variant. - J R

4)   No. the original VW Beetle shell stayed mainly the same throughout it's production life with small design changes. There was an estate version called the type 4 which had a different body style but used the same rear engine layout as the beetle. The engine was under the floor in the back and was a true 5 door estate. My Uncle used to have one and teased me about where to find the engine as you could put luggage in the Bonnet and Boot of the car - Hamback

5)   No they did not, but people did make them on their own.....kind of like a limo.
The type 181 is a 4 door air cooled VW (same basis as the old bug)
A type 4 is a Porsche.
I have also seen squarebacks that have been stretched with doors added. - Rod Knocker

6)   Beets never came out with a 4 door. It was a 2 door sedan. Only custom hot rodders may have cut in an extra door, but that was for a car show novelty. - the Horses Butt

7)   No, you couldn't fit any more then the 2 doors the car has. - DR DEAL

Volkswagen GTI acceleration/speed improvements?...  i have a 2001 volkswagen GTI with a 1.8L engine..it says 20Vturbo on the engine..i dont know anything about cars so my question is what can i do to my car to give it more speed..also better acceleration

..thanks in advance

Answers
1)   Well... you could do thousands of things. It just depends on how much you want to spend. You could buy a new exhaust (please don't make it sound like a rubber band about to snap), replace the headers, add nitrous if you want a quick burst of speed (I wouldn't...), etc, etc, etc... - Tyler H

2)   Here are a few suggestions on parts/upgrades you can get easily installed if you don't want to install them yourself that should provide some acceleration/speed help. Just google the parts if you dont know what they do/ are for

cold air intake
throttle body
exhaust headers

chip - celtica311

3)   I also have a 1.8t. The best bet and best bang for your buck for more power is chipping it. Its about 500 for one and it'll give you roughly 60-70 horsepower i believe. And exhaust will also add power to our car but the Horsepower you get vs the constant noise i don't find it to be worth it.

Don't bother with intake they don't really add power to 1.8t's. If you get it chipped and your still looking for more power check out getting a front mounted inter cooler. - J

4)   chip, front mount intercooler, and turbo back exhaust and you will be around 220 HP at the wheels...that is like 90HP over your stock car if you have the 150hp model - stu

Question 3
why does my vw bug keep turning off?...  i have a 1966 vw bug and this is the problem
-the car will start fine and turn on, but if i dont give it enough gas it turns off ,i know it may be normal with these cars, but this last for more than 10 minutes. i tried to adjust the carburetor but it still turns off.

-i give it enough gas, i might even press the gas pedal almost all the way but it still goes off.

thanks for reading and for any advice, instructions, or suggestions

Answers
1)   Check the fuel filter and clean the idle jet. - L

2)   Have a tune up done on it and have the carburetor overhauled.I have worked on these and they are simple to do but since your not familiar with doing this kind of work take it to a shop and have them do it.hgm20002000@yahoo.com - dangerII

3)   You need to disarm your choke, turn the choke off this will require you to give the car gas in the AM but will run. Get the old Muir Book and read the chapter on this very subject,he tell's you the way to maintain your carb. - DR DEAL

4)   This could be several things, but here is a common thing with Bugs. On the 1966, you should have a electromagnetic cut-off valve. Its a cylinder looking thing on the side of the carb that you have a wire connected to. Here is how to check it to make sure it is working:

1. disconnect the wire that it connects to
2. turn your key to the "on" position. DO NOT START THE CAR!
3. Touch the wire to the solenoid. You should hear a "click". If you do not hear a click, it is bad and needs to be replaced. If you do have a click, then its another problem.

Now, you may also want to check the points gap and timing on your car. The points gap should be .016" when the points are at the highest point on the distributor cam. Im giving you a website that IMHO is essential in your virtual VW toolbox:

Question 4
2001 vw jetta has shifting problems. Will rev high but will not shift up?...  I let my sister use my car while i was awaya at college, she has been running the car for 2 wks with barely any engine oil in it!?!??!! Started making loud clank clank clank noise as it would when a car had no oil, i changed it n it still madr the noise till recently it stopped. Now when driving it will rev high but not shift up unless i release the gas n then Press the gas again. At a stop it revs to 4,000 rpms to get out of 1st n so on till abiut 3rd where it barely hits redline b4 shifting up

Answers
1)   The 01M auto is not your friend, they're notoriously crappy transmissions. Sounds like it's slipping and It's probably toast or at least on it's way to toast. - Richard R

2)   ^ Agreed, the transmission sounds like its going out. Sounds like its slipping. Vw auto trans are the weakest part of the vehicle. Although this was more prevalent in the MK2s and MK3s, the mk4s still have problems - paintballpro111

3)   Clank, clank, clank? Are you sure it wasn't clankity clank clank sproing ding ding ding ding, ahhhh?

A car with no oil, generally overheats and stops on road dead. No more moving. It is a boat anchor at that point as everything has welded themselves together motor wise.

So, if the engine is running, there was enough oil.

Automatic transmission? Definitely not their strong point, so not even worth my time for sound effects. - the Horses Butt

4)   Do you have any warning lamps on? Could be trans mechanical related ie. low fluid, dirty fluid, internal faults. The MAF Sensor can cause a rev no shift (Mass Air Flow). Also, you may have the input and /or output speed sensor(s) failing. You best bet is to have a diagnosis performed on this vehicle by a qualified VW Tech. The clankity clank noise is not good either even if it has gone away. Have a diagnosis done to determine if putting money into this vehicle is worth it. - IKE

Question 2
Need Help With 1996 VW Polo Door Lock Cylinder!?...  My driver's side door lock had been pretty temperamental over the last few months, it used to take a couple of turns of the key to get the thing to open. The pin used to rise but nothing would happen until the 2nd turn of the key or if you tried to open it holding the handle at a different angle. Now today, it just completely gave up on me. My passenger side lock just spins and spins anyway so I was forced to clamber through the boot to open the door.

The door opens fine if you don't lock it or at least I think so.

I went to VW and described the problem, they said I probably need a new lock cylinder on both sides as something on the back of them had probably gone. It would have been £50 each side inc fitting but I have decided to go for the cheaper option and just buy the lock cylinders for £15ea. I told the guy I wanted to be able to use my current key with it and he said something about keeping the key in while you take the old lock out, and then he went on to say that with the new locks you need to insert the key bit by bit and adjust some springy things. But what do you do inbetween that?!

It all sounds very complicated and fiddly and the Haynes Manual was not much help in that department. I won't be getting the lock cylinders til Thursday so I haven't seen them yet but I'm panicking lol.

Has anybody else had experience of doing this or does anyone know of a decent guide if one exists? Were they right about it being the lock cylinders?

Answers
1)   Probably best fitting new barrels. After all,its a VW and still a great little car but cars are money boxes anyway. I used www.vwvortex.com. Got great help regarding similar prob. on my '98 Golf. - Paul

2)   your lock cylinders MAY be beyond hope but,
I'd check to see if the retaining clip is present, or fell into to door panel. this may be the problem because the pass side turns around and around,
(it's also disconnected from the metal slider bar that releases the locking mechanisum in the door)

And yes, if you go ahead and replace the lock cylinders you will have to get them "keyed" for your key or get a new key for the new cylinder. - Alfonzo

3)   i had this happen me about a year ago. what happened is the pin that attaches the lock barrel to the door pin mechanism has snapped. this happened to me on both sides of my 97 jetta. the dealer wanted somewhere along the lines of $500 to fix this and said it would take several days. I got the parts and did it myself (i needed new lock barrels and the pins that attach at the back.

After removing the cylinders from the door handle i carefully removed each of the "pins" and their corresponding springs, they are tiny so be very careful, and put them in the proper place in the new barrels. The first side took me about 35-45 minutes because i needed to figure out how to take the things apart. the second side i had assembled greased, and reinstalled in 20 minutes.

I would not suggest doing this yourself if you don't know about locks. get someone that knows what they are doing to have a look at it first. - tweek639

4)   Surely it would be cheating, and cheating yourself if you got other people to help you? The whole point of this test would be to test your suitability for that Uni...

It is people like you that devalue the University qualification and there are a lot of people who work so hard for themselves so they can get a good career. Just do your best, and don't expect other people to do your hard work for you. - lachlan

Question 3
Buying 2003 Jetta GLX?...  hi...i am about to buy 2003 GLX jetta, has 92k on it, no accidents clean car. dealer is asking $4900 for it.

I want to know if its a good deal or bad one?

Also, i want to get input on cars reliablity and mechnical issues....i am getting mix reviews, some saying buy it some ppl say dont buy it its worse car ever etc. so i thought to ask here and make my decesion. thanks.

Answers
1)   good deal - VW Man

2)   Buy a Honda or Toyota, Volkswagens are by far the worst cars ever. I have a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta and it is absolutely atrocious when it comes to the repairs. I would never recommend one ever! They break down constantly and always have some sort of problem. I have never owned a worse car; I have put around 3k into my car. Everything gets messed up, why? My mechanic says the parts are cheaply made and assembled in Mexico. Buy something you know will last. My car has failed me. Buy a civic, I wish I would have. - nnik

3)   Depends on if it's been properly taken care of or not . . . - Richard R

4)   Well, if half the owners give thumbs up and the other half give thumbs down...you really want to take that chance.

Ask those owners with positive reviews how often they do their own work on their VW and I bet that attitude changes really quickly if they do their own repair work... - alfredb1979

Question 4
96 VW Jetta 2.0 will not start?...  About 3 nights ago I bought a 1996 VW Jetta. The car ran and drove fine so I went ahead and bought it. Drove it home and went to crank it up again and now it wont start. Checked fuel, fire, and now found out it needs a new pick up coil. This is the first VW I have ever owned and I need to know if this will fix the problem. My wife and I will have sunk 200 into this car. I tried to call the people back I bought it from and they will not return my call. I spent 1300 on this car and now I have a paper weight. Please help me I need this car to get back and forth to work. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Answers
1)   try a jump start - pacemaker

2)   Does not matter if you call the people back. You can't accuse them of selling you a lemon. There is no guarantee with any used vehicle. It is buyer beware....in other words either know some mechanical checks to do, or be able to judge people well, or be gosh darn lucky.
Mind you it would be nice to know now what kind of "personality" the car has....like has this happened before....and what did they find out- did they have to wait- play only country music while they do barefooted dancing around the car to heal it?
Some info is better than no info.
Maybe it never happened to them.
You have to take them at their word here.
Many times when I buy a used vehicle, I can pretty well be assured that the battery is on its last legs. But yours is cranking over? If it is, it is not the battery. Next check would be the spark at the spark plugs (normally for me, this is one of the first things I replace unless they are new(some people do change them so the car runs half decently) some don't. But, if taking one out and then have someone crank the engine over while you hold it a half inch from the metal of the block. Does a blue spark jump? Yes, then you got spark. I check all of them with the same test procedure.
Next I would look for an inline fuel filter. Is that full of fuel and is it clean or is it blackish. Blackish is probably clogged. Change it.
Fuel injection or carb worked getting you home so there is no reason to touch it.
Maybe the fuel pump did decide to cash in.

You need the basics to make the car run...air, fuel, spark, compression
The car ran decent so compression is not an issue, neither is air and fuel and spark.
If one is gonna fail first it is the electrical component. Battery number 1 check, alternator which charges the battery 2,
Does not matter whether it is a VW or a Toyota, or Nissan, or Honda, or Chev or Ford.
Engines all work the same way. So if you have a kid in the neighborhood who has his head under the hood of a car all the time(what neighborhood does not have that kid) ask him if he would have any idea. Sometimes these backyarders know a lot more than certified mechanics. And a local garage can fix a VW just as well as they can do any other breed of car if they are any good. If they are hosers, then all they do is take your money and fix nothing.
Ignition Coils do fail. and it is a sudden thing. No reason. More than likely age. Maybe you just got ""lucky""
I would still try to contact the last owner for some "insights" of what they have tried and how come it worked for them? Accusing them of stealing will put you in the dark because they won't tell you a thing. Accept the fact it is your problem....now to get assistance on it.
I am thinking electrical, where at the moment, I cannot say. - the Horses Butt

3)   Thats a long answer. To save you from reading it:

Battery - Possible dead battery due to cold
Gas - Dumb one, i know...but it happens more than you think
Spark plugs - A plug could be loose, not sparking correctly
Starter - This could be a big one. Tap the starter with a hammer with the key in the on position in the ignition. The car should start right up. Just keep tapping. This could be a bad starter (Autozone can check this)
Alternator - Use a meter to check Amp rating (Autozone can check this)
Fuel Pump - Are you getting fuel to the vehicle? This might not be as relevant because the car isnt even clicking over. - paintballpro111

1997 VW Passat; remote lock upgrade?...  I have a 1997 Volkswagen Passat glx vr6 and it doesnt have power locks; its just key entry. How can I find a remote power lock upgrade for it? Would it be expensive?

Answers
1)   Investigate further. If anything goes wrong with a VW central locking system they fail safe i.e. like it hasn't got one. My 97 Skoda (VW group) has got central locking but it has died and won't respond to a reset. - GibsonEssGee

2)   The GLX has power locks. Push down on the knob (closest to the glass), the doors will lock. If they don't the vacuum lines are cracked or the modulator is out. - djaca70

Question 3
2000 Vw Jetta 2.0 Engine Code P0302?...  I have a 2000 Vw Jetta 2.0 92k. When I just start the car, the engine shakes and a code P0302 showed up. When the engine is warm ( 2 min later) the engine works fine, it does not shake. What can be the problem.

Answers
1)   it's a miss fire code coming from your #2 cylinder,
everything your gonna check is from cylinder #2 so find out wear it is.
hear are the possibilities...
bad spark plug wire #2
bad #2 coil
bad #2 spark plug
these are the simple ones and to figure out if it is the problem will take some patience and time
so go borrow that scan tool for the fix
you will need to swap each one of these items to another cylinder at separate times to verify when the code changes to another cylinder without buying these parts. so swap coils if they are individual example move #4 to #2 if the code changes to #4 then its the coil, if the code stays the same the coil is good, but sometimes the coil could have an intermittent fault meaning it's going out but not bad. do the same thing with each other item and retest once the code moves you found the problem. that is what the technicians do.. good luck - So Cali Guy

2)   code po302 cylinder number 2 misfire detected conditions - chevyman

3)   In a 2000 2.0 there is only 1 ignition coil pack. There is no four coils. If you change the spark plugs, wires, ignition coil pack, injector for the second cylinder and check all the connections and nothing changes, this means that air is leaking in through the upper or lower intake manifold. You have to take it apart and change the gasket. - VW Man

Question 4
This question is for "the car nut" who knows all about VW's Please answer my question!?...  I figured since you know all about VW's you might be able to answer this question. I have a 2000 VW Jetta 1.8T and when I start it up in the morning the temp. light goes on automatically almost every time. It beeps and flashes for about 3 minutes and then, when the car starts to warm up it goes off. After that first start up the light won't go on again, usually, sometimes is does, sometimes my check engine light goes on too, that's happened twice during this whole situation too, goes on for a few days then goes off. Another thing it does is lately if I sit in traffic the temp. goes up, just a little, it's only happened twice because I pull over, or if I'm on the freeway the temp will go below normal. I'm not sure my fans are going on because when I pull my car over I turn it off then turn the key all the way but not on and my fans will usually come on when its hot, but it's not doing that, although it does come on when the air conditioner is on. I just don't know what it could be! I'm sorry for so much writing but I want to get the right answer so you need the info. Also, I've just replaced my intercooler, radiator, thermostat, water pump, engine, EVERYTHING!, so I'm thinking it must be a sensor on my fans???? I also have the correct amount of anti-freeze water mix with the right kind of VW anti-freeze. Please let me know that you think! Thank you! Selling the car soon, sick of fixing it just want it to be running for the next person.

1)   Coolant temp. sensor - trish225522000

Last, let go of this car, Ive got a bus at this time and it's an old 78 that's in great shape.

diesel mechanics help please?...  i am going to lincoln tech in IN to become a certified diesel technician next fall but i would like some advice or anything that would help me become one seance haven't had much experience working on them mostly just with cars and engines

Answers
1)   I too came from L/TECH took the auto program but started working in the diesel field for the airlines while in school. Diesel tech jobs are stable, pay is good and you don't bounce around like auto mechanics. As for working on diesel it's easy, think out side of the box when looking for a job, big trucking companies (fedex, ups) steady pay check no book time. Airlines (travel benefits), Locomotive great pay good pension. I keep my skills up to date with the auto and diesel, as they say it's all nuts and bolts.
Hope this helps, pay attention in class if it's anything like it was back in the day keep away from the ones that cause distractions your spending some money to get the education but in the long run it will pay off believe me.
