Answers
1)   Depends on if I am getting paid and how much. - montezuma300

2)   Sure, why not. Only insecure people are afraid of stuff like that. - Fred

3)   If the driver was a hot looking girl, sure. - William W

4)   Sure, I wouldn't even have a problem driving it.

But would I ever own one? No way.... - chris2EM

5)   i am not afraid of pink, but being seen in a bug?yes id have to be caught and still wouldnt admit it was me.parlevous francois? - idontgivafork

6)   I would have said yes until I saw the picture. If it were a classic bug, there would not be a problem. I have been planning on painting my buggy frame pink and the side panels black. That way if I get beat down the sand drags I could say "What do you expect, it is a pink buggy", but if I smoke someone else down the drags I could say "Ha! You just got beat by a pink buggy". It works out well either way!

I would not ride or drive in a new beetle regardless of the color. - Rod Knocker

7)   I've driven a pink VW Beetle. Of course, I had just got done working on it and had to test drive it. - John

Question 2
Can I put a VW Beetle's motor in a 1962 Corvair?...  Hello, I saw a pic of a VW Beetle with a Corvairs motor in it.. So I wondering.. Is it possible to put a VW's motor in a Corvair? I have a 1962, Thanks. Post for anymore details.

Answers
1)   The engine from a VW sits upright, whereas the Corvair lays down flat - the only way to do it would be without a hood, if it even would fit - not 2 B fooled

2)   There are adapters to bolt a Corvair to a V-Dub,but not the other way 'round.Know why? Because they rotate in opposite directions. The VW rotates clockwise and the Corvair was anti-clockwise.To make the Corvair to VW swap work, you had to swap the ring gear in the trans to the other side. Corvairs are way cool, they were called "The poor mans Porsche".Most parts are still available for these cars.If you have the original engine, why not rebuild it? Hope this helps,Good Luck. - Auto A/C Guy

3)   The original Beetle used a FLAT four like the Corvair's FLAT six engine. the swap is probably not much more difficult than putting the Corvair's engine in a Beetle, as long as you're not talking about a New (not really a) Beetle, except you'd have to make your own adapters, because I doubt anyone has ever swapped the much less powerful Beetle engine into the bigger, heavier Corvair, since you usually do an engine swap for MORE power - cat

4)   With money, it is possible, but not recommended.
The VW engine is flat just like the corvair as long as you use a pancake style housing.
The reason you see bugs with corvair engines is the corvair has a lot more power and 2 more cylinders. If you want a 4 cylinder in your corvair, find a Toyota 22r, Ecotec, Pinto or some other small 4 banger. A VW would more or less be a waste of time and money. - Rod Knocker

5)   Consider that the Covair is despised by Chevrolet as their attempt and failure to take over the air cooled engine market from VW. The only thing Corvair had going for it was the engine(a flat 6 cylinder) which did not produce the same horsepower as a watercooled 6 but still that horsepower was higher than VW flat 4 engine.
So essentially you want to go down in horsepower by installing a VW engine in a Corvair. Sure you can do it(and have room for a couple of cases of beer in the rear as well).
Very similar to pulling the big V8 out of a Corvette and replacing that with a V6. - the Horses Butt

6)   Well, with enough money and time, you can cobble any engine and vehicle together, but in this case my humble opinion is that it would be a waste of effort and resources.

Lets say you DO sit down and create it.

1) The engine, as everone else points out, is vertical unless you hunt down a pancake engine, so the 'trunk' lid just came off and you prob. have to modify the rear so that you can access some basic things like fan belt and spark plugs.

2) Even for an old 1960, as I recall, they had at least 90 hp to get those 4 door, steel and fabric cars around. You have just mounted a 50 hp engine which will have to do the same work. Expect an early burn out on the engine and realllllllllly slow hills.

So.. what did you gain.. a car with potential classic value has been canabalized and reduced to something which no one will really want or care about except, perhaps, the builder.

what do YOU think?

Question 3
Why do so many VW New Beetle owners keep flowers in their cup holder?...  I've seen a trend with these cars. About 1 out of 4 VW new Beetle cars has a flower in the cup holder. What does this mean? I never see flowers in cup holders on any other type of car.

Answers
1)   Flower power was a slogan of the 60s and 70s hippies and the VW decorated with a flower motif was a popular car in their culture. The new VW has a vase and flowers as a dealer installed option perhaps trying to recreate that nostalgic era. - Howard L

2)   They are trying to recreate an era gone by "Flower power" VW vans were in high use amongst the hippie generation as they were a vehicle that was reliable for the hippies (did not see garages half as often as domestics and basically Ford and Chev did not have a van/campmobile during those days. VW always had one which was decked out like a mini motorhome. And cheap to buy and run. The hippies were the start to the environmental movement in the 60's. VW corporation caught on to the idea/theme with a flower power bug paint job on their 1971 Beetle, I think? Or it may have been the '73 SuperBeetle, in which they placed a vase inside instead of an ashtray.
Although, you had to supply your own weed. - the Horses Butt

3)   It's not a cup holder, they installed a little vase made specifically for a flower on the dash by the steering wheel. The Beetle was a trademark of the 60's Flower Power Hippie era and a lot of beetles are remembered by that so to ad the vase and the flower is kinda like and link and representation of the past and what the Beetle is known for. - rwoodford01

4)   Because they are old hippies and hippies drove old bugs. Old bugs had vases that were mounted to the dash (option). The vase held flowers. The scent of the flower helped cover up the odor from the stinky hippie. Hippies do not like to shower or wear deodorant so they stink and then try to cover their stench with patchouli oil and flowers. It kinda works. Are you sure the flower is in the cuo holder and not a vase attached to the dash?
Flowers sure look better than a pine tree hanging from the mirror. - Rod Knocker

5)   The New Beetle comes standard with a flower vase attached next to the steering wheel. While some people might put a flag in there, it is really designed for flowers. Nothing else will really fit.

I don't believe that there are any other cars that come standard with a installed flower vase. - Ladybird

Question 4
What mileage should a cam belt be changed on 1995 VW Polo?...  The car has done 117k miles now (yep it just keeps on going). I had my first change at about 65k miles. I can't find any information in the manual so thought i would ask here. Thanks!

Answers
1)   100,000 miles on most cars
mine has 300,000 not been done yet - kelly_f_1999

2)   I agree with 100,000. I think many of the dealers try to get you to change just so they make some money. But you know what? When you bring it in for the change at 60,000 miles, many of them will never change the belt but charge you as if it was changed. Please ask for the old belt before they start working. I have seen so many people tell me that they had oil changes and filter changes only to point out to the person later on that the filters are the oringinals. A belt change takes a lot of time. And time means money for the garages. Some belts drive a water pump. They may charge you for a new pump too unless you tell them ahead of time, not to change it unless its leaking. And then ask for the old parts. - it's him

3)   60,000 miles or 4 years whichever comes 1st. - Howthebldyhellru

4)   Every 60K miles So you are getting near that time. It is not saying it will fail, but you can pretty well be assured you will be safe if it is done at that time. It is VW recommendation. 60,000miles(or 100,000km) - the Horses Butt

Question 5
Are Volkswagen Beetles Safe to Drive?...
I heard that if u get in car accident in a Beetle, you can die easily because it's quite a small car. Is this true?

Answers
1)   The new ones are just rebodied jettas absolutely YES - Erics Towing & Auto Sales Inc.

2)   Depends if your drunk or not. - El Stump de Bacon

3)   Absolutely safe and fun they r super fast and very good on gas and easy to find parking for it you just have to love it - E Y E

4)   Which Beetle are you asking about? There are 2 completely different cars that have this name.
The Old Beetle is no longer manufactured. It had a rear-mounted air cooled engine. Of course, like all cars made during this time [from 1948 to 1980's] it had no air bags, crumple zones, abs braking, etc. However, it was no less safe than other cars made during these years.
The New Beetle began production in 1998.
It was designed in USA and engineered in Germany to very high safety standards. All vehicles in Germany must meet strict design/safety parameters. It is built for the world market in Mexico to VWs high standards.
The New Beetle is actually a steel safety cell that is computer-designed to protect its passengers. It has ABS brakes, ESP [Electronic Stability Programming], a firm suspension for accident avoidance, strong bumpers , 'crumple zones' front and rear, side-impact steel bars, etc. To sum it up , the New Beetle is an excellent testimony to modern day safety design. In Government crash-tests it performed outstandingly.
I know all this because I bought a 1999 New Beetle for my wife. I thoroughly researched the car because I love my wife and would not jeopardize her safety.
We have driven our New Beetle for many years and have had 90k fun filled , safe, reliable miles in it.
So, in our experience [no hear-say, no gossip, no rumors] the New Beetle is a durable, incredibly safe, a complete blast to drive vehicle.
Myth Busted!! - fenton
