VW Golf (automatic) design fault?

Question 1
VW Golf (automatic) design fault?...  Have you ever accidentally and inadvertently had your foot stuck on both accelerator and brake pedals at the same time on your VW Golf?
The harder you try to brake, the faster you go, and when it happened to me and I took it to be repaired, the body-shop chap said "Oh, yes, - it happens quite often. The pedals on these small automatics are too close together, and the gas pedal is too low, so it's easy. You'd be surprised how many we get in. "

Is he right?
I'm English but have driven across USA and back twice, and hold a Private Pilot's Licence, -which I expect is more than you do, and I drive many different vehicles including my regular Jaguar XKR

My feet are normal size and have driven both manual and automatics for many years, without problems. My question relates to one specific model of one specific make, and I think the responses fairly represent the truth.

2)   i own a garage in uk ..its not the car...its your driving style ..you need to learn to drive it properly ..only use your right foot ..and when you brake you need to move your foot over more before you brake ..and raise it so you dont jam it inbetween ..just a bit more practise ..there are millions of golfs on this planet and we have never had that problem show up before - boy boy

4)   That's nonsense. You can rest assured that if this was a "built in fault" VAG would have been sued by now. I can easily drive my companies 2006 DSG Golf TDI in my steel toe capped work boots which are size 9.5. - L G

5)   Yes, it happened to me, and it is not true what the other postings say. I think it's faulty design, because I'm a careful driver, passed the Advanced Test.
It was lucky, it was only a driveway wall I hit, but it could easily have been a child or old person.
PS I'm not American, but what has that to do with anything? My shoes are size 4. - avis

6)   The guy who ran me down and left me with a limp owned a garage. No qualification to assure anyone of anything, rest assured.
But to answer the question, yes, my neighbour described exactly that, and I didn't believe him until I went to look at it. It's true, and the smaller your feet the easier it is to get them stuck. It cost him his no claims bonus, and as another posting said, it could have been a fatality, not just an accident.

Volkswagen Jetta fuse box?...  I have a 2007 VW Jetta and the cigarette lighter does not work, I need it to charge my phone
I realize that its probably a blown fuse, problem is I dont know where the fuse box is located. can someone please advice me on where I would find the fuse box, how to open it and what fuse it might be thank you
I do not have an owners manual it did not come with one

1)   I love a bargain as much as anyone and I used to love all the cheap stuff I could find on eBay, but nowadays it seems so hard to find anything cheap over there and just when we're all finding it tougher to just pay our bills. 2)   Volkswagon cars do not have cigarette lighters or fuse boxes. 4)   open the drivers door and look at the end of the dash, if you are sitting in the drivers seat look at the end of the dash to the left of the steering wheel, there should be a latch and it should pop open, im not sure what fuse is the lighters, when you take the cover off the fuse box look on it and it may have a diagram if not pull the fuses one at a time and look for a blown one, make sure you pull them one at a time and put them in the exact spot u pulled them from. - tomis

Jetta VR6-Recalls? I just bought this car... Spark Plug/wires..O2 senser,CAT?...  I just bought a 2000 JettaVR-6 with a 150,000 miles. I think I have to changed the plugs and wires since im not sure if they have ever been replaced.I also have to put 2 new inner tie rods..gosh!! My buddy used the comp and it said I was having a few missfires on them so I guess I will need them replaced. It also said the cat was stopped up an prob needed replaced. I thought about straight pipping it instread of spending 400$. I wonder if it could be the coil pack cause my emmisions workshopand check engine lightscome on..I heard there is a recall on a few parts. Do I have to have a wrranty cause I don't guess I do and there is more than 80,000 miles. I don't know what to do. Also took it for a oil change and someone tightned the hreads to much so they couldn't do it I have to rethread it I guess. I just don't know what to do, will recalls still cover me.

1)   1. Take your VIN # to the VW Dealer maintenance desk and they will answer all your Recall questions. This is the Official way to do it. They are required by law to help you on this.

2. Oil Pan, Brace yourself for replacing the pan. The success of rethreading(oversize) are poor.

3.You have a computer to t/s the misfires DO IT, I think there are no spark plug wires on a 2000 VR6.
Change the plugs (Bosch Platinum are 14 bucks apiece) at your discretion. Pull and inspect them heck yeah get er done.
4. Coil packs get a lot of crap deservedly so. Change after verifying everything else, 90 bucks a pop

5. Plugged cat- fix first!!!! A good exhaust shop should be able to diagnose between bad cat and bad O2 sensors. This could root cause the other stuff or be a result of it. Check it out first as it is just best practice diagnostics.

6. You have no emissions warranty at 150,000 miles.

2)   Buy wires with a lifetime warranty, and be sure to use the extractor tool so you don't damage them when you disconnect the plugs. I used Bosch platinum plus4's in mine. For the cat, have your machanic perform an injection cleaning. You can pour alcohol into the tank to clean out the system and cat-conv. - oogabooga37

3)   You bought a car that was tossed around by punks and/or eurotrash poseurs for 150k miles. What did you expect?

The transmission is already gone you just don't know it yet.

4)   Wow, you should always perform a good pre-purchase inspection on any car you're thinking about buying especially at the milage you're at. Having said that, I do agree with sci for the most part; oil packs have a history of failure on these motors and 02 sensors, especially the heated ones are noted for getting slow to respond as the miles pile on...

On the oil pan, re-threading rarely if ever works, you can drill it oversize and possibly use an insert to hold the replacement drain plug (factory original) in place. In my experience this works about 50% of the time, largely dependent upon the skill of the tech drilling the oversized hole correctly... Another time honoured repair is to put the spring loaded permanent type lever drain plug in place, the drain plug hole is threadded as best as possible, then is threaded into the hole with j B weld and allowed to cure. This works reasonably well provided you can be without your car for at least eight hours while the bond cures to 100%. The drawback here is the spring loaded lever; if something like a road hazard hits it, you could loose all you engine oil real quickly... I've never seen it happen, but I've heard from reliable sources that it has. Finally, there's replacing the pan. If you do this, terrific, but always make sure that you always replace the drain plug washer at each oil change. The drain plug washer is a crush washer designed to reduce the tendency to over tighten the drain plug and thus, stripping the threads.

The coil pack recall is for 2001 to 2003 VW's with 1.8 turbo motors, W12, and 2.8 VR6 with 12 valve motors; I don't think your 2000 qualifies for this work. Also given the age of the vehicle, even if it does qualify, it probably been done by this time, given the age and milage of your vehicle. But, still, I'd have a dealership run the VIN to check and see what open recalls exist on your vehicle.

At the milage your at; 150,000, it would not be considered to be unusual that you would need inner tie rods, that's about the normal lifetime of such an item. My own personal vehicle needs tie rods, both inner and outer on one side, outer only on the other side.

If you gut the cat, you probably won't pass the smog test; the check engine light should come on after a short drive after gutting the cat. The vehicle depends upon a certain amount of back pressure and temperature for the various sensors, including the 02 sensors, to operate correctly. Have an independent VW specialist or a dealership run thru the programme with the VAG COM to check the operation of the 02 sensor and/or cat. You can purchase an aftermarket cat that should allow your vehicle to pass smog.

Sorry to say that sci is right, you have no emissions warranty left on the car at 150,000 miles. Also, purchase the wire removal tool as previously suggested by another writer as its too easy to damage the wires when installing or removing them from the vehicle.

1)   35 psi cold max pressure. do not overinflate. Leave 2 lbs. more in passenger's side to allow for curvature of road. Better mpg - yourinnervoice

2)   First answer is a pile of old pony.
Put you reg in this site to get the answer or have a good look for a sticker, probably on the drivers door frame, or in the handbook that came with the car.

2002 volkswagon Passat won't start fires briefly but won't start possibly fuel pum?...

1)   It is possibly the fuel filter.you can call your local parts store & they will tell you where it's
located & usualy whene the pump goes out it does not start at all when the filter is plugged
it wil get a liitle bit of gas but not enogh to keep it runing. - jesus gonzalez

3)   Try this, hold the ignition switch (key) over towards the crank position after the car fires; if it stays running untill you let go of the key, most likely you have a worn out ignition switch. On many cars, people have too many keys on the key ring which can wear out the lock and/or the ignition switch. Since you haven't said anything about any warning lights being on when the car is cranking over, I'll assume that the electronic key "deadbolt" is working properly. - a car nut
