Why does my Volkswagen engine sound like it's going to explode?

Question 1
Why does my Volkswagen engine sound like it's going to explode?...  I just got it so don't know anything about the history. It starts and runs if I carefully manage the throttle, but makes horrible bangs and pops and backfires. It has fresh gas. I figure it must be something either with the timing or the dual carburetors not being balanced. Are one of those ideas right?
The oil is full, just changed, but, yes, the exhaust is rusted off so one of the cliders is just going out into a short pipe about 8 inches long. Back pressure problems?

Answers
1)   May need oil, that would be my first guess. Also you may want to check your exhaust system as your engine may not be getting proper air flow. - Baseballer

2)   New set of plugs and wires - Rick

3)   well personally, all volkswagen engines sound like there going to explode. the german diesel engines some of them have sound funky to start with, but if i had to say what was wrong, it would be the timing - bigduallytrucks

4)   Sounds like a bucket of bolts. It needs fixing in all those areas(that is what owning a car is all about...spending money to keep it running. Probably goes like a slug too. You belong in Mexico.
Exhaust repaired first. Then the rest can be done. It needs more than gas and oil. Cops will pinch you and you will be off the road. - Doing the Math

5)   sounds like a misfire to me - Mike NYC

6)   because it's going to explode - Tony N

2)   most likely brazil. - Daniel Branstner

3)   Germany most likely. But the VIN number will tell you where was assembled - cant_think_of_1

4)   here in the uk a most of VW are made in Brazil . and have been made there for years , by rabbits i guess you mean the VW golf , we used to call them rabbits back in the 80's probably as you will always find a rabbit on a golf course < and you can also get a set of golf clubs in the hot hatch >
you will find the body shell is made in on continent maybe two , engines are made in a few plants , things like alternators/starters are bought in but most of the design work has been done in germany ,
when you mean made i guess you mean the jigsaw was completed . and this is done in a few different places depending on the closest MAN retail outlet(germany , mexico , and Brazil ) - inaal rabak

Question 3
VW Golf Temp Light turns on when starting car (in the cold)?...  So i got out of work tonight and started my car, after undigging it from the snow and my temp guage turned on. It turned off shortly after I started driving, but I am wondering if this is something I should be worried about, or if it is just really cold?
its a 2001 vw golf 5 spd

non diesel

Answers
1)   Is your car a diesel? If so, then the temp light may be coming on while the glow plugs heat up the engine a bit to allow the engine to catch once the starter cranks it. If this is the case, then as it gets colder then the temp light will come on more often and it will take longer to start your engine. - walanrusa

2)   Low coolant level. When cold add a quart of fluid.

ASE Cert Auto tech, sinc 1978, 2003 GLI - sci

3)   check your antifreeze level. - Daniel Branstner

4)   I'm with the ASE mechanic on this one. VW put coolant *level* Sensors on a lot of their models. When your vehicle is cold the coolant has a tendency to contract a bit, once it's warm it will expand. Should check the level when it's cold according to directions found in your owners manual.

If it is a diesel the light you're seeing may well be for the glow plugs, it will likely be orange in color and the "icon" may look like the filament in a light bulb. You should wait till the glow plug light goes out before starting and do NOT use starting fluid on any diesel equipped with glow plugs. Aside from some pretty nasty noises you can severely damage the engine. - Jim

Question 4
Volkswagen Jetta fuse box?...  I have a 2007 VW Jetta and the cigarette lighter does not work, I need it to charge my phone
I realize that its probably a blown fuse, problem is I dont know where the fuse box is located. can someone please advice me on where I would find the fuse box, how to open it and what fuse it might be thank you
I do not have an owners manual it did not come with one

Answers
1)   Volkswagon cars do not have cigarette lighters or fuse boxes. Your best bet would be to sell your current Volkswagon, gaining whatever pathetic amount of money you can get for a car with no cigarette lighter, and get this- https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8C3pMOErw2E3pw_d7Go7yO0h6BjcXuRYuwCjTlATFWHRIkKl2742xLRLhKspuekr9KaMeHWLQuzGFwf8CKNnXNz4recyPf4ZP-wFp5CAJrVSTm61MIgTyMIPFQp9azzMtArDS6lQNMAuA/s400/Peel+P50.jpg

The Peel P50 does not have a cigarette lighter, but it seems like the right kind of car for you. - casey

2)   my best advice is to buy a Hayne's manual for ur Jetta, it will have all the answers for present problems and future problems. - Jessica Kruse

3)   open the drivers door and look at the end of the dash, if you are sitting in the drivers seat look at the end of the dash to the left of the steering wheel, there should be a latch and it should pop open, im not sure what fuse is the lighters, when you take the cover off the fuse box look on it and it may have a diagram if not pull the fuses one at a time and look for a blown one, make sure you pull them one at a time and put them in the exact spot u pulled them from. - tomis

4)   its probably on the end of the dash on the drivers side. there should be a visible latch. - Daniel Branstner
