Question 2
My power steering has stopd working on my vw mk5 golf?...

Answers
1)   don't know about your specific car, but power steering involves a pump that is powered by a belt from the engine. So of course the engine has to be running; the belt has to be there, and not slipping; and the pump has to have sufficient fluid. There's a reservoir that needs to be filled with a specific kind of fluid, check your owner's manual for that info. It has a dipstick like when you check the oil, only this one is very short, just a few inches. Use a cloth or paper towel to check it by lifting it out of the fluid, wiping it off, put it back in and lock it closed, open it again and check where the fluid level on the dipstick is. I would like to be able to tell you whether the engine should be running or not for this check, but I honestly don't remember right this minute... I guess for safety's sake I'll recommend you try it with the engine off, but while it's warm, after running for a while (for engine oil they recommend ten minutes of stop and go driving to get the engine warm for that check, so this is probably the same).
If the steering is too hard to drive the car then of course don't do that. - Idahoser

2)   Dont worry too much or even panic.Thats the first thing to do so that you can be able to troubleshoot the problem. If there is power steering resevior tank has enough fluid, check whether the power steering drive belt is in place. If these two situations are okey you need a mechanic if not so and be within your ability fix it - Kamanu Gabriel

3)   This car has electric power steering. It's probably not something you can fix yourself. Better take it to a dealer :( I hope you still have a warranty. - Louis G

4)   The first thing to make the power steering to stop all at once, is the belt has likely broken or come off.
If the belt is good then check for leaks and the fluid level, low fluid will make it hard to turn and make noise. - Jack Winters

Question 3
VW Jetta -looking for transmission BOOK...where?...  Failing on searching for a Transmission Manual...well cuz google is so smart it thinks i'm looking for a manual transmission

I am attempting to take apart the Tranny of a 1998 Jetta GL 2L
but it won't come apart
i need a book to figure WTF

anyone know where I can find a book....CHILTON failed--it has 2 pages on the Tranny--SAD

Answers
1)   you can try this to see if this will help...
http://www.longenterprises.com/ - Mr. Dent

2)   Dealership manual. They sometimes come in volumes and are big. They are also expensive (around 120$) Books like chilton don't go very in depth with most things. But depending on what you are stuck on (trans housing removal or removing a gear or whatever) it may not help much. Manual transmissions can be hard to get apart sometimes since some of the interference fits are tight and gears are brittle. - A S

3)   Chiltons suck. You need a Bentley, for this and anything you do to your car. Here's one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0837603668/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0837612519&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0NYB95W0QYVNMRW2SDRT - Mark K

4)   The Bentley is really what you need. But what you really don't need to do is disassemble that transmission. o2o transmissions are a dime a dozen. Find someone on vwvortex parting out a mk3 with a 2.0 and snag working one for anywhere from $150-$200 - Nick

Question 4
I'm planning to buy a 2004 volkswagon jetta 1.8t. I just wanted to get feedbacks from others who've owned one?...

Answers
1)   My sister and I shared one and we LOVED it!! Ours was black and it was just fine in the snow and ice. I strongly encourage that you get one. I loved it and I hope you do too!!! - Kippy

2)   Transmissions are garbage. - Hank Scorpio

3)   I love the car, the only problem I have had with it is...the slight peeling of some of the interior pieces...and...the cupholder broke. But, since you're buying an 04 you will have a different cupholder than I do, so you won't run into the same problem.

Some people also reported their ECU's to go out, which is about a 1k fix...if you're buying a manual the clutch will last anywhere from 60k-120k miles, maybe longer if you drive it well. I have heard a few reports on the transmission going out...but..I replace my transmission fluid and oil religiously to keep everything working well and check for wear and tear and at 110k miles my transmission still works beautifully. The previous owner of my car shot the clutch, but I was able to drive 20k more miles on it.....It does really well in the snow, and if I drive like a grandpa I get around 32-36mpg with a manual.

All in all, I love the car, the other parts that did go out were covered under recalls and fixed for free. (seat warmers and ignition coils)

If you do buy it, and notice a chirping sound when it's running that's the timing belt getting old and letting you know it needs to be replaced.

So, yeah. I would say buy one. Take good care of it, and it will treat you well. - Mentat

4)   I have an 05 and it runs great. Just like Mentat said though, maintain it well. Once you get the jetta replace the timing belt and check all the hoses since the jetta's sensors like any other electronic thing will go bad if liquid like coolant or oil gets on them. They run great though. Im satisfied with mine, had some issues but due to maintenance issues that could have been prevented by me and the previous owner. Transmission is great if its a manual. If it's automatic check it instantly also because they get worn after 80k miles. VWs are better than any other japanese cars and are fun to drive. The maintenance costs are well worth it. - eck210

VW cabriolet 1989 us making a thumping noise...help any1...?...  I hear a thumping noise on driver side front end...not a clicking noise but thumps in a rotating manner as if the tire hada lump or a wobble...however uv taken it to shops and the tire seems fine...front axle wheel bearings was my next guess but was told that noise wouldbe more of a grinding or chattering noise???...any advise would be helpful u may text to 661-371-1344 Bakersfield,CA...

Answers
1)   sounds like a wheel bearing or could be the drive shaft. Take it to a shop, have them put it in the air and have them go about 20 mph with it on the lift. This would probably be the best way to tell where the noise is coming from. - Jeff

2)   Thumping is usually a bad strut mount, or a bushing holding the lower control arm.

If your Strut mounts are showing the top plate over 1/4 of an inch gap, they are bad.

Bad Mount new Mount.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/briano1234/strutmount/strut003.jpg - Briano

3)   Depends on when it thumps.
A wheel out of balance, bent or bulged will do it all the time at certain speeds.
A wheel bearing will grind, shake through the steering wheel and brake pedal.
A CV joint will sound like a sack of marbles in slow, tight turns.
A bad strut mount or track arm bushing will be only when you change position, such as hitting bumps or putting on the brakes.

Tell us more the speeds, consistency, if you feel anything as well as hearing, etc. - Motorhead
