The ABS light and traction control light have come upon the dash board of my golf?

I was driving along the other day and the traction control light and ABS light have came upon the dashboard, I know i should take it to a garage asap but most garages around here when they see a girl they bang £150 on the bill straight away.Im not driving it anywhere at the moment!! Any ideas ?

Go to Autozone. They should be able to tell you why those lights are on for free.
busta68

The lights come on when the car needs to be serviced for those areas. Look at the level of the brake fluid (under the hood - or bonnet) and if it is below where it should be, add fluid and that may make the lights go out. I would suggest getting a repair manual for you car so that you can troubleshoot things like this yourself, and if it needs to go to a garage, you will have the knowledge of what repairs are needed - and what repairs they are trying to get you to buy !!
not 2 B fooled

hmm it sounds like either it is a genuine problem with your ABS or if you had a flat battery or jumped started the car that may have caused it.

if this is the case take it to a guarage and tell them this is what happen and my dad or husband ask to reset the computer, and they should charge 30~40 pounds, good luck mate.
TuTor

if the lights are on means something is wrong but could be anything from faulty wire to something more serious so get it in the garage

get your dad, older brother or male friend to take it in i know what you saying cause my mum and sister dont like taking cars into garages cause thay know thay will get ripped off
Steven

Unless you are a competent auto electrician or know one then you will need a garage to sort this for you.
Be aware that until fixed you have no ABS or traction control so the car is a little more unsafe than it was.
You should also be aware that if you have an accident your insurers could opt not to pay out as the car is not in proper working order - they love excuses like that.
Timbo is here

could be a ABS sensor on one of the brake's or your brakes pads are getting low
arnie74

post a thread on www.vwaudiforum.co.uk

these guys will look after you

however this does sound like the ABS control module - NOT CHEAP
PHIL B

It`s most likely a wheel sensor.
The brakes will still work ok,but the ABS will be disabled, that means you will now skid if you have to make a emergency stop.

vw passat tdi 2001.window motor on drivers door not working.?

motor is working but there's a cracking noise..any similar problems? is any esay to get to it?

Asked by: Bruno M @ 2009-05-14 11:49:56

Answers ::
It is 6 screws that you have to remove around the door. You take off the actual door panel and the motor is just inside. Becareful as that may be a sound of the window regulator cable starting to split. If that is the case the window can fall and shatter in your door. The best thing to do would be to take the door panel off and check the regulator (which is 2 cables connected between two steel frames) and the motor which is a silver box connected to the regulator. If the regulator is ok its time to replace the motor which runs in the ballpark of 200-300 dollars. Best bet - call a junk yard for the parts. hope that helps
Gail

The other thing it could be is the clips that are attached to the window. I have had the front clips go on two different cars, a 2001 and a 2002. Apparently it is a frequent thing. The clips are not that expensive and VW only charged me $70 to replace them the last time.
WayR

VW junk. Bring it to the dealer along with a fistfull of credit cards.
p3200tmz

The motor works. Stop. the cracking is the gear slipping on the cable. Nothing you can do except replace the cable. However I think the cable and motor are housed together so that means the assembly will come as a unit. But your eyes work the best on that. I have only had the manually operated ones.
For all the trouble, let them do it. It is much easier while you go have a coffee. An autobody shop can do it or any garage with a mechanic.
But give it to VW. for all the difference.(not much) that it is going to make. They may charge more but they are faster so in the end, no difference.
Best answer usually the simplest

there was a recall out for this...check to see that it was performed.
gromit_111

Yes I agree with gromit.
Call your VW dealer 1st and it may be replaced as an extended warranty item.
I had a 2000 GTI with same problem. Even though the "official warranty "was expired VW repaced it for free!

Should I buy a second hand 2 litre Volkswagen EOS?

I would have to take a decent sized loan and probably not be able to pay money into my savings for a while, but it's a cool convertible! Plus will it cost a fortune to put petrol in a two litre?

Asked by: miltongloaming @ 2009-05-13 13:34:45

Answers ::
The only reason not to is that it is a first model year for that car and you they usually have some issues. Wait a bit for the next model year. Those 2.0 litre engines get good gas mileage and it is a fairly light car for a convertible. Other than that they are great cars and I love the hard top. If I had the spare cash I would buy it!

suprising, it was like an impossibility becoming a reality, i got a loan of
$75,000 USD even with my bad credit within 48 hours and my sons surgery was done
and thank GOD it was successful and now, i am okay and living in comfort with my
kids and i said to my self, i have never ever seen this kind of wonder in life
and i decided i will tell it to the whole wild world and i need every one to
thank GOD for Mr Patrick Harvey, the man GOD used to rescue me and my family
even when all hope had been lost and gone and i will say to every one, no matter

Ya if you want to spend a ton of money on repairs.

VW is poorly engineered and expensive to fix. Ask any mechanic.

Example: An alternator on a VR6 VW is at least $400 labor alone. On an typical American or Japanese car, the labor to change an alternator is around $40.

Gearbox oil change on vw polo?

I need to change gear oil in my 1998 vw polo. there is 3 plugs on gear box. 1 has a allen key opening. What is the 1 I need to drain and re-fill it?

Asked by: claire @ 2009-05-14 22:46:56

gear box as in transmission?

im not familiar with VWs but, if you need to drain fluid, and theres only 3 plugs, and not a pan (CHECK IF THERE IS A PAN FIRST! AHH!) take the lower one out to drain it. once its drained, screw that one back in. then take out the top one, and fill it up till it pours out. replace plug, and check the TRANS dipstick.

DO THIS WITH VEHICLE ON LEVEL SURFACE
Mike L

if there's one underneath the gearbox then use that one.
arnie74

you have one in 3 chance of finding out. why not RTFM and know which one or head to the library and find out.
gromit_111

If there is one at the very bottom then that should be the drain plug - if it has one as not all do.
Timbo is here

Gearbox? Manual transmission? I have "never" changed the oil in a manual and have taken them 300Kmiles without a whimper. Nothing happens inside there. Gears rotate, That is all they do. VW said it was not a concern unless it was leaking and then just make sure that it was always up to the level. The one on the bottom is the drain which figures, right? As it is the lowest point. There should be one on the side about half way up which is another allen(that is what I would first look for) or possible a square plug if the allen is not there. It is filled in from the side until the oil comes out of the filler hole. You are using 90W gear oil if it is manual.(in the older ones) Maybe they have gone to a lighter weight now, I cannot say. But it is gear oil, not motor oil. Do use the correct stuff.
If it is an automatic transmission....the bottom plug is the drain plug. The filler is down the dipstick tube....using a transmission funnel. and check the dipstick to see when you are at the correct level.

I guess the car must have overheated at certain time, and unfortunately the head gasket is buggered go and have it replaced before you cause any further damage. good luck mate.
TuTor

check your gas-kit.
nana

the head gasket has gone
arnie74

it means you have to replace head gasket, and while doing that do the valve cover gasket also.
JOHNNY C

Engine is probably junk. There's a reason when you drive your "Golf 3" you never see any others on the road.

with regards to the vintage VW beetle, which is better for city driving,1600cc or 1200cc?

you did not say what year car although they all bolt up you may have different electric (6 or 12 volt) the power &relaibity of the 1600 is much better. the 1200 only had 40 hp
chuck d

The 1200 went out of production in july 65. Parts may be a consideration. I prefer the 1600 just for that reason. You don't have to wait 2 weeks for a part.

You can always run a 1600 at 1/2 throttle it's tougher to get throttle and a half out of a 1200.
williamM

Personally, get a 1300(1963). That was more of a bullet proof engine and pots on it are swappable if you wanted to go to say increase engine size to a 1500cc engine size, different carbs and ignition systems and heads are available for it. A more versatile engine and fits more transaxles.
The 1200 is stuck at 1200 - it could not be upped to a 1300. And it mated to the 12oo transaxle.
Fuel consumption wise -because you did not state in what way are they better....you can make any engine gulp down fuel by the way you drive. Being a lead foot will make any engine a pig. Drive more like a granny. You know you are not going to win any drag races (so why even bother to try?) and you can increase the mpg 10-15mpg more. Learn to do the mathematics on every fill up on how to figure it out and you can see the difference. Stock 1600 was rated by the factory at 25mpg. After doing some minor modifications to it, I increased that to 35mpg. (But I always tinker.) Carburated ones you can do carb mods, While 35 sounds great, consider that the 1600cc is 100cubic inches, and my 327 cu.in Chev Impala V8 gets 32....(or 3 x's the engine side and the same fuel consumption)
The 1300 probably uses the same.

It is like the car manufacturer is working hand in hand with what the oil companies want (we have heard that before) cars to consume. Oil companies have fuel to sell, and if your car uses less and less of it, the oil companies have fuel that they cannot sell. What are they suppose to do with it?
Introduction of Fuel Injection keeps many tinkerers at bay as the computer dictates how much fuel the car is to use. notice the word "dictate". Now the only way to use less fuel is not to drive at all.

But for city driving....if you are in a high theft rate town, go with the 1200(No body wants it),
The 1300-1600 all feel about the same.
Best answer usually the simplest

The 1600 matched with better clutch and gearing is a far better choice to keep-up with impatient city drivers. It's like the difference between a big school bus climbing grades on the highway and the same bus gaining speed on a down-slope.The two are completely different in form and action. You will be much more relaxed with the more modern drivetrain that motivates you with traffic flow, and not against it.
racer123

Neither. Old junk.

1972 was a piece of junk. Stalled all the time in the middle of intersections. From new. Definitely a sick puppy. It might have been the first dual carb set up, I can't remember. Was greatly improved in 74. F.I. in 77. Still a pig on gas.
I would rather dream about gurls.

I'm partial to splittys myself. My husband found a 61 Bus in a junk yard this past winter. It was painted with all kinds of Bible school stuff. He spent weeks just removing that. Now it's in the garage waiting to be finished. We also have a 62 Crewcab.
You should hook up with a VW club in your area so you'll know where to look for one. Or try The Samba.
