VW Passat CC GT 2.0Ltr 140Hp. Good car?

Question 1
VW Passat CC GT 2.0Ltr 140Hp. Good car?...  We ordered it a few weeks back and i'm just wondering what we should be expecting:D
We got
VW Passat CC (GT Model)
2Litre 140Horsepower
Deep Black Pearl Effect Paint
Brand new (Being built in a factory right now!:D)
Ipod Cable.
The car comes with Park Sensores (Front & Rear)
RNS 310 satalite navigation system
heated front seats
Rear Tinted windows
Floor mats
etc, all that kind of stuff
SO, what do you guys think of the car?:D
thanks for reading:D
Of course I test drove it:D lol
I meant like everyday life with the car:D

Answers
1)   yes of course it is. - ec123456789able

2)   Sounds pretty sweet! My first car was a VW and they are very reliable and will run forever if you take care of it. Maybe we should auction one of those on our site www.dealdash.com!

Enjoy it! I'd say you picked a winner! - Dave Dealdash

3)   I would hope you know what you're expecting. You did test drive it before you bought it didn't you?

It's based on the old model Passat so I hope you got a good discount and I doubt it'll have much in the way of performance with only 140bhp given the weight of the thing, but again, if you drove it you'll know what to expect. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

4)   I drive an 06 plate Passat and its been very good, extremely comfortable and great for both long and short journeys. The only things to watch for are faulty injectors on the 2.0 ltr diesels across the whole VW/Audi range, in worst cases this presents itself as a sudden loss of power or the feeling of a misfire. Also, oil leaks on the inter-cooler. On the 2006/07 cars the alloy wheels are starting to corrode under the lacquer - look for `whitish' trails under the paint - will cost about £100 per wheel to re-finish. As far as I know 2.0 ltr petrol engines are no particular trouble as long as they are well maintained. The CC is a great looking car and if secondhand, as long as you have full service history should be good for at least 150,000 miles. If its brand new then I envy you because I want one - Huge

5)   If you ain't looking for a Sedan that kind of similar to Bugatti C-16 "Galibier" Concept, Its name is a historical reference to the Bugatti Type 57 Galibier.

Well... à mon avais, this big Comfort VW sedan would be a good option for city dwellers just like the Aston Martin Cygnet, a very small car that tailor fit for fast changes city environment and not compromising luxury.

8)   So, you are basically bragging, right? What do I think? Is it worth stealing? Only for a customer who wants it, because I don't. - Do the Math

9)   An excellent choice - any knocker is biased - in the words of one magazines car tester, you are getting a very well sorted car for your money. I am sure you have spent your money wisely and will be perfectly happy with your choice.

PS Though i have driven one a fair bit my own car is a BMW530D so i have no axe to grind one way or the other. - COLIN T

Question 2
are old vw bugs safe?...  are 1967 volkswagen bugs safe?

Answers
1)   No. There's a video on YouTube of an old VW Beetle doing a head on crash test. I'm at work so I can't post the link but you'll find it. I like old VW Bugs, and would like to have one as a fun car, but I would never let my kids drive it. - Robert

2)   LOL, why wouldn't it be, other than a head on, if it is in good mechanical shape? I was laughing because there is an old story I heard about VW's and the back seat. The battery should be underneath it, you might want to put some type of rubber over the terminals to prevent them from touching the seat when bouncing on it. I have heard they catch fire, and driving over bump is not the only way I have heard this happen. LOL. - TeQuest

3)   They can be made safe.
Install a roll cage along with 5 point seat belts.
A Chenowth class 11 style cage will cost about $200 and is easy enough to install if you have a welder or a friend who welds.

As far as today's standards, they do not have air bags and do not do well in front end collisions, but most old cars don't hold up to today's standards.

I drive a 1973 VW Thing daily and it seems safe enough to me. I did build a roll cage for it and it does have 5 point seat belts in all 4 seats.

I have owned many old bugs and have loved them all. I have never been in an accident in a bug, but I have rolled a vw based buggy and it held up just fine. My wife and I walked away without a scratch. - Rod Knocker

4)   Not really. There was really very little, if any, safety innovation back in the 60's when it came to cars. Its not only the Beetles. Most cars from that era follow suit. - Car freak

5)   bree, every one is giving u there opinion,

i personally know they have been semi-

prof raced on road & drag strip tracks,

so they r safe enuff for that, btw the battery

on bug/beetle is under seat but is safe enuff,

check w/ scca 4 racing safety specs - v

6)   Safer than Japanese models(which have only a bunch of "spot welds". A 67 still utilized full length welds. That is why they don't blow apart like their competition. They used thicker steel. and many bolts.

Airbags aside - are you "planning to drive your car headlong into a brick wall???

I don't plan on it nor to I am to try for it. Was not born with "pea gravel" for brains.

You want to do that - buy a tank.(I mean a real tank, or a bulldozer)

If they have seatbelts - use them. (Notice; even with air bags we still must wear seat belts so they help the most)

If anybody watches TV, it is American cars that get stolen in the cop shows and it is the American cars that catch fire and explode when in a collision.

Never seen a bug do that. They may roll over and onto their wheels again but that is about it.

Anybody who says they are dangerous has no idea. A full tank of gas will not explode. - Do the Math

How do Volkswagen Jettas perform in the snow?...  I'm looking to get a new car and i looooove Jettas but i've heard that theyre bad in the snow. Is this true?

Answers
1)   Hey bro u lookin kinda fat but yeah volkswagen Jettas work well in the summer. - Stop Calling me fat

2)   well first of im happy to someone likes a car that actually is good. my friend has a 92 jetta front wheel drive and as long as it has snow tires its alright. and were in wisconsin so WE DO GET SNOW...i heard the 4 motion is at the top of the 4 wheel drive competition so if your looking for a jetta for snow...get a 4 motion - Josh S

3)   I assume you are talking about buying a used older one...

I had a 1996 Jetta two years ago and it was great in the snow. It's a pretty light car so make sure you have some all-seasons with plenty of tread or a set of winter tires.

Last winter I drove a 2008 with no problems either, it's much heavier which makes it way better than the 1996 was.

This year I have a 1997 Jetta with the vr6. Winter is gonna be a blast. - Nick

4)   It all depends on "how you drive" and "the tires you got on the car". In the snow, the most performance you want is getting from point A to point B without landing in the ditch. Right?
I had an early one and I got some slightly used snow tires for it. It was just terrible. I feared rises or slight grades in the snow covered road. Then I bought some new winters the next year. (No particular brand-for me cheap is a good brand) and did not have a problem going up or down any hill. Almost like a snowmobile. The engine weight is over-top of the driving wheels. How can that not be good? - Do the Math

5)   I have an MKIV Jetta, this is the one known for haveing a high ride height, I got stuck in the snow that we had in the Northeast last year, I had a MKIII that never got stuck but the time that I owned it, we didn't get snow that high. It drove well in the snow, it was a stick also. If your car is a stick, just shift frequently... - MarcoVande

Question 4
Why do we tag people when we see a Volkswagen Bug?...  We see one and tag somebody and shout "BLUE ONE!" or "GREEN ONE"! Why do we do it? Is it because those cars look so different and rather funny?

Answers
1)   That's actually exactly why.
I still do it now if I'm with a friend and I see a silver Volkswagon I yell "Punch buggy silver" and punch them.
Honestly I have no idea why we do it it's a game that has been around for awhile now so we just tell the next generation and pass it on. That's how I figured out about it when I was a kid my uncle taught it to me.
It's always fun though after punching your friend watching your friend looking everywhere for another Volkswagon bug to get you back with! - Joey

2)   Slug bug, which is what we called it back in the day, started in the early sixties when VW bugs were an unusual sight. Most of the time it was between siblings stuck in the back seat on long car trips. For my brother and I the primary goal was to drive the rents insane (it worked really well...."don't make me stop this car") - rk

3)   We dont in UK we just call it a bag of crap ! - L G

4)   Its actually both different & funny looking thing. - A U M

5)   You tag them? I just wave. And they wave back. VW got the name "Beetle or Bug" when they first entered the country. This was meant as a put down term or derogatory term for German made car; as it was just after the war and it was English longshoremen who gave the car its "nick name".
That was a nickname that stuck as endearing to the owners that had bought them. They were always recognized as "Type 1" by the factory and the registration. The term "Beetle" did not officially surface until the 1973 SuperBeetle(the one with the curved windshield and struts) along side the production of the regular "Type 1" 2 dr sedan.
The English were confident they had the North American market with their imported cars. Their MGB's, Triumphs, Vauxalls, Austin, Morris, Morris Minor, Standard, Ford Prefect, Jaguar, Sunbeam, Rileys, Ford Zephyr, Hillman and Rolls Royce; plus the French had Renault, Citroen and Peugeots,Italy -Fiat. I know I have missed a few.
Maybe that was due to the fact they spent every second day in the mechanical repair shop.
Mechanics have families to feed too.

Victoria, BC in Canada was very British orientated. My dad bought the first VW (Type1) from the first VW dealership on the West Coast. mixing antifreeze, adding green to pink?...  adding green antifreeze to pink antifreeze in a car

Answers
1)   No you can't do it and have good results.

Never the twain should mix.

Pink with pink,
Green with Green. - Briano

2)   I have often pondered this point and do not see that it can make any difference. You already have one type mixed with water and if you add another type with water, even if they do not mix, surely they still work as they are both antifreeze. I do not know but that is my thoughts. - navi

3)   The archaic, green coolant contains sulfates that react negatively with aluminum and plastics and neoprene (that's your engine gaskets). Don't mix them. However, you can use the Prestone extended life, all makes-all modes. It is a light green and is compatible with your pink stuff. - straight shooter

4)   Only use the G11, G12, or G13 depending on what it says on the tank. Volkswagens are very very picky about what you feed them. Unless you like replacing heater cores, I suggest spending the couple extra dollars now.

Put premium fuel in too. - Nick

One downside is that you can't delete your account once you sign up, so your information will be on the web forever. Question 3
My VW polo timing belt snapped - I was doing 70mph. Is it worth getting the initial work done ($300)?...  It's a 1996 vw polo. When the belt went, the oil light came on and it just came to a stop. I didn't hear any clanking or nasty sounds. (The car just wouldn't start) Could there be internal damage? Help!

Answers
1)   You could have bent your valves and damaged your pistons. Those kind of engine are referred to as interference engines, meaning the valves will occupy the same space at one time, that the piston does another time. And when the timing belt gives, the entire valve train becomes immobile when it's supposed to move with the crankshaft and it's components. In a cylinder or two, a piston could have come in contact with a valve and possibly bent it, meaning you will definitely need new valves, possible head rebuild, and, if the impact was severe enough, you might have even punched a hole in a piston or two, meaning almost an entire teardown and rebuild is in order. Not trying to discourage you, but that is the worst case secnario. Won't really know what you need done till that head comes off. - The-Razors-Edge

2)   An immediate inspection is mandatory! First the valve cover and observation by rotation.then the cylinder head and observation by rotation. - tvl

3)   I really doubt that it is worth the repair cost unless you have a mechanic who will do the job on the cheap. You need the head skimming, a new belt kit, possibly several new valves and that is before you consider damage to a piston(s). Far better putting the £500 repair bill into another car. This time ensure you have proof of when the cam belt was changed :+) Good luck. - L G

4)   You might've been alright if you didn't try restarting the car.

There's no way a snapped belt will only be $300 to fix. - Richard R

Answers
1)   if its standard, you dont need to. If its automatic, look in your manual and it should say where its located under the hood. if you cant figure it out take it to a mechanic - Jessica L

2)   The 1.8T uses a sealed tiptronic transmission. No way to check the level. According to VW there is no need to check the fluid level unless you have a leak. If the transmission fluid is replaced as outlined in your service manual, that's all that needs to be done. - pbleek

3)   there is no way to check as it is in a sealed unit, the oil must be changed every 40k miles usualy you have to go to a main dealer as some special tools are needed.it costs approx 250 euro. unless there is a leak it will remain as full as when it was refilled, - Christy Smith

Is it possible to install a front license plate on a 2005 jetta?...  I live in a state that requires a front and a back license plate and i have a 2005 jetta that only has a back license plate holder... is there any thing/ any way that i can have a front license plate holder installed (easily and cheap????)

p.s. on this car there is nothing like holes or ANYTHING for a license plate.. just a normal front bumper! PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Answers
1)   No, your car will be the only one on the road without a licencse plate. Volkswagen did this on purpose because they want to make sure that if you bought one of their cars, it would be impossible to drive. - Matt

2)   Hi,
First thing to do is go to Pep Boys and AutoZone ask for a Kit to do that with.
I haven't done that myself, without ever doing I'm confident that is the answer.
I've probably seen them there before.

This is a Kit, I'm not talking about one of the cheap plastic crome looking frames. - AnswerRack.com

3)   In most states with a 2 license plate law it's legal to run a single plate as long as the car wasn't drilled for a front plate. I live in Nevada (2 plates) and it's not a problem; been running 1 plate for about 2 years. Worst case scenario just strap it to the passenger's side visor on the outside; I'm not sure how effective it is but I've seen several people do it. - Hank Scorpio

4)   If you buy the License Screws that are available at Pep Boys, Auto Zone or any auto parts store, all you need to do is mark the holes with a Marker and screw them in. The screws are like wood screws, and the plastic bumper will hold them just fine.
I saw this also: Use your Computer, Buy a piece of sticky back photo paper, and make a Miniature copy of the plate, large enough to show the letters/numbers and just stick it on the front.
Saw this on a Corvette.....Looks very good!!! - Lincoln Lover

5)   Your car came with a license plate bracket but someone did not install it. Just go to your local dealer and buy the bracket it rivets onto the bumper. It doesn't cost very much. - Luis

Question 2
If you had a choice between a 2007 VW GLI, 2010 or 2011 VW regular Jetta?...  The GLI has 30000 miles on it.

Which would you pick and why?
OH and the 2010 or 2011 Jetta would be brand new. 0 miles

Answers
1)   i'd go with the '07 because the insurance costs would me MUCH cheaper, as well as the payments. 30k isn't a lot of mileage at all, that car has a lot of life left in it(for a newer Volkswagen, at least). - Richard Ramirez

2)   An r32. That wasn't on your list? It is now. - Hank Scorpio

3)   A 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. - Richard R

4)   Scoop up the GLI. 30k miles is nothing, just broken in. Insurance will be close to the same for all those cars (They have the same engine options, none of which are very powerful, and have the same safety equipment). The GLI will have a sportier look than the other 2 and will handle slightly better because it is a GLI. - Nick

5)   Depends on what you are looking for.
I sell VW's, so let me see if I can quickly sort the differences out: I'm talking about U.S. Specification Jettas, so if you are not in the US, the information may not apply.

A GLI has a 200 hp 2.0 L turbo charged engine. (and for a young driver it would cost more to insure, b.c it's turbo-charged). And it has an upgraded suspension, larger brakes, and is more sporty than the other two you list. Faster, and very nicely equipped. But- find out why the person is selling it first- b/c 30,000 miles on a 4 year old car is HIGHLY unusual and may indicate that the car wasn't driven for a while. (did they have problems with it, or maybe it was wrecked?)

A 2011 Jetta has become larger and more of a family sedan than it was in 2010.
It's lost some features that I like.
2011 vs 2010 Jetta changes:
The adjustable front armrest is gone and is replaced with a fixed armrest. Ok for some, but not for others.
The rear suspension is better on the 2010's than the 2011's. A fixed rear axle has replaced the independent rear suspension of the 2006-2010 models.
The electronics are better in the 2011. The bluetooth phone system is easier to use on the 2011.

The 2011 is less expensive than the 2010 when you compare model to model.

I'd have to agree that the best model Jetta to get would be one you have not listed: the Jetta TDI. 42+mpg (U.S), 3 years / 36,000 miles of free maintenance, you can't beat it. - J....

Question 4
2000 Jetta clutch won't go into gear? HELP!?...  I was driving my 2000 Jetta and all of a sudden, when I put my foot on the clutch I felt more heavy vibrations. It was harder to put the stick shift into gears then about 20 seconds later, it wouldn't go into gear at all. I pulled the car over to the side and turned the hazards on and when the tow truck came four hours later, the battery completely died as well. Has anybody ever had this problem before or know of a cheap way to find out the diagnostics? I am a college student and am barely surviving so money is definitely an issue. If you have any information about what might have happened and what I can do, I would be so grateful. Thank you so much!

Answers
1)   It seems to me you will need a new clutch, but go on face book or ask around to see if someone can repair it for you and buy the part online for about $60 and have someone put it in for about $150 to $200. If you take it to a shop it will cost you roughly $500 to $700. - Tim

2)   Is your clutch hydraulic operated? if so, you should check your clutch hydrualic
master cylinder reservoir and if it requires fluid you will need to fill with clean brake
fluid from a sealed container (brake fluid draws moisture). - Pat

3)   ouch... It sounds like either your linkage to your clutch is broken, or your clutch is gone. In a simi you could float the gears, but you sound stranded. Hope for the first, the broken or disconnected linkage. Actually as Pat mentioned, hope it is hydraulic and a change of fluid works. Hydraulic is another type of linkage. - TeQuest

Question 5
volkswagen golf mods?...  what kind of mods can I do to my golf? It's a 2004 golf, so it's an mk5. Nothing too crazy ie. vertical doors sort of stuff. Something moderately inexpensive.

any suggestions?

Answers
1)   Intake, Headers, High Flow Catalytic Converter, Cat-Back Exhaust, Chip the ECU, you can do anyhthing depending on how much money you have to spend - Chris

2)   Go to VW Vortex.com and take a peek.

Vertical doors aren't cheap, but if they fit in your budget, have fun. - J....

3)   Performance wise and cat-back exhaust and a cold air intake would give you a nice boost.

Other: Possibly a bit bigger wheels, true HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights, tinted windows and tail lights. (if legal in your state)

This would make it look a lot nicer, give you quite a bit more power, and it would be a lot more enjoyable to drive. With HIDs at night, the tint for people shining into your mirrors and keeping it a lot cooler inside in the summer. - yahoo

What should I expect to pay for a new clutch and gearbox in a vw touran? And to fit it?

Question 1
What should I expect to pay for a new clutch and gearbox in a vw touran? And to fit it?...  I am about to give the dealer the go ahead to order and fit a new gear box and clutch but feel I need to check out the cost first. It is a lot of money. Any advise etc. welcome. Thanks
It is a 2L deisel with gear box bearings scortched, flywheel is all broken up - that's how I knew something was wrong, it was making a knocking noise.
Car is 5 1/2 years old and I was given a quote from the vw dealer of £3,000. A bit shocked at the quote hence asking the question here. I will get a break down of the costs of parts and labour I think but this includes all work done so far in stripping it down to find out what the problem was.
What and who are the gear box specialist please?

Answers
1)   You don't mention what engine it has, which will turn out to be quite important. If it's the 1.6/2.0 petrol I'd expect a decent garage to charge somewhere around the £300 mark, maybe double if you go to a VW dealer. (Don't)

If it's a Diesel you're about to discover one of the major drawbacks of these things. If the dual mass flywheel needs replacing (which it probably will) then you're looking at £700-£800 at a garage, again double at a VW dealer. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

2)   Evelyn is quoting new clutch prices. If you are going to add in a gearbox as well then a reconditioned one will be around £900.00 plus clutch costs. If you are going for a new VW gearbox it will be a lot more. Ask the dealer- it may be that the costs exceed the value of the car. - Timothy L

3)   Why would it need a new gearbox? Clutch, and resurface of the flywheel, I can understand. - djaca70

4)   You should not give the dealer the go ahead without them giving you the cost ! You do not state the age of the vehicle, I assume it is outside the warranty ? This is likely to cost you at least £3,000 have you not tried some of the independent gearbox specialists ? - L G

Vento VR6 engine swap?

Question 1
Vento VR6 engine swap?...  Hi,

I currently own a 1.8 4 cylinder VW Vento (MK3 Jetta) with a standard engine. I want to swap the engine out for a 2.8 VR6 engine. so my question is, how well does the VR6 engine match up to the standard gearbox and engine mounts? (It is a project car, I will swap the standard gearbox for a stronger one when i get the money to stop damage!) anyone had any experience / issues when swapping a vr6? would i have to make any modifications? thanks for any help!
Hi, Thanks for the responses, I was going to put a stronger uprated VR6 gearbox on it anyway, but I can only really afford one thing at the time...

I just wanted to know if it would sit with the standard gearbox till i change the box. as its a project car i wont drive it till i get everything modified (brakes, suspension e.t.c.) do you know if the drive shafts will fit as well in teh chassis? thanks

Answers
1)   Forget using the standard gearbox for a start.
The only sensible way to do this is to buy a written off VR6 so you have access to the ecu, loom, mounts, gearbox, brakes, etc. - you'll need a stack of parts to make the engine fit & buying them individually will be very expensive. Probably cheaper & easier all round to buy a complete car in the first place and sell yours. - J G

2)   You clearly like a challenge ? I am pretty sure that a VR6 will not marry up to your original gearbox. The clutch inside will not be strong enough. You need stronger springs and shocks as well as an uprated anti roll bar and larger brakes. Fitting larger brakes is not that simple as your factory fit wheels may be too small to accommodate the brakes. However, many people have done this kind of mod. I did many many upgrades to a Mark 2 GTi I had years ago, it became a kind of obsession, when I came to sell it I counted up the money spent which was £2,700 + on a car I had paid £5,250 for ! In the cold light of day it did not make any sense as I got back £1500 and a banger which I sold for £550. I think the moral of the story is save yourself a lot of work and get the car you want instead ! - L G

3)   You'll need the whole drivetrain from the VR6 including the gearbox and driveshafts. The bigger brakes would be a good idea too. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

is the volkswagen type1 beetle run on diesel engine?...

1)   If you mean does the first beetles run on diesel fuel its a NO. They were a petrol engine. Later Volkswagen cars had diesel engine as an option. - DrkLce

2)   or if you mean its dieseling where its running on and takes a while before it turns off? your timing is out. - gooseboy78

3)   no all aircooled vw's were petrol engines. they did experiment with a diesel engine in the early or mid 50's but it was too loud and under powered so they didnt continue with it.

if its running on when you turn the key off check your fuel shut-off solenoid on the side of the carb. have a friend turn the key to the run position while you stand back at the carb. you should be able to hear a small 'click' noise. have your friend turn the key on and off 5 times. you should hear the click 5 out of 5 times. if it doesnt click check for power to it which comes directly from the ignition coil and is also jumped to the electromagnetic choke heat element - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

Are Volkswagen's good running cars?...  Hi, I recently been looking around for a first car. I happen to see a lot of VW Golf/Rabbit/GTI driving around. I'm wondering if a VW is a good choice of car. I hear from some people that they're great running cars and some say after a certain mileage they begin to have "Problems". So, I want to know if someone can give me more detail on these cars.

Answers
1)   They are nice cars... for a while, but are notorious for poor quality. I've never ridden in a VW that had any significant amount of mileage on it that didn't feel like a rat trap (loose, falling apart). - Rizzo The Cleaner

2)   As long as all proper maintenance is done on the car, it will run like a champ.

But, I will tell you that they are known for electrical issues further on in their life with 100K+ mileage.
I know people that are well over 100k and they kept up with proper maintenance, and the cars run great.

I would recommend them, they are nice cars. I own a 2007 VW Jetta with 45K miles, and it has been running great, no complaints. - russian4life2059

3)   You talking about cars in the USA and built in Mexico and Brazil. If you can avoid buying those and get a German import you will have very little trouble, as stated though, you must maintain them properly. - L G

Vw bora 1.6 16v small timing belt teeth is brokn while iwas driving and the man timing belt is fine why&how' ?...

Answers
1)   The Bora uses two belts: A main one driving one camshaft from the crankshaft, and another small one between the two camshafts. Either can break or strip teeth if maintenance intervals are ignored, it's most likely that your belts haven't been checked at the required intervals (they should be checked every 20,000 miles, but don't specify a replacement interval).
If the car's done over 60,000 miles without replacement & the belts haven't been inspected, your engine's been living on borrowed time. - J G

2)   Too old, materials have deteriorated with time and use. - Timbo is here

3)   The small belt has suffered greater fatigue and failed. If you did not buy the car new then it is possible only one belt has been changed instead of both during maintenance. - L G

Question 5
Will a body kit for a 2008 VW GTI fit a 2008 VW R32?...  I figure it will since the R32 is just an upgraded version of the GTI, all on the same Golf platform, but I wanted to know for sure before I bought a kit.

Answers
1)   Probably - but you might have to do some on-the-fly fit and finish (same for any kit), and nothing looks worse than a poorly fitting body kit. - River Euphrates

2)   it should do because its the same year and the same body shell - Alex Bufton

3)   It should since the body and the bolt on points for both are the same. - Car freak

Question 2
Is a 1999 VW Passat a good buy?...  I had a look at this VW Passat. Its pretty clean and drives great. It has about 109,000 miles on it. I am looking for something that would last me for like 4 years at least without any hassle. I do go for very long drives (FL to NY). Can anyone tell me what they think about this and their experience with a VW Passat if any http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/ctd/2011865415.html.

Answers
1)   Looks like a great deal!

Buy it! Go VW! - Adolph Hitler

2)   Yes go bay that _ 109.00 its nothig for Vw, and its vhill last like 10years more. Vw after 1998 give 18 years warranty on body for corrosion.
Congratulation - Goran

3)   The most important thing is service history. In particular you want to check that the engine oil has been regularly changed. If it has then 109,000 is pretty low for a VW and it should last you at least 4 years.

Good luck! - Alex

4)   You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com - Clay

5)   I researched on www.whatcar.com , its a British motoring website.
According to it, the VW Passat's most common problems are faults with the suspension and the axles. Gearbox failures are common faults and costly to fix.
I would purchase a newer car, probably the present VW Passat to be on the safe side.

However if you still intent to purchase it, make sure you do not hear any strange noises in the suspension or gearbox during the test drive!
Good luck :) - XF-AMG

6)   Dont buy it. You will have electrical problems, the car is to old. - Luis

Question 3
coolant keeps running dry in 06 VW Passat?...  I just bought this car June 30th and it drove like a dream. The warranty was up Sept 30th. On Sept 29th I took it into the shop because my coolant low light came on. I checked the coolant and it was almost bone dry. (It immediatly was dropped off at the dealer) There is no sign of coolant anywhere and the dealer did an oil change and nothing was in the oil. So they refilled the coolant with no explanation as to why it was empty. (Took it to VW for issue, bought at a different dealership), Where is the coolant going...it is empty again and it has been less than a month since it was filled and only about 750 miles driven.
Also, is this going to be a pricey fix?

Answers
1)   The favourite place for coolant loss is the radiator. I have just replaced mine on a 2005 model Golf. If you look inside the engine bay from the front of the car take a look at the visible section of radiator in front of where your left leg will be. I have had two VW cars with leaks in that area.If it is the radiator then a replacement is about £70(spurious make) and then you have the cost of coolant and any labour if you are unable to do the work yourself. - L G

2)   Cheek the water pump its inside the timing belt cover, and if the water pump its leak antifreeze going down to the cower and sometimes water pump its leaking only when the engine its ruining, so cheek also with engine ON.
And do you have antifreeze or water in the coolant? Vw engines for this age are designed for antifreeze because water have lower point to turn in gas condition then antifreeze. - Goran

3)   Get the coolant system pressure tested. It can leak at many places. head gasket.rad.egr cooler.pipes.etc etc.... - MANU CRAP

4)   Maybe its the waterpump leaking, which is covered my powertrain warranty, check under the car by the harmonic balancer for pink fluid. if not check if there is coolant by the transmission side, this would mean the coolant flange is leaking. It could also be the thermostat housing - Luis

Answers
1)   hit it with a shovel, thatll fix it hun - Double M Playa

2)   Sounds like someone tampered with the odometer - Bob Lostter

3)   Are you sure it is not your service indicator that is flashing ? - L G

4)   Are you sure you know what the odometer is? i've never seen one flash but if it is the odometer its probably a loose electrical connection. - Camaro Hopper

Question 5
Car is jolting wondering what could be wrong?...  I have a 95 ford contour that seems to die sometimes when idling. The main problem though is when I am going under 30 mph it seems to jolt heavily every 2-4 seconds and it feels like the transmission is getting slammed. It is still drivable and ok on the highway. Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Answers
1)   Sounds like fuel starvation, try a new fuel filter. Possibly pulling in air which then weakens the air/fuel mix. Check for leaks in the induction system. The other possibility is a "leak" on the HT ignition system. This one is the easiest to detect, open the hood at night and see if you can see the tell tale trace of blue sparks going from a wire or component to "earth" (metal) This again is usually easy to fix by either cleaning away the dirt or grease or using insulation tape. - L G

2)   It could be a blocked fuel line or old/dirty fuel, but more likely it is part of the engine electrical distribution.
First thing I would do is check (and possibly replace) the spark plugs. If that doesn't do it try replacing HT leads and distributor cap.
Good luck - Alex

3)   I have a 98 Tracer and she did just this and it was an air hose that had roted in the SC heat. Same for a friends Ford Ranger 2000.So I would say check for air leeks. (I like to go cheep first on hunting for problems) - Gabrielle Cilluffo

is a 2000 jetta a good first car for a 17 year old boy?

Question 1
is a 2000 jetta a good first car for a 17 year old boy?...

Answers
1)   Be prepared to pay EXTRAORDINARY amounts for routine maintenance (tune up, tires, light bulb replacement). The cars get good gas mileage, and will run for a long time, but $900 for a tune up is not unheard of. The engines are installed in such a way that they must be "dropped" in order for the mechanic to access everything. - Bethany

2)   If you can afford maintance for the car, it is much higher. Brand new it only had a 24 thousand mile warranty from the factory. However it was the best car I've ever owned, And that says alot considering I had a Jaguar at that time too. - Jennifer Heying

3)   I work on my Golf which is where the Jetta is derived, I have never had to drop the engine, did Bethany mean the engine floor panel !!!!!! The Jetta is a sound car but in Europe it does not really have the image a 17 years old would want. - L G

4)   i have had two 2000 jettas actually. i am 18 about to be 19. my first one was a 2000 jetta 2.0 4cyl automatic when i was 16, it was a slow car, but was a gas saver got really good gas mileage. never had a problem with it, until i got hit by a car, and it threw me into a van. safe? yeah it saved my life.
my new car is a 2000 vw jetta vr6, the 6 cylinder, 5 speed. gets good gas mileage, 20-22 city. and around 28-30 highway. and i have had no real problems besides a serpentine belt replacement, which every car needs, and a my radiator had a slight hairline fracture, which every car thats 10 years old will have its problems. overall, i am in love with my jetta and everybody loves my car. I will say its a fun car to drive, gets good mileage, and after i have done a few things to it, its a head turner for sure.

--- they are completely wrong. extraordinary amounts for a light bulb replacement? go to autozone buy a $5 dollar bulb, open the hood, pop off the bulb lid, unplug the bulb and replace. close hood. how easy is that? and extraordinary amounts for tires?..... just because its a volkswagen doesnt mean its expensive to replace tires on a volkswagen. i can put 500$ tires on my car, a honda, a nissan, anything. the price of tires dont change just because you own a volkswagen smart one. and i have never seen anybody spend 900$ even at the dealer on a tune up... and no matter what car you drive any tune up on any car will be expensive at any dealer that you go to, nissan, toyota, volkswagen, honda, just because they are the dealer. like again, just because its a volkswagen doesnt mean the tune ups are more expensive.
and the engines being dropped part... i have the 6 cylinder jetta, which is a big motor crammed into a little car. not once have i had to drop the motor to work on it at all or know of anyone dropping their motor to replace something. if you know of someone dropping the motor to replace something, then they did all that non extra needed work.

still makes me laugh to myself for that person saying that. - Eric

5)   I'm 20 and I have a 2001 Jetta VR6, and out of the 3 cars I've had, this one is by far my favorite. It will be a little more expensive than an American car to fix/maintain, but if you treat it right and don't drive like a 17 year old boy would, then you shouldn't have to worry about that much. I owned a BMW and a Lexus before this one, and it's much cheaper than those, but like I said, it will be a little more costly than an American car to fix. I have had the car for a little over a year now, and I haven't had any major problems, and she runs like she's brand new. I would definitely recommend it. Just make sure you can afford the insurance on it. - Ryan

Question 2
can you resurface an oem jetta 1.8t clutch?...  i have a 2000 vw 1.8t and the oem clutch is slipping and was wondering if i can resurface it rather than replacing it. i am also getting mixed answers from mechanics saying i can and cant resurface the clutch.

Answers
1)   A clutch is made much like a brake pad with pads bonded to a steel plate. You can't resurface a clutch. They may have meant that you'll have to have your flywheel resurfaced, but a clutch, no. And you need a new pressure plate. If you skimp on any of these 3, clutch, pressure plate, resurface flywheel, it will be slipping again in a week. - Woooohoooo

2)   if it is slipping then too much material is gone already and it is time to replace the clutch. - mdk68gto, ase certified m tech

3)   Replace the clutch and pressure plate. Resurface the flywheel. - Luis

4)   Louis tells the normal thing to do. The other two do not have a clue about auto maintenance.

I ask them where do they go to buy clutches for antique vehicles??? So short sighted. Do they understand where hamburgers come from?

The truth is you can't afford to resurface your clutch disc and you can't find anyone to do it either. Best bet for VW folks is a nice NEW Sachs Unit.

If you had a 1930's Auburn and were dialed into that culture of owners they would put you onto someone who could rebuild them.

Not a worry

wheres the petrol cap release button ?...  Just been issued with VW golf 1.6 4/5 door and very basic instructions. can't find the button which is supposed to be just inside the ddor to release petrol cap. Can anyone help a thick blonde out who's used to driving fords or vauxhalls?
Thanks in advance...

2)   hi there, i used to have a small lever by the side of my seat, on the right by the door frame in the middle. open your driver door and look down the side of your seat. hope you find it :-) - zoe d

3)   I have a 2001 Jetta, and it's in the door right in front of the little compartment. Did you try looking there? It's right next to the trunk release button. I'm sure it's probably in around the same spot on a Golf. - Ryan

4)   What year is it? The '97 Passat we had didn't have a fuel lid handle, it simply unlocked with the doors, same goes for my 2010 Golf. As long as the doors are unlocked, try lightly pressing in on the rearward side of the cap and see if it pops open. - Richard R

Question 4
is a 2000 passat a good first car for a 17 year old boy?...

Answers
1)   No foreign car is good for any car for anyone! Buy an American car (Ford, Chevy, Chrysler). And buy something that YOU can afford with money that YOU earned, not money your parents have given you. And don't forget gas, insurance and license. You need to have a job with income to pay those recurring expenses. It's not just THE CAR. I'm 17, and I don't have a car because I never worked or earned any money. My parents told me that I need to. - Brieanne

2)   Same answer to the question about the Jetta with an addendum::

I own a 2000 Passat. I had to replace my entire drivers side blinker housing about 6 months ago. Retail for the part was $135. I shop around, and get many quotes before having work done on my car, but it is still always expensive. I had my water pump replaced at the same time I had my last tune up. The cost was $1300. - Bethany

3)   Passat 2000 its good car and maybe its better then Jetta ( Jetta its basically Golf-sedan). For 17 years old person, not important Jetta or Passat, I recommended diesel TDI (Turbocharged-Direct-Injection) engine, thats a good option its have excellent fuel mileage and you don' gonna have concerns to go somewhere - you gonna have freedom to drive. VW Passat its holding excellent on the road, its car with very good stability. - Goran

4)   once again my answer. i prefer the jetta over a passat any day by the way.
and to bethany, you got screwed over on your water pump, i replaced my cousins water pump on his passat for $71.95 for the part, and it took maybe two hours to do.
my friend john from florida, replaced his passats water pump total he paid 193.45$ and his part was $85.00.

Question 5
should i buy a VW beetle with 150000 miles on the clock?...  Car has full service history & is a two litre.

Answers
1)   If the price is good, service records are reasonably up to date and the car looks good enough to please you. I would in a heartbeat.

WHY? In 1996 I bought a badly neglected 1980 VW Sirocco with 198,000 miles on it. I only replaced two things, the timing belt and the passenger side C.V. joint. Drove it from Chicago to L.A. and back, then on to Virgina Beach V.A. and back home to Chicago all the while that 16 year old, severely beaten VW carried me through 4 mountain ranges, across the plains states at 90mph for 48 stopping only for fuel, snacks and restroom breaks. After that "moto-cidal" endurance race of mine the ONLY thing that forced me to pull over and rest after the 48hr run was that I had succeeded in whipping the gearbox lube into a froth that made 4th & 5th gear howl deafeningly. So I just pulled over rested 6 hours while the gear lube settled and then was back on my way happily.

So yeah, if the timing belt and CV shafts are good (really just the passenger side) then go for it!
100,000 miles on a VW is just broken-in. ;) - Duane

2)   You should check out http://newbeetle.org and get with other owners of these usually well-made cars, now with 150k on the clock you may experience some electrical issues, everyone I know with one of these at some point has had them. They are expensive to get worked on, and that is usually infrequent but good information to know. - Jeremiah R

3)   Anytime you think about getting into a foreign vehicle, you also have to consider how much will it cost to make repairs. VW Beetles are no exception to this rule, and you will find that VW's are very expensive to work on. It's not so much the parts themselves that are expensive, it's the maintenance costs from your local shops. For example; if I were to buy a new timing belt for my VW Passat it would cost under $200.00, now the maintenance fees included are well over $700.00.

If it fits your price range, then go for it...

I also have an excellent website you can go to buy accessories for your VW... - Zack Daniels
