My daughter lost her keys to her VW Passat. It's one of those chip keys. What should I do?

Question 1
My daughter lost her keys to her VW Passat. It's one of those chip keys. What should I do?...  I heard I can go to the Huntington VW dealership, but I didn't buy the car there and I'm reluctant to go. I also heard I can do it myself, but it seems like that might take a while. Locksmith? What is the best option? Has any other Passat owner lost their car keys before?

Answers
1)   Google it - Notre Dame

2)   Go to any VW dealer with you registration. They can make you a key on the spot. - Skyhawk

3)   If the Passat is the new model where the entire key fob pushes into the dash (there is no traditional key that you turn) then you'll need to go to any VW dealer and order a new one. You'll need the VIN off the car.

Be prepared, it won't be cheap. - mccoyblues

4)   Pamela, the easiest would be to go to your nearest dealership (Huntington VW in your case) and give them the VIN number. Depending on the year model of the Passat, the key can be anything from US$60 to US$200. They will also need to program the transponder inside the remote once you have the new key. - Chris

5)   What year is your Passat? I am a locksmith in San Diego County and can make keys for VW's up to 05. You should be able to find a local locksmith in the area that could make that key for that if it's older than 05 costing somewhere between $185-$300 for a remote headed key. If it's newer than that you would need to go to the dealer.

Thanks, Jerry

6)   Sounds like you may have a newer model, since you mentioned chip key. It is still possible to go to a locksmith instead of the dealership, which will very likely charge you more. I have a Passat 2008 and since the dealership only gave me one key when I bought it, of course I went mad when I lost it. I found out that you don't actually need to go to the dealership and there are different places and locksmith companies that have the technology to handle transponder key programming. Here's a list of places you can go to: http://www.vw.com/myvw/yourcar/smartkey/en/us/assets/GlasserIndependentRepairFacilities.pdf Also, I know Green Locksmith Huntington Beach can perform transponder key programming on a wide range of car makes and models, so I would suggest them as well! - barclay

Question 2
what can you put in a 2010 jetta to give it more horsepower?...  I have a 2010 jetta 2.5 california edition and it has about 170 horespower.. i want it to go faster without spending a whole bunch of money at a shop and i dont want to buy random parts that cant even work with my engine
Anybody know anything about cars and can help me out?
Thanks :)

1)   i got this guys. - idontgivafork

2)   The best thing you can put in your car to make it drive better is a man at the wheel. - William Ashcraft

3)   Unfortunately, there are no cheap mods for more horsepower with the 2010 2.5L engine. Heck, no one offers a ECU program upgrade right now for the 2010 version. - cant_think_of_1

4)   How about checking out a vw specific site and asking the question. Check out vwvortex.com or www.goapr.com. They will have many more resources that will help you. You can also check out places that specialize in VW parts. I would first look at upgrading exhaust and intake. Perhaps a chip/tuner as well. Those three things MIGHT get you to about 200HP. If you want to get a really serious power boost, you will have to look at cams, headwork, supercharger, turbo, or nitrous. All of those are pricey and require a lot of work and tuning. Hope this helps. - John B

Question 3
My 2000 VW Bug keeps dying. Something must be draining the battery when the car is off.?...  I see alot of things online about this problem but there are no solutions. Its been fine for a year 1/2 but now everytime we turn it off it dies. Anybody know the problem? We turn everything off it makes no sense.

Answers
1)   Hi Has there been any repairs made recently, Let me know, I own collisionrepairadvise.com Call or text me. 602-909-6450 Marc - Marc

2)   Check the lead from alternator to battery. This lead may go into a joint block (if its anything like a Polo) the lead corrodes in the block and causes this problem, I have had it with one of my cars and it took an awful long time and lots of false starts before I found it ! - L G

3)   There are a few things you'd need to rule out first. 1) When you turn off the car will it start right away? If not it might be your alternator isn't working properly. 2) Check if you battery is holding power, the '99-00 VW bugs have some electrical issues and you might have a false connection which drains your battery. - alexpassini

Question 4
I need to turn my VW Touran alram OFF! any help?...  The alrm goes off 2 - 3 times a day and it is doing our heads in! It is parked on a relatively busy road road with buses turning just there, and at first we thought maybe their movement set it off, but it has also gone off whilst on a driveway with no-one going anywhaere near it. Please help: it has already gone off 3 times this morning!

Answers
1)   You are going to have to get it mended. It cannot be bypassed.
Read the manual - there may be a way of doing it without alarm - on some cars locking with the key and not the remote will not set the alarm.

Note - if not set then if it is stolen your insurers do not have to pay out. - Timbo is here

2)   It might be your door. I own a 2001 Jetta and the same thing has happened to me before. My driver-side door likes to unlock itself while I'm driving and it routinely detects itself as being ajar, tripping the annoying-as-hell buzzer. It's also detected itself opening while the alarm was set, as what happened to you. It's a common problem with MKIV VW's, however I don't know what you own.

Either way it's worth checking out: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1542461 - Kristoffer

3)   The Touran is a fairly new car, stating the obvious, is it out of warranty ? The alarm system is very sophisticated , I would tend to speak to the dealer and see if the item is covered by the warranty or subject to a recall. VW like many other brands will sometimes give a "Goodwill" contribution if it is a known fault. - L G

Question 5
Is a 1987 Volkswagen cabrio expensive to repair?...  I am looking at a 5 speed karmann edition. Only 41,000 original miles for around $4,000. The car looks like new. Just wondering if anyone knew if this was a decent price and how expensive these cars are to fix or if parts were rare.

Answers
1)   All VW parts are more expensive because they have to be imported

Unless you want to just get parts from a scrap yard - shinigamidev

2)   A 1987 Cabriolet isn't special as a "Karmann" edition. All Cabriolets are assembled from the ground up at the "Karmann" coach works in Wolfsburg Germany. "Karmann" went out of business last year.

If the car is in immaculate condition, then I would say 3000 grand tops as you can but a pretty decent 93 Cabriolet with 98K for @ 1500.

Vw parts from the dealer are expensive. But after market parts are avail from a wide variety of sources ie: www.germanautoparts.com www.autohausaz.com to mention a few.

For a detail on what to look for when buying a Cabriolet may I suggest www.cabby-info.com on Kammy's web site is a plethora of DIY and information to make a knowledgeable purchase.

At the NADA site the prices listed are: low retail 1600 average retail 2500 high retail 2900 so it is a tad over priced.

As for repairs being expensive, that depends on if you have the tools time and skill, or are going to a shop to have work done.

Most parts c an be bought on-line cheaper than it can at a Dealer or a Local Auto-jobber, but the key to VW's is Maintenance. You can skip or skimp on it. So if you buy a car and go through each system to bring it back to stock, then maintain it, you are in for a enjoyable purchase. If you think you can buy it and drive the heck out of it with out investing time or money, then this car isn't for you. - Briano

3)   Briano is a wealth of information and very accurate. He has helped me on a few of my issues with my previous 1990 Cabbie. Also the website cabby-info.com is awesome, check it out. What I really wanted to add, is there is another place that I did buy many of my parts from, their prices are reasonable and their service and knowledge are great. Not sure where you are located, but the place is in Auburn Hills Michigan, which is great for me because it's local. However they do mail order as well. http://www.partsplaceinc.com/
Check them out and good luck. - mrblueeyes17
