1)   VW is known for electrical problems. Electrical problems are difficult to track down which makes them very annoying problems. - emiller1998

2)   no they are not particularly good. i strongly recommend you look at the most recent consumer reports used cars issue. it gives a complete rundown on the cars that do well after a few years and which ones don't.
Volkswagens do not do well at all.
better get a ford focus or fusion instead. they have excellent long term reliability ratings. - Barancy Peloma

3)   VW jetta's are hunks of crap, but what the hell are you doing buying a 05 07 vehicle while having no knowledge about cars and it being a first car? get a cheap dependable late 90's toyota or chevy car. You have no business getting a newer vehicle since chances are that you will probably total it within a year no offence. you should look for something 10-12 years old when getting your first vehicle b/c they are cheap and reliable and that all that counts. - YourSolution

4)   VWs are good, my parents had 4 VWs and never had one single problem just check the car before you buy it - Echoz E

5)   I have Vw with TDI diesel engine and i new that its a good car with excellent fuel mileage.I have make 240000 on the odometer and is still running like new. A don't new about Vw with Gasoline engine i newer owned that. I recommend you VW with TDI engine its nice car for you to have. - Goran

6)   It can depends on how well the driver takes care of the car. - a_non_ah_mus

Question 2
Are Volkswagens good cars?...  Are Volkswagens good cars? Are they reliable? Or are they money traps? I don't want to get something that's going to cost me a lot to repair and something I have to repair very often.

Answers
1)   they are but the replacement parts are very expensive - Luisio

2)   Not really. They are known for having many expensive electrical problems. - emiller1998

3)   Back in the 70's they were among the best, but I wouldn't have one today. Money pits just like Bimmers. - double E

4)   they're okay, but maintenance and repair costs are more than your average Chevy or Honda. it all adds up in the end, and there's better options for your money. - Chummy Jigger

5)   Classic Volkswagens are, in my opinion, the best cars ever made. Very simple, reliable cars for everyday people but still very unique and with loads of character. The VW Beetle was a massive success, selling in excess of 25 million. Once scoffed at by Winston Churchill while the Morris Minor was in development, it is clear today what car is more of an impact on the motoring world. Get a classic Volkswagen, put some surfboards on the roof and show your mates that there is something better than plastic boxes from Japan. - zephyr

Question 3
Is 100,000 miles too much mileage on a 2 litre 04 VW Golf?...  I travel alot with work and need a car that will last me is this mileage too high? the car is in perfect condition the only thing worrying me is the high mileage!

Answers
1)   Nah, any thing above 200,000 is too much - David Sheloush

2)   That should be fine. My preference is for cars around the 100K mile mark; at 50K it is hard to tell how a car has been treated, at 100K it is hard to hide. I don't want to buy a 50K miles car and find out within the next 50K miles it has been rode hard and put away wet. If it seems to be in perfect condition now that is a good sign.

One thing, though - look in the radiator when it is cold. I have learned to reject a car if it shows signs of rust in the radiator. I've been frustrated before by a corroded cooling system and hadn't understood until then how bad it can be. - Michael

3)   My 04 Accord has 170k because I drive a lot. This car sounds fine. Just do the important maintenance Items and change the oil before it gets too dirty. I use only synthetic. Your car will last longer and run better than it will on conventional. The high mileage will help you get a better deal compared to one with lower miles and mostly city driving which is much harder on a car. - oogabooga37

4)   I recently bought a 2005 Golf Estate SDI with 118 k miles. I have done 3k miles in 8 weeks and there is little oil burn. The car is rattle free, smooth running no banging or bumping on the suspension. All controls are light and easy to use and it return 50 mpg in mixed driving. I would go as far as to say it is one of the best cars I have ever had considering I got it for a measly £2650. I would suggest you look at a diesel before a petrol. - L G

5)   what they said - Francis

Question 5
How to improve a Golf mk4 for the snow ?...  I'm a surfer/snowboarder/photographer. So when I eventually buy my golf I will defo be going up to the Pyrennese or the Alpes to snowboard. Are there any things I could do to improve my golf in the snow or any driving tips ? Don't worry snowchaines are always packed.
As it'll be my first car I can't afford a 4x4, if I could that would be my first choice.

Answers
1)   the make of car is irrelevant . the driver skill and anticipation is much more important. looking ahead and doing things early such as braking becomes essential. thinking about conditions such as black ice or ice under snow! needs to be addressed. snow chains are excellent when used correctly . pulling away for example needs slow speed and high torque. even using second gear and not 1st can achieve smoother pull away with less risk of wheel spins.
checking weather and road conditions before starting a journey can be a help.
anticipation of other drivers mistakes is also a way of combating possible potential disaster. eg car coming other way on a bend possibly a little to fast can lose traction and slide into your path and or collide.
you can of course buy special tyres with metal spikes as used by rally cars but often these are hard to come by, are expensive and many road authorities take a dim view of them being used as they can adversely affect the road surface. - hornchurchmale

2)   answer no is good ..driving skill is paramount ...however i do have a home in pyrennese ..you will not be driving up to those places in winter ..they close a lot of the passes ..and there is no way i would even consider driving only a front wheel drive car on roads like that ...you will need a 4x4 .. - boy boy

3)   Proper snow tires, Bridgestone Blizzaks came out with new tire technology this year, in addition to the multicell compound, the tire contains iron particles to emulate stud traction on ice. Many northern and central European countries make snow tires mandatory. - pbleek

4)   Get a set of 4 Blizzak snow tires. - Two Lane Blacktop
