Faulty electrics - get them looked to fast!

The electrical unit is seared and you will have to take it into a garage or I believe your battery will go dead relatively soon.

the brake pedal you step on?
thread

theres a switch that your brake pedal hits when you brake if you look under dash on drivers side you should see it kind of with a button sticking out and a wire plugged into it if this goes bad brake lights will stay on and could run down battery its called a brake light switch
boringpick6

The first think to check is the brake switch fitted to the brake pedal, often they stick in the open position. Its under the dash behind the brake pedal.

If the brake lights are constantly on this is normally down to adjustment of the brake lamp switch. The brake pedal hits the switch to turn off the lights. If slightly out too far the brake pedal does not move the switch enough to turn the lights off.
It could also be that the brake light switch has been knocked and has fallen off its mounting bracket. If this is the case you may need to buy a new switch (not that expensive) because if you refit old switch it may be loose and just fall off again.
burn

vary common on vedubs faulty switch vw have a new modified unit they did a recall but only in america but common on all VAG motors in blighty

are 1965 vw bug too dangerous?

I was looking to buy an old bug, and i came across a verry cute 1965 white vw bug (with origional surf board rack!)
& its at a reasonable price ($2800)
but people have told me i should look for one that is year '72 and up (a super beetle) because i guess they're more likely to not roll.

so, are the 1965 bugs much more dangerous, and should i just get it?

I'm 17, and have been driving a manual car for over a year now
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=791320

this is the car
:))
and my brother friend works on vws, so he can help me fix it up if that's so.

I heard the the steel made for old cars is soo strong that if i crash, i wont really get crushed.
the only thing that scares me is that they don't have air bags :(

If you like it get it, it will roll if you turn way to fast, or drive it crazy but that's true of any car.
James B

You will never roll any bug. its near impossible on a normal road.
they are only as dangerous as the driver =D (as any car is)
Go for it, just dont sit in traffic on a hot day for too long xD
Simples xD

Any V.W. can roll over. It all depends on how aggressively the driver treats the vehicle. Actually that is true of most any vehicle. If you drive it safely and with respect, you will have no trouble with it.
Alex E

Good deal. Like a gun a car is only as dangerous as the user. If you think its easy to roll a Bug, try an SUV. Air bags? I've been driving 30 years and never had one deploy. Engine looks well maintained. I'd go for it.
Mark

2800? Wow. New they were 1200.(maybe) . You can roll any car out there if you really want to. Honda's, Chev's, Ford's, Toy's. It matters not. It depends on how you drive it.
If you drive like a "white man" no problem.
Super Bugs are no different. They roll too. In fact, after I went from my 70(which I drove where 4x4's drove) to my 73 SB, I did not take that out in the bush for fear of breaking the spidery looking front end. Did not look like a log basher or could take a pounding on boulders in the bush.
Get good tires on it(radials instead of bias ply) and it will feel better right off in handling as well as get you better fuel economy.
Never got near the roll over stage.
Go for it if it seems like a good deal.

If you want to know how to roll it...rip backwards real fast and then crank the steering wheel hard and slam on the brake pedal at the same time.=roll.

I don't like scratching the paint job so I don't do it.

The '65 was the last of the 6 volt systems, there are still 6volt batteries but no other options will work, CD players.your choice but I'd pass
Dan W

That is a nice bug for the price. I would buy it soon before someone else does.

clutch pedal problem on vw golf tdi mk4?

Hi, just had clutch pedal replaced as the other one broke, common problem on this car i believe.. just got it back from garage and seems now to have developed a whirring 'rubbing noise when driving(as if a wheel is rubbing on something)from the front, only when i take the foot of the gas pedal, dont know if its anything to do with the orginal clutch problem, i took it back and the guy is struggling to find the cause, any ideas please..?

throw out bearing bad maybe
kelly_f_1999

Very odd, but it's obviously something to do with the work that's been done - perhaps the mechanic has loosened a wheel arch liner & left it loose, but he shouldn't have had to do this to change the clutch pedal.
I've not heard of the Golf 4 having a clutch pedal problem, but they do suffer from many other gearbox & clutch issues - are you sure the pedal was changed?
J G

As it,s only come on since replacing the clutch pedal the only possibility is that it is the clutch thrust bearing that,s noisy but i fail to see how that is.Perhaps something under the car is rubbing from when they put the car on the ramp or jacked it up.
Arlanymor

Call a mechanic
Patrick H

Have you asked somebody else to drive your car? You may cause the problem because you are not used to the new clutch sensitivity and you don't do the clutch/gas change at optimal time/rate. I can't say for sure if I'm not there to hear that "whirring 'rubbing noise"
gabinord

if it only happens when the engine is running, and your foot isnt on the pedal, then its the carbon thrust bearing, and its quite common, but not enough of a problem to warrant changing the clutch, til it goes... and then buy a full 3part clutch.... which will cure the problem...

and a price... around 300 350 quid all in.

Need help turning off daytime headlights on VW Passat.?

I need assistance in how to turn off my daytime headlights in my 2003 VW Passat. I just can't find a way to completely turn off all my lights. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

The only help I can offer you is leave them be . It's a lot safer and since it is built in to your car everything is built to compensate don't be a putz sorry I don't like to do things just because someone thinks it's cool. By the way in a lot of states and provinces it you do what you are suggesting they can make you pay to get it fixed again..
shade tree mech

when parked you can apply the parking brake. with the lights in the off position/
Tim R

You can research the idea on vwvortex.com, many people have done this but requires modifying the headlight relay I believe.
jb88

switch off the ignition. Or use a hammer. Or putting on the parking brakes.

The running lights are to make you more visible while driving down the road. We see headlights way before we see the color of the car.
Best answer is usually right

Its all built in the computer in the car.
So you will need an expert/diagnostic equipment to change the settings but only if the system allows it.
Otherwise you are stuck with it.
VOLVO cars have had this for a long time.
no way

How much would it cost to put airbags in a 67 VW Bus?

I want to get one, but my parents won't let me because they don't have airbags. So how much would it cost to get them installed?

Asked by: Athena M @ 2009-05-28 16:53:49

It will cost more than that thing is worth.Just get a modern car.
Johnny C

They guy who said more than the car is worth doesnt know about these. If done properly these things go at auction for around 25-35k sometimes more. As for the airbags it all depends on what kind of suspension u want. but on avarage it will be around 3 grand
lbm323@sbcglobal.net

Airbags, in and old bus? What's the point? Tell your parents you'll only drive it on Sundays to meets.

Then go buy a car with airbags.
bump

Safety issues with the bus would not be addressed by a steering wheel air bag, as the steering wheel is not pointed at you. During the crash you feet get the treatment. The side impact is a problem as you have only a single piece of tin and some glass between you and the crash. Also you are above the front wheel. so there is no real "car frame" to absorb any crash forces. There is no "crumple zone". as there is nothing there to crumple but you.

Part of owning a bus is the "you can't live forever" attitude of the owners.

The main safety deterrent of owning a VW- is the "don't do that" defensive driving developed by VW owners. It's like walking the desert in flip-flops looking for rattlesnakes.

Is the VW Bug a good car?

I'm looking for a first car and I'm curious about vintage Beetles (1960-1970ish). Are they safe? Do they run well on freeways? Fun to drive?

Asked by: Chornbeak @ 2009-05-27 20:34:09

They are reasonably safe as far as that era of car goes, but miles behind a modern car. They can be very fun to drive, fuel efficient, and reliable if put together right.
AsYLum dRiVeR

Vintage Volkswagen Beetles are great cars if you're willing to put the time into them. Unlike most modern cars, they require a lot of attention to keep them running at their peak. Parts are relatively easy to find (MA Motorworks, BFY Obsolete Parts, Wolfsburg West) and cheaply bought. As for safety... they are definitely not a good car for a first timer. I learned to drive stick on one and I worked myself up to driving it every day. There are no airbags, the engine is not in the front to add some type of protection, there is no structural cage to prevent crumpling. If you feel confident enough in yourself to drive one then go for it. A lot of people think they are great first cars because they're cute and fun, but it would not be my car of choice to have a wreck in. Freeway driving in a Beetle is another area where you have to get used to not being comfortable. The Bug will run all day at 70 mph, but it won't go much faster than that nor will you have any power to pass other cars. Also, A Beetle weighs a little over a ton, so cross-winds and tail winds from trucks can provided a hair-raising experience if you're not holding onto the steering wheel tightly enough. As for fun to drive... yes, they are a lot of fun to drive if you can deal with their quirks. I would recommend that you buy How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive for the Compleat Idiot by John Muir before you buy one for yourself. If you read through that book and decide you can deal with taking care of it, then go for it. thesamba.com is also a really great resource.

Good luck!
Michael J

There are thousands of accessories available to make a classic Beetle unique. You can do lots of things to the engines to make them more powerful. Keep in mind that the dynamics of driving a rear-engined car are unique. If you turn onto a gravel road going too fast, you are likely to spin around and end up in a ditch.
Ryan

I agree with Michael J ... I've had a '73 Super Beetle before, and I loved it. Also note ... they are great for practicing "backyard mechanic" skills on. Very easy to work on for the mechanicly inclined. If you know how to work on cars, you'll love learning more and more about being able to do alot of the repairs yourself without a lot of complicated tools. If you don't like getting your hands dirty ... I say be ready to pay or else walk away.
