keep the car well serviced and the engine will run forever.
wullie010669

the engine are fairly bullet proof it'll easily do a 100k and beyond if looked after and serviced regular
evil g-bo

if you drive it with care it will last 20 years if you abuse it it will last a few years
Ercan S

Most diesels can do several hundred thousand miles if regular services and a change of clutch around half way
Mick

With care it should do 200K.
Q

You'll have got the message. With care, regular maintenance and repair as needed there's no reason why it shouldn't go on for many hundreds of thousands. Depends on you and your right foot too.
Bardic

If you look after the car you will get fed up with he car before the car runs out of steam .

The later Tdi pd will do 300 thousand miles plus with out having a major engine refurb but the other parts will wear out quicker ie Water pump, temp sender unit, Fuel pump with Integrated brake vacuum pump etc will wear out first.

One of our garage courtesy cars a golf tdi pd130 estate 2001 has clocked 295,000 miles and is still running sweet but we have replace many of the parts, The service history pile is almost as big as the yellow pages.

Typical parts that wear out.

Suspension components wear out at approx 70k
Water pump failures are common at 80k due to being plastic.
Clock spring for drivers air bag replaced 4 times in the vehicles life.
Door locks wear out costs £80 for new ones.
Clutches last 150k max especial Duel mass flywheel type cost approx £600/ £800 for new kit plus flywheel.
Unit injectors on later Pd fail wire perishes.

Did I connect the fuel lines backwards 71 Superbeetle?

The fuel line from the gas tank---does it go to the upper or lower port of the fuel pump? I'm afraid to start it up until I get this little detail handled. Thanks for your response, and yes, I agree. I'm an idiot.

mightymanx

the top answer is right.i am looking at my bug now and the line from the tank goes on the bottom.the top goes to your carb.
jayocular

The upper line goes to the carburettor, the lower line to the fuel tank.

If you want to check it, connect the lower line to the fuel tank and leave the top line disconnected. Get someone to turn the engine over (i.e. crank the car by trying to start it). This will not damage the engine. Gas should flow out of the fuel pump. If you put your finger over the pipe you should feel the pressure of the pump. Note, if their is still fuel in the carburettor, the engine will start, so make sure that the person cranking the engine switches it off straight away if this happens, otherwise you will have gas all over the floor.

I repeat, you will not damage the engine by starting it with it dis-connected or connected the wrong way. If connected the wrong way, fuel will not flow to the carburettor and the engine will not run.

Does a turbodiesel engine in a VW Bug take diesel fuel or regular gasoline?

My brother told me one thing, my boyfriend told me the opposite, and I have no damn clue. I'm curious :)

Turbo-diesel engines use diesel and turbo-gasoline engines use gasoline.
orrmadeit

ARE YOU REALLY THAT STUPID/?/ I mean you need to start thinking for your self. Did you get one of those "mercury" shots as a youngster?? Are you really asking if a diesel engine takes gasoline??? I recommend you run away from home by at least 1000 miles so you can get away from these people who are trying to make an idiot of you.

I had to go to Australia to get away from the people who were trying to make an idiot of me. It finally worked.

This is a cry for help- other posters- join in this poor person need some help to gain some self respect. I mean why would you listen to these people who have no clue. They are just f9cking with you- there is no love here!!! Go search for the real thing- this has nothing to do with "GAS vs Diesel".
williamM

Any turbo-diesel engine can only use diesel. This is as indicated by the name turbo-diesel (turbo for turbo charged engine and diesel for the type of fuel used).

Do not get confused with the term turbo. All that this states is that the engine is turbo-charged Turbo charged engines can run on a variety of different fuels, even bio-diesel.

Regardless of what some of the other answerers have responded with, remember "There is no such thing as a stupid question" also "If in doubt, ask".

This is far better than say filling a gas car with diesel or vice-versa with expensive consequences. I have known it to occur on more than one occasion by people who assumed that they were to smart to ask questions.

what is a vw pancake motor?

what is a voltswagon pancake motor and how can you tell if you have one????

It's a nickname for the flat four air cooled VW engine.
Marc

Its a horizontal motor in VW vans and buses, not the vertical motor in Beetles.
L L

The Beetle, VW Van, the Type III cars, and the Ghia used aircooled boxer motors that are so flat as to resemble pancakes.

If you have an old Beetle, T1, T2, Microbus, Square/Fast/Notchback or Karmann Ghia, you've got one. They found their way into a bunch of other cars including some Vanagons, and the Porsche 914.
Felix C

The VOLKswagen aircooled engine in the beetle is a type1 engine with an upright cooling system.
looks like this.

The type 1 engine is used in Volkswagen type 3 models, with a pancake cooling

type 4 engine used in the 411, 412, Porsche 914 and the 1972 -1983 1/2 type 2, is a completely different engine from the type 1 and type 3.
looks like this.

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/395356.jpg

The type three was called the pancake engine to denote the difference between the type1, beetle application and the type 3 application as the internals were the same. There was no type 4 engine when the type 3 first came out. The name pancake was mistakenly associated with the type 4 because of the similarity in the cooling system. the internals are completely different

Probably, but for reassurance i would get a small bungee cord or two and hook it down to something solid until you get it fixed

The skirt is only there to look good. As long as the top itself is locked into the down position you are golden.

2006 WRX/WRX STI vs. Mazdaspeed 3 vs. VW GTI/GLI?

I am 19, and looking to get my first car. It will be used, and I know most of these are in my price range. I am not looking for advice on pricing of the car, insurance, etc.

I know the STI is more powerful than the others, but in terms of style (interior and exterior looks), performance, value, reliability, fuel economy, and fun factor, which do you prefer?

Also if you own one of these, please let me know if they have a lot of problems, and also which one you think looks best.

If anyone says GTI/GLI, which one should it be and why? Also, would you get the stick or the DSG on these models?

Do you think any of these look bad also? Do you like or dislike the look (not functionality) of hatchbacks, and what is the reason for that?

Can only offer my opinion and knowledge of the VW GTI/GLI. First, the GTI and GLI are different in the first is a 2 door hatch and the GLI is a Jetta. Both have the 2.0L FSI Turbo. The DSG is by far the best "stick auto" in the industry by far. ROCK solid tranny and I havent seen a single problem with a DSG so far and I see alot of VW's as I am a dealer technician. I also feel the build quailty wins for the VW over the other 2 choices. The Interior is flawless. Trust me when I say I am NOT bias towards VW's in any way. Why dont you try renting a GTI 2.0L FSI Turbo and see how you like it. I bet you fall in love.

IMPORTANT need a new key for my VW passat since the old one broke. HOW DO I DO THIS?

the key got stuck in the door and broke off, and that was my only key so i can't drive it. how do i get a new key??

Take your title to your nearest VW dealer (for VIN and proof of ownership along with your license) and they will cut you a new key. It shouldn't be too expensive... $15? It's been a while...
Brett P

Take you title to a dealer along with your broken key and have them make you one. heard they run around $250 each.
Guero

Most dealerships cannot cut the key from code (if it is the so called "switch blade or lazer cut key type); it requires a very exprensive key machine that is not required for purchase by VW. If you have an older VW mode that uses a regular key, then perhaps you might be in luck. In some cases, VW has recorded the key code in the VW warranty system, in order cases, they might need to call the selling dealership for the code (VW didn't record factory key codes until about 1997 or so) hoping they were smart enough to record the tags supplied with the original factory keys.

In many dealerships, they can order a cut key from the facing parts depot usually for next day delivery. You don't say what year it is so that would make a huge difference in cost. If it is the old standard type key, they can get code (if VW recorded it!) and usually cut a key in a couple minutes. The new generation key, usually we be ordered on a priority order for overnight stock order.

You might also require a new door lock, someone needs to remove the broken key; if that's not possible, then a new lock should be installed. The standard key cylinder is simple enough; just install the correct wafers/pins into the cylinder to the correct code and put it in the door. The lazer cut key cylinders are a pain in the rear; special order from VW and they take time to make and are expensive. Some dealerships will install a temporary cylinder in the door that does not match the other cylinders, while you wait for your custom order to arrive.

You will need to provide proof of ownership (usually registration in your name and license ) is enough.

Hope this helps, a car nut.
