Is a 2000 VW Golf GTI 1.8 good for a first car?

Is a 2000 VW Golf GTI 1.8 good for a first car?

[Best Answer]Don't listen to the people that say the insurance is too much, or that it isn't a good car. I got a 2000 GTI for my first car a few months ago, and it is a great car! It is a 5 speed manual (which is the way to go!) Mine has 90 thousand miles, and it is still running strong. It isn't that expensive on insurance, and it is fast, but not too fast to handle. I absolutely love my GTI.

Get an insurance quote then decide...

It is a good reliable car if the millage is reasonable

If you are a new driver, I would suggest you buy a car with a smaller engine until you have more experience in driving, especially on motorways.
nosdda

Not very sensible. Massive insurance, and you will probably write it off anyway.
BARRY B

Yes it's good car
JOHNNY C

because of the engine size it will cost a bomber for a new driver so my advice iif you on the limit with the amount you can spend on insurance is stick to the lower size engines (like say no more than a 1.4 or so) until you've got more experience of driving, it still might be possible to be allowed insurance but just beware of the high price.
Chris A

Yes it is a good car. But check the insurance, and the history of the car. You need to be sure it is actually a GTI. If it is not actually one, the owner just put one on, then you could maybe get a better insurance quote.
The Reventon

Depends.
If you are looking for a car that just goes from point A to point B then no, the GTI is not for you. Get a Kia or Toyota or scooter instead.
On the other hand, if you are a Driver/enthusiast, if you love cars that thrill with their handling prowess, if you like the way your back pushes into the seat upon accelerating, then the GTI is for you.
Let me explain; I don't mean to drive recklessly or stupidly, but GTI's are for fun Driving!
Having said that, I agree that insurance may cost more. (Just a few dollars more for me as I have a perfect driver record; so far...)
And if you do get the GTI, be sure to change oil/filter with quality oil every 6000 miles.
If it has more than 80,000 miles on odometer, check to see if the timing belt has been replaced (ask to see service record of the car).
All the above applies to any make of car that you consider.
Sure hope you get the GTI; the world needs more enthusiastic and responsible drivers.
BTW, I drive a 2005 turbo GTI with 45,000 screamin' joy-filled miles on it!
Only wish GTI's were around when I was searching for my 1st car!!
fenton

They are good cars, but not as a first car.
Get something smaller (engine wise) for a couple of years and get some no claims bonus under your belt.

The ABS light and traction control light have come upon the dash board of my golf?

I was driving along the other day and the traction control light and ABS light have came upon the dashboard, I know i should take it to a garage asap but most garages around here when they see a girl they bang £150 on the bill straight away.Im not driving it anywhere at the moment!! Any ideas ?

Go to Autozone. They should be able to tell you why those lights are on for free.
busta68

The lights come on when the car needs to be serviced for those areas. Look at the level of the brake fluid (under the hood - or bonnet) and if it is below where it should be, add fluid and that may make the lights go out. I would suggest getting a repair manual for you car so that you can troubleshoot things like this yourself, and if it needs to go to a garage, you will have the knowledge of what repairs are needed - and what repairs they are trying to get you to buy !!
not 2 B fooled

hmm it sounds like either it is a genuine problem with your ABS or if you had a flat battery or jumped started the car that may have caused it.

if this is the case take it to a guarage and tell them this is what happen and my dad or husband ask to reset the computer, and they should charge 30~40 pounds, good luck mate.
TuTor

if the lights are on means something is wrong but could be anything from faulty wire to something more serious so get it in the garage

get your dad, older brother or male friend to take it in i know what you saying cause my mum and sister dont like taking cars into garages cause thay know thay will get ripped off
Steven

Unless you are a competent auto electrician or know one then you will need a garage to sort this for you.
Be aware that until fixed you have no ABS or traction control so the car is a little more unsafe than it was.
You should also be aware that if you have an accident your insurers could opt not to pay out as the car is not in proper working order - they love excuses like that.
Timbo is here

could be a ABS sensor on one of the brake's or your brakes pads are getting low

however this does sound like the ABS control module - NOT CHEAP

Should I buy a second hand 2 litre Volkswagen EOS?

I would have to take a decent sized loan and probably not be able to pay money into my savings for a while, but it's a cool convertible! Plus will it cost a fortune to put petrol in a two litre?

Asked by: miltongloaming @ 2009-05-13 13:34:45

Answers ::
The only reason not to is that it is a first model year for that car and you they usually have some issues. Wait a bit for the next model year. Those 2.0 litre engines get good gas mileage and it is a fairly light car for a convertible. Other than that they are great cars and I love the hard top. If I had the spare cash I would buy it!

so by took it off, im assuming you mean the battery cables

1. 'idiot' light means something is wrong with the engine, you just dont ignore it
2. probably gonna have to go to a dealer, bugs are know n for eletrical problems, and when you take the battery of newer cars, they get screeewed up

Eminem to take autoworkers to Jimmy Kimmel show
AP, May 12, 2009 10:21 am PDT

Eminem says he and Jimmy Kimmel will fly about 200 laid-off autoworkers to Los Angeles for Friday's taping of his appearance on Kimmel's show. The Michigan rapper says he and Kimmel want to remind everyone that real people are being affected by what's going on in Detroit.
He tells the Detroit Free Press, through his publicist, that news reports ignore people who have lost their jobs without getting big payouts after dedicating themselves to the auto industry.
Eminem says he and Kimmel also want to show some of the autoworkers "a good time while we're at it."
He's promoting the upcoming release of "Relapse," his first studio album in four years.
Eminem will also appear on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on May 19 and May 22.

this what happen when people buy cars from oversea 200 people lose their jobs!

...... I was gonna says something that wouldnt have helped her question.... but i chose the smarter path....
Please explain what you meant by "took it off". I assume your not referring to clothing?
Couldnt help myself...

Buying a new one would only be the start of you problems. The speedo in your car is coded to the immobilizer system. Changing it will cost you to get it coded otherwise it may not even run. I've never run into your problem from disconnecting the batt. So you may need to pull it again and check connections.
David S

The way to make the idiot lights go off is for the idiot to take the car in to be serviced. The service mechanic turns off the light once the problem is fixed.
Ignoring the idiot lights is like saying "Houston: we have a problem.....so I will wait till it breaks and then you can rob me blind while you fix it"...because that is what is going to happen.

can it really be so expensive to change the transmission oil on my 2006 jetta?

I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION OIL OF MY 2006 JETTA 2.5 AUTOMATIC AND I CAN'T FIND THE PARTS AT NO OTHER AUTO PARTS EXEPT AT THE DEALER BUT TO MY SURPRISE THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT FOR PARTS ONLY I WOULD HAVE TO PAY 317 DOLLARS PLUS LABOR IS THAT FAIR?

Asked by: mateo @ 2009-05-13 17:08:19

[Best Answer]Firstly, your Jetta does not require a transmission fluid service. It does use a VW supplied fluid for the unit, but I'd have to say that $317 seems quite high. I have not serviced a unit yet, so I have no idea what the fluid costs. On the previous AG4 units, fluid ran about $20.00 per quart, give or take a few dollars either side of that.

At this point, I would not service the unit; your transmission has powertrain coverage to 5 years or 60,000 miles anyway and its been my experience that the fluid ought to make 7 years or 100,000 miles. At 100k or 7 years, even if VW says its "lifetime" fluid, I have the unit serviced. By the way, did you know that at 6 years regardless of milage VW calls for replacement of the TPS (tyre pressure sensors (if your vehicle is so equipped)).

You should not be surprised that the fluid for the transmission is only available at the dealership; the same applies to the power steering fluid and engine coolant. DO NOT intermix the fluids! You'll end up with very expensive repairs!!! I recommend consumers purchase and keep with the vehicle the power steering fluid and coolant, especially if they have their oil changes at a quick lube spot. They won't have the correct fluids on hand for the vehicle. Make sure you tell them to use only the power steering fluid and/or coolant that you have on hand.

FYI, most makes of vehicles now use special fluids for the transmission, engine coolant and power steering fluid. In the aftermarket for some of the popular Japanese makes, some companies in the aftermarket are now making some of the fluids available, though they are more expensive than the regular "Dextron V" and the like. Honda for several years has used their own transmission fluid and Toyota has done the same. If you have a CVT (continously variable transmission--some Hondas, some Toyotas, some Fords, some Nissan) those vehicles use fluids that generally (until recently for Toyota and Honda) have only been available at the dealership level. Besides that fact, the fluids are expensive (at least if you've been purchasing Dextron at 2.50 a quart).

Hope this helps, a car nut.

Did you call any other shops in the area and ask them what they would charge? Most towns of any size should have in independent that can handle imports.

And who's to say if it's "fair" or not. Does the car take different trans. fluid? Is the flush easy to do? Are there other parts or supplies involved? Is there an environmental/disposal fee involved? How much labor is involved?

Oh, yeah - and please turn off the caps lock.
Ralfcoder

What do you expect, it is a VW. Parts and synthetic fluid for my GM were about $80.

The professor is the most correct! Although he and I dont share the same views on changing the fluid, he has the best answer here.
Oh and the price of the 09A trans fluid is roughly $48/Qt at our dealer... but then our prices jump around (you know what Im talking about Nut...)

How can I fix the rubbery painted on coating in the interior of my jetta?

It's a 2000 Jetta, and the interior's not in great shape. I'm having it detailed, so that will help a lot, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do about the peeling surfaces. I'm not sure what they're made of, it seems like some sort of stretchy rubber paint that has been stamped to look like leather. It's on the handles, glove compartmemt, parking brake, and probably other areas as well. Has anyone else had this problem?
Should I just scrape it all off? Is there something I can buy to re-coat it?
I also have a broken glove compartment and front cupholders. If anyone has any idea how much it might cost to fix those things, that would be very helpful too. Thanks!

Asked by: mars @ 2009-05-13 12:35:15

Answers ::
Hello. My 2000 Volkswagen GTI had the same problem. The rubbery coating was peeling like crazy. It really bothered me, so I looked online, and the only way to get rid of it is to buy new pieces, or scratch it all off. I didn't feel like spending the time/money to get all new interior pieces, so I just scraped it all off. It looks a lot better, and it only took a couple hours to do the whole interior. I just used my fingers, but you could use a blade to get under the coating, but then you have the risk of gouging the plastic underneath. It comes off pretty easy. The cup holders are about $60 or so, if they are the pop out ones above the radio like mine. I am not sure what the console will cost, but i bet somewhere like $100. Maybe less, I am not sure cause my car just has little cubby spots instead of a console. Hope this helps!
nick93mac

Nick is pretty close on this one. The cupholder is roughly $45. The glove box LID (thats all you need) can be really expensive ($180 or so)....but some are different so you really need to call and ask the dealer for the price. Its probably hard for the home DIY person to replace, but here at our dealer we charge an hour to replace it. Keep in mind you will need to transfer the lock cylinder from the old lid handle to the new one, and dont install it in the wrong position or you will end up breaking the new handle trying to remove it again.
Maverick

go to the website www.vwvortex.com there are tons of people parting out their cars and you can get those pieces for cheap also the Bently service manual will show you how to remove and replace them
Devin S

Wow, I have had the same three problems with mine! I have scraped most of the stuff off the door handles already; and it actually looks better and it's easier to keep clean. Dirt kind of just sticks to the plastic coating stuff. The glove compartment cost me about $75.00 to fix and about a month after I had it fixed, it broke again. Unless you plan to sell or trade it in soon, don't bother. The plastic is too cheap on the hinges to bother. My cup holder was broke when I bought the car and small pieces have broken off as time has went by. I would also not bother replacing this either unless you really have to.
