3)   £25!!!!???? You're on drugs! The part alone would cost that.. then there's the antifreeze, and the labour to do it.... You're going to be looking at least £125 dependent on engine. You don't mention whether it's diesel, petrol, what size, auto/manual.... Air con or not, it all depends on the exact spec of the car. - Hairy Jim

Also, in order to change the water pump, the timing belt needs to come off, so it is recommneded to do a timing change anyway.

5)   I just had the water pump changed on my jetta (but it's a 96, so this may not be helpful at all). My guy charges 60$ an hour.
The water pump cost 43$ and he said it was one of the cheapest water pumps he's seen in a long time,
The problem was that apparently vw waterpumps are real pains to do. My dad who had vws for decades said the same thing, so the part will be cheap, but I guess the actual replacing is going to be tricky.

If they're still as tricky as they used to be then you may want to consider that. (if it is a for a friend, I'd say i'll give you the part, and you just pay me the labour) - Samantha

Which is faster and more reliable a 2000 Volkswagen Passat or a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta?...  Im buying a either one but i wanna know which is faster and reliable.

1)   they're both about the same in terms of reliability, and that reliability level is basically crap after it hits about 130-140k. as for which one is faster, it all depends on which engine it has. each car is available with a handful of different engines, but my guess would be that a Jetta VR6 is quicker considering it weighs less.

seriously, each of these cars will just end up giving you a lot of grief. they require more maintenance than most Japanese and American cars, the repairs cost a decent bit more as well. considering that it's going to be in the shop every month, is it really worth it? there's plenty of good cars out there, don't be stupid. - Biff

Jetta by a mile. the Passat is an Audi.

Faster? ya gotta be kiddin, they spec out way different.

It is also less expensive to buy and maintain, because there are so many of them.
But the Passat has more comfort, larger interior, better handling, more status, and better resale. - Motorhead

4)   Speaking in general terms, the Jetta should be the faster car; lighter weight, smaller body size, a variety of powertrain options, make the Jetta a better choice. The Passat is a larger car; roomer, larger trunk (boot), but less responsive handling and a lower resale value over time. The Kelly Blue Book rates a 2000 Jetta GLS V6 5 speed with 100k, with a trade in value (in excellent condition) at 2825 USD, the Passat GLS V6 5 speed with 100k, with a trade in value (in the same condition) with exactly the same value: 2825 USD. Check it out for yourself. Considering that the Passat was considerbly more expensive than the Jetta (at least 20% higher cost), this means that the Passat has depreciated more than the Jetta has.

In terms of speed, you can make the Jetta (or for that matter, the Passat) with the turbo 1.8 much faster; plenty of aftermarket speed equipment exists for the turbo motor; i.e., programming chips for ECU, waste gate improvements, boost in turbo pressure, exhaust system work, etc....

Both the Jetta and Passat have well known faults; 1.8 and v6 have had numerous issues in the past: coil packs, window regulators, heated seats problems, cruise control issues, climatronic (heater/ac control) issues, automatic transmission issues, vacuum leaks, etc. But the Passat also has a weak front suspension and steering linkage on top of everything else; tie rod ends that wear out, upper control arm links (usually worn out by the time the car has 80k), which just add to the other issues both cars have. In my experience at the dealership service department level, the Passat by far was more troublesome than the Jetta/Golf and overall was more expensive to repair and maintain.

If possible whatever vehicle you choose, avoid the automatic transmission. Although many of them by this time have had the various updates in software and other issues done, they still cannot overcome a transmission that is below average in reliability, even with all the updates performed.
The vehicles are best driven with a manual transmission, this improves the performance as well as the fuel economy regardless of engine choosen.

Finally, as someone else has pointed out, there are a lot more Jettas around than Passats (at least where I'm at in California) and so body parts and other items are less expensive and easier to find. - a car nut

1)   cold air intake is the best way to go. it'll give the engine a deeper, throatier noise instead of the high-pitched weed wacker sound that an exhaust will give you. i'd recommend a K&N intake, but they usually cost close to $200. i really wouldn't recommend any of the cheaper brands considering they can actually hurt your car's power rating. - James Dean

2)   A cold air intake gives you a louder hiss sound that's pretty much about it, and it's kinda useless cause your turbo will just heat up the air anyways. So just buy a short ram intake - The Yiff

volkswagen polo coupe G40 engine?...  im after a g40 engine and cant seem to find one iv tried online part dealers but no luck must have loom gear box etc if not then il settle for a bigger engine than my 1ltr cheers! i live in hull
