How Can I Make My VW 03 Passat Faster?

Question 1
How Can I Make My VW 03 Passat Faster?...  i have a 2003 1.8T 5Speed and i was wondering, How can i make my car faster?
or what do i have to put into it to make it so i can race.
im just trying to race on the streets,.. not serious racing.. just to mess around with ppl hah

racing like from light to light or on the freeway lol

1)   race where/who? vw's are built heavy like tanks. - MCXD

2)   The 1.8T is already quick enough in a straight line. Try other things. Like getting your G up. Some R type tires, stiff shocks, coilovers, stiffening bars to get rid of frame flex, etc. And if you're for real about racing, strip it out. Getting rid of weight is your best friend - Nathan Sherman

3)   see if they have any carbon fiber available for your car. Carbon fiber is extremely light so it'll take away alot of weight from your car making it quicker.
Also, see if they have air intakes and turbo kits. They also have ECU chips that can add up to 50 HP to your car. :) Hope this was helpful.

oh yeah, check out, http://www.goapr.com/products/?category=Volkswagen
they specialize in audi, vw n porsche. - JBurg

4)   Bypass the airconditoner pulley, either by getting a smaller belt or just deactivating it. - TKEM

5)   If you really wan't to soop it up...Do a full 3" catless downpipe resonator and muffler, get it chipped with neuspeeds chip, add a turbo inlet pipe, and short ram air intake. The short ram air intake will make it sound like you have a blow off valve, giving you that "woosh" sound when you shift. I used a neuspeed short ram air intake on mine, it made the engine louder, and people think I have a blow off valve.

The best exhaust I've found to make the engine sound aggresive and not ricerish is a Techtonics resonator with Borla muffler...they used to sell it as a "TechTonics catback" or "TT catback"

With those mods, you can beat just about any ricer. I keep up with mustang GT's in my jetta with those mods...I added some other small stuff too...but forgot what it was at the moment because it's been a few years

But keep in mind, if you drive the car like a bat out of hell all the time you WILL decrease the life of the engine with these mods. I only race mine every once in a while, and surprise people every time I do....haha...It's a sleeper.

You can find most of these parts used on www.vwvortex.com for cheap, saving you money. just DON"T buy a used performance chip from there, get a new one.... - Mentat

Question 2
I'm planning to buy a 2004 volkswagon jetta 1.8t. I just wanted to get feedbacks from others who've owned one?...

Answers
1)   My sister and I shared one and we LOVED it!! Ours was black and it was just fine in the snow and ice. I strongly encourage that you get one. I loved it and I hope you do too!!! - Kippy

2)   Transmissions are garbage. - Hank Scorpio

3)   I love the car, the only problem I have had with it is...the slight peeling of some of the interior pieces...and...the cupholder broke. But, since you're buying an 04 you will have a different cupholder than I do, so you won't run into the same problem.

Some people also reported their ECU's to go out, which is about a 1k fix...if you're buying a manual the clutch will last anywhere from 60k-120k miles, maybe longer if you drive it well. I have heard a few reports on the transmission going out...but..I replace my transmission fluid and oil religiously to keep everything working well and check for wear and tear and at 110k miles my transmission still works beautifully. The previous owner of my car shot the clutch, but I was able to drive 20k more miles on it.....It does really well in the snow, and if I drive like a grandpa I get around 32-36mpg with a manual.

All in all, I love the car, the other parts that did go out were covered under recalls and fixed for free. (seat warmers and ignition coils)

If you do buy it, and notice a chirping sound when it's running that's the timing belt getting old and letting you know it needs to be replaced.

So, yeah. I would say buy one. Take good care of it, and it will treat you well. - Mentat

4)   I have an 05 and it runs great. Just like Mentat said though, maintain it well. Once you get the jetta replace the timing belt and check all the hoses since the jetta's sensors like any other electronic thing will go bad if liquid like coolant or oil gets on them. They run great though. Im satisfied with mine, had some issues but due to maintenance issues that could have been prevented by me and the previous owner. Transmission is great if its a manual. If it's automatic check it instantly also because they get worn after 80k miles. VWs are better than any other japanese cars and are fun to drive. The maintenance costs are well worth it. - eck210

Question 3
Tire recommendation...what's the best all season tire for my 07 GTI?...  I want a decent all season tire that will work in snow. I'm spending money on winter tires. I've had Conti-Pros & Michelin's and I'm not impressed with either. I prefer Vredersteins but they don't have anything in my size. 225/45r17
I live in NY

Answers
1)   Cooper Tire. Lifeliner GLS to be exact.

Inexpensive and good ride with great rain and winter handling. - nywholesale

2)   You should get full on winter tires (Vredersteins?) in a narrower - taller tire say a 195/60 R17 or such that is the approximate diameter as your 225/45r17s. 225/45s don't make good winter tires - that is why they are not in your size. Get full on summer GT tires on your original wheels for max cornering in summer. Get some cheap winter wheels and put the narrower - taller aspect tires on for winter. Narrower tires go through snow better. They dont have to push as much of it. - Thomas E

3)   Ok, so you don't like 17 inch sno's. No doubt who would.

15 x 6 steel wheels with 205/65-15 Generals. tirerack.com baby. Get studs if you feel the need

I actually Ice Race that combo on my 2003 GLI 24V VR6 6spd MT, I do not likeor use studs myself.

ASE Cert Auto Tech, since 1978, SCCA Member since 1978 - sci

4)   For an all season tire, Continental Extreme Contact DWS. I have them on my 2008 GTI and I am happy with them. They are becoming a favorite tire amoung people looking for a good all season tire for their sports car. Alot of the BMW guys are putting these on. - Louis G

Answers
1)   you can try this to see if this will help...
http://www.longenterprises.com/ - Mr. Dent

2)   I love a bargain as much as anyone and I used to love all the cheap stuff I could find on eBay, but nowadays it seems so hard to find anything cheap over there and just when we're all finding it tougher to just pay our bills. I don't give up so I was looking for someplace online where I could still find myself a bargain... and by accident I came across this site I never heard of before where you get rock bottom prices from police impounded stuff, I mean I was worried about scams but this stuff is actually real and I got some real cheap stuff there... it's become my new eBay lol! Go to WinItems.com - Leeann Campos

3)   Dealership manual. They sometimes come in volumes and are big. They are also expensive (around 120$) Books like chilton don't go very in depth with most things. But depending on what you are stuck on (trans housing removal or removing a gear or whatever) it may not help much. Manual transmissions can be hard to get apart sometimes since some of the interference fits are tight and gears are brittle. - A S

4)   Chiltons suck. You need a Bentley, for this and anything you do to your car. Here's one:
