Are old volkswagen beetles stick shift!?

Question 1
Are old volkswagen beetles stick shift!?...  i REALLY want a 1950's,60's,70's, or 80's beetle and im just wondering if its a stick shift cuz if it is then i need my mother to teach me to drive a stick shift then :P

Answers
1)   Yes. Even with the "automatic" you need to learn to shift like a manual. - Sacha

2)   Yes they are. They came stock with 2 different style trans axles. 1 is a manual 4 speed with a clutch and the other in a stick-o-matic 4 speed. You still have to shift between gears, but there is not a clutch. You can stop with it in gear and it will not stall. They are not very common and are considered JUNK. - Rod Knocker

3)   Rod nocker is right. You don't want to buy one of semi-auto bugs tho. They are not very common and not very reliable. Try to get a carburated one, the fuel injected ones are complicated and quirky. You'll catch onto stick shift in about 2 hours. Just remember a five speed is shifted using a "controlled" slipping of the clutch. Let it out too fast and you'll stall or jump ahead dangerously...let it out too slow and you'll melt your clutch. - Serial Stunter HELBENT4ELECTION

Question 2
My 1970 VW beetle will not start on cold mornings; what can I do?...

Answers
1)   adjust the valves, tune it up and make positive the choke is working - idontgivafork

2)   I'm not surprised.................... - Bumpkin

3)   Check the choke. Make sure it is closing when you turn the ignition on.
Change the fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor
Adjust the valves (do it before the engine has been started....you want the engine to be cold)
Make sure the boots on the intake manifold are not torn
check the carb base gasket and tighten the carb on the intake manifold
If the choke does not work, you can install a manual choke that hooks to a pull knob. - Rod Knocker

4)   Most likely the air cleaner if it is not the stock oil bath unit is rubbing on the automatic choke counterweight. A simple look will tell you. Just open the engine compartment lid and pull on the accelerator lever and watch just under the aircleaner on that side. You will see a doomahickey that needs to rotate when you first step on the pedal. That is the choke plate to cut off the excess cold air so your engine runs rich when it starts cold. Sometimes a slight tilting on the aircleaner will give you sufficient clearance. But you will have to figure out a way for that to be permanent.
Not valves, not coil, not plugs, not bad gas, not age. Just simple baling wire fixin - the Horses Butt

Question 3
motor problem vw passat 2003 help me?...  i was unscrewing the camshaft plug and my valve cover was off and alittle bolt fell in to the moter behind the chain or some thing and now to fetch it out i dont no wat to do and im stuck can anyone help 2003 vw passat 2.8 v6

Answers
1)   Pull off the valve cover and look into the motor with a flashlight and hope you can see it and get it with a magnet... Otherwise you'll have to pull the oil pan and hope it is in there. - loveracing1988

2)   if your even uncertain of where the bolt is you gotta get it out. If that bolt winds up in the timing belt, it's game over. I know because I have done that in the past. I was doing a timing belt and dropped a small bolt. I couldn't find it and looked all over. I looked for about an hour and gave up. I figured, "no way could it work it's way behind the timing covers". I was wrong. 2 days later the car showed up at the dealership and customer drove it in with a complaint of a "rattle". What an understatement. It sounded terrible. I got so lucky because the bolt was flopping around the timing belt gear. If you can't fish it out with a magnetic retreiever tool, then you gotta take the belts off and remove the timing covers to get it out. - runvws

3)   good luck, if u dnt have a magnet use a screwdrive with plenty greese on.. - shaywillfixit.

1)   check your brake fluid - billyandmillie

2)   You probably have water or air in your lines since the puddle. First check your brake fluid to see if its low, if it is than add some (important part), close the cap, pump the brakes and check the fluid again, repeat if needed. If the dont seem to be right, youll have to bleed all the lines. - Aaron M
