my 2001 jetta over heats wat could be wrong with it?

Question 1
my 2001 jetta over heats wat could be wrong with it?...

Answers
1)   Most likely a thermostat, and hopefully not a blown headgasket. - Travis A

2)   low on fluid or the thermostat is defective - Justin P

3)   it could be a blown head gasket or the thermostat or the thermostat housing as well alot of them are plastic and slowly melt over time I had that happen once before then again it could also be coolant levels or if its leaking coolant hope this helps - wolv3rine06

4)   Thermostat, water pump, coolant temp switch, plugged radiator, low on coolant because the tank leaked, the cap is bad and not holding pressure. All but the last are very common VW problems the last very seldom happens. - uthockey32

5)   I had the same problem recently with my volkswagan, i tried everything, a new radiator, flushing the system, a new thermostat, the only thing i didn't change was the water pump.
The problem was that the hot water would only get to the top cornor of the radiator and that was it, the water wouldn't flow through the system, but the heating matrix would get very hot, more so than it ever should.
Because i changed the thermostat for a brand new one, i assumed it couldn't possibly be that, but after weeks of driving me and my mechanic crazy he removed the thermostat and the problem was solved instantly, and the flow of water returned.
Now the engine doesn't overheat at all, in fact its cooler than it ever has been, the only down side isthat the in car heaters take longer than before to get hot, but i this this is a small price to pay for my engine being intact. - Carl

Question 2
Understanding my husband's 2007 volkswagen passat.?...  We have a 2007 passat...we just finished with the warranty and we don't want to go to the dealer for everything and spend tuns of money if we can do it at home, so I have a couple of questions about it.
1. If we want to change a light bulb...can we do it, without going to the dealership? Did someone changed that without any help?
2. Did someone changed the oil on it? Is it easy to do it, or you have to go again to the dealer?
3. Can we buy a book or something that can help with this things, and if yes, where? or a website where you can see how to do an oil change, etc?
Thank you all for helping us.
No haynes manual for this year.
Can you maybe explain a little bit? is easy? did you do it??? how? thank you for your answer.

Answers
1)   1. Yes. It's easy
2. Yes. It's easy
3. No book. But the factory manual on DVD: www.bentleypublishers.com - cant_think_of_1

2)   The best advise I could give, is to go to your local auto parts store or search online for a chiltons or haynes manual on your car. It will help in alot of ways, but take time to review the manual prior to doing repairs. No, it isn't that dificult to change the oil, but it is important to do it correctly. Hope this helps, Chris - Chris

3)   your best source of information www.vwvortex.com

free forums, just register, bunch of useful info, and many many vw and audi enthusiasts. - Oleg S

4)   1. Yes you can change a bulb. Just replaced my wifes Jetta bulb. Be careful not to touch the glass part on the bulb. The oil from your fingers will cause it to pop. [All modern cars that have high visibility headlamps use this type bulb now]. Must admit it did take some trial and error because I did not have a book , but I did it. I called dealer and found it cost $25 . Just out of curiosity I called a Honda dealership; guess what? They said $28 to change bulb in a Honda. So VW dealer is not all that bad.....
2.Yes you can change oil. If you have the 4 cyl. turbo engine [same as my 06 GTI] it has a plastic tray/panel that covers the engine underneath . It takes a Torx type of screwdriver to remove. Got my screwdriver at local parts store. For the actual filter and rubber grommet , I went to dealer. Got my oil at parts store too. VW recommends only high quality synthetic oil. Check you owners manual for oil viscosity 1st. I am not a mechanic but the job was not that difficult. As with everything else in life, the 2nd and 3rd time is much easier....Like most cars these days, each manufacturer makes special tools to facilitate oil changes, repairs, etc. VW does sell these and they do make the job much easier. [ I borrowed mine from a mech. friend] . Also you will need a set of ramps or a hydraulic jack to raise the car. Like all modern cars today, VWs are built low for aerodynamics, etc.
The filter and grommet was abt.$20. Oil [synthetic was $30.
I have been doing my own minor maintenance on our VWs for many years. However, I must admit 2 years ago I have been going to the Dealership. Why?
Because they only charge $80 for an oil change. I'm in and out in abt. an hour. I dont have to run around buying oil here, filter there, jack up the car, lay on the cold ground, get oily, etc. To me its worth $30 to let them do it.
Our VW dealer is competent, friendly, cost competive with other shops and best of all they treat me like a 'king'. I have never felt like I have spent 'tons of $$ ; they always do the job right the 1st time.
So thats my 2 cents worth..... - fenton

5)   does not matter if the book is not for this year. The cars are similar year after year. But get a repair manual. It answers all your questions. I go to the local library as there are various publishers(so you might like one book better than another....because it has more pictures and explains itself better.
And by checking out the various library books first you may decide you want in in particular. Go to the front counter in the library and ask them how are you suppose to find this book in a book store. They will show you the ISBN number and that is all you need. Book store or general automotive store.
Of course you realize you are slowly gonna have to invest in proper metric tools. - the Horses Butt

Question 3
is it easy to install a cd player into a 1999 vw beetle?...  like could best buy do it?

Answers
1)   i would think yes.
i actually have a '99 bug and mine was super easy.
but if you cant, ask a mechanic for help :] - Lesleh♥

2)   if u no what ur doin - Krystal

3)   I installed a cd player from a 2005 beetle factory cd player on a 1998 vw beetle. It fit perfectly! You can find a factory cd player on ebay. This is where i bought mine. You need special tools to take it out and you can also find this on ebay for like $3.00. You take out the old one and plug in the factory cd player. If you want to install an aftermarket on you have to pay someone who knows to install it. Some Best Buy stores do this. Otherwise it is very easy. - VW Man

4)   easy peasy if you know what your doing??? - Tim C

Question 5
VW New Beetle check engine light after putting high octane gas (93)?...  I was driving my girl friend's a 99 Beetle and decided to be nice fill up the tank with 93. After driving 5 miles the check engine light came on. Then later on when I was reading the manual it said 87 gas only.
What did i do and how do I fix this problem?
did i mess something up?

Answers
1)   You screwed up. Vehicles are meant to drive at peak performance at the octane rating there given. I'd go to an auto body shop without the vehicle. (or they will try to tell you its horrible and its ruined and you owe them $5000 or something ridiculous.) And simply ask i don't think it would be a huge problem it might be tricking the sensor into thinking somethings wrong as it's not burning properly but still ask in case the gas isn't the reason the light came on. - cupar

2)   I would double check the gas cap. you most likely did not tighten it down correctly. This is one of the most common CE Light problems. At least 2 or 3 times a week we have people coming in to our shop saying pretty much the same thing you just said, Put gas in it, now the check engine light is on. We remove the cap, tighten it down, in 5 miles the light turns off. Check that before you get really concerned. After that take it to an auto parts store and have them pull the codes. - gearnofear

3)   if you fill 93 you wont make your engine a mess. You have to check the check engine code in Auto Zone for free. Then you will know exactly what is the problem with your car. Right now it is hard to say anything with out the code. - VW Man

4)   No way you messed any thing up. Just check the gas cap. It has to click several times after you tighten it all the way.
My wife has a Jetta that says put 87 octane. Every once in a while, we put 93 in it. [For the cleaning detergents found in hi-test]. No problems. - fenton
