I have a 1996 Passat with about 200,000 miles. How long can I drive it with the mileage being so high?

The car works perfectly, drives like a dream, etc. but the mileage is a little high. Is there a maximum mileage before it starts having a lot of problems, etc.?

Dump it. It will not last that much longer.
URI (from Canada)

You can keep any car for as long as you like, as long as you maintain it well.
loaded_n_ready

I would assume the car is paid for. Keep driving it until it goes no more. I'm sure you have a cell phone, and as long as you don't take a lot of long trips I'd drive it until the wheels fall off it. But !!! The government is offering a $4500 rebate right now for clunkers. "Cash For Clunkers" rebate . Most of the car manufactures are offering 0% financing right now and have their own rebates. So now may be the time to get a new car if you're planning on buying one. Dealers are starving right now and will negotiate anything to move one off the lot, but you have to stand firm on making a good deal and walk away if they don't meet your price.
ouch

If you take care of a vehicle, there is no telling. If you took 10 engines from Volkswagen Passats and started then all up, ran them the same speed and never shut them off until they failed, they would all fail at different times. The acceptable tolerance of each piston weight in the engine falls within a certain range that is considered acceptable. But if you happen to get one where every piston was the exact same and the crankshaft balance quality was exact, The engine is going to last longer. Volkswagen has some of the tightest tolerances in the automotive industry. Clearances are in ten-thousandth of an inch increments when converted from the metric values used. SomVolkswagen engines run well over 300,000 miles before needing a rebuild or replacement.

You seem to be good at maintaining the car so congratulations. Things that normally start to wear out no matter how careful you are include low cost stuff like tires, brakes, batteries, and exhausts. That is normal wear and tear. The kind of stuff you are worried about is major engine and transmission wear. That really depends a lot on whether you drive a car really hard or on a lot of start and stop kind of trips. If you drive 100 miles a day on the freeway it will go farther than 10 miles a day on the local road. In other words, it is really hard to say how long it will last. At this point though, assuming the car is paid for, it really owes you nothing. I would start saving up for a newer car and be prepared to trade it in if it starts to cost more than $500 a year in repairs.

I drive only older high mileage cars and do a lot of work on them myself, including putting engines and transmissions in them as I need to, so I don't really worry about how many miles are on them. But I always keep an ear out for strange noises and keep an eye out for leaking fluids, these are always signs that something is going wrong.
howard

as long as u change the oil when it needs to be, and do all the maintenance. Ur car can last foreve, trust me ive seen cars with alot more millage and aslong as there unmolested and taken well care of it will last.

Is 60,000 miles a lot for a Winnebago?

I'm looking at buying a Winnebago and am wondering if having 60,000 miles on it is a lot?

It depends what year it is. If it's a 2008 and it has 60k, that's a lot. But if it's a 2000 and it has 60k, then it's not a lot.

The average CAR travels 14,000 miles/year.
60K is a lot for a 2008 but not for a 2000, They were made for travel.

What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?

I have a 1973 Volkswagen Standard Beetle. I can't remember for my life. It's pissing me off too since I know the engine so well I can assemble one in my sleep. When I buy a part, I just buy it for a 1973 46hp. I am almost sure it is 1600, am I right?

1600cc.
Trackerrrr

It might be. Or a 1500. Or a 1300. As all these engines fit into the car. You really won't know for sure until you pop off a head and measure the diameter of a pot.
I will toss you some numbers on cylinder bores
3.031in. = 1300
3.27 in. = 1500
3.36 in. = 1600
3.36 in. = 1600 Super
Advice: do these measurements "awake"
The stroke is the same on all.
The only difference between a std and a Super is that the Super has dual port heads. so the intake manifold splits into 2 passageways which is easily seen in the engine compartment as you look toward the spark plug area.
Here are some other numbers for more accuracy(just for you)
1300: HP 50-4600 RPM
1500: HP 53-4200 RPM
1600: HP 57-4700 RPM(1970)
1600: HP 60-4400 RPM(Super) carbed.

Now you may not want to go and rip a head off.(I don't). Look at the numbers on the float bowl of the carb. Chances are if it was a complete motor swap the carb would have remained with the accompanying engine rather than swapped.
On the bowls in the casting
30PICT1 -1300
30PICT 2 - 1500
30PICT3 - 1600
34PICT3- 1600Super
But there is no guarantee there either.
And as you are walking in with the 46hp engine order on a 73 car, it is up to the parts guy to determine what to give you.
And 46 hp fits closer to the 1300cc line of engine.
You got the smallest engine that can be fitted into that car. A good motor yes, for dune buggies especially. I would opt for the 1600. So keep your eyes peeled(use a sharp knife) and your ears to the ground(sliced off by the sharp knife)for something "floating around". There should be scads of them.
My Work Here is Finished

1600 is about right if it is the orig. engine. Except for the cylinders and pistons there is no practical difference in the engine when you buy routine parts.

ca_surveyor

Hi, If you have the original engine, it is 1600CC like you thought.
The HP doesn't sound right though. I am pretty sure it is more powerful than that!
howard

"...I am almost sure it is 1600, am I right?" --YES you are.

Your engine number probably lies between
AF 0,000,802 - AF 0,036,768
delivers 46bhp(DIN)
and is a 1600cc

Edit
If the vehicle contains the standard egine with which it was fitted then for 1973 model period 1 Aug 72 to 31 July 73.

Then it must be the 1600 AF motor which was fitted in 1972 - 73. This motor was not fitted standard after July 73

Chassis 113,2000,001 - 113,3200,000

With the following improvements/changes
Reduced horsepower in US models (60 to 58 SAE).
600 watt (50 amp) alternator replaces generator in mid year.
Improved intake pre-heating for faster cold weather warm-up.
Engine case near No3/flywheel is reinforced to prevent cracking.
Softer transmission mounting.
Softer clutch.
Porsche style pressure plate.
No oil drain plug in oil strainer cover plate.
New fuel pump (with cut-off valve) to clear alternator.
Paper air filter.
New ‘lifetime lubricated' front and rear wheel bearings.
Larger curved windscreen and smaller front lid to luggage compartment.
New dash in super beetle.
Redesigned fresh air system.
New interior light assembly.
Stronger bumpers.
Large round (Elephant Foot) tail lights.
‘Sports Bug' option.
New front seats with multiple adjustment.
Outer door handles get ‘two finger' indents on trigger.

on the case, just under the genny stand, the engine number is stamped.

it will start with 2 letters - these letters denote which engine you have.

since all the air cooled range use the same basic case, any engine couldbe fitted from a 1200 beetle to a 2000cc T4!

Codes beginning - Engine size - Single or Twin port
D 1200cc S/P
F 1300cc S/P
AB 1300cc T/p

B 1600cc S/P

another way to find out is if the engine is stripped the use the formula bore x bore x stroke x 0.00314

ok i need this car soo bad but i have NO money.. =[ help meee?

ok well i found this really cool car it's a orange 1972 VW beetle and it only costs $3000... the only problem is that my parents said i can't get a job so i can't get the money for it?!! is there ANY other way to get the money that i need.. and quickly.. i was think selling things on ebay but i don't know how it works..=[

i doubt you have enough stuff you want to sell on ebay to get that car and by the time you made the money, the car would be gone...you're screwed, just let it go, there will be more cars.

get money
school girl

øhh... GET A JOB!!!

or ask your parents if they can buy it and you pay it back somehow
Bergi

ok this will only work if you have a defined skill,, like painting o something. what you do is find a website that pays you money for your talent for example my partner is a photographer and he got £330 for selling his photo on this site. i cant remeber what its called but it really works and it how my partner began making thousands of pounds every week......

gd luck

hope it goes well
GRACE

Well, To open a account on Ebay you have to have a Credit Card, you do not have to be 18 exactly, but you could share you parent's credit card WITH their permission. Selling things to keep track. But you must sell a lot of things to get 3000 bucks... I don't see why you are not allowed to get a job.. not even part-time? When i say that I mean "super part time" maybe babysitting or something??
Alexandra

I totally know how you feel. I've waited for a lot longer than you have for my first car. Which I'm actually getting tomorrow and I'm 21 (there's other things that needed to come first before my car). But my mom wouldn't let me get a job because she knew she was the one going to be picking me up. So I babysat for forever, then I had gotten a nanny job for 2 families and I've finally have saved up enough money for my own car. It's a 1973 vw bug, my dream car. Literally. I've seen many many of cars that I have had my eye on and it just never seemed to work out as well as I hoped for. But I've been patient enough to wait for the right moment and it's finally arrived. So just because of an impulse buy don't go and sell everything in your room just for this car. Wait on it, the right one will come along. Trust me. Good luck!

You could save your money and work jobs like:lawn mowing(I did that plenty of times), babysit, help someone move, walk dogs, clean houses, tend to older people who is needing the service, or just to hang out with them for company, do chores around the house to show your parents your mature, stand on the side of the road with a sign and a bucket, join a company for part time handing out fliers or hold signs for them, wash friends and families cars, help someone with there gardening/planting an such, hope some of these are helpful to you! Again good luck.

Did Hitler invent the Volkswagen?

i've seen it all online so just confirming with others

Yup, 1st model was the beetle.

hell no

No. He directed porsche to develop a peoples car. Only thing Hitler did was propagate hate. During the war the vw factory produced military vehicles. Production of the beetle began after the war
convexed

All I know is his car of Choice was the VW Thing
tigerguy_tbear

He did not invent the VW

The answer is no. Here is a brief history of the VW Beetle which will answer your question and put the role of Hitler in perspective.
------------
In the early 1930's, Ferdinand Porsche and his company Dr.-Ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche GmbH designed a prototype of the Beetle Car. It was a streamlined sedan with a rear engine so that the driveshaft would be shorter, whilst the weight of the engine would still be distributed safely. This prototype was built by a motorcycle producer called Zundapp and test driven in 1932. It did not go into production though because Zundapp decided to keep making motorcycles as they were in high demand.

Adolf Hitler at this time had a vision of his countrymen being able to own a cheap car and had plans on creating great networks of roads called autobahns. Hitler invited Porsche to submit to him a design for this peoples car, it had to be cheap, economical, fast (all of 60 miles per hour) and to accommodate two adults and three children comfortably. So, in January 1934 Porsche gave Hitler a proposal for his car and by June that year work had begun. Some funding was given by the RDA (Reichsverband der Autmobilindustrie - the German Auto Dealers Association), to help pay the bills!
--------------------

NOTE:

1. The design of the Beetle has been credited to others such as Béla Barényi. See extract below from

http://www.f1db.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4616

"The case was finally decided in the Patent court in Mannheim in late 1954: The decision was clear - Béla Barényi invented the basic concept of the Volkswagen before Ferdinand Porsche."

2. It should also be noted that "...the Beetle's technical design seems to have been heavily lifted from the Czech auto company Tatra's head designer, Hans Ledwinka; Porsche later admitted to "looking over his shoulder" and VW had to pay Tatra a settlement in the 50s or 60s."

diesel

I've always used super in my 1.8T because it's better for the turbo than the regular.

It's a turbo car, so it needs premium.

I'm buying a 1973 vw bug, can anyone tell me..?

Hey there everyone! I am buying my first car this Sunday and it's a 1973 vw bug. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I know a bit about the history but not much. A classic vw bug has been my dream car since I first layed eyes on a picture of my uncles when he was a lot younger, and I feel in love in that moment. My dad had one as well. I am now 21 years old and able to buy the car of my dreams. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I've heard there good reliable cars and all but I would like to know more. Can anyone help me? Any thing would be appreciated. Advice, maintainace issues, things to look out for, comments about them, even stories of when you had a bug back on the day or even now. I love it all! Thanks everyone and I'm looking forwards to learning more about my bug and the stories people have to share!

Also the car is painted red and white. The body is red but the hood is white. Do you think they did that since white reflects the sun and it maybe keeps it cooler? Just a thought. Thanks again everyone!
Thanks! And yes I'm having my bf go with me since he has ownership with his best friend in Cali over a bug they rebuilt in high school. Also it's a 3 hr drive up there and we have a friend who's a mechanic an will be going as well so them two and look at it. While I look at the inside. haha. But I'll let him know about the hammer thing if he doesn't already know. :)

take someone who knows beetles inside and out.

there are some really bad rust buckets out there.

listen for unusual clonking from the engine. they are noisy anyway.
take a small hammer and knock at all the panels underneath to check for rust.
being a 73 it could be Torsion or mac strut. avoid Mac strut
avoid semi auto

but the best way is to contact a local club and see if anyone can look at the car for you
Gavin R

My first car was a 1969 Powder blue Beetle.

Like any car, if you take care of it, it will last for a long time. The only issue I ever had with mine was Leaking from the sun roof and the heater sending in exhaust fumes..

So when you test drive, make sure to turn on the heater and see if it blows clean hot air...exhuast fumes could mean a leak somewhere...Open the engine compartment and look at the area where the battery sits, this will rust easily...also, look under the carpet for rust...especially if this is an east coast car where they salt the roads....Take a small magnet with you. Beetles are metal. If you put the magnet on the front fender for example and it doesn't stick it's been replaced, possibly because of an accident. Fiberglass fenders would be better than fixing it with bondo.... Do that on all 4 corners..
evaohell

Im going to give you a link on "how to buy a beetle". I used it to buy my 1969, my 1967, and my 1964 (which I still own). These car are fun to drive, fun to work on, and do draw the occasional "I had a 19XX bug and I remember..." Keep in mind though this, this car needs twice the amount of attention than modern day vehicles, BUT at half the cost. Example, a brake job on a 1999.5 jetta (that we just got rid of) cost 900 total. That included labor, changing pads, and rotors. A brake job that was done on my 1967 (new drums, shoes, brake springs, and labor) that was roughly 500. The only thing is this though, you need to adjust the brakes every 3000 miles because they don't self adjust. That is one example. Another example is this, you need to change the oil and top off fluids every 3000 miles on a modern car. On a bug, you need to:

1. Clean spark plugs
2. Lube the carb linkage
3. change the oil
4. Adjust the valves
5. Lube the chassis
6. Adjust the brakes
7. Clean/replace fuel filter (if equipped)
8. Adjust/check timing
9. Adjust/check idle
10. Adjust/check fan belt

If you do this though with your B/F, you will have a understanding and a great time working on the bug. Not to mention, parts are plentiful, interchangeable (mostly) and cheap. The reliability of these cars is outstanding. Many of these cars are on the road today which should serve as a testament to how they are.

As for the hood, it was replaced at one time. Not uncommon with bugs. If its your dream car, go for it. You'll hear that that maybe unsafe, they are unreliable by today standards, blah blah blah. Its like comparing apples to oranges. Bugs are completely safe. I can speak for myself when someone t-boned me when they ran a light, and my 69 saved me. I was hit so hard I spun 180*. It still started up and could drive, but the body damage would not let me. Here is the link:

http://www.vw-resource.com/buying.html

Also favorite the website, its a repair site for any beginner. Also pick up a copy of "how to keep your VW alive" by John Muir. You'll love it.
