Would It be possible to take on the task of restoring a 72' VW beetle, At 12 and 13 years old?

Question 1
Would It be possible to take on the task of restoring a 72' VW beetle, At 12 and 13 years old?...  I got little money but the car is in pretty decent shape The engine to it is in pieces in my barn I have little experience with engines but I also got places that will build it for me, I want a project that me and my bro can do, And I got that old car. It don't mean much, and its in fairly good shape all it needs is, moderate interior work, A new engine, and new brakes. and of course rewiring it. But as far as Rewiring my dad could do that, everything else I have some knowledge of and I can probably figure it out if I need to I got about 50 differnt detailed manuals on how to do just about anything you need to know about on a car, Plus a imports and foreing manual for out of country cars like the Beetle. So would you say its possible?

Answers
1)   For sure dude, i say do it ! - mr VR6

2)   Of course! Anything is possible. Let me take my hat off to you son, for wanting to take on what seems like a daunting task. There is not an easier, more self explained vehicle to learn basic automotive than a VW bug. A good VW manual is all you need. Some tools and basic ambition.
Which you obviously have. You and your brother will walk away with allot more than just a restored old car. Good Luck in your endeavors. - dewhatulike

3)   You should definitely go for it. I have an '84 VW Rabbit that I'm working on restoring with my brother too, and I'm not much older that you are. It might seem like a lot of work, but I've seen some of the cars that my brother and his friends have brought back to life, and it's sooooo worth the effort. Maybe if you put a good turbo-charger in it and mega-squirt engine, you can race it in autocross. That's what I'm gonna do when my car is all fixed up. It's really fun too. I've been in the passenger seat in two different cars (one was a '69 Firebird) with my brother's friends and it's a very exhilarating experience. If your'e a careful driver, and you're not scared, I would definitely look into doing autocross when you're old enough to drive. - xxcricketshardxx

4)   yes but i thought you would want to modify it. dont be offended when i say the 72 isnt sort after as a restored car compared to the earlier bugs. but while the car is in bits its a good time to paint or chrome things or both before reassembly www.geneberg.com to help you find the engine bits - gooseboy78

5)   Hey Nurtle,

I'm with the other guys on this one. This is definitely something you and your brother can tackle. With a good manual and a decent set of hand tools you can take apart just about anything on an older beetle.

Only "specialty" tools you might need would be a torque wrench, floor jack and jack stands.But... Don't EVER support a car on anything BUT properly positioned, properly rated set of jack stands! and don't EVER support a car on a hydraulic jack alone! A properly rated fire extinguisher is also a very good idea. Don't know how to use one? LEARN HOW, LEARN NOW! WORK SAFE!

Costco sells a pretty comprehensive tool set in a blow-mold case for around $100. It has SAE and Metric tools and the case makes it a LOT easier to inventory your tools when you get through for the day. They're made by Crescent and I've been using such a set for a few years now. Only tools that broke on me were due to abuse.

When you get to the engine and brakes? Make sure you have a spotlessly clean work area.Dirt in an engine or in a brake system can ruin all your hard work in a big hurry. I'd get some old clothes, coveralls work well, for when you're working on the car. Be sure not to track grease or oil back inside either or your Mom will have a fit! So clean up BEFORE you go back inside. And remember to WIPE YOUR FEET! Your Mom will thank you for it.

Some other things I've learned? If something has you really frustrated, can't figure it out? TAKE A BREAK! Remember to get plenty of rest and remember to EAT!

Can't tell you how many times remembering those simple things has saved me time and money in the long run.

Good place to look for more resources, forums, parts etc. The Samba or thesamba.com

Have fun guys! - Jim

Question 2
I have 1974 Volkswagen Beetle. I used the water pressure to clean the dirty engine out.?...  What if I use the water pressure to clean the diry engine then what happen?

Answers
1)   I do hope you mean clean the outside. Just be careful not to get any water into the electrical or fuel system. You would do well to use an engine cleaning product according to the container directions for the best results.@eduardo...you are obviously not a mechanic. - Otto

2)   what do you mean by water pressure?
there's a way to clean a car's cylinders with water, you get a spray bottle and fill it with warm water, and
start the car, and remove the air filter and spray the water in the intake. keep spraying regularly, but not too fast. keep doing this and it will clean your cylinders.

just remember, don't pour water or spray too fast - Eduardo S

3)   i really hope you're talking about the outside of the block. but you'd be much better off just picking up some engine de-greaser from a parts store, a whole bottle is less than $5. spraying a hose inside your engine compartment is never a good idea, especially if you hit the distributor. - James Dean

4)   I used to pressure wash my engine with a steam pressure hose and some nasty acid you put in the soap to burn off the old oil and dirt and some uncovered skin also. What I learned is to let it dry. but before that even ,pop the distribute cap off. Let it thoroughly dry out. Otherwise the moisture in the cap, if left wet will not let your car start. The pressure wash will destroy any paper heater hoses and will deteriorate over time the cloth covering on the fuel lines and other tubing in and around the engine, But, otherwise, I had no problems - dewhatulike

Question 3
Volkswagen Golf 2010 parts help!!?...  i have had this car for a long time, i need headlights, front bumper cover. And the dealer prices are outrageously expensive! and i cant find any after market parts. PLEASE if you know any after market parts or used please tell me thanks
its a 2-door, 2.5l, 5-speed, automatic,regular gas golf.

Answers
1)   You can reduce the cost of the front bumper cover by purchasing a "rebuilt" cover; many insurance companies will not pay for a new cover unless that's all that is available. Rebuilt covers are those bumper covers that have had cracks or whatever repairs so that when they are installed and painted to match you cannot tell that it is a "rebuilt or re-manufactured" part. Ask a local body shop for a reference for a bumper exchange company in your area. A word of caution; don't use an aftermarket mounting pad for the bumper, most fit poorly and studies have shown that they often don't meet the original factory standards for impact resistance and/or fit. This is not a place to try and save a couple of dollars.

Most likely your headlight assemblies are made by Hella; Hella does sell parts in the aftermarket as replacement parts, usually for 25% to 40% less than the VW retail price for the same part. I have seen some of these parts have the area where the VW logo is normally showing, filing marks are found to erase the VW logo!

Because of potential conflicts, I will not recommend any specific brands or places to obtain these parts. However, you can go to a local breaker's yard (salvage yard) and most have computer link ups to search for used parts for your vehicle. You might even ask them to find a bumper cover in the colour you need; once, I had a search done looking for a bumper cover in silver for a vehicle and one was found at the right price so I didn't have to paint the used part! Be aware because your vehicle is a Mark VI Golf, used parts won't be that easy to find and they will command top dollar. My guess is that for used parts for a MK VI Golf, you'll have to pay close to 50% of the dealership list price!

Hope this helps, a car nut. - a car nut

2)   2.5lt 2010 golf ! WTF ? what country was that released in ? - mr VR6

3)   To MrVR6. The 2.5 is available in the Golf in the USA. I wouldn't be to upset about not getting it where you are, it's not a great engine. You'r better off with the 2.0T or even the 2.0TDI. - vavavoom

4)   WOW! You have had it such a long time, maybe a year at most! Answering your question, use the web. - djaca70
