Question 2
1998 VW Jetta problems going into reverse (5 speed)?...  I have a 98 jetta i bought. Its got 97k mi and has the 2.0 engine with a 5 speed. It drives fine in all forward gears, but when I go to put it into reverse it engages and when I start to let off of the clutch it pops out and grindes. If I hold it in reverse I can drive backwards without it grinding. Wondering if it could be a linkage issue and if so how would I go about checking it to properly diagnose what's going on? Thanks!

Answers
1)   ha - B

2)   It does sound like a linkage issue. The only way to really know is too lift it up and pull down your clutch assembly from there you need to pull it apart and see what is going on. If you don't know much about clutches then I would recommend taking it in. Your probably looking at a couple hundred to get it fixed. - Jared

3)   this is what happens when your reverse "synchro" goes out. thats what lets the gears mesh harmoniously, its not a big deal for reverse but you will always have to hold it in place or it will pop out. rebuild the transmission or replace. - imnessa

4)   Yup it's a linkage issue, but don't worry, it's a common issue on mk3 VWs, my 1996 Jetta had the same problem. Just hold your hand on the shifter while you back up. Since you spend such small amounts of time in reverse it's really not worth fixing. - Nick

Question 3
My T4 Transporter gears start to stick if i drive over 70mph for long periods of time. Any ideas?...  The Gears change fine at all other times. This problem only occurs during motorway driving

Answers
1)   Check the fluid levels in the transmission. - Old Man Dirt

2)   Check the oil. - Fred Smith

3)   Sounds like the gear box oil is over due to be changed, this can also cause 1st and reverse in particular hard to engage sometimes. - Alan

4)   Hey Ross,
You don't say what year this is but the other answers you got are a good place to start, check the transmission oil and if you don't know when it was changed last? CHANGE IT.

Might also want to check and lube all the shift linkage and I do mean ALL of it. You've got over 6 feet of connections, shift rods, linkages, mounts etc. going from front to back and if any of it's loose or binding? That can cause all kinds of problems.

Good luck! - Jim

Question 4
VW Bus MPG, comfort, room...............................................................?...  What kind of MPG can you expect from a 1965-1975 VW Bus? I'm considering one for my family? Are they comfortable? How much leg room do you get in the front and second rows? Is there a third row? I've never ridden in one, but my friend has one and LOVES it. He says it's really nice, but I'd like some more opinions. Thanks!

Answers
1)   do you like working on cars? Do you have the tools, the know-how and the time to take care of a 30-40 year old vehicle? Comfort, room, and MPG's are the least of your worries if you think a vw bus is a good car for your family. They are dangerously slow, the brakes and suspension leave quite a bit to be desired, and no, they typically don't get good mileage for how small their engines are. Just get a minivan, you wannabe hipster. - Dude

2)   Plenty of room. My 6' 4" buddy drove a split window for years.
There are many different floor plans for the old bus. Some have 3 rows of seats and some don't. Some are campers and some are panel walls with no back seats.
Look on thesamba.com to get an idea of price and availability.
As far as MPG, a good tuned bus with a 1700cc will get 25 mpg.
AN old bus will require a little more work than the average car, but if you keep up on it, it will run forever. Maybe an extra 1/2 hour every other month to adjust the valves (real easy once you do it once).
As far as the brakes, it is easy to install 2 wheel disk brakes to make it stop great. The stock drum brakes work great too as long as you adjust them when you do the oil and valves.
I drive a 1973 VW Thing daily by choice (I have 4 or so other cars I could drive) - Rod Knocker

3)   Hey Calvin,
I'd consider the VW as more a second vehicle and not a daily driver. Yes the VW vans are great fun and have a lot of room. But... The 65-75 vans were really short on amenities( usable heater, defroster, no air conditioning, no cruise control to name a few) and not all that great on gas. They're also notoriously under powered and not anywhere near as safe as minivans made today. They are far more susceptible to cross winds and can be a real handful to drive.

Finding one in that age range in decent shape is possible. But it will come at a premium price. And being a "vintage" vehicle it will ALWAYS need some kind of repair and upkeep. If you're the least bit mechanically challenged it can end up costing you a bundle to maintain. And sadly, there are fewer and fewer really good air-cooled mechanics out there.

On the plus side they do seem to hold their value pretty well BUT... Only if you start out with one that's in good shape to begin with and put in the time effort and $$ to keep it up.Parts are still readily available with a few exceptions. There aren't a lot of electronics so it's a much simpler vehicle to maintain and repair and there are a lot of repairs you can do yourself if you're at all handy with tools.

Good place to start looking, if you're still interested is The Samba or thesamba.com
Most people there are enthusiasts and pretty up front about what they have for sale and maintaining the integrity of the board. There are also some pretty useful forums. I'd be leery of anything advertised in your local paper or on Craigslist.

Anything you are considering purchasing? Make sure you have it checked out fully by a knowledgeable VW mechanic before you make any deals.

I've owned several VW's over the years and I have a fondness for the Westfalia "Camper" version. It's the "Swiss Army Knife of vehicles. I've gone places and done things that a lot of 4X4's have trouble going. And what efficiency apartment do you know of that gets 18-20MPG? But... I've also been a mechanic for over 40 years and worked on VW's for most of that time.
Volkswagens can be a real pain in the a$$ from time to time, but I've never had one leave me completely stranded. - Jim

Question 5
Can I drive my car as Darth Vader would?...  Would it be illegal for me to drive my car with my Darth Vader Voice Changing Helmet on? Is there some kind of law prohibiting people to drive with their face concealed?

Answers
1)   bad idea for two reasons. if you can not hear every thing and see every thing around you, it is not safe. if you are wearing anything like that, out of the normal, you are a distraction for other drivers and not safe to drive like that. - mdk68gto, ase certified m tech

2)   There are laws in most states that make it illegal to obstruct your view in any way.

Also, in many states now, it's illegal to drive while "distracted" by anything. This applies mostly to cell phones and radios, but could be easily applied to your Star Wars helmet.

Besides that, any officer could cite you for unsafe or reckless driving if they believe wearing this thing is a safety issue, and just about any officer would. It's a serious charge that would be taken before a judge automatically, and you can bet anything that the judge would agree with the officer. - brien

3)   legally yes. but if you get in a wreck, your fault or not, because of visibility issues, your gonna buy a some lucky guy a new car. and youll look like a dumb ass. grow up - imnessa
