5)   Remove the head. Have it skimmed, Clean off any dirt grime or carbon from the piston faces, clean the mating area on the engine block. Obtain a new gasket and stretch bolts. Re fit the head and torque down to the specified torque. Re fit a new cam belt and tensioners( I believe it is an OHC engine) ensure all settings are correct in relation to cam/piston/crank position. Refill with fresh coolant, check everything once more and start up.Change the oil and filter after you are happy everything is running correctly and there are no leaks. - L G

VW Passat Trendline Mk5 (2004) Air Con Problem?...  The air con is not as cold as it should be and vw dealer has not come up with any answers. They are predicting a cost of £1800 but they haven't said what is wrong. Are there no diagnostics in the air con system? I am aware the air con cooler fan by the radiator is not working. Air is still cool but not cold. Has anyone got any ideas!

1)   That fan must work when it is supposed to. It is what takes the heat out of the condenser. Without it the air con will never get cold.
You need to have that diagnosed and repaired first. No way it should cost L1800 unless they know what it is.

There are no real onboard diagnostics for this system aside from the pressure switches which can be monitored.
Most of the time it's better to moniter the pressures with exterior gauges then compare them with sensor data.

If the fan doesn't work the pressures will be wrong and the air con will remain cool not cold.

3)   There are plenty of independent Air con specialists about who can diagnose the problem. The system is not unlike your central heating system at home but in reverse. I have relatives in South Africa and you can visit a "man in a van" at the road side who can repair your AC very cheaply, we are a little behind in UK despite many cars having had AC for well over 12 years. - L G

4)   If you want your air con fixed cheaper see as independent air con specialist, The possible cause of the radiator fan not working properly is due to a Faulty pressure switch that controls the fan to cycle on and off. I would also have them check the gas pressure etc the usually cost of checking etc is around £80

Smoke my tail lights..?...  What's the best/cheapest way to smoke my tail lights, side markers, and the blinkers on the side panels on my 2001 MK4 Jetta?

1)   I'm sure they sell smoked lens for that stuff. The tail light if you want to keep stock but just smoked you can have them tinted. You can tint all that stuff if you didn't want to hunt down smoked side markers and blinkers. I've never tried personally but I know people tint headlights, tail lights, and marker lights. - ChevyPride0310

2)   You can buy a spray tin and do it yourself. Its a bit 90 's though ! - L G

3)   Go 2 a spare parts place and buy a couple of cans of VHT night shades, its a spray on tint.... maybe get your boyfriend or brother or someone to do it for you - Chloe's Dad

4)   Yes you can smoke anything on your car that you want. However, each police jurisdiction may or may not have specific values that you can "darken" the lens to.

In my locality, I have seen many a "ricer" pulled over and ticketed for improper lenses.
