Good or bad decision?

Question 1
Good or bad decision?...  Just got a 1999 vw passat.
93,000 miles.
i have one person saying this was a bad decision adn the car will go in about 20,000 miles( which i hope isnt true) and another telling me it wasnt a bad move.
so .... good or bad decision?
Car seems to be in good condition. has brand new tires, handles well, sounds great, and except for a few minor scratches is in excellent condition
Sputhern car too, no rust

Answers
1)   Depends on the overall condition of the car. Really, who can predict when a car will "go". - smoke20rules

2)   If the car was well cared for it should last for many more miles than you were told. The bad part is that any part that you may need is going to cost more than if it were for a more common vehicle. Volkswagen likes to make changes to the vehicles they build every couple years which makes the parts too specific for each model and makes it harder to get anything for them. If you have any issues with the car you need to be prepared to order and wait for the part to arrive. Hope I have been helpful. - king_davis13

3)   If it's an automatic, it's a bad decision. It WILL "go" long before the rest of the car. - Nick

4)   Passats are horrible. They've always been horrible. - Hank Scorpio

5)   I doubt that there is a car maker in the world who's cars will not do at least 150k provided they are properly serviced. I have a VW Golf car in Europe with 124k, it uses no oil runs sweet transmission great. My neighbour recently sold his Passat with 132k miles bought a Ford which was months old, sold it after 4 months because it kept breaking down ! - L G

Question 2
Can the dealership do this?...  I purchased my car from this dealership back in September. Everything went well, I drove the car home that night, I received all receipts for the down payment etc. The dealership is now calling stating I owe them the down payment and that they are repoing the car in the morning and having me arrested for fraud. I have the receipts showing I paid and they are claiming they are fake. What do I do?
Yes I showed them the receipt and it was paid with cash and debit. I have the card statement for the day they removed the funds they are saying they contacted my bank, they contacted the wrong bank!!
the dealership is stating they will void the contract although the loan is through the bank, they will tell the bank I didn't pay the down payment even though my contract is signed and states I paid the down payment.

Answers
1)   If you have paperwork with signatures from the authorized party at the dealership as well as proof of the down payment (check stub, receipt, etc) you should be okay. I would suggest possibly contacting your local police department and see if there is anything else they could suggest.

Also if you paid the down payment via check are you sure that the money cleared your account? - doginneed

2)   show them the receipts, even though they say they are fake have they seen em? isnt it a little late to be asking for the down payment anyway? if i'm correct you have to have a down payment of some value before you even drive off the lot not unless they have some no down payment sale or somethin. but even if, they're not goin to advertise No Down Payment Until Two Months Later?? thats stupid - Mark

3)   Okay, firstly, I advise that you contact some form of legal assistance; i.e., lawyer, barrister etc. depending upon where you reside.

If you are in the US, your lawyer can advise, but, I think you need to file a complaint with the new car dealership licensing board in regards to this matter. Every state has some sort of agency that deals with New Car dealership business licensing rights and this is a matter for them to take up.
I am not a lawyer, nor, can I give you legal assistance of any sort. However, it is very important (in my opinion) that you contact a lawyer right away to protect your credit history and other legal rights

I wish you well, a car nut.. - a car nut

4)   Mail the General Manager via Certified Mail, Receipt Requested, w/ copies of all your documentation.

Tell them succinctly in a firm, professional manner [this letter might be used in court] you expect a retraction of their clearly erroneous allegations in 5 business days or you will be forced to take the issue to court.

If they persist in this they'l end up owing you, maybe a lot.

Some states have small claims limits, the max you can sue for, upto $25k, some are $10k to $12k.

If you called your state banking commish, they'd prob put a stop to this.

If you dint, and the dealer continued, they'd likely end up owing you $$$.

Know your rights, be relentless, and you'l likely profit. - Karl Kern

Question 3
2001 VW Jetta Heater Not Blowing Hot Air?...  My heater is not working. It is only blowing cold air. What could be the problem? and anyone know how much roughly it will cost to have it repaired?

Answers
1)   Check ya water level first, if that's ok the heater matrix could be blocked.
You will see two black rubber pipes that go from the engine to the bulkhead (the wall between the engine bay and the passenger compartment)

Remove these pipes and put a garden hose on one of the two pipes going into the bulkhead and check to make sure water comes out the other one. then put the garden hose on the other pipe and back flush it to get any bits out. Keep going back and forth until no more bits come out and put the rubber pipes back on.

Top up with coolant and try it then. - Max

2)   My chrystal ball is telling me you are low on engine Coolant. You have a leak...on the drivers side of the engine...from a plastic water outlet flange that has coolant hoses attached to it. The shop will charge you $224.42 after tax. - Watson

3)   Did it happen all at once?
Have you checked the coolant level?
Do the hoses get hot to the radiator?

If everything seems ok and you still get no heat, then it is probably the heater valve. Have some one operate the switch while you watch the heater valves open and close.

If the hoses never get hot enough, even though the fluid is full, then it is probably a thermostat broken open. Replace the thermostat under the waterpump housing. - Motorhead

4)   It may be an airlock. Run the car to normal temperature and then turn the engine off. Carefully feel the bottom of the radiator from under the bonnet. (Be very careful as the cooling fan can come on) If the bottom of the radiator is cool or cold you have an airlock. You should turn the heater control to the maximum red section, check the coolant level is correct and then slightly loosen the header tank cap. Start the engine and let it idle, hopefully as the system is not pressurising the air lock will come out. If this does not work you can retighten the header tank cap and try loosening a hose clip to allow air out that way. Its the same principle as bleeding a central heating radiator. - L G

Question 4
how to change out the windshield on a 1972 vw beetle?...  do i need to cut out the rubber piece around the window to get the window out!

Answers
1)   My advise is to have a glass shop such as Safelite auto glass do the job for you. I know that the rubber is not to be cut, but a tool used to pry the glass out. With the vintage of your auto a new rubber will probably be needed. - Poppy

2)   That's the easiest way as the old rubber is so dried out you'll never get the new glass in with it, new gaskets are relatively cheap. I take it you've never done one before, humm.. all's I can say is be careful , Ive seen a lot of people break there new glass upon install, then they end up coming back to me to buy a new one and have me install it for $50 bucks. almost sounds cheaper in the long run doesn't it? heres some tips if your brave enough.
http://www.mamotorworks.com/acvw-1-0-9420.html - Buster

3)   do dont cut the rubber. you are going to need 2 people to do it though. get on the inside of the car and start working the rubber down from the top center with your fingers while pushing out on the glass near where you are pulling the rubber down. eventually the glass will start to push out at that spot. have a buddy on the outside to hold the glass so it doesnt fall. once you get in started its easy to come out, just work around from where you started.

putting it back in takes more patience and is harder. put the rubber seal around the glass in the groove it goes in. then you will need a long piece of 14 gauge wire. put the wire in the inside groove that the metal of the window would sit in.

actually its hard to explain....heres a video i found on youtube thats really good - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

Question 5
did they ever sell the old vw rabbits mk1s in the us with round lights?...  all i ever see is the old box light rabbits also who designed the rabbit and is he or she still alive

Answers
1)   Yes they did! They also made them in the GTI version with the 4 round headlights. Giorgetto Giugiaro was the designer of the car. - Scott W

2)   the box-style headlights are found on the later Mk1 Rabbits from 1980-1984, but the older ones have the circular euro-style headlights. i have an '81 Mk1 Rabbit with the box lights, and i'm considering doing a swap soon. it's not a hard swap, but you need to replace the entire grille, headlights, and all the front sheetmetal(everything bolts right in/out).

the designer of the Mk1 VW(Rabbit in the US, Golf in Europe) was Georgetto Guigaro, who also designed such cars as the Maserati Ghibili, Ferrari 288 GTO, and the DeLorean. yes, he's still alive and well.

for some additonal info, the Mk1 was also made in South Africa up until 2009... - Richard Ramirez

3)   Its funny you should ask this question. The box type lights were for the US market and were coveted in UK and Europe where we had the round lights. It is so strange that the reverse would seem to apply in the US ! I had a 1982 Scirocco GTI and indeed it had the four square headlights which did create some interest amongst Scirocco owners at the time. - L G
