VW is all set to enter the predominant small car market of India with there offering “Polo” .The car has been introduced with the 1.2-litre three-pot petrol and the 1.2-litre diesel engine options. Available in three trims – Trendline, Comfortline and Highline – deliveries for the petrol engined version of the car will begin in March. It will be a while before the diesel version of the Polo hits the streets however – deliveries for the Polo TDi will begin only in May.
The car looks good and very impressive from the outside with clean and simple design, Yet from the outside it gives the big car feel. But when inside it doesn’t seem very big , once you are inside you will feel that you are in small car . The fit and finish of the car is not very great but not bad too . The quality of material could have been better.
As far as the specifications of the car goes like this..
The petrol variant of the VW Polo is equipped with a 1.2 litre engine with an output of 75HP @ 5400 rpm and a maximum torque of 110NM @ 3750 rpm.The diesel variant is also equipped with the 1.2 litre engine with an output of 75HP @ 4200 rpm and torque of 180 NM @ 2000 rpm.

3)   I trust German Engineering excellence.
I'd go for VW Polo 1.2 L. Prices are comparable! - tvl

4)   yes
Volkswagen Polo is a very Good car.. . . - saket

5)   The VW is better. Hyundai scores a lead in terms of service network. The other thing is that i20 is little spacious then VW polo. But when you see performance and engine, VW takes the lead. - Odin

6)   There is absolutely no doubt in my mind about it, German cars have always been and will always be the best in every single way! Like someone already said, the 1.2 TT is an engine to consider. - Palmz

7)   In terms of looks, performance and brand image Germanc comes first, interior space, equipment, dealer network and resale value Korean wins. i20 slightly pricey and rear seat comfort and space of Polo already criticised, Germans spares will be expensive. - nabeelps

8)   Take a look at the values of Polo's compared to comparable Hyundai over the last 10 years, I am pretty sure you will see the residual value of the Polo outstrips that of the Hyundai. However, the Hyundai has come on in leaps and bounds but image and perception will still be that it is a cheap car. Look at Skoda for example, they continually ride high in the reliability and customer satisfaction surveys but again are perceived as rather lack lustre and without image. It takes a long time to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear ! - L G

9)   volkswagen polo better - Mukesh Bagda

10)   no i20 is better. - Asif

Question 2
Is there something special about the pre 1968 VW bugs?...  I've been looking for a Vw bug. I'm really a ignorant about them. Is there something special about the pre 1968 VW bugs. I've seen some people distinguish between them. And what is the difference between a beetle and bug?

Thanks

Answers
1)   Beetle was what VW officially called them. Bug was what they got called casually. They changed quite a lot around 1967/8(Volkswagen often changed models throughout the year rather than making all the changes for a new model year), in terms of styling and in terms of power. The later ones had more power. You can google "VW Beetle model changes" and find a lot of info. - Karen L

2)   The pre-1968 beetles had a different rear suspension than the post 68 models. The newer suspension system was better and safer. Also pre 1967 beetles had a six-volt electrical system and all the gremlins associated with six-volt systems. The 68 and newer ones had a little more horsepower than the earlier ones as well. - Rick

3)   The biggest change is that the 66, earlier, and some 67 bugs all ran on a 6 volt electrical system. By the late 50's most of the US vehicles had moved to 12 volt systems so finding parts and adding things like radios or that 'gotta have' 8 track system made it very hard because you had to find some kind of way of providing the correct voltage.

There were other less noticable differences.. fenders, lights/turn signals, suspension, etc.. but for my money the big difference was the battery and all the related systems (wiper motors, light bulbs, generator, and so on)

. - ca_surveyor

4)   and the rear windows are different people go crazy for the split windows and oval window bugs. one's a car and the other is a insect. - gooseboy78

5)   there are quite a few differences between 1968 and earlier bugs. the vw community has nicknamed 1968 and later bugs/buses/karmann ghias, type 3's as "Fat Chicks". this is, for some unknown reason, due to the change from the wide 5 bolt pattern for the wheels to the 4 lug wheels. other differences include the rear decklid, swingaxle rear ends(1968-on had IRS), link-pin front ends(68-on had ball joint), 1968 was the first year for a collapsible steering column, larger tail-lights, high back seats, different gearing in the transmission and the list goes on and on and on.

a beetle and a bug are the same thing. and vw never intended on calling it either, the name came from the consumer not the customer. VW's official name for the bug was the 'Type 1' - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

Question 3
which VW golf will i get?...  im 18 and getting a VW golf 2001/2002. im getting a 3 door and i want to no what the difference from 1.4 to 1.6 is? i want it to be fast but i dont want to fork out loads for insurance so is there really much difference between a 1.4 and a 1.6 in terms of speed ? and also in terms of insurance/petrol/tax?

Answers
1)   Just get the 1.4, they're fairly nippy and the insurance difference could be as much as £1000 better than the 1.6. Better yet, get a Polo and save yourself even more on insurance. - sheetwowsheet

2)   1.4 and 1.6 refer to the engine size. The numbers are the capacity of the engine's combustion chambers, measured in litres. A 1.6 litre engine will suck in more fuel for each complete revolution than a 1.4 litre engine. This means that it will generate more power per revolution.

This makes some very real differences between the two types of engine.

There is not a huge amount of difference between the 1.4 and 1.6 engines at top speed. Both will go fast enough for you to lose your licence at one offence (that is, you can go more than 100mph with either engine, and that is an immediate disqualification offence). Typical top speeds are 1.4 = 107mph, 1.6 = 117 mph.

The 1.6 engine will make the car accelerate faster if that's important to you. But honestly, unless you're a "flash git" who likes to burn (expensive) tyre rubber, a couple of seconds difference on the 0-60mph times isn't important. Typical acceleration 1.4 = 13.9 seconds, 1.6 = 11.9 seconds.

If you are on a long journey at motorway speeds (60 - 80 mph) then the 1.6 engine will be quieter and smoother because it's not working as hard as the 1.4 to maintain the speed. Although both engines will happily take you hundreds of miles at 70 mph the car with the smaller engine will deliver you feeling more fatigued (mostly 'cos of noise) than the bigger one.

The 1.4 engined car will be considerably cheaper to own than the 1.6 engined car. It will use less petrol and produce less emissions (so the car tax band will be lower) and the insurance will be a lot less.

As an 18 year old your insurance will be very high anyway, so you must consider whether the perceived "benefits" of a 1.6 engine are worth the extra premium costs. Try phoning a couple of insurance companies (or do an on-line quote) to compare the cost to you for each type of car. - The Tank

3)   There's not enough difference between the two engines for it to influence your decision. You're buying a car that's nearly 10 years old, so buy on condition alone, and never mind what engine it's got. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

4)   You need to get the insurance quote before you purchase the car. Most Insurance companies work on registration numbers so look at available cars in the classified ads and quote a registration number from a suitable car telling the insurers you are interested in buying that particular car. I have a feeling that any quote you do get will be prohibitive because of your age, you may be better lowering your sights to a car in a lower insurance group. - L G

Question 4
Would '03 rims fit '01 jetta?...  Hi, bought an 01 jetta for teenager. Car came with those thin tires and wide rims. She ruined a pair of newer tires due to low pressure on tires. Was told it'd be better to go back to stock vw rims. Found some from an '03 jetta but don't know it they'd fit '01 jetta. Read about bolts and nuts, etc., I just want something safe for my kid. Any input would be great.

Answers
1)   '03s will be fine, they will be a perfect fit. 2004 and up would not work. - Richard R

2)   Any wheels from a 1999.5-2005 VW Jetta, Golf, GTI, New Beetle or Audi TT will fit the 2001 Jetta fine. You want wheels with a 5x100 bolt pattern.

You mentioned that you read about the nuts, bolts, etc, but just to confirm you will want to make sure that you are using wheel lug bolts with a "ball" seat when you install stock wheels again. Most aftermarket wheel sets include "cone" seat lugs that will not safely center the wheel on the hub during installation. - gti_4cefed4

3)   Yes it will work safely, as both vehicles have the same bolt pattern and off set. 5x100 and 40/73 respectively, - Dwayne O'connor

4)   They will fit as they are the same PCD(Pitch Circle Diameter) They were changed on the 2005 model year as I found out when I bought a couple of second hand steel rims for a MK 4 Golf. - L G
