Is a vw beetle a good car?

Question 1
Is a vw beetle a good car?...  I just bought one. 2003 with 115,000 miles on it. Any problems I should be expecting?

Answers
1)   great car - spludder

2)   it's german engineering if anything can be said about that people it's that they are perfectionists if something happens with that car it was broken when you got it and if no then at least switch the oil, get the brake pads checked, and check the tires, if those three pass then you should be good for a while. - Chris

3)   good car ,German engineering, just enjoy and if something goes bad get repaired as in all things mechanical. - ramcharger

4)   You should be good to go... You should consider having it safety
inspected and also make sure things like the Timing Belt have been
replaced. - Pat

5)   Timing belt:
You may have an "interference engine", meaning your engine suffers $$$ damage if the timing belt breaks. Read all the information below, but your MOST important maintenance should be the timing belt and related tensioner and possibly water pump replacement costing about $800 total. of course if it was already replaced at 100,000 miles, your in good shape for another 85,000 miles.

6)   I am not sold on the new Beetle.
See this link; http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/vw_beetle.html
True there is only one recall: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/results.cfm
True that is only one on going investigation: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/defects/results.cfm
But they cost more to maintain then cars of the same class of other makes (these are for a newer model, but the statistics will be proportional):

The only one that I have knowledge that has had a long term owner has not been impressive.
However satisfaction with a car is so dependent on keeping it maintained right. So make sure it receives service on a regular basis and that the maintenance schedule is followed. - Old Man Dirt

7)   Do you know who the previous owner was? If yes, do you know how well the car has been maintained? Is it a turbo? So many more details needed to give a good answer. You should be alright if it has been maintained well prior to you owning it. Others have said "German Engineering" and they are correct. This is a good thing. I own a 2005 BMW 325i and have had literally NO problems with it. I am the original owner and I have maintained it fairly well. That is the key to any car lasting a good long time. - brian w

8)   I've enjoyed mine for six or seven years now -- it now has 120,000 miles on it, without any major mechanical repairs. (A couple of minor ones but nothing MAJOR). - Bryce

Question 3
What do you think of someone who drives a VW beetle ?...  The newer kind.......

Answers
1)   they lacked a serious time looking for a car, they don't take into account usefulness, they do a lot of city driving - Justin

2)   never think about peoples choice of cars/doesnt matter/howard hughes who had enough money to buy anything he wanted in multiple colors and fleets of them drove older bel air stick chevy/why? cause thats what he wanted/ - ken k

3)   I think that they are rather shallow.
I just saw one today that to me typifies the people who buy one. A little old lady driving a yellow one, there was a bunch of flowers in something beside the steering wheel. All prim and proper, trying to look pretty.
Then there is the one the woman vet owns, which I gotten to help push to the side of the road out of traffic because it stalled on her and would not restart.
Some how I have to admire those that drive such cars. It has to take a lot of courage to buy such a break down prone car.
Well it goes deeper then that, I owned a few british cars (Triumph TR 4's) and they treated me the same way (not wanting to restart at embarrassing times). It was a love hate relationship. - Old Man Dirt

4)   depends on the color, the more flashy colored ones are usually driven by stuck up chick that think they own the world and they can do whatever they want, this is true especially if its a convertible. other drivers of the VW bug seriously did not put functionality into what they were looking for in an automobile due to the lack of trunk space all around car space period. bottom line: people that want to drive a "cute looking" car buy VW bugs - smexy_kid
