Question 2
What type of fuel does a 2002 VW Golf use?...  I'm currently looking into purchasing a 2002 VW Golf and I've heard some conflicting reports as to what type of fuel it uses. It's got a 1.8L engine and I can't seem to find anything on the internet that says anything about it, could a car expert help me out here?

Answers
1)   That will use petrol if you are in the UK or gasoline in the USA. - BriaR

2)   Where are you located? I'm going to assume the US, thought it shouldn't matter as I believe the only 1.8L VW used anywhere in '02 was the 20 valve 1.8L Turbo that we're familiar with here in the US. Should that be the case, it calls for premium (91+ octane) unleaded gasoline only. - Richard R

3)   You would use regular gasoline. - Christina <3

4)   The 1.8T is a turbocharged engine. It MUST use premium fuel because of the higher effective cylinder pressure generated by the turbo. It is also a hot running so called sludge engine if you dont use synthetic oil. - pbleek

5)   IF you buy it, read the supplied owners manual and it'll tell you the required fuel octane level. - straight-shooter

Question 3
looking for an old bug...?...  I turned 16 in jan. and im looking for and old 70ish bug. i love them... also my dad will only spend $3500 on a car. help pls

Answers
1)   craigslist.com - Holly

2)   Just check the sidewalk outside, lots of bugs to pick up! - Steven Paul

3)   $3500 is plenty for a decent bug. Look for one that is as original as possible. Bugs are cheap and simple to repair, so many will be in various stages of Frankenbugginess.

See if your dad will let you keep some of that $3500 for a reserve fund, to repair and improve the bug here and there. Some things will be required of this car (and most old cars) to keep them reliable and dependable.

Here's a good example of a bug I would look for, this one is near me, in Seattle.

The car needs a paint job and new tires, and a few other minor repairs, but it's the original owner, and only $1500.

Good luck, enjoy your bug! - This Guys Sez

Question 4
'69 VW bus won't start.. help!?...  When I turn the key on it sounds like it wants to start buy never ignites! What are the possible issues. I just recently used a air compressor to try and fix it by compressing the gas tank and lines to make sure they were clean. Everything looked good. any advice?
Yes it was running fine until recently.. I took it for a drive and it just died at a red light and would not start back up... how embarrassing it was to come home in a tow truck

Answers
1)   I presume the bus has been running recently, and has not been sitting for 30 some years. Do you have some reason to believe that it is not getting gas ?Check that gas is in the carb and spraying when you move the throttle.

Also check that there is spark at the spark plugs. - jimanddottaylor

2)   well i'd check the ht leads, the lt leads and the spark plugs, to test for a spark, take the spark plug out, attach to the ht lead, and put it against metal, and turn engine on, or you could do a engine compression test. i had a similar problem with my mk6 escort, because it made the odd popping and the plugs were caked in carbon soot, changed the ht leads and the plugs, and it runs smooth as a peugeot diesel lol - Matthew Preece

3)   It is either fuel or the ignition.
If there is fuel in the bowl, then more then likely it is a ignition problem. Check the distributor, point, rotor and cap. While inside there make sure the grounding strap for the points is good. Also make sure the points open, the little nub sometimes wears off leaving the points closed. This should have been lubed when replaceing them, and is often forgotten by those who have not worked on old cars.
Sometimes the pin shears off the distributor drive, so make sure that it is turning. - Old Man Dirt

4)   check your points under the cap, sound like you not geting spark.

Question 5
Knocking sound when Turning Left?...  I have a 97 Jetta/Vento GLX Vr6.
New axles.
New motor mounts.

I get a clicking sound when shifting gears and pressing and depressing the gas pedal.
I also get a knocking sound when turning left.
I think my motor is still moving even though I replaced all the mounts 2 months ago and I double checked the bolts and everythings good. I used OEM mounts and Advance auto parts axles

Answers
1)   bushes or wheels bearings for the knocking sound.
And as for the clicking sound, to me i wouldn't really class it as a problem, it could be the selecters or the linkage, or worst case, bottom bearings are knackered for the pressing accelerator.

Hope i could help as i am a mechanic, but its quite hard to diagnose when you can't hear for yourself, because really speaking we need to take the car on a 5 minute road trip, doing emergency stops, and just generally test the car, usually we stick someone in the boot, and two people up front, - Matthew Preece

2)   well welcome to the world of cv joints.... sounds like the left one is going out... which is a common issue on alot of cars in the 95-00 year mark, esp if its over 100k - ben31027

3)   cv axel or wheel barring - Carly Clegg
