does red diesel overheat your engine?

Question 1
does red diesel overheat your engine?...

Answers
1)   No the only difference between red diesel and taxed diesel is the dye they use to colour it. - Boris

2)   red diesel is OFF ROAD ONLY diesel. it has a higher sulphur content and in most places is illegal for use on public roads. it does raise the exhaust temp because of the extra sulphur. it had more sulphur because it is refined less so it is cheaper and that is why it is usually reserved for heavy equipment - Ray

3)   No, the only difference besides the dye is that red diesel does not have road taxes included in the price. Do not take this lightly! If your tank is found to have red diesel in it, even if it is greatly diluted, your vehicle may be impounded and you will ultimately be fined a very large amount of money. You would be better off if it simply ruined your engine. - Michael

4)   nope its for farm use only - Carly Clegg

5)   No but you will overheat if caught using it in anything but a tractor or farm equipment.
as it is intended for farm use only and it does stain the fuel system as it has been in the tank.
you can be prosecuted for using it. - DR + Mrs Bears face

6)   No it doesn't overheat your engine. But if your stopped by the police and they dip your tank and find ANY trace of red die your car is seized by HM Customs and you will not get it back as you are evading paying the Tax on fuel. - who_is_jack_shit

7)   Directly no it doesn't But red diesel has been dyed red to signify use for agricultural machines only. Once you have used red diesel it will stain your fuel system & will remain traceable for many years. Also most places you can get red diesel from like farms etc store in in large tanks, moisture & debris can get into the tank & cause issues as it mixes with the fuel. If you get contamination in the fuel you're looking at new fuel filter (£10), injectors (£150+ each) & fuel pump (£500+) & assume you buy a new pump which fails within a few months, any warranty will be void because of incorrect fuel.

It isn't worth the risk. - toad.lett

Question 3
What type of fuel does a 2002 VW Golf use?...  I'm currently looking into purchasing a 2002 VW Golf and I've heard some conflicting reports as to what type of fuel it uses. It's got a 1.8L engine and I can't seem to find anything on the internet that says anything about it, could a car expert help me out here?

Answers
1)   That will use petrol if you are in the UK or gasoline in the USA. - BriaR

2)   Where are you located? I'm going to assume the US, thought it shouldn't matter as I believe the only 1.8L VW used anywhere in '02 was the 20 valve 1.8L Turbo that we're familiar with here in the US. Should that be the case, it calls for premium (91+ octane) unleaded gasoline only. - Richard R

3)   You would use regular gasoline. - Christina <3

4)   The 1.8T is a turbocharged engine. It MUST use premium fuel because of the higher effective cylinder pressure generated by the turbo. It is also a hot running so called sludge engine if you dont use synthetic oil. - pbleek

Question 4
my 1996 volkswagen engine oil leaks?...  I have a problem on my 1996 2.0 Jetta GL Volkswagen,it squirts oil from the top where the oil filter is located at each time i rev it,What will i do to stop it from leaking?I lose almost a gallon of oil for every 30 mile drive, please advise me

Answers
1)   Check your oil filter is tight. It's too loose if you can turn it by hand . Probably worth changing it as a matter of course and tightening up with a chain wrench or a strap wrench. If the oil is coming from anywhere else e.g. where the cylinder head and block meet then it's more serious and will need a head gasket change at the very least. I was going to suggest an oil change but it seems you do that every 30 miles anyway :-( - GibsonEssGee

2)   if your engine has an oil cooler between the block and that filter, your are going ot have to pull it off and replace the gaskets around it. - mdk68gto, ase certified m tech

3)   it sounds as though you need to replace the oil pressure sensor housing, i just done mine on my vr6 94 model. - mr VR6
