How to Unlock the fuel cap on a VW 2001 polo?

Question 1
How to Unlock the fuel cap on a VW 2001 polo?...  please help we've tried everything and cant seem to get it to unlock and when we do we dont know how we've done it :S

Answers
1)   put the key in and press down and turn it - idac123

2)   It should unlock with the central locking. If it doesn't, either the little locking plunger is stuck or there's a leak in the pipe from the central locking pump to the plunger. In the short term, you should be able to pry it open without damaging the lock. - J G

3)   As JG says, the Polo has a weird vacuum operated locking system. Once you've persuaded it to open, the common "cure" is to disconnect the vacuum lock and get yourself an ordinary locking cap. You may, though, be able to get at the pipe and track it, looking for leaks or a disconnection. - champer

4)   You haven't tried everything as the cap is still locked. Look in the handbook, haven't got one? buy one from a dealer. - Fred Smith

5)   If the fuel flap is shut with the central locking there is a manual overide behind the boot trim. You car handbook shows you this. If it is the key lock on the fuel cap, turn the key until you pull the key out and then unscrew, you may have to turn it a full turn until the ratchet mechanism on the cap engages and allows you to fully unscrew and remove the cap. - L G

Question 2
manual cars are cheapper than automatic?...

Answers
1)   Usually a manual is less expensive than an automatic, this is because a manual is generally cheaper to build and are less prone to failure, there for less expensive to warranty the vehicle. - Matthew H

2)   Yes this unfortunately is true not only on the car lot but also in the long term. Plus the manual transmission can be fixed a heck of a lot easier and cheaper than the automatic and it gives longer life to the vehicle because a whole lot of vehicles are simply given up on when the auto-transmission becomes too expensive to repair or replace. In most automatic cars the transmission to fix is often times more than the value of the car. - amber

3)   they're also the cheaper option because most people are lazy as hell and don't want to learn how to drive a manual, so the automatic option is more expensive because they're going to sell more. - Greg

4)   Volkswagen automatics are cheaper in the long run. manuals need clutches, and when you floor it in reverse with the manual you have to hold the shifter in gear cause it may kick out causing damage to the transmission - Volkswagen

5)   I think it depends on the type of car. If it's a sports or performance car, then a manual will probably be worth more, because enthusiasts appreciate that, therefore, they are willing to pay more.

Having said that, if it's a "normal" car, a manual will probably be cheaper because most people in the U.S prefer an automatic. - Eddy

Question 3
VW Transporter 1.9TD thick smoke, brown when started, then white/blue.?...  The clutch gives a small knock when started and the revs go up and down a small bit in idle and while driving. It revs fully for a few seconds in idle and then goes back down. When reving it produces a lot of thick darkish smoke. The engine makes a whirring noise like its electric above 2500 revs. I ran the tank dry over a week ago, but it started again fine and gave no trouble for a few days. since then i have put nearly 4 litres of oil in it aswell. Any ideas or help would be well appreciated!

Answers
1)   Sounds like the turbo charger is broken - Timbo is here

2)   If it's used a gallon of oil in a week, you obviously have some serious engine wear. This shouldn't have been caused by running out of diesel though. - J G

3)   head gasket i think, oil is getting into cylinders.

if you get the car started get someone to rev it and put your hand over exhaust, if there is oil specks on your hand gasket, as for reving? could be a blocked oil flow around the engine? - Darren B

4)   Sounds like the seals have gone in the turbo and the oil is being drawn into the engine as well as going out into the exhaust system. You need to be very careful with starting your van. Once a certain amount of oil gets into the intercooler radiator it will force feed the engine and YOU will not be able to turn it off as the revs increase to flat out. In the worst case scenario it will throw a piston con rod through the engine block. I have seen this occur with an Iveco and it is frightening to say the least. - L G

5)   head gasket check the oil Colour - Ryan Arnold
