1960 vw bug - how can i tell if my bug i a 6 volt or 12 volt?...  i have heard look at alternator but what am i looking for?

1)   Look at the battery. 6 volts have 3 cells and 12 volt have 6 cells - Robert

2)   Does it have a generator or a alternator? If its a alternator then its been changed over to a 12v system if it still has the generator then it is a 6v system still. - Rick M

6)   Unless it has been updated to a 12v system, it is a 6v system.
The stock 6v system has a voltage regulator mounted to the top of the generator.
The 12v system (1967 and a half and up), has a generator with no voltage regulator mounted on top of the generator. It is mounted under the back seat , left side. If the vehicle has been updated to a12volt system, the regulator is typically mounted in a more convenient place, like on the firewall or even mounted to the fan shroud. Or simply check for a 6volt(3cell) battery, or a 12v (6cell) battery. Under the back seat. - dewhatulike

Are VW beetles bad cars to buy ?...  I wanted to buy a VW 2002 used beetle but I keep hearing all these horror stories about trnasmission and the windows breaking and a whole lot of other stuff just wanted to know if it was true

Is a 2005 jetta with 120,000 miles for $3,000 a good deal?...  its in great shape, the only thing i'm iffy about is the 120,000 miles

1)   Get it inspected by a good mechanic before you buy it and if it checks out and nothing major needs to be repaired/replaced soon, $3000 for a 2005 Jetta sounds like a really good deal. Book value on a 2005 Jetta with 120K is significantly higher than $3000 (it's like $5500 fwiw). - Ben Linus

Which Jetta and what optional equipment. There are 32 different trim lines. A well equipped TDI should sell for well over $10,000 with 120,000 miles.

Quite frankly even if it's the stripped base model it sounds too good to be true. Does it have a branded title (salvaged)? Don't tell me you saw it on Craigslist or Ebay and they say they're going to ship it to you after they get your money. - Howard L

4)   YES that would be a great deal even if u had to get something fixed on it. I just bought a Sweet 2003 vw jetta 1.8 T for 4000.00 and is a great car looking and running! It has 117000 miles and still goes fast!! - El Mikestro
