Why are volkswagens recognized as chick cars?

Question 1
Why are volkswagens recognized as chick cars?...  Why are volkswagens recognized as chick cars? I have never owned a VW but the comment I keep hearing is that it's a chick car. Maybe I have stupid friend but I have known for the longest time that VW's are fast. And they would even beat me racing (In a legal racetrack situation of course) I have heard that this chick/guy car thing only exists in the US. So, why does the VW brand have the "chick" reputation in the US?

Answers
1)   Because people where we live, the U.S. are stupid. - My Alias

2)   Because knowledgeable fathers buy their daughters these cars. If a thousand fathers bought their daughters F150's would that make it a chick car? Seriously I don't see it being a chick car. If maybe a vw cabriolet then maybe. Put a flower on a Bugatti, would that make it a chick car. Why not just take the flower off of the car. I see a lot of girls driving mustangs. But I don't see mustangs as a chick car. - yongjiujunshi

3)   Becuase Audi's are a man car yo. Audi is the VW's boyfriend - 4968_dog

4)   It's not any and all VW's. It's mainly the older model Jetta's that get the label of a chick car. It's not because of performance, it's because of the body styling. Older Tiburons are also labeled chick cars just because it looks like the body style that a girl drives more. I love VW and I've definitely seen more guys driving them but for some reason they're still labeled that way. - tony

5)   Volkswagens aren't "Chick cars" you're friend is stupid, i own an '86 GTI and there's nothing "girly" about it. It is quite badass, actually. People who think Volkswagens are chick cars are people who know nothing and think of the New Beetles, probably because women think they're "cute" or something. - Taran

6)   A lot of dumb things only exist in the US. Trust us we look in and laugh all the time - Barking_Dog

Question 2
My 78' vw Beelte jerks alot, What could it be?...  The problem started about a week ago but it just happened from time to time. Now it happens just about all the time. The car just jerks violently then goes smooth and just repeats this process the whole time.
Ive heard someone say that it might be the fuel filter being dirty. I know very little about cars but I don't have the cash to fix it at present, so if I could fix it myself that would be great.

Ive recently put in a new fuel tank but made sure it was clean and I cleaned it out, could this have something to do with it?

All help appreciated.
By the way, the car idols OK.

Answers
1)   Could be a million things but the fuel system would be a good starting point , replace filter , check all fuel lines , check fuel pump is working correctly and lastly the carby may have a belly full of rubbish and you will have to pay someone to fix that properly
By the way it idles OK - Barking_Dog

2)   Sounds life you car is having misfires. Try changing the spark plugs - DemonSpawn

3)   put the handbrake down all the way! LOL - Squish

4)   i have a question 4 you is Your car a sander ? if so you may need a new clutch but i've read all what everyone has said and there right the only thing i could add would be you may need to run a full injector cleaner just in case you did pick something up out of the new or old tank that may passed the filter one more thing you may look at your distributor cap it my have a crack in it or the little Router bug may not be getting good contact or is fold out good luck hoped this helped you - redneck

5)   I would ask a friend that knows a little about cars to help you change the fuel filter. It is not only possible that it is dirty but it could also have water in it. - Hey You

Question 3
VW owners: Please Help! Is it true that VW cars aren't as dependable and reliable as some other car brands?...  I have been thinking of parking a 2010 Golf in my driveway. I like the styling of the car and I've always been a fan of Audi/VW interiors. But there are two things stopping me from purchasing the car. 1. I hear from different sources that the newer VWs aren't as good as they used to be and that I should buy a Honda, etc. 2. (And this one isn't the main reason) is that VW is not offering the fun and frugal engines offered in Europe. I haven't heard too many kind things about the 5 cylinder engine offered in the US (bad fuel milage and noisy) and my only other choice would be the diesel, which I'd love to own, but cannot afford due to VWs higher premium pricing. Please help me get some answers. Thanks!

1)   dependable sure as any other car its the up keep thats cost you parts are high an dhard to find just any shop that can work on it and sometimes if parts not on hand it might be months to get unles you live in Europe - kelly_f_1999

2)   In my opinion I wouldnt get a volkswagon! I have a 1998 Volkswagon Jetta and Ive had nothing but problems with it. EVerytime Ive had a family member or autoshop work on it, they make a face and DREAD it. My step dad owned a shop and when I first got the vehicle he wouldnt wanna work on it bc its such a pain. The parts are VERY expensive and the car to me IS NOT reliable. If I were you I would def. get a honda. I understand that yours would be a 2010 and mine is a 98' but EVENTUALLY something will go wrong. Its a foreign car...If I could go back I would get a Honda. They run FOREVERR literally and the parts are not that expensive. My mother has a volkswagon and its been in the shop every other week and hers is a 2002. Its just never ending. I payed 3500 for mine and ive put at least 5500 into it. Do I regret it?...ABSOLUTELY! - DC

3)   now hold on, my 1997 golf has bee vary reliable, its pushing about
310,xxx km and shes still holding up i had the catalytic converter swapped and new plugs to pass emissions but that was it., oil changes every 4000 klicks and tranny everything is good. germans build solid cars,,, now mine was made in germany and yea the newer ones are from mexico but I'm sure there are strict design specs and i herd that the tdi's run forever but rally how long do you want to keep it.

so really jap rice or german schnitzel ps i would suggest the jetta its alot more classy - Vince

4)   i have a 00 jetta and trying to sell it..im from ireland.
but id advise you not to get one!!!
iv had nothing but problems and problems with mine since i bought it, and vw parts are so much more expensive!
the same common problems seem to happen to most jettas, iv been looking at online forums etc.
everybodys getting the same problems! eg. electrical faults, flywheel, waterpump etc. etc.
iv had mine about 9 months and spent over 2000 euro on repairs alone!
cant wait to sell..

definetly, you should go for a honda or a toyota - lucky charm
