performance engine for VW bug?

Question 1
performance engine for VW bug?...  i know quite a bit about cars, specifically small block chevys and 65-72 muscle cars, but im thinking about getting a VW bug (65-70) and puting performance parts on it. reason for choosing a bug is mainly because it is what i can afford, second is because it is tremendously light, which is a huge advantage on the strip. but my knowledge about chevy engines does nothing when i own a rear engine VW. the fact that this is the only time ive ever thaught about buying an import is also prevalent, so information is appreciated.

my question is, what kind of performance parts can i buy for a bug of that year that will bring my rwhp to 250 at least, i know heads and piston sets are cheap and i cant find any turbos that will fit, or any nitrous systems that arent 4bbl versions. should i upgrade the engine that is in it, or find another? if so, what would fit into what i want and what would you recomend? (extra hp is again, always appreciated)

thanks

1)   The limiter is the air cooling. The more hp you make, the hotter the engine runs, and the more heat you have to get rid of. Most strip VWS have a Porche engine and a cooling system added - rick29148

2)   try cbperformance.com or gemvw.com also thesamba.com has high performance parts for the air cooled vw,and you can build a 350 chevy for the same price as a vw with 250 hp.a 2332cc motor with dual 44 webers is over $4,000.00 and talking turbo with injection system is over $10,000.00,imports not too cheap any more i have been building drag race engines for over 30 yrs, back in the day vw's where cheap, but some where along the line they cost just as much as the chevy V-8 do.go figure ???and don't forget a stock vw trans axle wont handle that kind of power. - KAM

3)   Here is a good web page to start with

Question 2
I bought my 1995 Passat in January and nobody nos wats wrong with it. It keeps draining the battery.?...  I have been asked wat all the wires are about? Hell, Im a female, Im not suppose to know these things! I have never seen a car with so many wires, but when it comes to me not being able to go to work bcuz there is no juice. I have noticed a little red lite on my door next 2 the lock that appears. I really need advise and don't want 2 spend money @ a little redneck place that ask me about my car.
Thankyou for your time

1)   well have you checked the alternator and all the wires in between it and the battery?
then theres the chance of something being left on or being permanently run by the battery even when the car is off.....do you have the previous service records for the car they may yield a clue if you do have them - Richard

2)   IF you are able to jump your car and drive it all day and it is fine. but when you turn it off it doesn't start back up in the morning after sitting for 4+ hours. THEN i would say you have a parasitic drain. This means that something is staying on when it shouldn't be. Most commonly a trunk light. I would recommend removing your trunk light if no other lights are staying on and seeing if this fixes your problem.

IF not then your alternator is not putting out proper voltage and your alternator and battery needs to be replaced - gbskater215

3)   I had a 1991 VW Jetta and i had the same problem. My fix was that the car had an aftermarket cd player. The previous owner had wired it themselves and they wired it wrong so it drained battery power while the car was turned off. Try taking it to a car audio place and ask them to check the wiring.

This is only if it has an aftermarket cd player - planning for the future

Question 3
How much should it cost to replace a clutch and timing belt on a 2001 Jetta 1.8T? $2000?...  I am being quoted around $2000 for a clutch and timing belt with labor included. Is this a reasonable amount for a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T?

Thanks!
This is a double-mass flywheel clutch to be clear.

Answers
1)   yea that's reasonable. my clutch was $2k to replace on an 89 honda - chickenjoe

2)   It depends if you got with VW parts or aftermarket parts in all hoensty. I replaced my Jetta's clutch with a aftermarket clutch which cost about 1400 for parts and labor and timing belts are generally cheap as it is. I personbally prefer aftermarket clutches because they are built for driving fast, chirping gears while standard clutchs are not.

Ask your car guy to look into aftermarket products to see if they can save you some money. - trüüth

3)   I replaced the timing belt on my 2003 Golf and it only took a couple hours and cost next to nothing. - The Pird

Question 4
What do YOU think a VW Convertible Beetle says about its owner?...

Answers
1)   That they were able to get a classic car, and if fixed up,then they have one sporty VW. - DR DEAL

2)   That they are a confident and proud Volkswagen owner. - Prairie girl

3)   There is nothing that a car says about it's owner.
Car's don't talk.

A vert says you are willing to take chances, chances for a wet knee, chances that your car will get broken in to, chances are that you are a fun type that enjoys sunshine wind through your hair and an occasional bug or two.

If you have to worry about what others think your car is saying about you.... then you have bought the wrong car. Confidence and Satisfaction is what you are lacking and you want further acceptance of your ride and of your choices...

Ya ain't gonna find it any where but in the mirror. - Briano

Question 5
2003 VW Passat New Tires?...  I have a 2003 VW Passat GLS Front wheel drive. I bought the car used from a VW Dealer in 2006. It came with new tires it was a weird brand that I have never seen before. Not long after I bought it the rubber started to come off my tires in chunks. So I took them to Discount Tire that carried that brand of tires and they offered to replace the tire that was defective or credit me money on all four tires. I took the credit and bought the Goodyear Triple Tread Assurance Tires. Discount Tire installed them and everything seemed great the tires handled awesome in the wintertime I live up in Minnesota by the way. I always was on top of my rotations for the tires. Last month when I went to get them rotated they said I should start looking into getting new tires which I expected because I got about 60,000 miles on them. I was really happy with the good years so I was thinking I would probably get the same ones again. Well today I went to Sam's Club and I thought well while I'm here I will go and see what they charge for the Goodyear tires. When I walk in I ask the guy if they have the Triple Assurance Tires he says yes and ask what type of vehicle are they for. I tell him and he says that they would not mount those tires on my car because they are not designed to support the weight of a European vw car. I said well those are the tires I have on my car right now and he said that if I would go and look at my tires that they would be wore down on a angle and that is true I knew before I went in that the tires were wore on a angle. The guy then recommends me the Dunlop Signature 91H tire. Now that I'm home I have done some research and found that the Dunlop Signature is a Touring tire. I'm hopping to get a tire that is more performance driven then touring. Do you think I should believe the Sam's Club guy? If anyone has any suggestions on what tires would be the best for my car that would be great. Remember they need to also be good in the winter to. Sorry about the long explanation. Thanks for the help Everyone.
Yes I had them for 2.5 years and drove all 60,000 miles. I thought they handled great on dry, wet and icy roads. Since your a tire guy what is a tire you would say is good for my car?

Answers
1)   and you had them how long of time 60,000 miles did you feel they drove bad or didnt get the miles sure bet he had more Dunlop Signature for a higher price don tbuy tire at off neat shop like sam or walmarts go to a real tire store prices wil be real close you like what you had buy more of them im a tire guy my trade what i say to peopel is cl three places know your size its on driver door sticker ask whats your cheapest tire in that size an dafter they tel you then ask what else you have and that next tire wil be a better longer lasting tire my self prefer a flat looking tread over a rounded edge type an dyou can press down on bear tire if its push in easy its cheap and short life shop for the best or type you like type into searchbox

best touring tire
best all season tire
best handling tire
best winter tire
things like that wil bring up best an d go from there shop a round for prices - kelly_f_1999

2)   Check out the "Michelin" brand tires. They provide reasonable pricing with no compromising in performance. The Pilot & Primacy are a couple of subcategories to consider. Sam's may have them, yet Costco carries them for sure. Do a quick search on Costco website, see if you like the tread configuration. As you know, do an alignment, especially if you intend to change all four tires, and always get the size meant for your specific tire rims. - M3

3)   hhhhhhhh - Kakariko
