HELP!, White smoke from 05 VW Jetta Exhaust?

Question 1
HELP!, White smoke from 05 VW Jetta Exhaust?...  I just purchased a used 05 VW Jetta.Have had it officially 1 week today. Took it on a road trip, about 300 miles from home, "slowed down" for traffic on the highway after about 3 hours of driving @ 70mph , then accelterated again, notice huge cloud of white smoke from exhaust pipe. No sputtering, stalling or spitting, just picked up speed again without hesitation. Parked car for about 2 hours, started again, white cloud again, still no problem,no leaks, etc. Seems to do this after being driven for about an hour or longer. What's wrong????? Please help, incase I have to return it to the dealer & get another car. They claim , after keeping it for 2 days to not notice anything/problem.

Answers
1)   Its a VW, trade it for something else. Most mechanics despise VW because it requires special tools to work on the engine.
They also aren't very reliable.

Id suggest trading for a Honda ;) - D

2)   Sounds like you are burning oil. Take it back. - the_emrod

3)   your head gasket, check to see if your losing water - everyonesfriendtom

4)   That's probably a head gasket problem. If it's a diesel then it could be due to retarded injection timing. (possible slipped timing belt)

Cheers for the thumbs down - just try setting the timing back on a diesel and watch the exhaust - unburnt diesel=white smoke, as does water in the cylinders. - Mickey T

5)   It one of two thing wrong with your car (1) blow head or head gasket or transmission vacuum modulator is bad all will blow white smoke out of you exhaust to find out which one it is check the radiator or transmission fluid - STEELERS Nation( THE JOY OF SIX)

6)   AH a honda yea don't do that Just take it back to dealer. By law you have 30 days to change your mind on the car. And don't trade it for a honda you will be disappointed imoa!

also the two people above me have excellent points try those - veedub514

7)   White smoke is typically steam not smoke. That means that you are getting coolant water into your combustion cycle and that is not good.

With the engine cold check your water level. If you have a water leak the level will be very low and this could make the problem worse.

DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT OR RUNNING.. if you have a blown head gasket or cracked block the missing water gets replaced by VERY hot steam and exhaust gases which will then blow out and scald anything they touch.

If the water IS low, re-fill it and run the car .. the white smoke should appear shortly to confirm the problem. YOu should not drive the car any more except to a mechanics. A blown head gasket is expensive but a cracked block means a whole new engine and driving a car with little or no water will skip right over the head gasket issue and go straight to the cracked block.

Sorry.. but from what you describe it does not sound good, take it back to the dealer. I woud also carefully check any other car he offers if he could not find this type of problem on his first try.

Question 3
Where is the flux capicator located on an 2003 jetta?...

Answers
1)   Behind the gigawatt generator. Be careful when removing it, It has a thermocouple attached to it. This can be removed using a 5/16 open end wrench. - Ironball

2)   In the starboard Jefferies tube, just aft of the secondary klystron.

Edit: Ironball - shouldn't that be a metric crescent wrench instead? - Ralfcoder

3)   it is on the opposite side of the kanuter valve - tweek639

4)   The flux capacitor provides the power to stabilize the relative bearings. Since these may be on either side of the transverse mercator, some models have TWO locations, left and right side just slightly above the iambic pentameter.

You may have to look hard to spot them as road dirt and ions often make them hard to spot. - ca_surveyor

5)   well you have to find a (now this is the imortant part) a Yellow 95 m3 take the motor out. Go downtown and find Billy he's the negborhood drug dealer now you have to speak slowly to him. Tell him you want to trade him the M3 motor for a Flat Black flux capicator. You will also need to bring the M Bagde or he wont do it.

Ps we do this all the time at the dealership dont tell anyone - veedub514

Question 4
VW headlight problems?...  I noticed my passenger side headlight was out so i bought new headlights and had my friend put in the new one. nothing went wrong but the light wont work. we tested the plug for the bulb and it works fine and none of the fuses are burnt out or anything. what could it be.

Answers
1)   If you tested the socket and it has power then you may have a defective headlight. - uthockey32

2)   it is most likely a problem with the wires or connector going to that headlight check the connector and the resistance of the wire. Also check the ground side of the Passenger side headlight circuit. Or you could always look around town for a VW tech that does side jobs when their not working. - veedub514

3)   what vintage vw, new or old? If its old, the trouble is in the fuse. but that's not necessarily true, it could be in the wiring too. You'll have to buy a meter and sort out your wiring. - lar

4)   Im with the other guys. If you have power and ground at the socket "(you said you tested the socket), then odds are you got a bum bulb. Simple..... - runvws

5)   Easy and simple solution:

1) Swap the headlight for the one on the other side.. does it work? then your prob. is in the wiring or the connector.

2) Doesn't work... its a bad headlight (yeah.. it happens).. go get another. But put the good light into the passenger side first to make sure that it is not BOTH problems. - ca_surveyor

Question 5
How many miles will a 2000 Volkswagen GTI GLX last for?...  im looking into buying a 2000 Volkswagen GTI GLX and it has 159 thousand miles on it. they are asking 5795 for it. it is a vr6 so if anyone has any suggestions or comments then feel free to post them. thanks

Answers
1)   If u keep it up...400k - AkosX

2)   when buying used cars
type into search box
how to check a used car

get a checklist and look for signs of problems one checks shape of car it all depends on how it was cared for most any car with right care able to drive into the 400,000 range its al about shape what what care it was giving

my car say it has over 300,000 miles an di payed 1300 buck for 6yrs ago
you can find alow mileage car thats been drove at a drag strip and be junk with 2000 miles its all about care - kelly_f_1999

3)   Completely depends on how well it was maintained by previous owner(s) and how well it will be maintained in the future.

The engineering lifespan goal for modern cars sold in the USA is 150,000mi. That doesn't mean every car will disintegrate after 150K, but that's the engineering goal when designing major systems in the car. If it was well maintained it can go much longer (I have a car with quite a bit more miles that still runs great but I also have maintained it religiously over its entire lifetime). If the car was regularly abused and maintenance was neglected even just periodically throughout its life it might already be on its last legs with 159K on it.

If the current owner has extensive maintenance records that would be a big plus (and he/she should for that price - it's kind of expensive for a 10 model year old car with 159K on the clock IMHO.) If there are large gaps in the maintenance records or if the owner doesn't have any records, for that price I'd shop elsewhere. - Ben Linus

4)   For what it's worth, I have a 1999.5 Jetta, with 210,000 on it. I maintain it well, and it still runs fine for the most part. Some cosmetic wear, though. - Jon
