I have an inch of play in my crankshaft of my 68 bug 1500.?

Question 1
I have an inch of play in my crankshaft of my 68 bug 1500.?...  It doesn't go side to side like it's and end play issue, i can just grab the flywheel and move it in and out about .5-1 inch. I'm thinking main bearings but i want other input.

Answers
1)   I would guess considerable wear to the block and crank mains as well for that kind of movement. - < none >

2)   I would get a reconditioned exchange engine, that is definitely excessive end float. - Gizzard Puke

3)   Sounds wiped out . This would be a problem with the thrust bearing . Thrust bearing is the bearing surface that limits play back and forth and in most engines is part of a main bearing . But due to the amount of play you have sounds like the crank is wiped out . - I hate yellow jackets

4)   All you can do is tear it down and see if it is the crank, block or main bearings but my gess is all will have some problem of wear. Will most likely have to turn the crank and have new bearings and just ask what the might could do to the block. Up to you how much work you want to put into it. Sometimes cheaper to get a rebuilt one than to do it yourself just have to look around. Great following and lots of information around on those cars so should be able to get anything you need.

5)   something ain't right. Seeing you are grabbing the flywheel means you got the engine out. Either you are planning to rebuild it or maybe swap it out for another on which does not have that kind of play. Check your buds or the local papers for another bug motor. Something is definitely wrong with that puppy. - LazerSword beats everything

Question 2
I have a vw rabbit and I don't drive a lot. Should I wait for first 15,000 km to change the oil or by time?...

Answers
1)   Maybe not as often as they say but more by time. Like a empty jug setting out side you can see sweat from the changing temperature. Your oil pan does the same and collects moisture in the oil that normal running evaporates out. If all you do is short trips it should be done more by time. If the car is stored in a garage with less change in temperature then may not need to be done as often as one stored outside. Talk to someone you trust since different people feel different.

rd - ronnny

2)   Manufacturers recommendations are always announced my mileage and time. (typically 3 months or 3,000 miles.) What this means is whichever occurs first. So, if you are putting little miles on your engine, then revert to the time (if it occurs first). - Mudrat_toy

3)   It is kind of a hit a miss thing. Sure you can go by the manufacturers recommendations and do it by time.... but think of it like this. If they had a car in the showroom for "lets say a year" oil is not gonna be changed. Why, because it went from a round tin can into a square pan. It is new oil, just in another container. No wear, no tear no nothing. So the oil is as good as the first day it was dumped in. The only thing to take a beating is the battery if the engine never runs as the battery slowly discharges just sitting there and a running motor helps keeping it charged up to the top.
I did my mom's car by the mileage(every 3000 miles) and she went to work every day in town so I never really thought much about there being a problem with that schedule. By the time she did 3000 miles, a year went by...since I recorded the last oil change. (She drove only 5 miles one way.) Did it hurt the engine(which is metal by the way). I doubt it. And that was cast iron V8 engine block and steel(meaning rust happens inside).
The Rabbit is magnesium and aluminum and steel. The first two don't rust and steel does but you do it when you do it. The oil filters are better these days then older ones.
I know people that bought Mercury pickup trucks for the farm and the first oil change was at 50,000 miles. Ran better before the oil change than after. - LazerSword beats everything

4)   You shoud change every 5000 mile or 8000 km of course depend on oil . - Rolling

Question 3
what other car brand wheel will fit vw bug?...  such as ford, chevy, honda etc.

Answers
1)   Audi wheels will generally fit straight on to VW products. I really don't know of any other car brands. It all depends on stud pattern and dimensions and wheel offset. If you really want to change the wheels then either go with another VW product, an Audi product or an after-market wheel which has been specifically offset and drilled for your car. - Paul

2)   If its the new Beetle then a Jetta wheel will fit. A Passat or Audi A3 or A4 will also fit . - L G

3)   try skoda - David F

4)   Depends on the year of the car.
The early VW Beetles used 4x130 PCD, and nothing else matches.
Then VW changed to 4x100 for the Golfs
then to 5x100, and current cars use 5x112 - CDC

Question 4
2006 Volkswagen Passat. Good deal? Help!?...  I am buying a new car (used, new for me). I had decided on a 2007 Jetta (I have owned 2 in the past). I was not looking for a Passat, because I want something with good features, low miles and a certain price range and knew I couldn't find a Passat with all that within my price range. But I found a 2006 Passat 2.0T Comfort Package with only 15,000 miles for $16,999. The body style has not changed from the 2006-2010 so no one would know from just looking that it's a 2006 and the miles are what you'd expect from a 2009- it's also a Volkswagen Certified Car, which means when the standard warranty is up, I will have an additional 2 years or 24,000 miles added to the standard warranty.

I looked on Edmund's site and the car with all it's options says the Certified Used Vehicle price should be $20,614.

Anyone have any opinion on if it sounds like a good deal? Any suggestions? Thanks!
I have checked the carfax and it has the correct milage, no accidents and one owner. Also it is from a Volkswagen dealer and like I said a Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle (which gives me the extended warranty) so it has gone through the test Volkswagen requires to become one (Certified).

Who is the stig in top gear!?!?!?!?!?...

Answers
1)   This gets asked EVERY DAY.

Search next time.

The answer is, the show has withheld his identity on purpose. So no one knows.

Poor LS1 is wrong as usual. Not just at spelling my name. The BBC has never officially released the identity of the Stig. There has been evidence to make people believe it is Ben Collins, but without a confirmation, it is purely speculation.

If LS1 had bothered to read any of the articles on the matter, he would have known that. - Vipassana

2)   Vippassin WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

white stig- ben collins
original (black) stig- perry mcarthy

search autoblog.. ben collins admitted to being the stig when a contractor that was doing some work on his house came across his uniforms and helmets and tried to blackmail him - LS1

3)   Even The Stig doesn't know who The Stig is!!! LOL! - tali4569
