95 jetta gls steams under the hood?

Question 1
95 jetta gls steams under the hood?...  how do i know if i have a blown gasket or cracked ?

Answers
1)   only way to tell for sure is pull it apart and look......good luck - Karle

2)   ok check your fluid, see how much u have. fill it up then start the car and run to ur exhaust pipe and check for a smoke, if u dont have any then its not a head gasket and very well could be a leak in ur system else where - KR317L3R

3)   Hi,

You would be puffing out white smoke from your tail pipe if your head gasket was gone and you would see engine coolant and oil mixing with each other if you had a cracked head or a bad head gasket.

4)   Well there are a few ways to test for a cracked head/gasket:

1. When you are running the car and you see the steam in the hood.
Can you squeeze the hoses easily? Cracked/bad head gaskets can cause exhaust gasses to over pressurize the hoses so they have no give at all and look like they have ballooned.

2. Is there oil in the Antifreeze or antifreeze in the oil? bad gasket blown head

3. On a cold car, take the overflow res cap off, and tie a rubber glove or balloon over the opening. Start the car, does the glove inflate and give you the finger instantly or with in 2 minutes? if so bad gasket.

4. You can take your car to a radiator shop and they can test it for exhaust gasses suspended in the antifreeze. Some General car repair shops can do this too.

5. Compression test of the Cylinders.

6. Is there engine oil / antifreeze seeping out between the head and the cylinder block?

What is more common on newer vw's than a blown head gasket is one of the many plastic flanges that attach the radiator hoses to the head crack at the bolt holes allowing coolant to leak out...

Hoses that get pin hole leaks can cause that too...

There are commercial kits that you can buy to add a dye to the antifreeze you run your car till it gets fully hot then use a UV lamp to check for dye residue. - Briano

5)   Well, are you sure its one of them? Blowing "steam from under the hood" is not a very good description and could also include a leaking radiator, hose, or a cracked or failing water pump. All of which are much easier repairs.

On the down side, you know you have one of the worse ones if:

1) Your oil on the dip stick looks like white goo or foam. (water is being mixed with oil.. just like in a salad)

2) You have exhaust gases INSIDE your radiator which create super hot water which over heats the engine which blows your water out very quickly.

3) In addition to #2, you generally get white exhaust smoke that smells like antifreeze.

-----------

Ok.. to your question: There is no easy way to tell in the case of #2... It could be a cracked block, a blown head gasket, or a cracked manifold..

In the case of #1 its is more likely a cracked block.. but a badly blown head gasket does that too..

In any event.. the only way you find out is to strip off the heads check them and the gaskets.. if they are good, then its the block (somewhere). Usually you can see the crack(s) but sometime they are hidden in the block itself.

sorry.. but in any approach, it is expen$ive.

Question 3
my car overheats 95 jetta gls?...  my car overheats within 5-10 minutes of me turning it on and smoke comes from under the hood, smells kinda like coolant, could a fucked up sensor cause this

Answers
1)   have you checked your coolant? and your water pump or thermostat may be out. - X.x.Zach.x.X

2)   Hole in the radiator? Look. - the space pope

3)   You got problems, sounds like a cracked head or gasket to me. Time to spend some money. - yahwhooon

4)   My car did this a while back I took it in and it was the valve that opened the flow of coolant into the engine when the car got to the proper tempature. It was a 20 dollar part and was like 60 dollars to put it in. come to find out it is easy to put in like a 5 year old could do it. - jarrod.hamilton@sbcglobal.net

5)   Hi,
Your temperature switch on the radiator could be bad which is causing the rad fans not to turn on and to over heat.

Question 4
will a porsche engine fit on a vw beetle transaxle?...  ive heard that a lot of parts are interchangeable on the old bugs and porsche cars. like ive heard the sleeves are but I'm not sure. ive been thinking about buying a bug but i don't want a stock one. does the older porsche 6 cyl fit the bell housing of the bugs. has anyone done this before?

Answers
1)   friend of mine had a bad ass porshe engine in his bug, he put a wheelie bar on it cause acceleration was soo good - Iconic

2)   I have not done it but a guy down the street is the authority on this. He has put the older porsche motors in the VW chassis with minimal effort - DR.DR.

3)   Well, the older Porsche boxer air cooled engines are VW engines.

Having had a 69 Beetle for my first car (not my choice), that's a pretty bum deal if you paid for the Porsche name.

A flat 6 probably won't fit without some serious massaging. - alfredb1979

4)   Look into Type IV engines. They are Porsche engines that will bolt up to a VW trans axle with the proper fly wheel (type IV to type I fly wheel)
They are 4 cylinders, but you can build a 2700 out of one. They are a bit bigger than a VW engine, but they will fit. It would require a Porsche fan shroud and intake too.
I have not tried to put a 6 cylinder Porsche engine in a bug yet, so I do not know about that application. - Rod Knocker

1)   wtf is a car? I ride the subway. - swedish.engineer

2)   Could you pick two worse SUVs to choose from?

Actually, no you can't.

IF you have a gun to your head and have to pick between these two, pick the Jeep.

Evidently, hubby hasn't priced VW parts yet or this decision would have been made already--and not in the VW's favor, either!

Good luck. - alfredb1979
