How much horsepower in a 1969 VW bug to keep up with a stock 2003 Corvette (Not Z06)?

Question 1
How much horsepower in a 1969 VW bug to keep up with a stock 2003 Corvette (Not Z06)?...  Just need to know how much horse power i need to put in my bug so i can shut up this douche bag who drives his vette to school all the time. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE corvettes. My dad used to have one, But this fool soils the good name of vette owners everywhere. I figured if we raced, and i gave him a good run for his money he would shut the hell up about how amazing his car is.

Answers
1)   the specs for the stock Vette from 03' factory made without turbo is 350-400 depending on whether its a V8 or V12...it all depends on the model and what the owner has the factory put in...so i'd say put anywhere between 360-400 horses in it...but you might require a wheelie bar as this much power/torque could cause a flip in such a small car...btw...respect to ya for saying he's a disgrace....cocky vette owners should not even be allowed to own the cars. - kyle w

2)   What the heck is up with Kyle W? Talking about turbos and V12 engines in regard to a stock Corvette? Hmmmm...

C5 Corvettes are actually pretty fast cars from the factory. A 350hp LS1 V8 in a 2-door sports car = a pretty fast package stock. But your Beetle is much lighter than a Corvette. If your car is built to handle the extra power and has good race components, you'll probably only need about 200-250hp to teach him a lesson. - Jefferson

3)   A beetle weighs 1900 pounds. A 2003 corvette weighs somewhere around 3250. So, a beetle would need 205 horsepower to have the same power to weight ratio. But the Vette has better gear ratios and better traction. So it is impossible to say. You may need 250hp and some other upgrades. That would probably let you beat him 0-60, but the faster you go, the more advantage he would have. - P12

4)   Phil.. it simply isn't going to happen.

1) You can stuff a huge engine into your bug and have a LOT of HP, but you would also have to tear out and replace the drive train because that transaxle is not designed to handle the stresses.

2) Replace the drive train and now you have transferred that stress to the suspension and steering gears (unless you plan to do 1/4 miles which pretty much wastes the VW),

3) Ok.. you also needed to upgrade the frame, right? because you, essentially, just doubled the weight of the car (the full factrory car weighs about 2000 lbs at best.. which includes a 200 lb engine. But you just stuffed in a power plant (engine and tranny) that prob. weigh at least 700 to 800 lbs.. and upped your suspension (and tires too - right?) for at least another 200. So you have added about 50% more weight. - Reinforcement or new frame time.

4) aerodynamics. Take alook at that bug.. Now take a look at the vette.. which one is going to have less wind resistance to over come. You will need to deal with that using spoilers and dams just to keep your powered up bug on the ground and pushing the wind out of the way

So, Phil, in the long run what you need to do is to buy your own vette, strip off the fiberglass and bolt on your vw. shell . He still has you in the wind department but race WITH the wind and you will edge him out.

All that sort of defeats the purpose - right?

But take heart.. a well restored bug is a magnet for the ladies.. so focus on that aspect...

5)   kyle w is a moron, don't listing to him. a stock c5 corvette is 350 to 370 horsepower. a way to beat him is to put in like a subaru, Volkswagen, or porshe motor in if you have some money. if you don't you can always go to a junkyard and pick up a 4 cylinder from a ford escort gt because they have richmond engines in them and they put out over 165 horse stock. and btw if you can get the money for the porshe engine, take the whole thing. don't hookup the stock drive train, you need to replace it no matter what and a porche one will fit great. - Ryley the car fanatic

6)   Be more realistic, the engine and trans in a VW are not set up to keep you in school, you need the power of a 911 Porsche w/ trans.
Better yet , get the Porsche then hope he has a manuel trans and that his shifting is slow.
Having owned a 69 VW that was a bad year for this maker, supplier and quality. - DR DEAL

Question 2
How many miles would be too high on a VW Golf SDI?...  It's a 99 mk5 golf sdi with 168,000 miles, good service history. Too many miles? 1,800 euro BTW
How many would I get out of her? (looking as a first car)

Answers
1)   thats actually not too bad.try to talk it down a little. - Robert B

2)   That is a high miler and puts you into lottery territory. If it has been looked after well and you do the same it could do another 100,000. Could easily need a new engine next week though.
Up to you if you fancy the gamble. - Timbo is here

3)   Hi,
That 1,9 diesel engine is a good model, powers Seat, Audi and others. Easily lasts 200,000 miles and more, so no, not too high a mileage.

The price may be a little high if it's a five door, see -
http://www.wisebuyers.co.uk/index.jsp?guide=prices&page=used_cars&no=3&make=Volkswagen&model=Golf+%281998-05%29&mmv=18441&yearplate=1999%2FT&mileage=168&x=45&y=4 - Bill

4)   Volkswagens are notorious for having nearly indestructible engines. The diesel is no exception. While it is forced induction, it's under low compression. Provided maintenance has been provided at the proper times and it's not been beaten, it sounds like a good deal.

You can, of course, expect to have some repairs, but you'll get that with nearly any used car. I'd say the car could last well into 250k and 300k miles so long as you continue to take care of it. - rx7ah

5)   As long as its been properly serviced they go on forever my mate has 1 with 388,000 miles and still going strong. Price is way too high though offer him 1200 - Deckiedance

Question 4
How many miles will a 1997 Volkswagon GTI last?...  I bought a 1997 VW GTI VR6 last year. I got it just to last me about 18 months. However I've kinda fell in love with the little car.

Its got 95,000 miles currently. The A/C and the cruise control have gone out. The driver side seat has some reclining issues as well, and I think the fuel pump may need replacing soon.

I don't have a lot of experience with VW. I'm wondering if the little thing is worth fixing. Its fun to drive, but I don't want a car I have to take into the shop as a regular thing. If I fix what's currently wrong, how many miles can usually be expected out of that kind of car?

Answers
1)   Dumb Q

How log this planet will last?? - goranvolvo

2)   Are you having regular maintenance done? If so; I would fix everything, because it will last a long time if it has. Take it to a shop and they will let you know where your car is at. - Mark

3)   With proper maintenance, and keeping it to a schedule and replacing parts are they are at the end of their life cycles, (timing belts, shocks, ...) the VW will easily go 250K to 300K.

I have seen MK1's with over 500K - Briano

4)   With enough parts and labor it will last forever. - Ken E

5)   The A/C was going out on mine as well, or so I thought. There's apparently a trick to charging the system that most mechanics don't know about. I'd take it to a dealer to have them fix the A/C. The cruise control is a VERY common problem among mkIII's. Mine has gone out. I've just lived with it. If you're beginning to have problems with the fuel pump, replacing the filter may be a tremendous help. My mkIII vr6 has 200k on it and I've loved every bit of it. I can honestly say that I couldn't want any car of comparable value. - rx7ah

Question 5
vw exhaust cats replaced?...  what will a 2.0L 2002 jetta sound like with straight pipes on in place of cats?

Answers
1)   hmm not too much different (might be a lil deeper) if you still have the mufflers a cat isn't very restrictive at all on a stock motor. - veedub514

2)   Cat. doesn't affect your performance and sound. By removing it, your yellow check engine light will come on. Your car will emit lots of pollutant too. If you want noise change your muffler. - monsieur joy

3)   Depending on where you live, as if you have emissions tests, it is illegal to remove your cats from the car. No Muffler shop that I know of will do it for you. - Briano

4)   I would stick with the cat and steer away from the straight pipes. At higher revs you will get a loud cackle. It will sound good idleing but once you start to get on the gas it will sound like crap. no to mention that eveyone will think you went the cheep way out. I would change the muffler. Stick with magnaflow or flowmaster. Yes I said flowmaster. Even though its more commonly used on v6 and v8's it really puts a good sound on the jetta both idleing and at higher revs. Also you can go for a complete system that may run you $$$$$$$ but I stick to the rule don'd put more in your car then its worth. So its your choice. - Jim S
