Why do new volkswagen beetles get less mpg than old beetles?

Question 1
Why do new volkswagen beetles get less mpg than old beetles?...

Answers
1)   More weight on the new VS old. - jason

2)   The engines were smaller - mauigirl

3)   No pollution controls, no catalytic perverter, Carbs, weight....

My old 67 MG Midget 1100CC engine would get 55mpg on the highway @ 65mph.

So would I rather drive a old MG or a Prius?
MG. - Briano

4)   The old ones were well designed to get good gas mileage to reduce the overall operating cost. They had smaller engines than the new ones (the biggest they put in there was a 1600). But probably the biggest reason is that the old ones weighed just over half what the new ones weigh, coming in under 2000 pounds, some under 1800 pounds. - Aircooled Chick

5)   they dont really get better mileage. my 1970 gets 25-26 mpg. a new vw beetle gets around 33mpg. my 75 bug gets 27. the owners manual for my 1970 says it gets 26.1 mpg and a new bug owners manual says 34 mpg. sooooo...... - Air-Cooled ACVW

Question 2
Fitting a Subaru engine into a VW Beetle?...  I'm wondering how hard it is to fit a new engine into a 1978 VW Beetle. What sorts of modifications need to be done? Will I need to replace other parts of the car, like suspension or transmission?

I want to be able to push my Bug a little more without being afraid of destroying it's sewing machine engine. Would it be better to just turbocharge the VW engine? Will that rip it apart?
I have a 1.5L engine in mine right now, and I'm looking for the most simple method.

I should probably keep a boxer engine, so maybe a Subaru Legacy engine?

On GEX.com, there are a few engines for sale, would that be cheaper then a used Subaru?

Answers
1)   With a bigger engine or just a stock? If you are talking about bigger, yes it will be hard. It may not even fit. But if you are just going to do a replcaement of the stock for a stcok it will be easy you just need a engine blocker to lift the engine. - diesel

2)   A Subaru engine is water cooled. You will have to fit a radiator and run coolant lines. This is a common swap on watercooled Vanagons/Transporters. - djaca70

3)   a swap like this is way to hard. just get yourself a nice 2180cc long block throw on dual 44 webers and you can run circles around a civic tuner. a 2180 or larger 2332. they are just 1600 motors with modified blocks and heads, cylinders and pistons that are used for drag racing old bugs. a nice 2332 turnkey can be picked up and installed yourself in 2 hours for $4700. thats a lot cheaper and easier than a subaru swap. plus you will get about the same amount of power. a subaru motor is a hell of a lot heavier, youd have to do a good deal of cutting and modifying to hold that it there. the radiator is another isseu. youd have to beef up the frame to hold the weight. use a totally different rear end and tranny. stick with a larger air cooled motor. you will be much happier and have a bigger bank account balance when its all said and done

Also would the insurance company come out and check the car for any modifications?

Answers
1)   Yes, unless you have an absolutely terrible driving record, you will be able to find insurance on your VW Golf, but it won't be cheap. The insurance agency probably won't 'come out' to check your car for mods, but they may ask you to bring it in to their office. - JetDoc

Question 4
Does anybody know why people hit each other when they see a VW beetle?...  I've been doing it since i was little but how did the hitting start?

Answers
1)   Its a game called slug bug - 67Bronco

2)   Slug bug started when an autistic young lad who barely spoke ever screamed "bug" over and over at his brother when he saw a VW beetle. Apparently he was a fan. The only way the normal brother could get the autistic kid to stop was to slug him in the teeth. The autistic kid associated the action with the punching, and every time he saw one he would say it and punch his brother in the teeth before his brother had a chance to hit him. It became tradition from there. - wangslanger2

3)   i've played this game since i was little too i dont know how it started but when ever my sister brother and i would c the car we would hit eachother and say " punch buggy, no punch backs". - AJ
