how to take pulley off vw generator?

Question 1
how to take pulley off vw generator?...

Answers
1)   Remove what is holding it on and then pull it off with a pulley puller - Timbo is here

2)   Use a high tork impact gun and a socket, don't use a vise it will damage the pulley. - Tyger

3)   undo the bolt on the front and pull it off - eat_931

4)   I assume you mean an old air cooled engine, because they have been using alternators since 1973 or so.

There is a large nut on the end of the shaft, that has to be removed.
You stop the pully from turning by using a screwdriver in a slot in the pulley.
Then the front half of the pully comes off.
There are shims between the pully halves.
The back half is supposed to then just slide off as well, but it is a close fit, and there is a woodruff key.
If it is rusty or not lubed, it could be tight.
Generally then what you do is to spray some wd40 on it, put removing pressur on it with either 2 screwdrivers, one on each side, or with a puller. Then with the nut back on, tap gently on inward on the center shaft.
The vibration should make it come loose.
Save the woodruff key. - Motorhead

Question 2
Why do American women like Volkswagens?...  I cannot speak for other cultures. But it seems here that women sure do like VWs, especially Jettas, but sometimes Golfs and also that New Beetle.

I'm not happy about the whole situation because I'm considering a VW Golf but because women love Volkswagens so much if i did get one i would be seen as driving a Chick's car.

So..why?
An Audi is a good alternative, thank you!
For everybody's information; Chick cars are:
Jeep Wrangler
Mazda MX5 Miata
BMW z3
SmartForTwo
Volkswagen Jetta and New Beetle
Toyota Corrolla.

Answers
1)   Hmmm... never thought gender would be attached to a car. I own many VWs and Audis, and I am a male. If you are that insecure, get some cojones, and buy a VW. - djaca70

2)   Get the GTI. It's not as girlly as the regular Golf. - GMan

3)   I drive an old Beetle. They're probably the manliest cars in existance. I'm a chick though, but they're not chick cars. I very rarely see any chicks driving them. - Aircooled Chick

4)   For your information no car is a chick car I am pretty sure that both men and women drive all those cars you put down. Women like what they like it's not a group decision its a personal choice. - uthockey32

Question 3
Why doesn't Volkswagen make the Golf a rear-wheel drive?...

Answers
1)   For modern small cars the front wheel drive configuration is the most efficient. This configuration can have a relatively small drive train package.

With the front wheel drive configuration the engine can be mounted transversely (sideways) in the engine compartment. With this configuration the engine bay can be shorter.

Also the transmission used in this configuration uses less room. With a rear wheel drive configuration the transmission is mounted behind the engine. This requires a large tunnel extending into the passenger compartment. This takes up precious interior space in the front seat area. You would have less leg room in a small car like this.

Next there is the issue with the drive shaft and rear differential. With a front wheel drive vehicle there is no drive shaft between the transmission and differential. The differential is integrated into the transmission. Most front wheel drive cars have the fuel tank located beneath the rear passenger seat. If this car were to be made rear wheel drive the fuel tank would need to be relocated, usually beneath the trunk. This would reduce the size of the trunk. Mostly because the spare tire could no longer be located in the well beneath the trunk. You would need to carry the spare tire inside the trunk, taking up precious cargo space.

Another advantage with front wheel drive is that the weight of the engine is located directly over the drive wheels. For most driving this greatly improves traction. I say for the most part because with front wheel drive under very extreme driving the front wheels can lose traction under very hard cornering and you could very easily lose control. However these extreme driving conditions would only be experienced in racing conditions. In street conditions you would never experience this.

There is one other disadvantage of front wheel drive. It doesn't work well in high horse power applications. With a high horse power application you can experience a condition called torque steer. However most small front wheel drive cars are economy cars. They do not make enough horse power to cause torque steer. Most of the higher horse power front wheel drive cars will have traction control and stability control to control torque steer. Small front wheel drive economy cars like the Golf make relatively low horse power so torque steer is not an issue.

The front wheel drive configuration is less expensive to manufacture and assemble. The entire drive line is contained in one small neat package. The entire drive line and front suspension are pre-assembled onto the front portion of the frame, called the K member. During assembly this complete package is lifted into the body from under the car which makes assembly faster with less steps. This efficient assembly process keeps the cost down keeping the price of the vehicle down.

With a small economy car like the Golf, the front wheel drive configuration is the most efficient. - Mad Jack

2)   front is more economical and safer design. - scaramonga

3)   FWD's are cheaper to make, lighter, and have less energy lost through the transmission because its not as large so they use less fuel than a RWD car, and also offer more space in the inside because theres no transmission tunnel sticking out of the floor. FWD handling characteristics are alot easier for most non car enthusiast's to drive in emergency situations as well making them safer.

The golf is hardly a sports car and most of its potential buyers just want a nice practical A to B car so FWD is the obvious choice. - Mat

Question 4
how much to make new keys?...  i have purchased a second hand VW GOLF MK4, I have recieved one key with it as the previous owner lost the other key, i have had the car for 6weeks now and would like t0 make a spare copy but do not know the price to make a spare copy, I have standard VW key the NON-remote key hence i heard it will be cheaper, where is the cheapest place to get key made and roughly how much for thanks

Answers
1)   you will have to take it to your nearest VW dealer only they will know how to make the correct keys for your car - English Angel

2)   If the vehicle was originally sold in the North American market, it originally came with three keys;
2 keyless entry keys & one Valet key (starts the car, opens the door but won't open the glove box or boot (trunk)).

A good quality locksmith can duplicate the key, but the least expensive way to purchase one is to go on Ebay get one. At the dealership the least expensive key is about $50 or so, without the keyless entry remote on it, but don't forget that it still needs to be programmed either by the dealership or a VW specialist with the VAG scan tool and software. Keys on Ebay without the remote feature can be bought for under $11 USD before shipping and used remote keyless entry remotes with a new uncut key can be bought for as little as $40 and up. I'm not sure about how prices are where you are, but around my area of California, independent locksmiths want about $30 to $40 per key (no keyless entry feature), plus charges to programme the keys to the car. Don't forget that if you purchase a key on Ebay, you still need to have the key cut. Some dealerships and locksmiths won't cut a key that they didn't supply, so keep that in mind. Where I used to be, we charged $25 to cut a "lazer" cut key, if you supplied the key. Before purchasing a key on Ebay, call around and see what the charges will be to cut one. Sometimes, you're better off just getting it at the dealership and avoiding all the hassle just to save a few dollars...

Expect to spend about one hour of labour at the posted rate to programme the keys at the dealership; some independent VW shops charge less than that, some more.

Hope this helps, a car nut. - a car nut

3)   If you have not got the black plastic tag that has the security information on which is supplied from factory then your only option is getting vw to supply you a new key with a programmed immobiliser chip. Replacement keys cost £70 which includes programming from vw as they have to be ordered from Germany if you haven't got the tag as they will have the relevant codes stored on there computer data base.
A Remote key supplied and programed costs £120 from Vw uk.
I have heard a mobile vehicle lock smith can cut key from a customer to which they have a chip Machine that can clone a working key for a lot cheaper. Try Key Response. They have plenty of agents across the uk search on Yell.com. - turboextreme

Question 5
The VW lease turn in fee is waived if you buy or lease another volkswagen...?...  Well, that's what all of the brochures said. Then I went to the dealership, gave them my lease, and bought a new VW. Although waiving the fee wasn't the only thing that got me to do business with VW again, it was a contributing factor. Now a month later I'm being charged a turn-in fee. They say it's because the dealership used Chase to finance instead of VW Credit, but nothing in all the shiny full-color materials they sent me specified this. Can they DO this? They can be assured I won't be a customer a third time.

Answers
1)   Did you read your lease contract prior to signing? Yes, it is a long document, but in essence this is your fault. - djaca70

2)   I bought a SEAT. Same chasis as a VW, same engine, hey its even got the same dash and steering wheel. The main difference is it was several thousand pounds cheaper, allowing me to afford to finance the car myself (not a lease). I'll pay 230 a month for 4 years, but the car will be mind at the end.

Anyway, to answer your question. You should have a 48 hour 'cooling off' period in which you can change your mind. - Jamie

3)   Financed cars is more expensive to insurance cause it requires full coverage. You can compare how much you would pay for full coverage of this car using this tool - carquotes.fateback.com - Victor
