Question 2
1997 VW Passat Problem?...  Currently experiencing problems with my central locking/electrics, I everytime I lock my car it then unlocks itself an the drivers side window lets itself down. Has anybody experienced this problem and if so what was causing the problem and the work needed to fix it.

Answers
1)   Call a priest and get it exorcised. - ▐▀▀☟▀▀▌ ☞βḭŁŁ☜ ▐▄▄☝▄▄▌

2)   If the locks are opening up immediately again I will because one door is not locking fully, could be anyone of them and this could be down to a few things including one of the latches needing adjustment or maybe a door switch not operating correctly and telling the control unit a door is still open.
The window should be a seperate problem and only srtipping the door down to find it will help. - Timbo is here

3)   you have to take the drivers side switch panel apart and clean all the contacts in the switch. It's all gummed up and sticking! - Bob S

4)   the lock barrel is sticking. remove it, grease it & refit. the window goes down & door opens because it is sticking in the open position. Try moving with the key. - Howthebldyhellru

5)   Yes it could be a door not working but it could also be you boot lock and it could be if you have one a locking petrol flap. the window could be connected with the problem or the wiring in the drivers door is shortening out. causing wires to get feeds if all locks are ok then check wiring going through bulkhead to drivers door. - jock

6)   i would go for the driver lock that's what was wrong with my sons car - c5

Question 3
Have you ever heard of the 1973 Volkswagen Sport Beetle?...  I found a guy who wants to trade his beetle for my my motorcycle. He doesn't really know anything about bugs as he bought this one for his step daughter and she "disrespected" him, so now he's selling it. I am fairly sure it is a Sport Beetle and he has no idea. It is yellow, (they only came in yellow or blue) and it has the correct ugly steering wheel. Only 5000 were produced for the American market. So does this make it much more valuable than a common bug? It's in great shape. He spent thousands on correct German parts and it only needs paint and a few minor details. I am ashamed to say my bike is only worth about 1200 tops, but he is willing to trade.

Answers
1)   all i can say is any man who will take and sell his kids car to get even isnt much of a man.step daughter or not, thats his kid.hey toes get stepped on in families.this is not the way to solve that issue.that says, who cares.its worth more than your bike even if its yellow. - idontgivafork

2)   family issues aside a decent BUG in stock trim will sell for around 4k. Thanks Oil guys! look under the engine in the rear as long as its not a mess you got a good deal, if it is a mess, well they are easy to work on. Its not a "sport" as much as a "Super Beetle" the Super Beetle has Macpherson struts on the front and the Trunk area is a little more rounded. Awesome fun cars with unlimited potential! - HHMM

3)   If you want it , trade! The super spud wasn't as good as the standard Beetle, but they were ok. It sounds like it was took care of, so ya can't go wrong. Do yourself a favor, pick up a "How to Keep Your VW Alive" by Muir, a must have for all air cooled owners. As far as valuable, not so much, but if it's in good shape, you can always double your money by re-selling it if you don't like it - Bob S

4)   Yeah, here's a page on the sports bug:
http://www.sebeetles.com/sport.htm
Lots of other special editions listed there as well:
http://www.sebeetles.com/contents.htm

IMO, the many special edition beetles aren't any more prized than any regular beetle of the same year because there really wasn't much to them besides some stripes, wheels, a steering, shift knob, etc. Very simple dealer stick on items pretty much and most of them wear out quickly if it was daily driven. But find the right person out there and you'll find someone willing to pay a premium for it though. That said, if it's in MINT condition, it would probably fetch a bit more.
I'd still jump on that trade because if it's in good shape it's worth a few thousand or definitely more than the bike. - Jay S

5)   On the surface it is an excellent trade since a bug in good condition is easily worth the value of your bike and a bug in great condition will bring several thousand.

BUT...

Having said that you need to look for the things that make a bug 'less' then good an potentially make it worthless.

1) Rust.. those years had rust problems on the rear body below the left and right sides of the rear window as the result of a piece of foam that was stuffed in there to muffle the sound and minimize the drafts. The result was moisture that rusts from the inside out. It can only be reached by cutting the body open. Not good. Check for bubbles in the paint below the window.

2) More Rust...look at the base of the door jambs where the body pan meets the doors and the frame. Rust there is also deadly since it is a structural element of the bug. Check the body pan too although that is repairable with panels.

3) Engine: Check that it is not making noise on acceleration (valves OR knocking) that is not good and a new engine will run you about $1000 to $2000 on top of the car cost. Easily done, but you have to factor in the cost for a good comparison.

4) Lastly, the tranny.. check to see if there is noise and if you can easily downshif into first. Those are the first indicators of the tranny going south. After 40 years of wear and tear the tranny is about due to go and it is a bit harder to replace then anything else on the bug.

So, as the old saying goes: 'other then that, Ms. Lincoln' how did you like the show? " if you buy it you will enjoy it as much as the bike. - ca_surveyor

Question 5
Should I get a VW bus?...  Ever since I was five I've wanted one. I point their beauty out to who ever I'm with at the time if I see one on the road, and I spend free time searching them on Craig's list. So basically I'm in love with a type of automobile and I want one really bad. However, I'm only 16, I don't have much money and I hear they are quite a job to maintain. My parents disapprove, but what do you think? Can my dream live on?

Answers
1)   Be aware that for the most part they are old and are going to require a lot of maintenance. Even one that's been restored.

On the other hand, considering you are sitting in front of the wheels, it can be fun to drive.

I would suggest you hold on to your dream but wait 'till you can afford a bus as a second vehicle. - Phil

2)   Look for one thats had a rebuilt engine and transaxle. Beware of rust all along the bottom, reject any car with it. You should try driving one before you buy it. They handle like a brick and are as slow as a slug, have no heat to speak of and noisy. - stephen c

3)   I think you should Absolutely get one; but maybe you should wait until you are a little older and better equipped to handle the expensive repairs. They will still around in a few years and will still be just as beautiful!! - Holly

4)   well honestly in my opinion its not a great car for a young girl. they can require lots of maintenance that you're gonna have to fix by yourself. unless you like, and are able to do this than by all means look for one and consider getting it. old air-cooled's need a lot more tlc then newer cars. every 3000 miles you NEED TO: change oil, gap plugs, check and adjust valve clearance, check timing, check fan belt for damage (replacing a broken belt can happen at any time and its necessary to do before driving to prevent severe engine damage). small electrical problems and minor mechanical problems seem to come at the most inopportune times. its good to have the know-how to fix these problems on the side of the road. fuel pumps always seem to like to fail on major highways at rush-hour.

if you take care of it properly it should be relatively cheap to maintain and give you years and 1000s of miles of worry free operation

lets talk power, how old of a bus were you thinking? typical 60's split tops out at about 65 mph. gets about 20 miles per gallon and pushes 51hp at 3900rpm. with a 1500cc flat four plant. typical 70's bus with a 1700cc motor tops out at a whopping 78mph. acceleration in any air-cooled vw is slow. 0-60 in a bus...about a year...probably more like 35-40secs. - Air-Cooled ACVW
