Question 2
My VW golf tdi 52 cuts out at junction's, has this happened to anyone else?...  It only happens at random times, so i cant say if its because the car is cold or hot. I have the car regularly serviced.
I would be driving up the road get into secound gear and then slow down as I am either coming to traffic lights or a junction and the car just stops. I have to turn the car over for sometime before it starts. Has this hapened to you and what was the solution?

Answers
1)   if its been cold where you are diesel has proberbly frozen in the lines and filter when it thaws out it leaves a glue type of messy residue partialy blocking things, try a new diesel filter or get lines and injectors cleaned. - John

2)   this happens if the wrong spark plugs are fitted or when the throttle valve is dirty and doesn't close properly when you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal, on modern cars the fuel is cut off when you lift your foot to slow down and if the throttle is not properly closed due to dirt the car will not pick up again when you come to a stop - Harley Drive

3)   The ECU (car's brain) controls the tick over and hundreds of other engine adjustments. The only way to find the problem is to take it to a VW dealership and ask them to investigate. They will connect it to a diagnostic machine that should analyse the fault. There is no manual adjustment for tick over or throttle these days. The mighty chip does it all. - BARRY

4)   i would have to say i fix these and have not yet come across this one although i would recommend checking the fuel tank for any dirt or blockages in pipes i had one do this but an audi
also this will most likely be a fuel related fault possibly the pump fuel cut off
(or even the chip key for immobilizer ) but
i must stress that you take it to a garage for a thorough check over and a diagnostic check ,this should give you some answers - SHAHID

5)   I would have the fuel filter replaced, and only run good fuel! It sounds like you got some truck stop fuel! Run only Shell and BP diesel, it has the highest cetane levels! - Bob S

Question 5
Is my VW considered "air cooled"?...  I have a 1987 VW Golf of America. I believe that its considered air cooled. I know it uses the radiator fan to cool it because I always here it turn on when the car gets hot. Anyone know?

Answers
1)   It has a radiator, but it has a radiator fan to cool down the radiator. It's not air-cooled. - TheMechanic

2)   It is water cooled and the radiator is proof of that. Early VW's were air cooled like the Beetle and Micro-Bus - DynaFlowHum

3)   No. If it has a radiator it is water cooled not air cooled. - T.J.

4)   no, if an engine uses a radiator it is an watercooled engine - MR pointy head

5)   VW stopped manufacturing 'air cooled' engines many years ago in most countries/markets.
All Golfs, Jettas, Boras, GTIs, New Beetles, Passats, Touregs, Tiguans, etc. are water-cooled.
The fact that you have a radiator [it is filled with water and a chemical coolant , usually a 50/50 ratio] means that your Golf is water-cooled.
Hearing the fan [its electrically operated] come on is usually normal. The air flow when the fan is on helps keep the water in the radiator cool.
Be sure you keep an eye on the water level in the radiator. If it gets too low, you can damage the engine.
My suggestion would be to get a Manual for your Golf. Either the owner's manual or a similar Repair Manual. Many costly repairs can be avoided by reading/knowing how to maintain a vehicle.
I had an 86 Golf which I kept for 14 years. It never let me down.
Hope this helps..... Thanks for the question, it lets me help others, and isnt that what its all abt? - fenton
