redline stock vw bug 1600cc engine?

Question 1
redline stock vw bug 1600cc engine?...  duel port heads duel carbs 1600cc motor redline where??

Answers
1)   Redlines at 6?

I would spend some bucks to go buy a dashboard tach for your Bug. - A.J.

2)   personally i wouldnt put it any higher than 5250-5500. they are air cooled and made to run hot and at high rpm but like any motor its not good to run full throttle for a long time. its best to just change gears at the lines marked on the speedometer. 1-2 at 15mph, 2-3 at 30 mph, and 3-4 at 45+ mph. - Air-Cooled

3)   I've got a tach on my bus and let me tell you that at 3800rpm it's time to shift, some times I'll go up to 4500rpm but only when there's a big rig coming from behind.
Stick to the shift marks on the speedo, there in place for a reason and it's for the engine to last. - DR DEAL

4)   with the stock cast crank i wouldn't rev it past 4500rpms because of crank flex. - jack

5)   A stock beetle 1600cc dual port engine will start to float it's valves at 4500 RPM's. - Chirco.com

Question 3
Why are there so many questions about VW?...  I see umpteen questions about VW's, is it because they are cr4p, they go on for longer, cheap to buy, or what.
It certainly is not that they are cheap to maintain.
The question means relative to all other marques. Many others are also as mass produced but none has the same number of questions.

Answers
1)   possibly because people have high expectations of the quality they are supposed to have down to the inflated prices they fetch - for some years now the once high quality has just bnot been there it seems - Timbo is here

2)   Could be something to do with the fact you're in the Volkswagen section. - "isitme"

3)   One excellent reason is that VW sells 6.4 Million cars a year. Thats quite a customer base. Considering that fact a few posts on Yahoo is inconsequential. What percentage is that? Maybe .0005 % of people desiring help with cars that are sometimes 10 years old.
So that means abt. 90 some % of VW buyers are happy.
Plus , car magazines often praise VW quality. For example, Automobile Magazine voted GTI Car of the Year. They bought one and tested/flogged it for a year. One year later, they stated not one single problem
My wife and I have been driving VWs for over 20 years. Currently we own a Jetta and a GTI. Both cars are ultra-reliable. Neither has ever let us down.
Contrary to what some believe, VWs are a joy to maintain! We have over 60,000 reliable and free of worry miles on them. The only things we have done maintenance-wise is change oil/filter. My friends who own VWs back this up . Myth debunked!
Are VWs perfect? Of course not. There are some years and models I would shy away from. Overall, though I remain loyal to VW.
So hope Ive cleared up some mis-conceptions abt. these wonderfully engineered, safe, fun to drive cars. - fenton

4)   Well as a driver of various new VW's over the last 10 years, golfs, jettas, and currently a top of the line passat, i would say the quality / finish is still top notch.

I have done over 200,000 miles in 0 - 3 year old VW's and have never been left stranded, if they do break they generally go into limp mode to get you home.

All these people that say the are rubbish are possibly slating something which they cannot afford / never actually lived with, all types of cars suffer with the odd 'built on a friday afternoon' issue. Most forums are geared towards cars with issues and not thousands of people praising their faultless car.

Where does the expensive to maintain rumour come from, mine usually costs £ 250.00 every 20K miles and then the usual extra for belt changes etc etc. Not that expensive at all.

If i ever get an issue with my car i ring up the dealer, he books me in, makes me a nice coffee, gives me the keys to a new golf and say thay will ring me when its done. They even valet my car for me before handing back...........................FANTASTIC SERVICE.

I also have a MK 1 golf GTI, which is still as solid as they day it drove out of the showroom, there are still 20+ year old VW's everywhere, how many old fords, vauxhalls, renaults do you see - NOT MANY - PHIL B

Question 4
i have 2003 VW passat 1.8 and the catalytic converter is bad can i gut it out?...
why is a catalytic converter so expensive i called just the converter is like $700.00 thats crazy

Answers
1)   yes but you will fail emissions and help kill the ozone - njschriver@sbcglobal.net

2)   Probably still under warranty with the dealer check with them. Those cars come with a 10 year warranty on the cats I think. - heybeerme

3)   Sure as a temperary fix to restore proper exhaust flow.

Do you know how?

Make three cuts in the bottom of the catalytic converter with your wheel grinder or acetylene torch.
Only cut three sides of a square/rectangle shape! Allow the converter to cool, as it will be very hot. When you are comfortably able to handle the converter, use the crowbar or chisel to fold down the "flap" you have created.
Use the hammer and the chisel or crowbar to begin breaking up the ceramic inner part of the catalytic converter. This usually looks like a honeycomb. The honeycomb should break up rather easily, and fall out of the hole
Using your hand or a pair of pliers, bend the flap you have bent down back to it's original position. There will be a considerable gap where you have made the cut. Put on all safety gear/eye wear and begin welding over the cut with the welder on a medium to med/high setting. When you have completely finished welding, start the engine. If the exhaust seems loud, or there is a "hissing" sound, you probably still have a very small leak around your welding. This can be corrected either by re-welding or using a cold-weld type of epoxy specifically designed for automotive exhausts. - Michele

4)   Legally, no. And, though your performance might improve, you'll fail any smog check and compared to a fully functional cat, performance will be less.

These days, everything is engineered to work together. Changing the performance of one item, affects other items. Your exhaust system is designed to have a certain amount of backpressure in it,
Also, depending upon the current milage and age of your vehicle, you might still be under warranty; you'll need to take into the dealership to have it checked and see if coverage still exists. There is an extended warranty on some years of VW's for cat coverage depending upon when it was originally sold or placed in service. You'll need to have it checked, but, you can go to http://www.vwvortex.com to check for information on your vehicle.

Hope this helps, a car nut. - a car nut
