Is 150,000 miles too much for a vw caravelle executive 2007?

Question 1
Is 150,000 miles too much for a vw caravelle executive 2007?...  I am about to buy a vw caravelle executive..and the only thing hold me back is the milage. The vw is cheap and full vw service history plus all milage seems to be done on motorway...by the look of the front bonet there is plenty of chiped paint which normaly occurs on motorways.
The inside is as good as new....but its the milage

Answers
1)   never look at mileage but check for shape

how to check used car

wil get a checklist to help look for problem signs - kelly_f_1999

2)   If it's been regularly serviced it should be fine.
Have a nice trip. (join the AA) - boshnpecs

3)   normally I would say mileage doesn't matter as long as its been looked after, but for a car only 2yrs old .... its not too good!! - scottee

4)   It does not matter so much if the engine is diesel but if it is petrol then that is very high milage for a vehicle which is just 2 years old. On the other hand though the millage should be reflected in the price and make it considerably cheaper then other 2 year old vehicles.

5)   I'm reasonably sure that the Executive was only fitted with the five cylinder 130 or 174 BHP engines not the 1.9. It is a very big mileage in two years, and if you intend to do loads of miles then I would say it is not the vehicle you. However if you are only a light mileage user then there's no problem, 150K is nothing on either the 1.9 or 2.5 engines it's just having been used mainly on motorways and doing hot miles the 130 or 174 is best suited to high-speed cruising and if it has a full VW (genuine) service history, also is the remainder of the 3-year warranty is still in force. I have owned two Volkswagen T5's and they are an excellent vehicle. If you're not sure join the AA and get a vehicle inspection done, £100 now could save you thousands if it is iffy! Good luck which ever way you choose, Cheers, Gizz. - Gizzard Puke

6)   I wouldn't touch it with a fuckin barge pole love. Sounds like it was never off the road. - Tina Malone

7)   That's quite high mileage for a 2007, but if that kind of mileage was put in in merely 2 years, it was mostly highway. Do check to make sure nothing's about to break. I'm not too sure about the watercooled Volkswagens on what breaks and when, but I am sure you can find something online. Also, look at what you need it for. If you are going to put another 150K on it, then don't get it. If it's a diesel, it's barely broken in, you probably have another 400K left before it goes. - Prime

fastback:

do fastbacks catch fire easily as well?

Answers
1)   Are we talking old school square back? Like 25 years old or more? If so, we're talking traveling fire bomb. VW square backs of old catch fire. Used to see them all the time on the side of interstate burned out. Bad fuel lines. - Walley235

2)   I like the square back style but the fastback had a more powerful engine from the factory, fuel injected if my memory is correct. They are both great classic cars. - the ducks guts

3)   Chelsea shalom, the fastback is the way to go, much better charisma, the squareback has more room, but room is for Girlscouts. - 20G8J8FY

4)   There are 3 versions of this VW.
The fast back.
The saloon (or sedan) with a boot front and rear.
The Variant, or estate car which I think you and other people on here are calling the square back.
They were all the same mechanically, year for year.
I had a new Variant back in the 60's but I wouldn't really want one now, even though it was very nice to drive at the time.
They never had a reputation for catching fire in the UK. - TATRAFAN

5)   I don't remember these having fuel or fire trouble.I vote for the square back. You will have a wider resale market when you decide to get another toy car.The square back will attract buyers with families. They too could enjoy an older car and take the kids along also.
We had a 1967wagon..Mom decided to take our neighbor and her 4 kids and the 5 of us kids as well as Homer the dog to the countryside for a summer swim.It was very hot and crowded. But the car didn't complain. - Hey You

6)   These cars catch fire the same amount as the old beetles and. There is a grommet that wears out in the back and cuts through the fuel line. If the car is well maintained this should not be a problem.

If I had my choice it would go like this:

1: notchback

2: squareback

3: fastback

The notchback is probably the hardest to find of the three.
This makes it a little more desirable.

To me the fastbacks are kind of unusual looking.

All three are pretty cool and game for the exact same modifications. Get the one you like the looks of.

I personally like that blue squareback you are looking at. The fastback might be too expensive. - dubdubious1

Question 3
How does the VW New Beetle handle in the snow?...  I am thinking about buying a vw new beetle. I live in WI and we have bad winters sometimes. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how they handle in the snow?
Thanks

Answers
1)   it handles like a drunk horse. - Geoff

2)   if you want good handling..always go for AWD like in the subarus, low center of gravity (no trucks or suv's), or a front wheel drive car, like ford focus, nissan sentra etc..

rear wheel drive vehicles are the worst in snow. 4wd are ok, but not great..its a big myth that they can through anything.. but FWD cars are the best! - Fu

3)   I had a old 02 Golf, basically same car as the New Beetle with a different body.

Get a set of dedicated winter tire/wheel setup. 15" steel wheels with 195/65r15 tires is the best combination to go with. Michelin X-ICe2 is supposed to be an excellent "studless" snow tire. I used Nokian in the past, as well as Green Diamond remolds (the carbide chunks in them makes a huge difference), and on the cheap end, (Firestone) Winterforce. With snow tires, I got everywhere w/o AWD, including some of the steepest, snow-covered roads in Vermont (ski season). - cant_think_of_1

4)   They're not that good, believe me. The aircooleds are better than a 4x4 pickup. I know, I have four aircooled Beetles, as well as a 2005 Ford Ranger, and live in a hilly, snowy area. - Prime

5)   I had a 2006 hard top beetle for two years through two winters here in the upper plans part of the country. We never got stuck once and that included 3 snowfalls of 1ft+. Didn't switch to snow tires or anything. The wide wheel base and weight of the vehicle make it a pretty good car for winter.
I drove this coming from a 1996 Dodge Neon, so even a moped would have been better in winter than that.
We now have a 2008 Beetle Convertible that we have driven through one winter without problem. We did get stuck trying to start from a stop uphill on ice, but who won't have some problems with that.
I had a 2007 Jetta and a 2009 Rabbit through a couple winters and both of them did very well with a manual transmission - Ron Porkmore

Question 4
i have a 73 vw super beetle (with all wheel drum brakes) and they are out of adjustment how can i do fix them?...  ok so i have all wheel drum brakes on my 73 super beetle and they are way out of adjustment. im not sure how to go about fixing them my father in law says there is an air leak but there are no signs of a leak. then i found out they were out of adjustment the pedal goes to the floor. i had a friend adjust the front brakes a little it helped a little but how do i fix them all together?

Answers
1)   if memory serves me correctly, the old beetles have "star adjusters" on all 4 wheels. they have one "star" for EACH shoe. you have to either go from the rear of the backing plate or thru the front of the drum with a "brake spoon" to adjust each shoe independently. if the adjusting slot is on the front of the drum, there should be a small round rubber cover thats pressed into the drum. you have to remove it to see the "star" adjusters. the covers are either on the front of the drum or on the back side of the backing plate.

if this dosent help the problem, you MAY need to check further, (check the wheel cylinders, steel brake lines AND the master cylinder). if you DO have any leaks and the brake fluid is on the shoes, you MUST replace them. they are contaminated and will NOT work any longer. do NOT try to sand down the shoes to get the fluid off them, as this will NOT help. once fluid is on the shoes, it seeps all the way thru the shoes to the metal backing........ again, you MUST replace the shoes.

hope this helps. - bigmountainman4

2)   Here is a link for how to adjust the brakes. Its really simple, I need to do mine today actually. THe 1st time is fustrating because you may do them backwards (meaning loosen them) But I will provide a picture on how to make sure you dont loosen them.

How to adjust:

Direction of the stars to tighten/loosen:

The arrow on top of the pics represent pointing to the front. Hope these help - vwbuggin64

3)   Sounds like you have a brake fluid leak.I would have the car towed to your mechanic. If you are not sure about the adjustment you will not be able to repair the leak yourself. If the pedal is going to the floor do not chance driving it for your own safety and that of your fellow motorists. - Hey You

4)   Paul as owner of many kinds of VWs this sounds more like the master cylinder. The adjustment would have some effect but not one that last. After the repair did the peddle go to the floor ? if so then it's the master.
The adjustment would have been held at the top for a few seconds. Then slowly goes down ? Master.
If the above was correct as far as what the peddle is doing then "Master"
There would be no air leak without fluid squirting from the spot.
Best bet if your not mechanical is have it done, go to the local VW shop. This way you can get the wheel cyl's checked as well. - DR DEAL

Question 5
what is the best engine to swap into a 1969 vw bug?...  now i know with any engine swap that there is going to be some conversion but what engine would be the easiest to do with the most amount of hp

Answers
1)   You can always go bigger. Those engines were pretty interchangeable with little conversion necessary.

I do remember someone who somehow (don't ask me how) crammed a Chevy 327 into a bug. The only reason that thing didn't do much better than 10s in the 1/4 mile was because it was hard to keep the wheels on the ground.

Good luck! - plastic

2)   There are many VW part and engine suppliers in California.I remember one that would sell you a turbo-charged VW engine for about $3k with 200hp.That is a lot of power for a bug.Google the internet or get some VW magazines online or at the store.VW trends is one.Their advertisers are looking for you. - Hey You

3)   the conversion thats easiest would be an old porsche 911 engine. there is not to much construction work that needs to be done to put a 911 or even a 911 turbo engine in. look at forums on the samba for help and tips as well.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/ - Air-Cooled

4)   Air-cooled is right.
Paul Newman did this in Shaker Heights, OH ages ago.
He would roll around in his beetle and race people.
The old 911 engine should bolt right up to the beetle - Ron Porkmore
