20w 50 good for old car?

Question 1
20w 50 good for old car?...

Answers
1)   not unless you live on the equator/or its a cab/you need good lubrication use 10w30 and thats it/the heavy stuff builds sludge - ken k

2)   if you meen wats as in (horse power to wats) no its terible 1 hp makes 745.7 wats (average car makes 100 hp) - golden_sonic

3)   For an old VW, like with any car, the oil type should be suited to meet your needs. The lower the first number, the better the cold viscosity. Ie: 20 is high, so it would be fine if you were in a warmer climate, but not if you were anywhere it might get cold (Canada or the northern United States). 50 is for better oil performance at higher temperatures as well. - Eric

4)   20W50 is great for those buses that have hydraulic valves, this keeps the oil up in the tubes so that you don't get a clacking noise when you start up.
Other then this and hot weather go with the 10w30 or 10W40 this is for the air cooled engines. - DR DEAL

5)   20w-50 is good for worn ol engines, or motors that are air cooled cause they hold up to head better and the oil cools the parts cause it sticks to them easily.

Also, a good brand of straight 30wt can be used or added to lower weight oil to make it thicker. - Chris

Question 2
Found out my volkswagen polo is cat d?...  I bought a yellow colour concept volkswagen polo from a garage about a week ago. I have recently found out that the car was made cat d in 2003!
The garage i bought it off did not tell me that the car was a write off, is there anything i can do? I still have a one month guarantee with the garage.

Answers
1)   You can take it back by all means and try to get some money back - or you could threaten them with legal action - but YOU would have to prove they did not tell you.

On the better side - CAT D - is nothing - it could have been written off for a damaged or smashed bumper..........honest!!!

I bought a CAT D Rover 216 - it was written off because the front bumper took a hit and the lights were smashed. That was it.

Second hand bumper and lights from the local scrapyard for £50 and a little time fitting them and the car was road worthy again....if it passes it's MOT's then nothing to worry about.. - jamand

2)   A car can be a write off for example if all glass has been smashed by vandals. The insurance say that it is uneconomic to replace all glass, a guy buys it and goes to the scrappies and gets all secondhand glass and replaces it all. The car is OK there are no problems. We have a peugeot 405 that was hit by a truck, not hard but it damaged the wing and a window. It was only the fact that the agent offered to repair it cheap that saved it from the scrappies. That was some 7 years ago. We still have the car and it is still OK.
You have no recourse in law as they supplied a street legal and safe car in that it was MOT'd etc. - rinfrance

3)   A Cat D is only a write-off for financial reasons. If it costs more to repair than the insurers are prepared to pay at full commercial rates given the value of the car, that's what they do. It's perfectly repairable and they usually are. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the car.

It may well be better than before the accident/incident . . . - Bardic

4)   Cat D is nothing.I bought a Mercedes C240 with 40,000 miles and full Mercedes service history which was a cat D.I have been in the motor trade all my life, although now retired and have failed to find any repaired damage on the car.All panels are original and there is no body filler on the car.Perhaps it was stollen, then recovered. - Arlanymor

Question 3
need to know about a 2001 jetta?...

Answers
1)   Don't get one, all you need to know - evan

2)   Can you be more specific, what do you need to know ? - DR DEAL

3)   1.8T and 2.0 engines need a timing belt replacement and water pump replacement when they get up there in terms of mileage. VR6 uses a chain so no need for a replacement, not sure about water pump. The 1.8t should be warmed up before driving, and cooled down after, helps prolong the life of the turbo. VR6 is the fastest and most powerful, then the 1.8t which can easily be modded to out perform the 6cyl. The 2.0 is economical but slow. And just in general like all German cars, treat them right and they'll return the favour. - gocanuckzgo

Can I still buy OEM badges from dealerships?...  I have a 1992 Volkswagen Golf GTI. I'd like to replace some of the badges on the car. I was wondering if you can still buy the original badges at any Volkswagen dealer? Anyone know? Thanks!

1)   They will either have them in stock or can order them - look online (www.jcwhitney ??) for them; may be cheaper - not 2 B fooled

2)   Yes you can, just some might be special order, which can take up to a couple weeks to get it.

L - Prince$$

3)   VW does not keep stock over 10 yrs and 92 is pushing , well 17 yrs.
Most likely they will tell you to go to local junk yard or after market. - DR DEAL

Question 5
vw jetta as a starter for a 16 year old?...  should i get a vw jetta i dont realy car a bout repairs longs as it is less than a 1997 malibu it has been to the shop 8 times this year and has a booming stock system
i like the and gime things that ill have to worry about in the and how many people can it fit comforable like 5 people lik 5/8 and down

Answers
1)   I personally was considering a Jetta but decided against it due to high initial cost, poor reviews/experiences when they do break down and the general Lack of reliabiliy. With the current recession it shouldn't be too hard to find a good deal on a more reliable and newer import. I personally bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla S and love it. - Eric

2)   what year jetta? my girlfriend has a 2002 jetta with 130,000 miles and it runs great the only issue is with the alarm system, it goes off sometimes when its hot. you can fit 5 people pretty comfortably in it - yankeefan1124

3)   First and foremost, you will ALWAYS have a better build quality in German vehicles and Japanese vehicles. ALWAYS I don't care if you had a great Buick or your old Impala still gets you to work just fine (BTW I said cars not trucks...I am not knocking your F-150).
The foreign factories set higher and more stringent quality control standards when they are manufacturing their products. As a matter of fact, the third generation Volkswagen Jetta's production was set back due to unsatisfactory quality of the cars being built in their new factory in Mexico. They finally began manufacturing the Jettalll in Mexico in 1993 (the cars were for the U.S.).
The foreign cars have tighter tolerances in their engines...basically they will last longer. Not to mention, most of the time they are very efficient and their parts are stronger.
The best foreign cars are Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Subaru. If you do not believe me...check your Consumer Reports.
The American cars quality has gotten better, but let's be honest they are still falling short to the imports.
To answer your qustion, I have a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo that has blown a headgasket at 27k miles. However, my 1994 Volkswagen Jetta has around 160k miles, does not leak a drop of any fluids and still has its original clutch. The mileage is unbelievable. I rarely give this car any maintenance other than an oil change and serpentine belt every 60k.
Honda is the most reliable car ever made...point blank period.
But a Volkswagen is solid, and is a very nice car, as well. Very nice for a 16 year old.
However...if it does ever need to get fixed, it will cost you quite a bit...(just being honest!) - josh
