A: Jerry Garcia is dead.
B: Learn to spell.
C: Paint and stereos don't build a car.
D: How's it feel to know you have everything you want on a silver platter?

They have all the original paint/interior colors listed in the technical section. You're sure to get other ideas there even if you don't want it original.

Why don't you concentrate on the brakes and steering first, then make it run right.

The older VW vans (microbus, Type 2) are great to start out with. Before you jump into picking out matching interiors, you need to make sure mechanically it is sound. It would suck to have you have a beautiful car just parked in your driveway. You need to look for rust, look at the steering, how it shifts, brakes, engine. Ill include a link for "how to buy a Volkswagen." Now if its a newer vw van, how do you feel about the Honda or Toyota vans? I hear they are nice. Paint it however you want. If you are a purist (one who keeps to VW factory standards) then use the www.thesamba.com link. If you just want a cool ride and are not looking to restore it, paint it and do the interior however you want. Its your car. Some good ideas/places to go are car shows, www.thesamba.com, or just google the Type 2. Good luck and have fun with it.

I had a 1953 ford rag top lined up for my first car in 1966.
Dad bought me a 54 sunroof oval window beetle and I was "like what are you thinking?"

Well I never had so much fun in my life and eventually went on to become a registered VW mechanic - little blue book and all.

So; names;;

big blue bus
well you get the idea

Have as much fun as you can and get a good one.

I'm getting a 2005 VW New Beetle convertible, will there be an Ipod hookup inside?

I'm curious as to the stereo and stuff.. what could I do to make it ipod accessible?

Asked by: Ellie P @ 2009-04-07 15:12:44

If it's got an ipod jack in it (ask the dealer!!!), you will just have to buy a cable for it, but if there isnt a jack (in the glove compartment), then you cannot use an ipod unless you had a totally new stereo system with ipod compatible software put in for $2500-3500 American money.

just buy an MP3 converter
Bring Back MALCOLM

I love VW beetle convertibles! so congrats on your new car!
it probably won't have an ipod hookup, but if it has a tape player, you can buy a converter-that goes in your tape player and your ipod--and then you can listen to your ipod!

good luck :)

The newest ones have in the glove box, but I forget if it was introduced in 2006 or 2005. You can check here http://newbeetle.org , just have to search the free forum for all the info you need.
ladybugewa

the 2006+ models come with the ipod hookup, 2005 and down dont

I have a 2000 VW Passat 1.8T. I think I blew my timing belt on the highway!?

So Im pretty sure it was the timing belt...and I know what happens to a 16V when the timing belt goes! UGH! However, i've never had to get one fixed...whats the normal cost to have the heads sent out and the belt replaced?

Get rid of it and buy American. Support your own country.

I have 2000 Audi A4 1.8T (same engine). The cost of repair (bent valves) can be somewhere between $4k to $8k. I know. The whole car might be cheaper.

I had the timing belt changed at 65K miles just to be sure.

Sorry for the bad news.

Good luck.......

Depends if you damaged the pistons as well. :S

It'll probably run you between 2500 and 3500. There is alot of labour involved and a new head will run you a substantial cost once you get the valves replaced. (Sometimes it's cheaper but i'm guessing a VW will be more expensive. Those Germans and their fancy engineering. lol)
G6er

Timing belt..30- $60 labor..$100-150
if you handy and have your own socket set and tools..which is a one time purchase of $200 and u will reuse them all the time to repair your car. buy a Haynes manual at your local parts store..
SAVE yourself BIG $$ maybe u have a family member that has a garage u can use?
Jacob

Your actual mph doesn't determine how much damage might have resulted; your actual RPM does. If you were accelerating from a lower gear and the revs where up (say 4000 rpm), you would have significant damage because of the speed that the pistons and camshafts were turning at.

Having said that, its almost certain that you have at the very least, damaged the valves (bent valves) and fairly likely that you have damaged the pistons. In an extreme case, a piston can crack and cylinder wall damage can result. I've seen engines that have been destroyed internally because the belt broke at high rpm's.

Costs to repair will vary a lot because labour and parts charges differ from one area to another; where I'm at, Caifornia is among the highest charges for labour. Labour in this area depends upon make, but even independent shops charge $90 per hour and dealerships upwards to $200 an hour. (Yeah, German and Italian imports are the most expensive--Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, and that sports Italian)

You can expect that a cylinder head repair will cost at least $350 on the very low side and probably much more than that. VW does sell a head assembly on an exchange programme and sometimes that is less expensive than repairing a damaged head. A new head is often sold bare (no valves, cam, buckets, shims etc..) and can be extremely expensive when fully equipped.

You can purchase a short block assembly with pistons and crankshaft for your vehicle for anywhere from $1000 up . A short block is the lower half of the motor that has pistons, rings, connecting rods, the block, crankshaft, rod and main bearings and sometimes the oil pump and pan and is fully assembled. This price is for an aftermarket motor, as a factory one will be at least $1500 or more.

It maybe economically feasible to purchase a complete motor assembly (exchange) from the aftermarket companies. I've seen complete exchange motors from $2000 up, with up to a 3 year warranty included. This is less than a VW factory exchange, sometimes a lot less..

Finally, a used motor is the least expensive way to replace a heavily damaged motor. You can get parts off of Ebay (though you take the risk of not knowing how good the motor actually is) or from a local classified ad (think craigslist.org) or a local breaker (salvage yard) and get a motor on the cheap. Currently someone has a VW Passat 1.8 with a starting bid of $150! on Ebay.

Used, rebuilt, new, if the motor requires replacement, you should expect to pay at 15 hours of labour to replace a exchange or used motor to be put in your vehicle. More if the motor is an exchange assembly (have to take parts off your old motor to put on the new one).
Finally, don't cheap out on the replacement motor, new, used or otherwise.. replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, all the cooling hoses, belts, plugs, etc. It won't cost much in labour (if any) and the time to do it is when the motor is out of the car or the head is off... Nothing worse than having a motor overheat beacuse someone reused a ten year old heater hose trying to save $19. for the part!!!

If your love your car, then a custom rebuild is the way to go. However, expect to pay heavily for the priviledge. At least 25 hours of labour, plus machine work, + parts can get you a world class performance motor, if that's what you want. I've seen people spend large amounts of money to get a performance motor put in their VW.

Anyway, I've gone on too long as it is. Hope this helps, a car nut

what is the cause of the steering wheel of the car wiggling?

the car alignment is bad
Andrew

the alignment is bad...take care of it fast before it get worse
kinny

The wheels could be wrongly alligned, the tracking could be out, or the tires not correctly or straightly mounted on the wheels.
Buxtonski

check out your suspension or your motor mounts might be worn out
STEVEN09

i'd agree with them - probably the alignment. or if its just the actual wheel that wiggles, check the bolt that holds the wheel on, maybe it got loose. and that would be really bad to have it fall off lol

how much does putting a sun roof on a VW Jetta cost?

Asked by: melissa @ 2009-04-07 17:13:33

If you do it yourself, with a can opener, free!
LK

If it didn't come with one from the factory then it is not worth doing after the fact. Too expensive and too many problems to deal with later on.
kenhebe20

Probably over $2500. As joker says use a can opener. But really the roof has to be cut, the inside upholstery on the roof fixed, a window kit installed and wired, the roof repainted. It's too big a job and I wouldn't do it. Get a sunroof car on some kind of trade if you really got to have it. Moon roofs are the same price.
Madmunk

you can always buy a used sun roof from a swap meet. most of the vw car shows allow people to sell used parts and whatnot as well. if you can do the work yourself it will be pretty inexpensive. ($1000 max)

Why would I want a Volkswagen golf diesel opposed to a non-diesel?

I'm looking at purchasing my first car and I am really interested in MK1 or MK2 golfs.

I want to buy somewhat of a project car (something that still runs though) and fix it up.
I have found a 1979 Diesel Rabbit on craigslist that looks like its in okay condition but I do not know much about engines but I'm a quick learner.

Would a diesel be easy to tinker with than a gasoline engine or does it not matter?

I've been looking into tdi as well, trying to compare tdi vs reg turbo. My husband is a big factor since he works on all of our vehicles. He has told me that diesel engines are actually easier to understand because they have less parts than a gas engine. I've looked at some tdi forums and I've found this one to be helpful: http://www.tdiclub.com/

I think it would be so awesome to get 50 mpg, and I love the way diesel engines sound. And ultimately I hate filling my gas tank up every week.

But, from what I've read it costs a lot to do things to the tdi performance wise compared to a reg turbo engine. And one of the biggest factors in my new car will be performace. I have a kia now and hate, hate, omg hate it. I've noticed that the tdi engine has the same hp as my kia rio :/.... I know the torque is more but I'm not sure what difference that will make. I haven't test drove one yet.

I hope i helped you a little, I know I'm just a girl and don't know much. But my husband is way into engines any questions you have I would be more than happy to ask him :)

Good luck

**Thanks john, I'm getting more convinced by the minute.
indee.

yep diesel is definitely easier to mess with. the parts are built to be stronger and handle more stress so if you are upgrading forced induction then you wont have to worry about the bottom end like a gasser

however...........those are pretty old and i doubt they make any performance parts for either gas or diesel for that model

ps-to this indee girl........... torque is EVERYTHING
John K

Keep in mind diesel can be a bit harder to find at gas stations, esspecially small local stations.

I was going to buy a TDI but ended up with a Passat Turbo, I love it!!

As with all 30 yr. old cars replacement parts can be a challenge. A friend bought a '79 VW Diesel Rabbit new and drove it for 10 trouble-free yrs. until he 'totaled' it in a crash. He said it averaged 46 MPG. He said it was such a great car that he is going to buy a new VW Diesel soon.
I would suggest getting a car repair book for the Rabbit .
Also, I believe either engine would be similar to 'tinker on'.

Hi,

Adrian Flux can definitely help - as long as the car is registered in the UK, if not you will either need to re-register the car here, or find an Irish company to offer cover.

Give us a call back (0800 505 3000) and ask for Sammi, who should be able to sort you out. The fact that the car is a non-uk spec should not be an issue.

I would like to suggest you get as much information as you could before taking action, here http://www.CarInsuranceTip.info/free-car-insurance.htm is a good place for that.
