i have one and mine sounds like a transit van lol.
Paula

No.
Surely you can hear where the noise is coming from with the car stationary?

Has nobody else listened to a modern diesel car or what?!?
J G

All Diesels sound like clattery old vans from the outside. The number of times I've been sitting at lights and heard a terrible racket from the car next to me, only to look round and see it's a supposedly 'prestige' German Diesel doing a good impression of a tractor!
EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

No, but when the engine is cold they do sound a little loud only from the outside of the car, this should not last longer than 5 minutes. What yeas is it?
mark m

Well it has the same engine as a VW van, so yes..
r doug w

Mine did this a few months ago.

Put your hand over the end of the exhaust and you'll probably notice a lack of pressure. Then stick your head behind the front wheel and look up at the exhaust. You'll see it's either snapped or blowing, just behind the CAT. Expensive to repair, but a good garage should weld it up for you for about 30 quid (like mine is). The CAT's are over £200 to repalace.
Thunderstruck

Your so funny ( again) ....
L G

No the tdi engines should not sound like a van when driving, Could be a faulty or sticking Egr valve that causes loud Diesel knock due to it being stuck closed.
Check the Vac hoses to and from the egr as the one that runs down the turbo pipe usually splits or comes apart at the push joint.
Do you have any power or performance loss?
If it sound like a tractor loud the exhaust front section or middle box has a hole in it and is blowing.

The new 2.0l Common rail Diesels are Noisier, early 1.9 diesels are a bit clanky at tick over but quieter when moving.
Later 1.9 tdi Pd engines are reasonably quiet at tick over and very quiet when moving.
turboextreme

I know someone who had a golf tdi. You could hardly hear it coming or when it drove past. She changed it for a new golf gt tdi and you can certainly hear it passing. Seems like a much noisier car for some reason.
michael7740

No, must be something wrong with it if it is very loud.

French diesels are very loud, but the German ones are fine.

My A4 3.0 TDI is just as quiet as the 3.2 petrol, and with my new exhaust system it doesn't sound like a tractor at all. Many people have been surprised when I told them it was a diesel!

Volkswagen Polo - any good?

Any good

Yeah they're great. Had one that lasted over 10 years, with no problems. Also cheap and easy to run and maintain.
Nikiiiiiiiiiiiii

I lloved mine no triouble at all good car x
Mem M

Yes can be, but a Ford Fiesta is a lot better, & in the end cheaper too
JAMES -

Yeah, I've had one for nearly 2 years now and am happy with it.

They are a bit more expensive than many other similar small cars, but they have better build quality than most and keep their value. Fuel economy is fine, insurance is cheap and even parts and servicing isn't too expensive.

I've had a couple of minor problems with mine - it needed new brake discs and pads after just a year and a half and less than 10,000 miles (and it wasn't covered by warranty) and the radio sometimes randomly jumps to another station.

I mainly drive in town, and the Polo is pefect for this, but it is also happy on long motorway journeys. Despite just being 1.2 (70hp), it has perfectly adequate performance.
L205

Yeah, Cheap enough, Reliable, Good Econony wise. Perfect First Car aswell ! Thanks
Luke BT 3059

yes ok car but ancient engine's go for something like a yaris or micra
caegale@btinternet.com

They're not bad, but it's a very old model now, and many other cars are better equipped, faster, more economical etc.
Don't believe all you hear about VW reliability either, the Polo doesn't do that well in owner surveys.
I'd have a Yaris or a Honda Jazz instead.
EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

Had about 5 Polo's and have diesel estate now. Group 8 insurance, 50 mpg round town. No problems and does not rust away to a pile of dust like a Fiesta or Jap car.

Most likely a knackered exhaust, nothing to do with the engine.
J G

If it's got louder since the engine was changed then it's probably an exhaust issue. Either it's blowing from the manifold or it's touching the floor of the car after being moved when the engine was out. Or it may just coincidentally have a big hole in it!
EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

maybe because the exaust is shoter then it is ment to b
Krenar S

it's a diesel.
onyx

Your so funny, now go back to sleep.
L G

My money would be on a problem with the exhaust system.
1992LP

As you have put a different engine in my first thought would be that you did not replace the exhaust manifold gasket and exhaust pipe to manifold gasket with new ones when you did the swap.

heard better stuff about v w. quick note: v ws are notoriously harder and more expensive to work on, probably bc of the limited availabilty of parts stocked here in the states. but also, chrystler and dodge are easy to steal. i should know, my dodge spirit got stolen, hotwired and all,and it sucked. but ive heard the beetle is one of the safest cars in the road. check their reviews.
Nick

No idea what a Crusine is, but Chrysler's cars haven't really stood the test of time.
Jason

VW in general is better engineered, and hold it's value better!
LK

It needs a new engine(or can you rebuild it?) Check the auto wreckers for engines and see what kind of deal is out there. Also VW places that are not the dealer. eg guys that drive bugs and the like - they tend to know of somebody who has a friend who has one kicking around type of thing.
Best answer usually the simplest

KBB value on a 2000 beetle in fair condition is 3700.
a good used engine is between 800 and 1000.
r&r has got to be worth 500
are you going to have to do cv joints?, timing belt, water pump while you are there as well as the clutch?
You are at between 2500and 3000 for a car and you don't know about the brakes or the transmission, tires struts and exhaust.
pass, unless you are qualified to do all the work yourself, and in that case you surely would pass.
Lawrence S

It's a tie. They both suck.

Only VW would rebadge a Chrysler Town and Country and call it a Routan.

1996 VW Golf needs a makeover!!!!!??????Suggestions?

I bought a little black golf and its really sporty looking,,,,,my bf is kinda jealous even though he has a nice as mitsubishi. I want to give it a makeover----put on some gunmetal glossy 17" rims on it ( I already have them from a previous BMW) and maybe a loud muffler???? i dont know. He says not too because Im a girl!!!!

Should I? Will it look bad? It currently has decent paint and stock wheels without the covers....so its black on black...everything!!! The interior too.

Please let me know of any websites that can help me see what different rims will look like on a car.

Also, is the muffler what gives a car its noise?? Or is it something else??? Please tell me all that may be relevant. How much are these parts?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The muffler is what quiets the car down so if you put a free-er flowing muffler on it, it will be louder. Usually ricers do this stuff though. Its a personal thing though, if you like it.

As for the wheels, if you have the wheels already just jack the car put and put them on one side and see what it looks like. Make sure they are the right lug pattern, offset and width that you need.

Its all really personal preference, but I think the gun metal wheels would look good on it. Muffler, not so much.

Black-out the the back windows and maybe a spoiler

ww.Cardomain.com. There you can search for the profiles of others with your car, and it can be narrowed by year, etc., and you do not have to join.
UCFViczerez

First the BMW wheels will not fit your car without adapters. VWs use a 5x100 lug pattern and BMWs use 5x120. You can go to tirerack.com and view different wheels on your car. Please do not do a "loud muffler". You can get a full exhaust from techtonics tuning and it will sound better than just a muffler and it will give you some extra power. They cost about $385.

As for the muffler question, a muffler "muffles" the sound. So it is designed to make an exhaust quieter. The big coffee can style mufflers don't muffle the sound as much and therefore it makes it louder. The problem is they don't do anything for the quality of sound. There isn't any tone. It just sounds like a big annoying fart coming out the back of the car. A full exhaust with a proper muffler will sound considerably better. Think about going into a concert hall and listening to music. It will sound clear and nice. Then think about listening to the same music in a gymnasium. It will sound like trash.

Best things to do to that car are simple. Tint the windows, buy good quality wheels, and maybe lower it just a bit.

I think you should get an custom exhaust. It will make your Golf sound nice and give better gas mileage!
Sorry I can't be help with the rims. I tend to like the stock rims myself.
Good luck!

1998 vw golf wont start?

My 1998 vw golf won't start. The car has power, the lights will still come on, the radio, the beeping seatbelt sound... but the car will not even attempt to turn over. It is acting as if I was not pushing the clutch to the floor, even though I am.

spark plugs. oil, starter etc.... could be a number of things.

call your mechanic and explain the problem, shouldn't be too big a problem, could be something very simple!
rom123456789abc

oh maybe you need a new clutch
just did that on my jetta.
id drag it to the shop though.
its a pain in the @ss if thats what it is.
nnik

It could still be a run down battery. If you try and start it with the lights on do the lights fade right out. If so then it is a flat/duff battery.

Need to supply a bit more info to try and analyse problem correctly
Replica

Blame the battery first. Blame the battery second. Just blame the battery. Call the tow truck and the driver will get you on your way.

Does that idiot "Best answer usually the simplest" enjoy posting such rubbish. Wherever I see that he has answered a question, his answer is generally a load of tripe and not worth anything. PLEASE "Best answer usually the simplest", if your answer does not add value to the question rather not submit anything. I would go with Replicas' answer as the best advice.

He'll know, when he sees you melt while he's talking about completely innocent topics he should realize that its his twang doing it. That is, if he's of at least moderate intelligence, sometimes you can't be too sure about those southerners and hillbillies.

Hm, I think you have to give him a Volkswagen in order to tell him this. Good luck!
rosie babayyy

Well in all the time I have been working with VW's never ever came across one called a 'twang'.

Please let me know more about it, was it a special release down deep south only. Pictures please, don't keep us in suspense.

Now about the additional details - I just don't understand the bit about the 'heart'. I know all about the flowers and VW, but never about the heart and VW (except that classic VW owners all have given their hearts to their lovely little cars.

Well Ma'am, I rekkon you already know how to make this Cowboy's twang excited......
