i this really true.........?

is it true vw beetles use more fuel than other cars?
i love them cars.

Asked by: meggi @ 2009-04-17 17:23:29

[Best Answer]the old classic vw's from the 70's get about 30 mpg. From before 1966 they get about 35 (smaller engines). Now there are cars that get better mileage so if you compare the bug to, say, a prius, the answer is yes.

But if you compare it to the majority of the detroit iron, any SUV, and a lot of the rice rockets.. the answer is no.

Its alllllllll relative.

what? no. a beetle gets rather good fuel mileage.
Eric

And why would it be true?

All you'd have to do is look up the fuel economy of a VW Beetle, and you'd see it wasn't the case.

Define "other cars"
rottendog93

Definitely not, beetles are good car that used average mileage, great for the side.

If you are talking about the air-cooled VW Beetle, the owner's manual claims 32 MPG. With a well tuned engine, this is actually a low estimate.

This is probably more than some cars and less than others. What cars are you comparing it to? If you compare it to the GM Chevette of the 70's, then it was slightly heavier on fuel.

00' Jetta losing coolant and white smoke from exhaust?

I have a manual 2000 VW Jetta GLS VR6 with around 155,000 miles on it. Currently, the EPC, Check Engine, and Anti-Slip Regulation lights are on. The valve cover gasket was replaced in Sep. of 2008 and the O2 sensors have also been replaced. I lose horsepower from 3rd to 5th gear when the EPC light comes on and white smoke comes out of the exhaust when I accelerate. Also, I lose a lot of coolant overnight while my car is just sitting there. It leaks out onto the ground beneath my car and I have to refill the coolant every morning. What could be the cause of all this? Please help. Thanks in advance!
also the catalytic converter has been replaced.
do you think the smoke could be caused by the type of gas put in the car? I started using the lowest grade when normally I used the middle grade.

head gasket

You have a head problem your heads are probably in need a new head gasket to keep it from losing power, burning oil and leaking coolant. You should have this check and fixed soon, or else it could become a bigger problem that would require you to replace the whole engine.
James B

It is probably head gasket issues...But at that mileage i would replace the engine....If you repair the heads and do a valve job normally that increases compression....and with that mileage the lower part of the engine will not last very long at all...You will be wasting your money to do the heads..
RonnieA

You could have a head gasket problem, a warp cylinder head, a cracked head, or even a cracked block. The loss of power could be from the coolant covering the brand new O2 sensor you just put in. have it checked soon or you could do more damage to your vehicle.
Rudedude

Your engine might of over heated. The best way to deal with this is to change your engine. Try to find one with low mileage. Check www.car-part.com. Look somewhere near your area.

You have talked to locksmiths? They are the ones who hold the blanks.
Best answer usually the simplest

As already said, most locksmiths will stock them. You need either a V27 or a VW71 blank.

Go to the following website http://www.thesamba.com/vw/ and do a search for one. My sister has a 77 Super beetle convertable that she paid around 10 grand for a few years ago. I think it realy boils down to what it worth to the buyer. I.E. trying to re-live their youth, showing off at car shows or just wanting a toy to play with. I have seen what appeared to be simular VWs differ by 15,000.00 in price range. Ask your self whats it worth to you.
ronald

it all depends on the model, engine, and mileage. is it new or used? we need more info but go to http://www.kbb.com/ and put in all of the information about your bug and it will tell you the suggested retail value, private party value, and trade-in value. also, it will categorize the prices in excellent, good, or poor condition so you'll know where about to price your car given the condition of it.
Haley

It starts at $25,990

I have a 1978 VW campmobile. The repair manuals tell me I have to drop the engine in order to remove the fuel?

tank. does anyone have a better method.
hey neutral, wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to drop the engine? Why replace the fuel tank, there is nothing wrong with it. It needs to be cleaned.

Asked by: Satch @ 2009-04-17 23:06:37

Answers ::
Yes.

I think you should have the tank cut out. You can get a welder to cut out the tank piece by peice, then when you want to replace the tank get one of the new polymer replacement tanks that can be installed in pieces at www.polymertanksolutions.com. I use them in all my cars. They are great.

Cheers.

Go ask this question here:

http://itinerant-air-cooled.com/index.php

You will hear from people that have done it without removing the engine and you will hear from people that do remove the engine. Me, I ain't skeered of removing the engine, Some people will do anything to avoid removing the engine. I think it's easier to pull the engine than to go through the contortions needed to do it with the engine in. I ain't young and flexible anymore. ;)
bill f

Okay, "Set down" the engine and then you can get to the fuel tank. for it is placed above the engine. Inside the car everything is fully welded shut on all the seams.
It takes an hour or 2 to do this job of dropping the engine by yourself. Really depends on how much equipment you have (rolling floor jacks and smooth concrete floor)and how well you are set up and how observant you are and how well you read the instructions in the manual.
It can be done in the dirt(but have a case of cold ones ready at the end of the job)
The engine removal will probably go easier for you than the tank removal.
First disconnect the battery(always do that when doing major work on any car.)

Engine is fastened to transmission 4 bolts.
Sheet metal around spark plugs and over muffler in engine compartment is removed so you can see the ground (with a flat head screwdriver and maybe 10mm socket or OE wrench).
Heater hoses (left side & right side) are unclamped or removed(up to you)
Disconnect the gas line from fuel pump and put in a golf tee to plug the line
2 wire cables to the heater boxes(10mm wrench)
Accelerator cable disconnected in the engine compartment so it goes out thru the firewall.
As the engine is sitting on the floor jack pull it back horizontally as far as possible and lower it slowly and possible tilt the rear of the engine downward by pushing on it to be sure you clear the input shaft from the transmission .
Disconnect any electrical wiring on the engine that goes from the regulator.
Once it is free you can pull the engine out, change the spark plugs and put the engine in again. It is not that hard. AND not in that order. >as this is from memory of 15 years ago<
Follow the manual. And if you can't understand that manual, get another manual written by a different publisher(from the public llibrary) and have2 or 3 of them at hand(the one with many pictures is the most valuable.
Timing is not affected, carburation is not affected.

then once the engine is out what is above is the gas tank. I hope you have a good reason to go there...and had that reason confirmed by others.
Best answer usually the simplest

Removing the engine is not that much trouble. At the VW shop back in the 60's we had to have the engine out within 15 minutes. Then you can get to the tank. DO NOT do what one person said and flame cut the tank. Gas tanks tend to explode when torched.

jetta maintenance question?

I'm looking to buy a car and was wondering what the upkeep on a jetta is like compared to toyota or nissan.

Asked by: drdocaj @ 2009-04-17 15:08:59

Answers ::
Maintenance is a little higher, mostly due to there being less of them on the road and parts are more expensive.
They are good engines. Main concern is oil change and regular timing belt change.
I would ask around and locate a reliable VW mechanic that other owners trust.
Have him look over the car you are interested in before buying.
south

Volkswagens are great cars! However parts are a little more costly. And everyday repair shops may be limited to the service they are willing to do to them. I work in an independent repair shop. Specializing in Volkswagen/Audi. The are greatly engineered, reliable cars! Just cost a little more to maintain.
tom

dont buy and VW they got way too many problems and recalls. u will have to go to the dealer once a month for the check up. i know someone who works for VW.
